View Full Version : So it's Official - No Remake?
Stating from Core Design (http://www.core-design.com), the Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition was cancelled? Could Crystal Dynamics still be working on a remake?
If not, that's a shame, so much work was put into it, and many people were looking forward to it. Why couldn't of Eidos still let it be released? Just because Crystal Dynamics were making the games for now on doesn't mean Core couldn't make remakes does it? Why have Core Design start all that work on a remake when they were just gonna cancel it?

I really hope it isn't officially cancelled.
If it is, than I'll never buy another TR game again!!!!

Matt you don't seem to understand something... Core Design exists only in name now, there is no Core Design company. All the employees are working for Rebellion now.
after Legend, i would be a little hesitant in buying another Tomb Raider game. it wasn't fun and i didn't feel like i was in the game. i'd rather buy games from companies that actually care what its public wants.

I still think Crystal Dynamics could be working on it. All i can suggest you people do it vote in the voting poll that you would like a remake, and keep posting there to keep it active.

I fully understand that, but that doesn't mean Eidos can't publish their games anymore? They're still "trading" I thought? Or did I really miss something? :(

In all reality, this isn't suprising. I mean, did anyone really think that a company that exists in name only is going to come out of the blue and release a remake of a game they no longer have any ownership of? I wish the remake was going to happen, but like they say, tough cookies.

i knew it then but its just the fact that we got shafted as well. i don't think CD is remaking the game. they don't know what tomb raider fully is.

Yes that is the best thing to do... show Eidos that we still want the remake and are willing to buy it. Maybe they can package it with another game and not sell it separately. That would be a good option.

Nay nay. One of the core guys actually explained: Core is still in existence. There are a lot of the old TR staff still on the team. They are owned by Rebellion but that's all that's changed.
80% fooking percent of a game and SCI go and scrap it, well you know what, fook SCI and thier stupid games. Legend was shallower than the water in a puddle.

Id rather just see CD put all their effort into TR8.....

All that needs to happen is to take TR1 and bump up the graphics to modern standards. Even the old control scheme could be kept and no-one would care I'm sure. The Resident Evil Remake was awesome and no-one complained about the controls not being updated (and they were clunkier than TR ever was). ANY good developer could do this project... everything is laid out for them in the original game...

I'll agree with that! I wanted to see what was left of core finish the remake. If CD is gonna do the TR games, just stick to new games. I don't wanna see battle lines over core's TR1 vs. CD's TR1 either... :(
It's been 10 wonderful years, Tomb Raider has sold millions. I really think the fans should get a remake. :(
Does Eidos/SCi care about their fans?

Me too.
We've seen what happens when these companies are forced to do too much at once.
If that game was 80% finished then it's practically a bloody crime to just say 'oh well forget about it'.
I am SO glad the footage was leaked, because this probably would have just been brushed under the carpet.
The game looked AMAZING. I have never been this excited about Tomb Raider in at least 6 or 7 years.
Thanks for all your hard work everyone who worked on it - maybe it'll see the light of day sometime in the future.

I hope the re-make does go ahead :p
However I just have this annoying feeling they will add in pole swinging, ledge hopping and reward finding from Legend into the re-make :(
Dave I think you have the right idea, all they have to do is update TR's graphics to modern standards and the re-make would be brilliant!
If they change or add in new gameplay however it could ruin the nostalgic experience and the classic TR feel too :hea:
If the re-make is a big success Eidos could say, 'ah well you can re-make 2, then 3, now 4, maybe chronicles and heck even AoD is worth a shot!'
And what if the re-make wasn't a success? what then?
Tomb Raider would be finnished thats what! :hea: IMO anyway :(
If the remake was really as good as the trailer suggested, then cancelling this project would mean that SCi is voluntarily loosing a lot of money that fans would have spent. Which would mean that they are very stupid. I don't think they are.
The situation with the stolen trailer release is probably the worst that could have happened. The guys at Eidos and SCi are no fools and I'm certain their reasons for cancelling this project were good. But I am convinced that they will not tell them to their fans anytime soon. For all I know, the project might have been massively behind schedule, or could face other severe problems that would make cancelling the better option. Maybe they were way over budget. All I know is that I have no idea here, but screaming abuse at the responsible companies without knowing the background of their decision is a bad idea.

I have to agree on this one, too.
I'm a little leary of letting CD anywhere near the original TR, considering the amount of respect they paid to the TR franchise on the whole when making Legend, and to be honest, do we really need to create an even bigger rift between the TR Dinosaurs and the Legend Best Eva's? If Core ain't doing it, I'd rather it was left alone...
Ahem... Maybe a lil' too rude.
Todays "Core" is not the Core that made TR1. Most of those Core folks that were popping up on the other thread indicated that they were hired within the last year. So it is pretty much a toss up as to who makes the remake. The main thing is that they should listen to the fans and take our concerns into account.

I agree 100%. Also, as another poster briefly mentioned, this game could be a huge gamble, no matter WHO is making it. What if it sucks arse, then Eidos would look at losing a lot of money because then no one would buy a TR game ever again. Several people have stated "(insert absurd reason here) then I will NEVER buy another TR again!" Does Eidos really want to lose so much of a fanbase (and money) to possibly remake something that has already been done? I think we all need to calm down....CORE said they would release "exciting news soon".....let's just wait for that news before going crazy again.

You have to chill... This remake project was only 8 months old--stop saying Crystal stole anything from them. Furthermore this isn't the same Core people who made the original games... they are gone, these are new people under EIDOS employ at Core. Now I agree it looks like they were doing a great job but damn, I can't stand by while people continually act as if the mere name of "Core" is holy, which "Crystal Dynamics" is somehow worthless and evil. Crystal has a long and good history in gaming--a history that suggests that Legends faults probably lie with EIDOS more than with any shortcomings at Crystal.
AE was looking so awesome, I was geeking out about it like anything! I may have even bought a PSP if it was PSP exclusive.
It's true, Core is no more... and no blaming Crystal Dynamics for copying and whatnot.

You could be right! I hope maybe it was cancelled because Legend for PSP comes out here not until next tuesday so it would be only on the market 4 months or less before the remake does and it would be a gruge match between the two! Either that or the PSP is just not what Eidos look to do it for. Maybe it will be PS2 and then its like a test somewhat like Liberty stories was but its for PS2 and then if it does good they will release it for PSP! Eidos probably has a really tight hold on tomb raider when it comes to Core developing a game! But there is still exciting news coming like you said!

Yeah, I know Core doesn't really like speculation, but I re-read the news and it said that it was only the PSP version cancelled it said nothing about the PS2 game running and the cancelled it only said PSP so like you said Fondantcookie it may just be the PSP! Especially since the same news about the PSP being cancelled they said there is really exciting news coming still! If it was about a different game or franchise wouldn't the news of something exciting coming be in a different paragraph from Tomb Raider AE! Something is fishy, but something good seems to be still coming from Core! Plus they don't seem that upset about the PSP version being cancelled!

Do some people on this forum actually want Core Design to develope Tomb Raider again?
Sorry but it ain't gonna happen :ohn: Core are dead and burried, well not really but they are Circle Studios now and make utterly abysmal games like Without Warning 3/10 - any talent these guys once had is long gone!
Eidos made the right move giving Tomb Raider to Crystal Dynamics simply because they are a far superior developer than Core Design!
And judging by Crystals past games I too would say any faults with Legend are down to Eidos! :hea:
And Yeah I know Core made the original Tomb Raider which was brilliant but after Toby Gard left the series began to grow stale and by Tomb Raider 3 anyone could see it, fan or non fan!
Tomb Raider needs a new direction and Crystal are the RIGHT developer to take it there. Anyone with half a brain could see Eidos had milked the games for everything they were worth but now Crystal have the series and they should hopefully tell Eidos when to keep there beaks out of the development process and let Crystal get on with it.
Look at Crystals track record, it's almost flawless in that they actually deliver what they promise. Soul Reaver is one of the best PS1 games of all time and it's sequel is also utterly brilliant - any shortcomings Legend had were because of Eidos NOT Crystal!
Crystal shouldn't make the re-make though, they should leave classic as classic and work on there own TR series.
And as for Core - I hope they never get there grubby hands on Tomb Raider Ever again!
Just my opinion :p

I apologise for insulting crystal dynamics coz its not really their fault. However it is eido$ fault that tr is now ruined. But yes I do believe cd stole cores moves from trae. I think at the very least they took inspiration from it and put it in legend. I blame eido$ coz they never should have dumped core. If they hadn't we'd still be seeing decent tr games such as the remake. CD just dont know how to make a tr and thats not their fault. CORE are the only ones that can make a tr and I hate eido$ for geting rid of them.

Yeah I do agree with you Elysia - Eidos are the bosses and they need a kick up the rear-end if you ask me!
I may be only 19 but I've been with TR since the begining and I know when I've been playing the same game over and over and over for the last 10 years - it's time for a change and Crystal can deliver that change :)
I am not saying Legend was brilliant or amazing because fine I know it's not, Crystal are capable of so much more than that and it's so unfair Eidos stick there beak in at every chance they get! :(
I didn't read anything about Core apart from when the 'AoD debacle' unfolded and they lost TR but I know they are an independent developer now
> Circle Studios
As for AoD I am not against the game at all and if anything it was more Tomb Raidery than Legend to me anyway but it did ruin any chance Core have of ever continuing the series, sadly :(
I think Crystal will do fine with TR, Legend is only a first attempt anyway :)
I may be young and okay so maybe I shouted my mouth off but I think Core don't deserve another shot at TR, they almost ruined Lara's reputation once -I highly doubt Eidos will let them near it again.
Eidos must have a death wish. They already almost lost TR cause of AOD. TR1 is one of the most loved of the series, along with TR2 and TR4. They'd be idiots if they canceled the remakes.

I appreciate what you're saying and I'm sorry if I came on a little strong... I still don't get the "copying" part though. There's no proof either way... Core could have copied CD for all we know... the timeline fits that scenario better. Or they both took a page from POP, which is even more likely. Either way it's a shame this project is canceled. It's a shame Legend wasn't better too. Perhaps someone will see the light and let the remake be finished... and perhaps TR8 will be a lot better than Legend too! ;)

Please understand, if you worked here you would see that very little has changed and it has in no way affected our current projects in the slightest!
Core design was an independant developer, it just happened to be owned by Eidos. We are now part of the Rebellion group, themselves an independant developer. Since Eidos owned Core they owned TR, (so no change there then) us being sold has therefore changed very little.
Grrrrrrrrrr. How about you guys pretend that Eidos never bought Core back in 96 but instead just bought the copyrite on TR. Imagine that if you will. Now imagine that Core has become part of a bigger independant developer and has decided to change its name. Does that make more sense?

** Warning - boring insite into how publishers and developers work **
Note: This is how all developers and publishers work, not just Core and Eidos. I have worked for several developers and dealt with lots of publishers and ran a development studio for a while and in my experience these are the main 4 ways the relationship works.
1) Developers come up with ideas and pitch them to publishers. Publishers either turn them down, pick them up or fund a partial development. This means that almost no projects done in this way are garenteed to be finished. Sometimes the publisher just wants a good design, other times they will pay for a technical demo. Sometimes they will pay for a game through most of its development and then decide not to continue with it for any number of reasons. Believe me, this happens a lot! Remember, it may cost millions to develop a game but it also costs millions to market it and physically produce it. Publishers can sometimes they just cut their losses after doing their sums for projected sales in the current climate.
2) A publisher has an IP (intelectual property) or licence (film, tv, sport etc.) that they want a game from. They either hand down a design from another source or ask the developer to supply a design. These types of games usualy follow type 1 in their development but are usually more sure to go through.
3) A developer has enough money to make a game through to partial or full completion then pitches it to publishers who will then do a deal to publish it.
4) Method 4 is how movies are financed. Both parties are bonded to a contract with a third party financeur to produce a game of an agreed specification. These types are much more likely to go to completion.

Hey there Mellow :wve: Could I please ask how long you've known the TRAE project has been cancelled for / when it was cancelled?
It was cancelled about a month ago as far as i remember.
Only a month ago?!
Maybe Legend selling so well has something to do with the decision.
We have not been told why. They just "passed" on it.

Thank you for that, and for the insight. :)
It's nice to know that Eidos respect you as much as they do us. ;)

*Gasps in horror* What are Eidos thinking, aren't you a tad bit raged that publishers just diregarred your hard work like this? Don't you think they were using you as a plan B in case Legend failed. Those cheeky ****s! It's so unfair on Core and Lara, she won't have a proper birthday... Pass me the custard please.

Mellow Yellow, thank you for your explanations. Maybe we should have an own thread about "The Truth, And Nothing But The Truth About Core Design" :)
I honestly can't understand some people's opinion that the series went downhill after TR 3, or 2, or even 1. I'm a fan who loved every game for its unique features, and I think it went up from 1 to 4. Im just sad about the ending in 4 which I never understood, there are countless serial heroes who live on for ages, doing what they are good at. Still, with the proper controls, as has been pointed out to me (use a PS controller + configure to your liking while playing on PC) a member here has given me great hope to replay AoD and thoroughly enjoy it. At least it's still Lara. And I thank Core again for giving us the level editor and therefore hundreds and hundreds of real Tomb Raider levels to play. Beat that, Eidos :mis:
Well hopefully eido$ will see how much attention this has got and will see sense that the remake should be continued. If not by core at the very least let cd have a crack at it. I'd prefer it if core were doing it but if eido$ were to let cd do it I'd be fine with it. At least if cd made a remake they'd actually have to take inspiration from tomb raider so it should actually turn out like a tomb raider game.

I can tell you one thing, if Crystal Dynamics makes it, I won't buy it. Even if they make a PS2. It is CORE's game, CD has absolutly no business touching Tomb Raider 1, even if Toby is on the team.
I'm getting so sick of Eidos just listening to the money, we almost lost Lara in th first place because of them. I'm so sick of people saying Eidos won't do that, or fat chance, Eidos needs to start listening otherwise theyre going to have alot of people not buying their games.
And I'm getting steamed becuase one again, we have no say in the games we want to buy I am sick of it, money, money, money, I'm sick of it, go bankrupt, maybe then you'll listen to what we have to say.

I'd rather the Remake never gets released that Crystal D get their hands on it. What I've seen was fantastic, and it was all Core's work. Plus a switchable option for spinning targets. As usual, intelligent and considerate.
Just to reiterate, MellowYellow said that publishers and develZZZzzzzz.....

I see what your saying and I agree. However I would still like to see a remake no matter who makes it. Yes CORE would make it 100x better than cd but I would still buy it. Plus if cd make it we'd actually know if cd can make a proper tr. It could be a trial for them. If they fail never let them make a future tr. If they succeed let them make more games. I'd like it if they could just take cores work and just finish what they'd started. That way we'd still be seeing the game that would have been made. I dont really see any of this happening tho. Theres always hope.
SCREW CD AND STUPeidos!!! I'm so mad at them both! The rip off artists! :hea: I hate theives, liars and cheats, they lived up to all those qualities kicking core out and taking control of the remake. See TLR's thread, they will continue it at CD!!! :( Talk about screwing it up!!!! It should get renamed

Legend was their trial. If they can't make a proper game, they have no buisiness even touching the original, we are not going to have the wrong people make the series look bad with a re-make that resembles Legend, they do that, kiss Lara good-bye.
Theres always hope
With Eidos pulling the strings, there are none. They don't even give their companies enough time to complete a game and theyre always rushing so they can get money, money, money.
Chill....
I don't know anyone at Crystal. (least not that I know of) but I'm sure they are perfectly capable of doing Lara justice. I still feel upset that our game will go unfinished. But why has everybody turned on Crystal?
What's with the 'I'll never by a TR game again'?
Listen to yourselves. You are true TR fans. You love TR. And when a new game is released, you'll be excited about it and you'll buy it, and probably enjoy it.
Lara's with Crystal now. If there's things you want different, tell them. Be nice to them and I'm sure they'll be nice to you.
Life's to short to bear grudges like this.

Yes I know legend was their trial. And they did fail it. At least in my eyes they did. Still I think if eido$ definitely are so stupid they will never let core make another tr again then the best for a good tr we can hope for is another developer other than core making a remake. I just wish eido$ didn't just think about the money and actually cared about what the fans want. If they did they'd see sense and let core continue with the remake. I've lost my faith in eido$.
So Eidos' business plan is, according to the logic presented in this thread (by non-core-employees), the following:
1. Do something cool.
2. Abandon it at the last minute or change it for something horrible, just to annoy potential customers.
3. Profit!!!!!!!
While I cannot rule out for sure that this is, indeed, their business plan, I doubt it. I simply cannot believe that managers leading a company that makes this much money is really that stupid.
I also wonder why so many people are convinced that <whatever> will kill Tomb Raider for certain. If anything, I would have assumed that this <whatever> was Angel of Darkness (I like it, but it took me a very long time to appreciate it and from what I heard it was not at all well recieved), but looking at Legend sales, it certainly wasn't.
I'm not trying to defend anyone from criticism they deserve, but a lot of what I read around here seems to be both unfair and more based on truthiness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truthiness) than facts.

That's wise advice, yet it will be quite a while before, (and if at all) fans will be able to follow it. The last week has been quite upsetting, and the worst is that still there is no human face from Eidos coming forward and communicating. That feeling of being ignored whilest being the EOU customer who feeds them the cash is quite something to deal with.
Chill....

They did OK with Legend, it's fun and frothy and highly playable.
But it's not TR really. And seeing TR1 remade I think has rubbed the salt into that wound. A pink winter outfit does not compensate for loss of levels like Palace Midas, Wreck of the Maria Doria, Aldwych and the Lost Library (to mention just the very tip at the top of a very large iceberg).
Or maybe you agree with the direction they've taken the gameplay? Some people do.

I want a Tomb Raider game, a real one, not a dress up party. And it seems that Core is the only one who actually knows how to please the fans.

Well with fans like you threatening to never buy another tr again eido$ have to listen to you. I personally will always buy a tr game no matter what coz I'll always have faith in the series. If eido$ keep losing fans like you clearly because of eido$ stupidity then they'll be forced to actually think about what the fans want hopefully.

Which is exactly right becuase it even says it in theyre new name that everyone has for them: Eido$. I have been a fan since day one, literally. I have tollerated their tyrant behaviors for a long time and put up with it and if they screw up one more time, me and other day one fans are gone.

Exactly, theyre the ones who started it and I'll be damned if theyre not the ones to finish it. Tomb Raider was made by their hands so if it dies, i'd rather see it by them.
Reading now that CD are taking up the project, I'm severly nervous.
1. Personally I'd never let them touch TR1-6
2. If they "crystalise" anything I'll be immensely angry
However if they Stick to the material they already have, (as in what we see in the trailer) and simply continue doing Exactly what Core were doing, then I'll be perfectly excited.

Which they won't. Theyre going to wind up molding it the way they want it and that famous quote that Toby has now: "She's my character and I'll do what I want with her", isn't helping at all.
However if they Stick to the material they already have, and simply continue doing Exactly what Core were doing, then I'll be perfectly excited.
Then certain people would say they stole Core's work and claming it as there own.
Grrrrrrrrrr, ONE LAST TIME for those at the back :)
"All the employees are working for Rebellion now" True, but at the same office, on the same projects, with the same staff etc etc etc...... Your statement makes it out as if Core is dead and we have all gone down to Oxford. Not true!!!! Essentially nothing has changed except the legal owners of the company and the fact that we will eventually have to change our email address and the sign above the door!
Sorry to rant but it makes me maaaaad
Sorry but I was not the one who decided to sell Core... instead of being mad at me you should be mad at SCi.... but I understand why you are mad. ;) The only problem I have is that everytime you refer to yourself as Core people get confused and think Core Design is still a development company and then fights break out on the forum saying "Core Design should remake all the games".. etc. I don't know how many threads I have seen about this and it just gets fustrating because Crystal Dynamics is gettin slammed a lot. This will only make matters worse.
I in no way wanted any of this to happen and I know this happened recently but just look at all of the arguments that have sprung up on this forum because people don't understand that Core has been sold to Rebellion...
Maybe we can stand over CD with SHOTGUNS to make sure they don't mess it up! :cln:
Are we sure Crystal Dynamics is doing the game?
I believe so, see tlr's thread, it mentions this...

With Core doing the remake, it wouldn't be that much a problem, but id Crystal Dynamics made it, they'd probably add Unlockable Outfits, Zip and Allister, and Cut the levels in half...
i'm sorry but why does everybody hate toby g.
Toby left after TR1 because he didn't think it would do well or whatever, turns out he misses out because it did sell, very well. TR2-TR6 were real TR games, not some fashion show. Legend is a great game, but it isn't Tomb Raider, it's Lara Croft: The Fashion Raider. I liked Legend, but I got more enjoyment out of AOD. Toby doesn't realize that there's TR2-TR6, he wanted to make a fresh start from HIS OWN IDEAS and not use CORE'S.

He thought that Core was goig beyond his ideas and his expectations and he left. He probably more than likely regrets it but I seriously don't want him touching a re-make. He'll turn it into another Legend and if that happens, hello Prince Of Persia, nice to see you.
I'm completely speechless after reading everything in this thread...Gosh I dunno where to start but...I'm still dearly hoping for the re-make...I mean 80% is just DARN CLOSE...DARNN CLOSE...

Geeeesss, I'm a new guy and my head may explode with all the bull**** that people come out with. I need to lay down for a while :hea:
I didn't mean your Core - I meant the Core Design that Adrian Smith and Jeremy Heath Smith once had. I mean they have moved on to Circle Studio and don't work with Core now, so when I said Core are dead and burried I meant the Core Design they had and the Core that once developed TR games.
Sorry if I was unclear but I honestly was talking about Core Design the TR developer not your Core.
But seriously I don't think Eidos will give TR to anyone else, Crystal have the series now so people should stop moaning about it and get over it! :hea:
