View Full Version : Swimming Controls: 'Classic' or 'Legend' ?

Hey guys,
We all know TR1 has a fair amount of swimming (my FAVOURITE part of Tomb Raider !!!)
So...
Would you like the remake to have the original controls? Or the legend controls?
Personally, I saw nothing wrong with the classic style and found them a LOT easier and more fluid than Legends; one button to swim as opposed to three (rise, sink, speed up)...
So... I want the CLASSIC controls
Oh, and is anyone looking as forward to the swimming sections as I am??? They were phenomenal...and the thought of them in PS2 graphics makes me one happy bunny :D
Just think of the submerged sanctuary of the scion!!! Or the Cistern and its crocodiles... Or climbing out of the water at the foot of Tihocan's Tomb.... [GOBSMACKED !!!]
Comments... ?
Classic, no question.
There were angles in legend I couldn't swim in like I could in the classics - it felt a lot more restricted to what it used to be, so I vouch for Classic.
Obviously classic swimming controls. Legend swimming controls were just stupid and horrible. I loved swimming in classic trs and hated it in legend. Classic controls made legend fun. Legend was just terrible for swimming. Classic swimming controls all the way.
I would defineatly want classic controls, the swimming controls for Legend weren't as easy to go up and down and side to side.

Classic - i also want to be able to walk, backflip and side flip - how else you gonna fight a trex - jump off its head and use bullet time? In TRL she only jumped knee height!!!

You do know this thread is about swimming controls not controls in general? Anyway I do agree with what you said and I'd like classic controls back.
I hope that if they keep the legend engine, then they let her jumps return to their former glory in size - I really do.

Hehe.. !! Your opinion on swimming controls Undertaker?
Currently all in favour of classic controls so far !!!!
And to add to my initial post...can you imagine trying to frantically swim awar from a crocodile down those narrow passages with the Legend controls.... O go down, X go up...T speed up speed up speed up SPEED UP...... ARGHHH !!! I'm getting flustered just thinking about it....haha

I like the Legend swimming controls. I thought it was easier and I like the extra buttons because we get more control over the swimming. I don't really remember the classic swimming controls, but I do remember that I'd always get frustrated using them.
One thing I don't like about swimming in Legend is that there's never anything in the water to chase you! When I first played Legend and swan-dived into the Ghana water for the first time, I was like "OMG SOMETHING'S TOTALLY GONNA BITE MY LEG OFF!" and was so disappointed to find that there was nothing in the water. :(

classic. no control problem that even AoD had compared with the clunkiness of the swimming in legend.

So... I want the CLASSIC controls
Fully agreed.
I like the Legend swimming controls. I thought it was easier and I like the extra buttons because we get more control over the swimming.
I felt the opposite - I can do stuff with the classic swimming controls that I can't do with legend's. Swim spiralling downwards and 'pull up' out of it, if you can picture that - you can't do that in legend, it looks weird. The controls are a lot more oppressive and constrained.

Yeah i have to agree, classic, although i could cope with the legend ones, and TR1 has more under water area's so we would have more chance to get used to it.
LOL bullet time on a T-Rex!! :vlol:
LMAO. Bring it on I say!!! :D
Oh, and is anyone looking as forward to the swimming sections as I am??? Me of course! I adore all the water bits in all the TRs. Even just the swimming in the beautifully crafted mosaic pools is something I'm looking forward too, not to mention the larger areas. Hope they keep them tempting luxurious green and blue colours.
Definitely classic controls.
Or climbing out of the water at the foot of Tihocan's Tomb.... You mean where the centaur statue bursts into life. Awesome part of the game. To this day, even after numerous replays, all that neighing and hoofy noises give me the chills, hehe, can't wait to see the upgraded version. :D
Wonder what those massive underwater statues will look like too, the one's that Lara has to scramble down once the water level is dropped... Oh, so many great things to look out for!
Honestly, it doesn't matter to me, the swim controls were elegantly simple in TR1 but were not hard to use in legend either. Seeing we control her now with the directional joystick instead of keypad it may actually be easier to have seperate up and down buttons while swimming. I do agree they don't want to get it all complicated and awkward like some of the controls in AOD.
Classic controls!
Im so used to the classic controls of the earlier games and I always found them easier then Legends water controls. :)
Legend's. In old TRs I would always get her stuck in these like little slits you had to swim through and she would keep drowning. :hea:
The first time I saw TR was in a huge electronic store. Lara was swimming on their big screen in the tunnels in the fish first level. I was awed. I was hooked.
Needless to say, lets get back to the original swimming and breathing length. Why mess with perfection.

Lol.... a bad workman always blames his tools...hehe
And if youve played TR1....youll know there are many more nooks and crannies, and swimming requires a great deal of precision...
If anything, you'd get more stuck with the Legend controls that the old ones...
...Just a thought....

I don't mind either, but I think legend is more precise, you don't have to worry about going up and down with the anologe stick and instead press a simple button once you get used to legends swiming its a cake. Although you can only swim in TWo levels right?

Fish? In TR1??? I don't remember any fish in TR1... and I just replayed it a week ago! :p I think you are mistaking it with a later TR... ;) All I saw swimming in the water with lara were crocs and rats in TR1. Later we got fish we couldn't interact with (india and south seas) and sharks and barracudas (the ship wreck)

classic controls. i hated that in legend you had to always be switching buttons just to navigate. i could never get that. luckily there wasnt alot of swimming in legend or i wouldve gotten really frustrated.
Classic controls, no doubt. I actually liked Legend's control system except for the swimming. I don't understand why they over-complicated a perfectly good control method by having seperate buttons for 'swim up' and 'swim down'. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :D

to me, the legend swimming was more grid based then the classic, and the classic was more flued.
I don't mind. Classic or Legend, it's okay for me.
I played TR1 on the PC and seem to remember that swimming was controlled by the direction keys, up, down, left right and you pressed another key to move forward. Am I remembering right? How was it handled on the PS2?
Geez CLASSIC of course!!:D I mean, with Legends swimming engine won't get Lara anywhere and she'd be dead before she even reaches her destination in underwater travels:D Although Legend's swimming engine was actually more realistic (controls were terrible though), CLASSIC Tomb Raiding swimming should be my vote:)
*I even miss the sound of her swimming underwater:D

Netheir...full 3D mouse control when underwater...
Brother Rumblebottoms
17-06-06, 08:44
Yep I really feel much more comfortable with the Classic Swimming:D I hope they will keep that (and Lara's amazing ability to stay quite long under water; not as in Legend - although that's more realistic but who cares).
Netheir...full 3D mouse control when underwater...
Yeah. That's just so practical for us PS2 players...
Classic, all the way. The old adage is true in this case - 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it!'
l am not fussed, liked both, but if they use Legend controls she will need to be able to hold her breath longer. And l hope they keep the sound of her swimming similiar to the original. The double sounds always freak me out because l am thinking there is something else swimming in there with her :vlol:
I feel better with the classic swimming, so much more freedom!;)
Classic definitely. Or at least classic-like. The Legend control system is awesome in general, but the swimming controls specifically are somehow awkward.
Except for if they keep the Legend swimming style, but improve it a bit.

I think it was a case of 'change for change's sake' - which is rarely a good thing when you add 'if it's not broke, why fix it?'

Classic controls, please.
I've just thought of something re: swimming in legend and for the remake.
The Amount of time she could hold her breath - there's a HUGE difference. I was popping up for air every 20 ish seconds in legend, but I think they're going to HAVE to change this for the remake:
Beneath the Sphinx - that lake, the near bottomless depths of it with the gigantic structures beneath it, legend Lara would drown even thinking about it! They're going to have to change and let her hold her breath like she used to, because I don't think air pockets would work too well here ;)

Legend's. In old TRs I would always get her stuck in these like little slits you had to swim through and she would keep drowning. :hea:
That was down to the slits, not the controls.

I know I am in the minority but I hope Legends controls are used for the swimming in the TR re-make :)
They were easy and intuitive - I really don't see why so many people can't get use to them?

The classic swimming controls were much easier and simple though - it was a case of change for changes sake = stupid move. There's ways you can swim with the old controls that you can't with the new ones.
1 button, and directions = simple, easy, unrestrictive movement
3 buttons - up/down/forwards = needlessly "complex" and restrictive when the classics worked so well.

Eh?
The "classic" controls for swimming were Ok but Legends are so much more fluid and intuitive :)
I don't think they changed the controls just for the sake of it, they made swimming a pleasure, for me anyway :)
Changing something for the sake of it would be when Core changed the Square button to Circle - to jump in AoD - pathetic! :hea:

Why have two buttons for up and down plus another button for speeding up plus directional buttons when you can hold down one button and go in any direction you want. Classics were alot more fluid as you could go in any direction you wanted with ease only using one button.

Just remember folks, legend was basically a BETA test, so if you dont like something, they can always change it. I reckon, they'll keep making tomb raider in BETA testing, until everyone is actually suited (well, almost everyone) with the game. They cant afford to have another stupid mistake like AoD (no offence, was a alright game, LOVED the proning hehehe)

Yeah. That's just so practical for us PS2 players...
Uhm...I always play game on PC because PC had a thing called mouse which gives it an edge over console platform...
The beef I had with TRL swimming control is that it is a straight port from PS2...why the hell does CD bother to port the game to PC without taking advantage of its features??
If I'm gonna play game on PC, I'll use the fricking mouse...if I have to use a controller, I'll buy an X360...
I'm all for Classic swimming controls.
The classic controls were like controlling a plane: You choose a direction in 3D and go along this direction. The legend controls are like controlling a blimp or submarine: You control as if you were on ground and have extra controls for up/down.
I think both are intuitive and one can easily get used to them, but the classic system gives me much more freedom and precision when deciding where to go. Getting to a single exact spot with the Legend controls is more difficult than with the classic controls.
Classic swimming controls please!
Classic menu system please!
Classic storyline please!
Classic music!
No time trials!
No bull**** time!
No personal light source!
No autograb!
No gapple!
No PDA!
Just remake the game as it was with better graphics :D
oh god ,i can't remember the classic controls :( HELP !
Legend swiming mode is about as lame as it gets. Please give us back the original swiming abilities and magnifiant underwater levels.

Press Square and she swims, then direct her with D-pad. ;) So much easier.
I also want her to be able to hold her breath as long as she could before, she isn't supposed to be normal, she's supposed to be super human

Water combat...:D
Harpoon.....:D
Huge underwater Levels.....:D
Swimsuit.....:D
PLEASE CD !! Sort it out !!!!
Remember that huge water room in Diving Area TR2, with a load of swim-suit clad enemies? Those harpoon fights were great, or you could take them out from the high bridges :D
Playing Legend on the PC I soon adapted to the controls for the new game...that was until I tried to make Lara swim. I just couldn't stop myself using the old controls and found it a frustrating change from what was a good system.
So it would have to be Classic for me :D

NOOOO !!!! Harpoon is my FAVOURITE weapon !!!! It is incredibly stron and is massivly overrated....
Seriously....even on land... It takes down baddies in only a few hits... The only down side being that it takes a while to reload if moving...
I love replaying TR3 trying to use only the harpoon.... Seeng the little monkeys topple over... Wathing the men fall backwards as you fill their stomach with spears... Ahhhh, the memories...
I agree its a bit of a hassle underwater....but once you get the hang of it....it ROCKS !!! And for those people who dislike it....you can more often than not simply get out and shoot with the pistols !!! :D:D:D:D:D Hehe..
Pleeeeaase bring back the harpoon...AND THE OLD STYLE CONTROLS !!!!
:P
to answer the question
for swimming levels i also say classic config:D

i loved all of legend controles EXEPT the swimming. BRING BACK THE CLASSIC SWIMMING!!!! it just made more sence and was easier to controle.
With all this water talk:D (and I know this may sound irrelevant), this reminds me of all the great Tomb Trials levels on the PSP version of LEGEND 'cause they have some nice Tombs!!! I wish I can post the pictures from the PSP...other then capturing directly from webcam would be bad kinda...but the Tombs in Tomb Trials are great!! They should've been added to Legend storyline to make it longer:( especially the water levels/trials 'cause they look so ancient and ruins-fitting:D
I know this is a loosing fight, but I'm going with Legends controls for swimming. I liked them better, I felt like I had more (for lack of a beter word) control while swimming in legend. But she would need to be able to hold her breath longer.
Classic style.
In Legend, swimming was unnecessarily hard because of the extra buttons you had to use.
Classic, of course. I think almost all agree at this point, and various reviews noticed this too. So CD, you'll have to change it. :D

EXACTLY:hea: I felt like I was controling a SUBMARINE LARA:( Maybe they can still have the same speed in swimming and holding breath but at least one button for swimming and the analog stick would be up to you in goin' up and down, like the older tomb raider games..they should've done that in Legend but heck, what's done is done.

Definetly the classic, the new swimming controls were so annoying.

Why? Whats the point of having to press a button to dive, another button to surface, another button to go faster as well as using the analog stick when you can just hold down one button to swim and go in whatever direction you want like you could in classics?

I liked the new controls, I liked how she can swim at two speeds also. I think swimming was one of the few improvements in TRL over the old controls.

I'd say Legend. I've just gotten so used to it. Pishing the analog stick forward while hammering the triangle button like there's no tomorrow. :D The rest of the controls should be classic. Legend's controls were more "Lara Bond" than Lara Croft.
Just so clear it up, I'd like the old classic controls.....but they should still have the faster swimming, that was good.

I found the classic controls easier, I couldnt get to grips with the new swimming controls. When i wanted to go down she went up, and vice versa, very annoying :hea:
It took a while to get used to but the Legend controls were nice, with the faster swimming and all.
Classic, even if I like the faster swimming button. That was a nice improvement but... YOU COULDN'T USE IT!!! :hea: How could you press Triangle and X at the same time to reach the surface faster?!? IT'S NOT POSSIBLE FOR HUMANS!!! So get rid of the odd Legend Swimmng Controls  but you (CD) can keep the useful faster swimming button :D

I liked the new controls in Legend, but obviously I was more used to the classic ones. It took a bit of time to get adjusted to the newer ones when I got Legend. The faster swimming maneuver was difficult to pull off, but when done correctly, it did come in handy.
Overall, the classic controls seemed easier, but I think that's because I was used to them after playing six other games incorporating them. I liked Legend's swimming controls, I'd like to see them again.

Classic controls and classic lung capacity please!
Legend over complicated it as too many button combinations were required.
(I know it's not swimming - but swan diving was more difficult to pull off in Legend too.)

Thats got nothing to do with the controls. You can have perfect swimming controls like the classics and have good animations. You didn't mention anything about the controls, just the animations.

I really like Legends swimming I feel like I have more overall control, because of the dive and surface buttons, but I also cannot figure out how to swan dive. I would like to see I swimming in the future tomb Raiders to expand and put to the test legends swimming like TR2 did to the orignal swimming controls in the deep underwater shipwreak levels. The sequels needs a level like that if not a shipwreak maybe a deepsea cavern that leads to a temple under the sea something like Cleopatra's Palace but not that although I want Egypt Back its the best!

Classic. I haven't read the whooole 10 pages or so of this thread, but I think a lot of people have said it felt more like you were controlling lara, a person, more freely with the classic controls. I think that feeling is what's important and lost in Legend. To me, the legend swimming controls just sort of emphasised that you were moving around in a 3D created space, the classic controls felt a bit more natural. I think it's because legend's gameplay was more umm, arcadey than previous tomb raiders though, I suppose the newer controls would fit that theme but yuuuck.
With the faster swimming....why couldn't they have used how hard you push the analogue stick? Is that too clunky?
Hello there minority of one :wve: Welcome
Neither have I read all ten pages. I like the classic controls, or at least to have an option. Even if we has to buy a seperate controller? Cost doesn't compare to enjoyment (within reason) All buttons rule!
