Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition: The Facts
As many fans already know, the Tomb Raider series was handed over to game developers Crystal Dynamics when Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness was a huge failure with fans. The game was rushed (therefore filled with bugs and glitches) and many people felt that Lara was far too out of character.
Mourning over this, Core Design (the original creators of the series) began making a remake of the original Tomb Raider game, considered the greatest of all entries in the series. The game would be as close to the original as possible, but feature new moves and modern graphics. It was planned for release on the PSP, PS2 and possibly for the PC.
As Core Design very secretly (the public had no idea of this) continued making the 10th anniversary edition, Crystal Dynamics planned a brand new adventure for Lara Croft . . . Tomb Raider: Legend, which has been a hit. Shortly before the release of Legend, Crystal Dynamics claimed that they were working on a 10th anniversary edition of Tomb Raider 1 and 2.
With the game 80% complete, SCi (game publishers) cancelled the project almost a month ago. Fans were still unaware of them working on a new game. Eventually, a trailer was leaked on the internet showing clips of the game. It caused much controversy, especially since the title of the trailer suggested that the game had been cancelled. The trailer was banned from viewing, and is difficult if not impossible to find on the Internet.
Although Core Design's 10th anniversary of the game has been officially cancelled and will never see the light of day, Crystal Dynamics are still working on a game featuring remakes of both the first and second games in the popular Tomb Raider games. The game is planned for November this year, although there have been many different release dates announced. Among them from play.com, is September 29th. There haven't been any details on CD's version, so keep checking back here for more information.

hehe this is funny.
Excuse me????????
Sorry but the only things that have been announced is that Core Design was sold to Rebellion and that the Core Design TR1 remake project has been cancelled. :p
EDIT: Oops, sorry, and it was announced by SCi that there would be a 10th anniversary edition released this year.

Wrong. 10th anniversary edition was started 9 months ago. Get your 'facts' right.
You cant post a topic called, "THE FACTS" about something and then fill it with rumors and speculation.....
All we know is.....
Core was working on this project, and it was cancelled......
thats basically all we know from Cores official statement at this time....
I doubt Core was designing the game "in secret"....im prety sure that would have been Illegal.....as Eidos owns the rights to the game.....

Maybe Eidos asked both Core Design and Crystal Dynamics to make a remake of TR1 for the 10th anniversary. But only the better of the two would be released.
That would explain why Crystal Dynamics isn't in charge of the later versions of TRL (PSP, GC, NDS, GBA). And that would explain why Core's remake was cancelled despite being at 80% of completition.

I didn't think this had actually been officially announced yet: to my knowledge all we have on this front is:
sources have suggested Crystal Dynamics will continue to press ahead with a Tomb Raider / Tomb Raider II remake with original Lara Croft architect Toby Gard leading the project.
Maybe Eidos asked both Core Design and Crystal Dynamics to make a remake of TR1 for the 10th anniversary. But only the better of the two would be released.
Paying them to only choose which is better just doesn't seem like a wise business choice. If they actually did anything similar to that, they would only hold a meeting with both design teams and discuss things within the game. Getting an idea pitch is a lot cheaper for the company than to have two design companies build something and can one.
What gets me is that, Eidos were obviously aware that Core were developing this game (It was only cancelled a month ago wasn't it?). They also obviously must have given them permission to work on it, no?
Why let them produce a game of 80% completion and then cancel it?
I'm telling you now, if I was any member of that Core team working on, what looked like a legendry game in the making, I would be absolutely fuming.

NOTICE FROM Tomb Raider Fan Notice Board at Crystal Dynamics Centre USA . After Tomb Raider Legend being one of the most successful games of this year, Eidos and Crystal Dynamics have agreed to continue work on the franchise. But what can we expect next? Returning to the Past. Well a remake game is in the works at the moment, called Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition which marks 10 years since the first Tomb Raider game, and this game will feature the first Tomb Raider and the second as they are remade. Using the model of Legend and graphics, moves, environments, weapons. The games are expected to hit stores November 2006. And will be released on PSP and PS2. This will probably be the last Tomb Raider game on PS2, Eidos have confirmed that thoughts of a legend follow up may make it onto the PS2 but at the moment Eidos and Crystal Dynamics are looking at giving Tomb Raider is debut on the Play Station 3.
It looks like fact to me.
What Tomb Raider Fan Notice board? When I saw that I looked and looked for a forum or site that had that info and I could not find it. I think the person who posted that was mistaken... there is not Crystal D forum.
I don't believe any of the nonsense coming out about the remake anymore. I don't want to frustrate myself with it.
I think MellowYellow posted something about that (joe_16s post) yesterday, something about how publishers will fund game but some things don't go accordingly so they cancel for some reason. Vague, I know.
TRLover I don't mean to be negative about this... I think its a good idea to have something posted that is fact only, so that people can see what is really speculation... but you will find out that even the announcements that Eidos post change... :hea: :) So how do you know what is speculation and what is real news? :)
Where is that notice board Trlover?
Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition: The Facts....
You are regularly starting threads with "the facts" in the title, yet they are often no more than a collection of half-confirmed truths and speculation. Please stop it, it's very misleading.

Exactly my feelings on it. When a remake is announced and has an official release date, then maybe I will start getting excited. Till then, meh with all this back and forth junk.
What we do know is that Eidos owns the copy right to TR. Core works for Rebellion now. Eidos/SCi cancelled the Core project when it was evident that the sale to Rebellion was going to be finalized. TR is Eidos' money maker. It makes sense to Eidos/SCi to have CD, who they own, do the remake project insted of another company, Rebellion, with whom they would have to share the profit.
Both Core and CD have very competent staffs. Both could do the remake but now it looks like it will be CD. Live with it.

I'm just wondering where They got it from, because if CD had announced something I'm positive tlr would've picked up on it before now - maybe these are his 'sources'.
I think what Rivendell is asking is where is this???
NOTICE FROM Tomb Raider Fan Notice Board at Crystal Dynamics Centre USA
It's about time Eidos got of their back sides and made an official announcement as to what is planned.

Yes. Core's website said so.
is it CONFIRMED its cancelled ?
The Core Design TR1 remake project is cancelled according to the Core Design website. But that does not mean the project is cancelled entirely, for Core Design it is cancelled.
EDIT: TRL beat me. :P
So I wonder what this 'very exciting news' is that Core is dying to tell us about.

I believe it was also you who started a thread about either the remake or the PSP version which had "the facts" in the title and it was pure speculation. Unfortunately, because this forum doesn't have a search feature (why?) and as it has also disabled half the useful control panel features, such as being able to find my own posts (why not?), I can't find the thread right now.
If it wasn't you, then I apologise.

You're so mean! But right of course. But, compared to some of the posts that i've seen in the past 2 weeks it is quite accurate. Only the timeline is wrong really.
I can give you an official (unofficial) Core score of 8.5 / 10 for accuracy :D
Hello again :tmb:
Was there any chance that Core could've 'fought' to keep making the remake? Or was it a 'you must stop making it' type of thing?

Thats is probably confidential information that we cant really go into detail about.
Sorry.

The funny thing here is that the fans are always pitting Crystal and Core against each other, yet there are probably a lot of people in both companies that know and like each other; probably a lot of friendships there. And there probably is no real animosity towards each other (maybe for EIDOS and SCI there is though!).

I'ma go out on a limb here and speak for the Core guys...
They cannot answer ANY question- no matter how little, or how differently it is worded every time- about Tomb Raider AE beyond the fact that they were making it and now they are not. .

Thats pretty much it :)
We cannot talk about anything that would reveal confidential informaiton about Core (i.e. us), Rebellion, Sci or Eidos (although the last two are now technically the same thing)
I think we can talk about the cancelled game, i.e. what was in it, how we developed it etc. (as long as we dont actually reveal any development secrets) because we are not going to release it we wont be giving anything away will we :)
BTW, I dont work on that team so i dont know that much about the actual game itself.
As for why it was cancelled and Eidos's announcement that CD is doing a similar game we cannot say more than the official announement. Because any info would be the confidential buisness dealings of Eidos which we cant talk about.
I hope that clears it up :)
