View Full Version : Your Perfect Tomb Raider Remake?

Time for some more speculation. :D

Would you like to see the game stay as truthful to the original as possible (apart from the graphics, obviously), or would you welcome a few updates? Are there any features from Legend or the later TRs (i.e Legend's weapon console, the light-thing attatched to her back-pack, etc.) you would like to see?

I would like to see the return of:

- The ring menu
- Lara's original outfit (with either tied back hair or a braid ala TR2-5) - if they change her outfit in the game the way they change Lara's outfit to black on the NGage, I swear I'll scream
- No headset
- The original music scores, perhaps a few more added, though
- Limitless medipacks and heavy-duty weapons - I know it's unrealistic, but, for goodness sake, it's a video-game. I could understand if the entire game was striving for realism (like Team Soho's The Getaway), but it's not!
- The original gold lettering for the title (I prefer the American title style), instead of this silver movie stuff.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lara gaining the light on her backpack, and also the Tomb Raider III mansion, only with even stuff to play with. And the ORIGINAL hunched over Jeeves, not this spritely fellow from Legend.

Basically, I think my perfect TR remake would be Tomb Raider I, with influences from TRII and III (such as the braid, flares, mansion, etc). And graphics from Legend. Movement, I can take both the new and old style. :)

What would yours be?

And mods, will we be getting a forum dedicated to the new game now it's been announced? :)

They should add some new areas to the game that weren't there before and move items and enemies around wherever it might make sense to do so. This will freshen the game up for those who've played the originals multiple times. I wouldn't want them to tinker too much with the basic elements of the game--keep flares instead of the light for instance (although the light was good, but that's because Legend was made with it in mind).

Perfect remake:

-Classic Music
-TR3 Mansion but with better graphics:D
-Unlimited backpack
-Classic menu ring
-Classic Lara :D

RAID

- Legend Movement and Model. (No grid based system)
- The ring menu
- No headset
- Lara's original outfit + ability to change outfits
- Story so far...
- Old soundtrack with the creepy noises in caves and stuff
- Carry one weapon at a time with limited ammo.
- AJ style reloading (and pls, this time don't reload the weapons when they're withdrawn Crystal)
- The original gold lettering for the title, instead of this silver one used in the movies, AOD and Legend.
- Flares/PLS
- Binoculars (No RAD Mode) just plain binoculars to see farther.
- Old training mansion back where Lara tells you press this then that. With old gardens, assault course, race track and stuff.
- Vehicles in TR1
Motions, like Lara shiverring in snow, shaking her head to get water out of her hair when coming out of the water or in the rain, etc...
- Random weather effects in mansion
- Weather effects in levels (Like snow in Peru, sand storms in egypt, etc...)
- Targeting two targets at a time with Lara's dual guns.
- Facial expression
- Not over used Physics sytem.
- Not over used keys and switches
- No hints. We're not stupid.

- Vehicles in TR1

I think it would be really cool to let us "play" the bit where Lara rides her bike onto Natla's boat - I'm sure it'll be far easier to achieve that sort of gameplay now than it was in 1996.

The perfect TR re-make! :p

Lara from TR legend
Lara's Mansion from TR 3 but a bigger outside
Bottomless backpack returns! :D
Classic TR theme returns
Some new areas to explore
classic ring menu system :)

What would ruin the re-make! :hea:
Headset
Alister and Zip :cen: no way can they be in the re-make!
Mercs!

What I would like to see:

-Weather (rain, snow, etc.)
-Gold Tomb Raider lettering
-PLS (Never liked the flares)
-No more hints please!
-Tr 3 Mansion
-Original complex level desing (Not so linear >_<)
-NATLA (obviously better graphics)

My perfect Tomb Raider Remake? Core's Project. Honestly.

However, as that's been catapoulted out of a window, here's what I'd like to see:

TR1 with legends graphics.
-Big jumps again
-Invent wheel
-Our weapons
-the same puzzles
- Vehicles, Hmm. I think they probably will do the 'ride Lara's bike onto the boat' bit, though I'm usure of it myself.
- original costume
-No Barbie-clothes Lara
-BRAID
-Original music
-Level design
-Style movements, graceful dives, not 'forward flicks' a la legend..
-NO AUTOGRAB
-NO SPINNING TARGETS
-NO ZIP/ALISTER
-NO SHINY TIPS / Any other monstrosity from legend
-NO GRAPPLE

I think that covers it .

I sooooo see CD making that an interactive cut scene where all we do is move her left or right and make her jump off the bike... :( I too would love to play the part, in it's entirety, by myself, no help from the game.

You do realize that interactive cut-scenes exist so that things can be "done" by the player that can't be "done" during normal gameplay, right? What game engine would allow you to fluidly do all the things in those cut-scenes in such a seamless and cinematic way?

Okay, maybe not everyone feels the same way. But I don't care if it is not fluid, I am sure they can make a bike scene where you cross over to the boat. Sure, maybe it would not be as 'pretty' as an interactive cutscene, but tbh, I don't care about pretty graphics, I care about gameplay. I didn't say I dislike cutscenes, I do, they help move the story along. Just not ones which say PRESS SQUARE NOW!

Rivendell
16-06-06, 18:25
Thinking about it - we could've done all the interactive cutscenes legend gave us (possibly with the exception of the train one) .. (No, actually that was perfectly possible too) manually. It would've made the game a heck of a lot more TRy.
I can only hope Toby Gard runs one tight ship.

*An extra level featuring Lara on motorbike. It could be called 'The Egyptian Mountains' or something like that.
*New graphics.
*Fluid movement.
*Better graphics
*Pole-swinging.

Stay TRUE to the original...but update it with legends CONTROLS !!!!

(Maybe even get rid of autograb)

NO crappy mercs...
NO crappy techno-pop...
NO crappy bullet time...
NO crappy 'limited' backpack...
NO crappy legend swimming controls...
NO crappy two-weapons only scheme...
NO crappy shortening of the levels and making them linear...
NO crappy patronising unnecessary flashing objects or onscreen advice...
NO crappy 'checkpoint' system....STAY ORIGINAL !!!! (ie save crystals)
NO CRAPPY ZIP/HEADSET !!!!!!!!!! !
NO making the game easier....it was challenging, and FUN !!!

Im open to them using the legend engine, I know theyll add swing poles and ledge jumping...thats fine. BUT STAY TRUE TO THE GAME THAT MADE THE ENTIRE SERIES SUCCESSFUL IN THE FIRST PLACE. Change it TOO MUCH and i predict there WILL be SEVERE BACKLASH !!!!

Not that they were very much needed or anything. Cause TR7 is just way too easy.

I would say they do exactly what core was going to do even make the veteran TR players like us think and not expect whats coming! For example In ST. FRancis folly add Two more keys and rooms to unlock the door to Collesum. In collesum the same add more traps and areas with cages of gorillas and bears and lions. Also the same for lost valley and qualepec move some things around maybe you have to get 5 cogs instead of 3 maybe you don't get cogs but a different object, in qualepec you have to open6 gates instead of three, it would just prolong the game give us new areas to explore stuff like that. Defintley leave enemies that are there maybe add some more where you didn't expect maybe add new different kinds like in peru in the lost valley add some ankle biter dinos, Tradacles, maybe even tricaratops! In Greece add some snakes on the ground just make the enviroment more livlier with animals. IN egypt, snakes, of course pumas more mummies. And atlantians have different kinds new ones. A light source or not I really don't care! I like legends inventory except let me hold atleast 3 guns the whole time, less ammo pick ups, and medi pack pick ups because even the original had too many! So interactive cut scenes but not during parts that we could already originally play, just for new areas or levels! Extras such as beable to play the game exactly like the classic, just graphics are updated. Vehicles. Oh maybe even a level that has several areas in itself like last revelation so you have to combine objects like last revelation, I thought that was the coolest thing ever in tomb raider! So maybe there are several different pieces but you can go into any path. And defintely have the first level instead of peru, you actually get to take out bigfoot like the first cutscene shows of lara talking to larson and how she took bigfoot out. That would be cool! And secrets should be a little different than the original !

Laras home should be like legend but bigger like TR 3 with a full court yard, trophy room stuff like that!

WhosaidAODwasbad
16-06-06, 19:42
Exactly I don't mind lara auto-aim. Have the same thing you can switch wolves maybe even one gun on each wolf with pistols. But no spinning targets just have her look at them or center on screen, But defintley be able to switch targets easier like legend not the old fashion where you had to stop shooting to switch! Because spinn targets is kinda military/james bond tactical shooter its doesn't fit in tomb raiders enviroments!

-Improved Graphics
-not TR3 mansion like others said its to other the top =S
TR2 mansion was alot better
-Improved controls
-No Pole-swinging hated it in Legend =/
-No control of Vehicles. Vehicles always suck bad in TR games it makes the game feel cheaply made and very rushed and besides there is a good reason for high quaility cut sceans
-original sound track remade though
-same puzzles/story line except changes where nessecy with the new graphics and all they will have too.

My perfect re-make would have to be as much like the original as possible. So, no grappling hook, no headset, and a big NO! to shiny hints. Basically, they should just update the graphics and slightly modify the levels so we can use the new moves. Everything else (music, dialogues, storyline, general level design) should be left unmodified.

I just want them to respect the original masterpiece. This means (to me):

NO Headset. Could you imagine having Zip and Alister chatting to you in Lost Valley? Tomb of Tihocan? Sanctuary of the Scion? Atlantis? Just the thought makes me want to cry - the reality would be simply unbearable...

NO 'lets replace exploring the terrain with a series of swingy bars' game play. I want Lara to be able to have the freedom to go anywhere that she had in the original. If we end up with the railroaded gameplay style of Legend, it will just confirm to me how much gaming has degenerated over the last few years - if we could do vast, explorable areas in 1996, we can damn well do them in 2006!

No 'choose from 12596 outfits!' gameplay. Please - Tomb Raider isn't about outfits. It never was about outfits. It is about exploration and discovery. I don't mind too much if her outfit changes in game (although i think even that is superfluous), but if unlockable outfits become the reward for things in the remake, there will be serious tantrumming in this corner.

Limit the use of the grapple to a minimum, and a big fat NO to the shiny hint system. Tweaking the levels to cater for Lara's new moveset (crawing, climbing, monkey swing, pole swing, rope climb etc.) is fine (although I personally don't want to see difficult terrain navigation to reach higher areas replaced by climbing a ladder, as it was in TR2), but replacing every long jump with a shiny 'X' and a grapple jump is a bad, bad, bad move. Give Lara back her chasm-spanning jumps, please!

Original style secrets, inventory ring and weapon choices, please (this includes NO spinning targets, too). Big, head-sized shiny rewards are even more faker than finding shotgun cartridges (that work after being found underwater) in an ancient tomb. TR1 actually didn't have a huge arsenal - just pistols, a shotgun, magnums and uzis. People often forget this - it was in later TRs that the arsenal got ridiculous. Also - I KNOW it's realistic, but what is it with spacky reloading in modern gaming? (I've been put off so many games by the reload times of weaponry. 'Shoot! Shoot! Shoo... oh, damn, reload whilst enemy says 'Yum yum!' and munches on my reloading arse. Especially since (in a lot of cases) the reloading animation means you can't do anything else during that time...) Give me back my magic pistols! Combat in TR is like a puzzle - something to overcome and a hazzard whilst trying to find out the ultimate truth. TR is NOT an FPS. The main goal ISN'T to kill things. So who really cares if she has an unrealistic set of pistols?

Go back to the classic swimming controls. Lara was a sleek as an otter when swimming in the classics - I could make her do near enough anything. In Legend, I managed to drown her in her own frickin' pool, the controls were so counter-intuitive and, well, stupid. Even after I got used to them, I would end up yelling (and I'm sorry if this offends, but it is true...) 'SWIM! SWIM! Oh, for gods sake, SWIM, you stupid, big titted tart (actually, I called her something other than a 'tart', too, but that really isn't appropraite here!)! If you drown, you'll only have yourself to blame!'. I nevr felt that frustration with the old swimming controls, and the thought of having to tackle some of the larger underwater section with Legend swimming controls brings me out in a cold sweat...

And, for the love of all things good... NO interactive cutscenes. Just no. No no no no. If I hear rumour that they are going to make it into the game, I am investing in a lump hammer. Just like the ones certain London gangsters employ on people who displease them... Interactive cutscenes are the product of lazy, lazy gameplay design. Can't be arsed to figure out how to let the gamer do it? Stick in an interactive cutscene. Can't be bothered to devise a proper puzzle? Interactive cutscene it is. Worried that those with a room-temperature IQ and the attention span of a concussed kitten will 'get fwustrwated and have a temper tantwum because the nice, pwetty, arse waggling lady won't solve the nasty, hard puzzles for you'? Ahhh! My good friend the interactive cutscene, step forward! Blargh. They are just so wrong - Hell has a special place reserved just for interactive cutscenes...

Lastly... MAKE THE REMAKE FOR THE EXISTING FANS!! Legend was for the newbies. TR8 is going to be the one that clinches them. Make TR:AE for us. My case in point - Advent Children. I nearly wept with joy watching that - even though (as an FF fan) I found it pretty incomprehensible the first time I watched it, it didn't feel the need to dumb it down to kindergarten levels for the people who hadn't played the game. It said 'this is for the fans, and therefore we are going to treat them with respect. We are going to assume they know the story behind FF7 well. We are going to assume they know the characters and therefore we don't need to introduce them. We are NOT going to spoonfeed our audience - it would be an insult to them'... and, as an FF fan, I was grateful for that respect. TR:AE should be there for the people who already love the series. (That and the fact that it wasn't too hard and challenging 10 years ago... if people complain that it is now, then there is something SERIOUSLY and WORRYINGLY wrong with people's intellect nowadays...).

Basically, dumb TR:AE down at your peril. If this gets screwed up, and the headset, the shiny clues and spinning targets get included along with all the long jumps being replaced by the grapple and the terrain navigation and exploration replaced by swingy bars and linear corridors... well, you'll definitely have lost at least one hardcore TR fan, because I certainly won't stand for it.

Oh, and yeah, I'll probably rent it first, just to make sure...
