View Full Version : Describe the Perfect TR 8 Level
If you were to decide on an entire level of Tombraider 8, what would it be.
While everyone is out pointing the finger at what sucks, I'm curious as to what everyone here can come up with. So be as creative and clear about how you would make your own level. The controls, the gameplay, the graphics, the location, the puzzles. If you made it, what would it be like.

AWESOME idea for a thread !!!
I look forward to reading peoples suggestions...
To be honest, my idea of a perfect level would actually be reminiscent of the TR2 underwater levels....
Maybe an ancient sunken city...circa ancient greece...
Lara learns of a sunken city deep beneath the ocean. So she dives down there in a diving bell. Upon reaching the bottom, she sees a huge gaping cave infront of her....with ancient relics and crumbling pillars lacing the ocean floor. She swims close, prepared with only her pistols, harpoon and oxygen tank....
As she progresses, staring in awe at the aqua tinted ruins and eerie cave entrance....she senses something around her. All of a sudden a giant squid makes itself knowm....Lara panics...she swims torwards the cave, firing back a strem of harpoons.... As she frantically swims forward, she snags her oxygen pipe on a sharp rock...and thus a quick paced swimmming sequence ensues, with lara searching for air pockets in the cave roof above....
She swims further, the squid in hot persuit.... It quickly swims forward, knocking down a pillar supporting the cave roof. A cave in begins.... Lara is trapped...
...dun dun dun...
And now...lara explores a huge lost aqautic civilisation...that is NOT LINEAR....
Her Grapple is used to pull over a statue of tritan, to swing on a huge statue of an octopus with 8 giant arms, and to pull down walls only to have water rush in and a quick escape (ala TR1s Atlantis lava chase) begin.
Puzzles could include finding keys to open the respective doors, pulling down walls to flood rooms to reach high areas, finding different ornate shells of different weights and placing them on their respective pads. She must find the respective parts of Tritans trident, assemble them on a central pedastal....and use it to open a main door.
Behind the main door, you learn the secret of the civilisation. A broken excaliber portal lies present. Maybe this was the cause of the cities demise.....and maybe this is the reason the city now lies several thousand meters underwater....
There would be sunken dungeons, a sunken colloseum, a sunken library, sunken baths....and many a dripping corridor, with only the faint sound of footsteps to add to the atmosphere... ....etc...
...awwww.... I JUST WANT MORE WATER LEVELS !!!!
Hehe...I could go on for ages describing this whole scene....
But no doubt everyone reading is bored...hehe..
:D
I posted in another thread a fewmonths ago about my idea for this......it think it was something about designing "your ideal level".....Im too tired to post it like i did the last time, but to put it in a nutshell, it was in Venice (plenty of water for you Fondantcookie)...You start out in scuba gear in the canals of venice usng some sort of device to look for a hidden wall , and it leads to a giant half flooded Tomb underneath Venice.....blah blah blah......its 1 am and im tired.....

Whatever CD is designing, better be non-linear and dynamic...

Every room branches off into at least 2 or 3 rooms so that you have to explore and it takes a while to create a map in your mind so you can replay it a couple of times before you memorize it.

The best way for me to describ my dream level is that it should not be a level, it's a fricking real world...
Anything without CD is fine by me.

Woah....seems like i'm the only one whos actually been creative here...
One liners like "anything" and "who cares" really add nothing to the constructive discussion that could be had here. Your given the chance to design a PERFECT level....
Such a waste of a brilliant topic idea. Heres hoping the brits are a little more energetic when they get on here in a few hours.... :D (8hr time difference...)
And the day outfits take priority over level design is the day TR as we know it has finally come to an end :(
The perfect level?
Hm, alright..
First remove Zip and Allister. Then Add some more puzzles and key finding, level pulling, that will add some length. Make the puzzles harder. I'd like a level in Eygpt or Atlantis again. I hope TR8 is harder.

my idea of a perfect level is kind of Ghana and Bolivia mushed into one, made 100times better, lara reaches her target point by boating down the river deeep into a amazone like rainforest, loud animal noises bird calls, movements in the rainforest, WEATHER and CLIMATE id like more environment, sudden bursts of rain, wind picking up etc...
anyway, lara beats back the plants and srubs, to make her own path thro the jungle, untill she comes across an old path, she suddenly meets with an endangered species of monkey, which she realises and cannot kill, the enraged animal trespassing on her terratory starts a chase thro the jungle, following the old path, lara shooting objects in the way, desperate for escape, until suddenly a HUGE roar up ahead, the monkey stops dead in its tracks, makes a wimpering sound and runs off, lara looks uneasy towards the rest of the old path, suddenly (NO CUT SCENE) as laras walks along she says, "and whats this" which makes you look around, she spies a small rock on the ground,
cutting into the jungle she follows the rocks untill she meets a dead end, a wall of unseen end meets with her, she studies the wall, takes a picture for analysis when she gets home, and spies a hole in the wall, she has to move a few rock out of her way to get thro and as she does, a cinematic kicks in... Lara elegantly flips out of the hole and is taken aback as she sees a huge temple infront of her, over grown with bushes and trees.....
the rest is upto ur imagination if u enjoys reading this :D

What an awsome topic! :tmb:
My perfect TR level would be like Far Cry on Xbox 360!
A desert island, surrounded by water.
There would be a jungle with paths leading in all directions and different traps and dangers throughout.
There would be sites all around the island like a tribal camp, temple ruins, waterfall spring, mountain top ridge, swamps and dank caves too!
Each area has it's own puzzles and dangers that await Lara.
We are left alone to solve the puzzles and peice together the story by ourselves!
There would be a beach where Lara could swim in the sea and dive down into the many ruins and underwater cave systems populating undersea areas.
There would be secret areas and hidden goodies down there too!
The look of the jungle would be like King Kong on Xbox 360, complete with hanging vines, low lying shrubs and dense lighting coming through the trees.
Seriously by the way Tomb Raider next-gen should look exactly like King Kong on the 360, the jungle is just lush and amazingly beautiful! :D
The look of the beach would be exactly like the one in Far Cry with soft white sand and gentle lapping waves. There would be a weather system so it could be raining one minute and sunshine the next.
I just love this idea of the desert Island game where Lara and the player is alone to solve puzzles and aviod traps by themselves.
Either that or an underwater level near Athens in Greece complete with rocky shoreline, sandy beach, underwater ruins and a city deep under the sea for us to explore!
Cool topic by the way! :)

Lara is stranded on a tropical island. She arrives at a cross road.
To the left is the sun soaked beach with crystal clear water and little coves and caves to exlpore. She can use her jet ski to travel around the island by water.
To the right is the jungle - thick and dense with palm trees, foliage and passages to underground tunnels. There also appears to be a treacherous swamp that needs to be crossed to get to the ancient ruin in the middle.
Directly infront of Lara are the ruins of an ancient civilisation. There are old wooden huts and ancient god like statues. Beyond the huts stands the ruins of a massive tomb. The tomb is covered in ivy and the jungle has more or less consumed it.
Way off in the distance she sees a snow topped mountain with an ancient ruin. The mountain looks almost climable. She may need her quad bike to travel up that mountain. And a parachute to get back down.
But first she must explore the huts infront of her, raid that ancient tomb, explore the tunnels and coves, cross that swamp in the thick jungle and use her jet ski to travel on the oceon to get to the mountain.
But wait, 5 army helicopters arrive on the beach carrying the "NATLA" logo on the side. Out steps a blonde woman and dozens of mercenaries. They are after the same artifact...and they know Lara is here...
You see? This is the kind of freedom I want to see in TR8. So many places to explore and you do it at your own leisure. No Zip, no Alister - just Lara and the wilderness. This game is about survival and Lara must catch her own food like MGS and surivive the jungle.

It's safe to assume that a lot of us love the "free roaming island" idea! It's been passed around the forum for a long time now and everyone has new additions and exciting different views of it. It's what Tomb Raider should have always been evolving towards IMO.

OK Lara goes to Scotland! Again! (yes she was here before!)
Lara enters thick and dense forest, and there are many ways in which to go. At one point you see a shrine and you have to work out how to get to it. Once you get there, there are letters or symbols on this shrine that give you some sort of clue. I am only talking about a statue.
Then as you go through the forest, you come to a castle, and in the castle gardens is a maze which you must make your way through. Once you do you see the castle and a tomb entrance opposite. You have half the code to open this Tomb door. What you must do is enter the castle, (and there is a hidden switch in near by underground area) climb to the top, take in the view, and notice that the maze is the shape of symbols which provides the second half of the code you need. Then you enter the tomb.
Maybe not a perfect level idea, but if she went to Scotland :tea:
going through a dark hall with a soft light at the end. as lara walks down i hear her foot steps on something that sounds like tile. a cool breeze chills her arms as she steps closer to the light which is now becoming a pink hue. lara draw's something from her backpack .... enters Victoria's Secret and asks the saleswoman if she can return the underwear she bought for a size smaller.

Well I have been thinking about the island idea since I saw Kameo on the 360 and how huge the Bad-lands area was, perfect for a desert island in a Tomb Raider game I'd say!
I agree though interstellardave :tmb:
Tomb Raider was always evolving towards this concept and it's time they made it happen!
Btw UNDERTAKER nice touch about Natla coming off the chopper, what a brilliant story that would be! :D
Wow, such a cool topic. Finally something positive!
OK, so here goes - the perfect TR level according to moi:
The perfect setting: archaeological ruins of an ancient civilization – any civilization will do, though some place our dear globetrotter Lara hasn’t been before would be nice. Somewhere in the Middle East perhaps? (Not Egypt though, that’s been done to death).
A good mixture of indoor and outdoor areas. Beautifully done, atmospheric outdoor areas, with lots of water (hmm, perhaps the Middle East isn’t such a good idea after all…)
HUGE, slightly spooky spaces. Complex areas that you can actually explore. Several side trips for pieces of a puzzle, secrets, etc.
Puzzles galore. Different types though – not the put-something-heavy-on-the-pressure-pad-and-the-door-will-open types that abounded in Legend.
A fair bit of shooting, but only so as to clear a path to the main objective, not as the main focus of the level. A mix of human, animal and supernatural enemies.
Minimal use of cut-scenes – preferably only at the beginning and end of the level.
Unlike most of the people who seem to frequent this forum, I did not dislike the head-set and Zip and Alister’s chatter in Legend, so I wouldn’t take that out – but no hints from those two, and definitely no incessant inane remarks. Lara contacts them, that too only when necessary.
A definite feel to the level, with haunting music that enhances this.
i still think that with the way the franchise is going ... a mall would be a great level.
Just thought of a place Lara hasn't been before (I think): Scandinavia! Picture Lara exploring an old Viking settlement ...

Ok, I don't know the locations but it could almost work anywhere! Imagine a large area divided into 2 or 3 other areas or of shoots. Like a last revalation level, but no load times! So its a little like the TR 3 level where you get the embalming fuild for him in the british museum!
You are in a large area you are surrounded by tons of traps but you don't know how they are triggered, so watch out! You got a stream or river sourrounding the area, above you, you can see a little hole filling the river and it looks like the whole celling can open up. You have crocs in cages all around, in the middle is a wall tablet or some sort of oblisek! on it is 3 keys and on the opposite side there are five door openers like TR 1 just the kind that you pull down! and next to the tablet is a leveler like TR last revelation and on the wall way up is a lever! Now there are 5 doors leading to another room! you must pull the levelers in the right way or order to open the doors! above each door is some sort of code to tell you how! If you don't somehow open any door the ceiling opens unleashing a water fall of crocs and water the room is filled up you must pull the lever on the wall to drain the water before you are eaten by the crocs! So say you open a door lets start with door one! Inside is a riddle puzzle you have to put the right amount of water into a pal or jug and then place it on the scale if you are right a wall opens in front of you to reveal one of the keys, if not you are punished by a spikes coming out of the floor.
Then you go into door two, it leads way far back into a large temple inside some large cats that look like statues come out after you you must kill them and continue further into the temple about 10 minutes are so later you find a tomb! inside there are many traps but yet there really is no where to go. So you remove the top to reveal a hole its a fake coffin! You jump down into a cave you continue further and see spider webs huge ones giant spiders begin to crawl all over in front behind above you, you kill them and continue finding all kinds of corps on the ground some preserved some on the walls wraped in webs some skeltons. You finally see a torchs on the wall leading to an underground like mosuliuem. go inside to find a place full of gold, and some lamps not yet lit, so you grab the torch to lit them. AFter that though it seems that the place is moving a bunch of boulders seem to just free fall from the back ceiling. IN the back is reviled the key. But wait there are spiders and words leading all the way up above the entry it gives you five colors and on another wall is a bunch of names you must somehow find the right name by looking a the colors of the letters in the entry way, spelling the correct word will give you the key if not you can still get it but you had to dodge a spiked pit, some swing axes and floors that light fires up!
Door Three, you go inside, its an old prison there are cages to the left and right some odd mystical creatures eat the bones and flesh of the rotting corpes, there are many corridors, like the maze in the last level of India in TR 3 you finally find the back room having only one route as other routes will either waste your time or have traps or the odd creatures attack you! its a room with a bunch of steps leading to the top where the other key is the floor seems very unsteerdy as its made of old wood! You jump on the block and jump up the steps coming out of the wall, but the steps are moving down and now the floor gave out to reveal a firey inferno you must from each step to the other before they either give out or move you to the fire once up top you find the key!
Now you go back to the room you put in the first key holes are revealed and out of them lions and bears emerge like a collesum. you put in the second the crocs are released from their cages. But wait now that both keys are in holes in the two holes in the wall near the door that sets you free two new locks are reveled so from the last lock on the tablet to the Two next to the door only one is the right one! ONe realeases holes all over the walls and ceilings tons of giant snakes come of slithering you must destroy them suffer the consequences. the other wrong hole reveals an ancient dead army that will continue to try to kill you and won't stop till your dead, the last key hole is the right one, the door opens and a clear path is open to the outside world but the room and the way out begins to crumble and acid begins to seep from the walls you must travel the corridor watch out for new revealed passages watch out for some spinning blades and the acid behind, if you survive you are home free!
The other two doors are an under water puzzle with lots of strong currents and spikes. The other is a st. Francis folly like level but once you see the you get all the keys and put them into the giant door and giant statue or mythical creature is reviled and you must defeat it to orbtain the key!
Remember there are five doors and any door has a key so any three doors will work to complete the level! Maybe even have a couple of doors that have puzzles but you obtain no keys maybe die from a trap, or get some weapons or extras!

Nice island idea! :tmb:
as for my level ideas, I managed to find this on my hard drive:
We see Lara getting ready for an adventure: she puts on her boots, adjusts her backpack, etc. The camera zooms out and we see she is in a helicopter. She talks to Zip and Alister and we find out that there have been 2 years since the things that occurred in Legend, Lara never got any information about her mother until today; we find out that an old friend archaeologist has invited her to an archeological site in Botswana because he found something that could possibly connect to Lara's mother's dissapearence. Lara jumps out of the helicopter and meets her friend at the site.
Chapter 1.
Location: Botswana archaelogical site
The first part of this level is a training level in which Lara follows her guide throughout the site learning all the jumps etc. (something like Cambodia in tr4). She has no weapon as there are no enemies here, just the training. They get down into the newly discovered tomb.
Lara's friend takes her to the place. He found Lara's father's old diary saying something about a special stone and monastery in France who were connected to king Arthur. The two parts of that stone connected should open the door to Avalon. The first part of the stone is somewhere in Botswana, in a tomb located near. We then see the mercenaries coming down to the site, killing all the workers, and trying to kill Lara and her friend.
As you have no weapons, you have to knock out the first enemy using your fighting skills. Then you can take his gun and shoot the others. There are many of them, but as this is the first level, they shouldn't be too hard to beat. You have to make sure that they don't kill your friend either. If he's badly hurt, you can give him one of your medipaks. When you killed them all, an FMV begins.
Lara and her friend talk but no one knows who were those men. Lara decides to go to the locations her father wrote in his diary: caves in Botswana and that monastery in France. First she's of to the caves.
Chapter 2.
Location: Botswana cave/tomb
In this level Lara has all of her equipment. Enemies include mercenaries and various animals. You have to find your way through the complicated caves, but later you find out that it's actually a tomb and you find your way through the tomb. At the end of the tomb you fight a boss: tomb guardian. After defeating him, you take the part of the stone. On your way out, you ecounter more mercenaries. After killing all except one baddie, the FMV begins.
Lara talks to the gunman (with her gun to his head) and asks who are they and who are they working for. He tolds her they're working for a man named XX (not very good in picking names, so this guy will be called XX from now, you pick your own name) and that he asked them to find that stone peace. Lara knocks him down and decides to go to that monastery.
Chapter 3.
Location: Monastery in France
Zip and Alister have checked out the XX guy. He is a rich British bussinessman. They've also find out that that stone gives you incredible power, and that's probably why he wants it so much.
Lara is in a ruined monastery in central France. There are some puzzles here and no enemies. At the end of the level Lara gets to the basements of the monastery, where she finds information about the stones and she finds out that this was the place where Arthur and his knights were having their secret meetings.
Alister has find out of a historian whos work is based only on king Arthur's myth. He says that Lara should visit him. He lives in Nice.
Chapter 4.
Location: Nice
Lara is in Nice driving her motorbike. First you have to talk to some people to find out where the historian lives. When she finds that out she drives to his house. She talks to him and he tells her that the stone really gives you the power and it really opens the door to Avalon, which are supposed to be somewhere in Turkey. Lara asks him where is the second part of the stone. He tells her that it was on a boat going from Egypt to Monte Carlo but crashed in the middle of the sea. It's supposed to be near Corsica somewhere. Lara says she wants to go there to find the part of the stone and he offers to give her a contact.
Chapter 5.
Location: Corsica
Lara is in a small town in Corsica. She has to find her way to the docks where the historian's contact is supposed to wait her. XX's mercenaries attack. After fighting some of them, Lara finds a motorbike in one courtyard. Then you do all the stuns driving on your motorbike and shooting the baddies. When you get to the docks a boss awaits: mister XX. Lara leaves her motorbike and fights him. After she kills him, she finds historian's contact whick takes her to the open sea…
Chapter 6.
Location: Underwater
This level takes place underwater. She has an oxygen bottle. You drive a UPV to get to the boat and once inside a boat you swim. You have to get through many rooms on the boat to get to the one where is the artifact. On your way you fight many enemies, including a shark (something like a boss on this level). When you find the stone piece, you have to get back to your UPV. Then Lara goes back to the surface.
Lara decides to go to Turkey next. Alister has found a tomb that linked to king Arthur in the past, so Lara believs that the door to Avalon should be in that tomb.
Chapter 7.
Location: Turkey tomb
Lara goes through that tomb in Turkey jumping and solving puzzles. She finds nothing at the end of the tomb, though, so she is upset. This isn't the right tomb. The historian calls in and says that he has heard of a tomb raider that currently lives in Istanbul who is also trying to find that tomb. He suggests that she could visit him and that they could work together. Lara never heard of a tomb raider living in Istanbul, so she is curious. „What's his name?“ she asks. „Her“, the historian says, „it's Amanda Evert.“ How predictable.
Chapter 8.
Location: Istanbul tomb/Amanda's place
Lara has found Amanda's place in Istanbul. She will sneak to it. This level happens at night. In the first part, you have to sneak to Amanda's place over the rooftops. Then, once inside her house, you have to get rid of all of her bodyguards and find her. She's in her living room.
Lara and Amanda talk and Amanda suggests they could work together. Lara doesn't like that proposition, but as Amanda is the only one that knows where is the real tomb, she accepts.
In this part of the level, Amanda is your guide. The tomb is located under the old library in Istanbul. You have to get rid of some guards and Amanda can help you there. Once inside the tomb, you solve different puzzles until you get to the final room. There you have to fight the boss – the guardian of this tomb.
After that, Lara realises that the door aren't in this tomb either and that Amanda has tricked her. They fight (similar to that in Bolivia Redux) and Amanda tolds Lara the real door are in a church in Romania and that they could go there together. Lara doesn't think so, so she shoots Amanda and leaves the tomb.
Zip and Alister realise that a trip to Turkey was just a waste of time. Lara dissagress. She found out one thing: It's easy for a frien to turn into an enemy, but it's never easy for an enemy to turn into a friend.
Chapter 9.
Location: Romania
Lara is in that church in Romania. The atmosphere is dark, something like England in tr7. Lara solves puzzles and traps and shoots some guards here until she finds the final room in which the door are located. She puts the stone into the door and all around her becomes Avalon.
Chapter 10.
Location: Avalon
In this level, Lara is in Avalon. Avalon looks very dark, but also artistic. Something like the Land of the looking glass in American McGee's Alice, if you've played it. Here you fight the thoughest enemies and solve the hardest puzzles. You don't get any help from Zip or Alister because the connection doesn't work here. After some time, at the end of the tombthere is a sort of a prison, where Lara finds her mother locked in a cell. She is still young, age doesn't change in Avalon. They talk and then Lara has to go to the final room. There she finds king Arthur which isn't very happy that she is here. He's a boss. After defeating him, from his body rises a monster. The monster takes Lara's mother and enters in her, so then you have to fight Lara's mother herself. She is the final boss. Her attacks hurt badly, and she is faster than you. After defeating her, she falls to the groung. Life is leaving her. Lara is sad as she watches her mother die. After some time, she leaves the room silently. The camera zooms out. We see the whole setting of Avalon and the end credits.
:D
Oh, I forget to add: a vehicle is a must!
How about a large (it would have to be LARGE :D) level which Lara can explore on foot for part of the way, then she finds a vehicle, gets on it, and then she can explore further into the level, as well the places that she just came through, but which had some inaccesible areas (but which can now be accessed with the vehicle).
What kind of vehicle? Well, personally I prefer boats, but even a motorbike would do. Basically the vehicle should help Lara explore the level better (think of the motorbike in the Cairo levels of TR4). Absolutely NO scripted, linear sequence like the awful bike chases in Legend.
