[Multi] Eidos announce 'best of' Tomb Raider adventure
Contrary to recent rumblings across the internet, Eidos has revealed that Crystal Dynamics - the developer behind Tomb Raider Legend - is hard at work on a '10th anniversary edition' of Tomb Raider.
The Tomb Raider publisher had announced a special edition of Lara's adventures some months back and we discovered a trailer for a PSP remake of the classic action game stamped with a Core logo only a few days ago, along with a statement that the game had been canned. But Eidos has confirmed that the special edition Tomb Raider is still going ahead.
Apparently, Core was developing a PSP version and was unaware that Crystal Dynamics was also stuck into its own project. And while Core's game was a total remake of the original Tomb Raider, the now officially announced title from Crystal Dynamics will be more akin to the recent Splinter Cell Essentials game, drawing together Lara's greatest excursions into one adventure.
We can expect the anniversary edition to launch sometime in the next six months - possibly around November - when the very first Tomb Raider was released. That is, of course, unless Eidos is planning on celebrating Lara's 11th anniversary instead...

I've heard this rumour - that it wasn't going to be a faithful remake but a collection of levels done in the style of previous TR's - before.
Hmmm.. I wonder... kind of makes me even sadder that the Core remake won't see the light of day, but at the same time, I'm very excited to be playing new levels! Especially if they help CD get to grips with the ingredients of the Classic 'Raiders. :)
Yuuummm... new Egypt levels + mummies = deliciously terrifying prospect...

I must say I'm a bit disapointed if this is true.
I really want to play Lost Valley, Palace Midas, Colliseum and other levels from the first TR. If this is a collection, then many of the levels will be missed out in favour of others.

But, at the same time, I do know TR1 back to front, so new levels = a new TR challenge, and I'm always up for that :tmb:

If you read the Eidos statement correctly, you will see that they did NOT actually mention the word 'remake' at all. This has got me thinking....
This is why I should never get my hopes up...:(

Same here. By the way, I liked Tomb Raider Legend so I wouldn't mind another TR game like that, but it's just I'm not too keen on a remake of the original or anything like that...

If I am completely honest, I wouldn't mind a collection of levels from different TRs, not just tomb raider 1. But I'd like them to ask us what levels WE actually want to see and from what TRs. Then we can have a game combined with all our favourite levels. Course that doesn't mean that there would only be 1 from tr1. hmm.. don't mind either way tbh:)

I take it to mean that this story (if true) means that the Remake will be a collection of levels from all Tomb Raiders remade? If so, that makes me very happy! Sure, everyone will probably have a fave or two that doesn't make it but I'd love to have some TR3 in there rather than just TR1 or TR2...

From what I read, "new" levels aren't mentioned. So it would be, perhaps, the lost Valley, The Sanctuary of the Scion, Venice, Temple of Xian / Floating Islands, River Ganges, Aldwych, Lost City of Tinnos, ehm... half a level of any of those in TR4, then perhaps submerging in the submarine, coming up to play VCI, and finally a boss (of your choice).

mm....not suprising. As several people have mentioned this already(especially Joseph). I for one am not suprised, and though I would LOVE a complete remake, we have already played it! I think this best of idea is a pretty good one....they give us updated TR w/o trying to completley take it over and **** a ton of fans off in the process.

The anniversary edition just can't be a remake of the whole TR1. Let's face it. CD took some time to make TRL. Playing the original TR1 took at least four times as long as playing TRL. It's just not possible that CD started developing the anniversary edition after finishing TRL and be ready in november! I think the anniversary edition will be a collection of remakes of some former TR levels but not a whole game. People who hope the anniversary edition will be remakes of TR1 and TR2 are just a bit naive...though I like them a lot!

So they are puting together a collection of past TR levels into one game then, you know - never once did I see re-make mentioned in connection with Crystal's project :)
That sounds okay but it's still speculation right - no official comment from Eidos? ;)
I like the idea of re-playing the best levels of all the TR games in one handy Lara shaped disk! lol
But three cheers for Core :yah: they were making a whole re-make!

I think since CD took over Tomb Raider that we don't believe anything until its in our hands.
Legend showed and promised a lot that wasn't in the game. We aren't as trusting.

i was wondering the same thing. they would probably have like 1 level from aod just to keep the collection well rounded. i hope they dont have any levels from chronicles. but i would be willing to forgive it if they have the first 2 levels of tr3!!!!!! i loved the indian jungle and river granges. my favorite tr levels ever!!!!!
They might include some AoD's, but doubtful as it's hardly an 'old game', that'll probably be left a while.

This is the 10th Anniversary of the FIRST Tomb Raider, not any of the other sequels. What's the point of including levels from the other games in the series? This report is just coming from Games Radar (so who knows if they're just speculating), but I suddenly don't have a good feeling about this.

I hope some of AoD's classic levels are there, it would be boring just having every level in tombs, plus I hope they add no levels from TR4 - the levels were too jumbled up in TR:TLRevelation.
The south paciffic from TR3 would be a good level to re-play, as would the Tibet foothills in TR2!

Because a collection seems boring. And I have all the Tomb Raider games except for Lost Artifact and there would be no point for me getting another Tomb Raider game that has the same levels as the other Tomb Raider games. A remake seems much better. I'd like a remake of any Tomb Raider game, apart from Chronicles and Legend.:)
I dont mind if its not a full remake, a collection of the best Levels is good enough for me.

If this is true the game is gonna suck!!! How does Crystal Dynamics know the best levels.. they don't, the fans do. They should have did some kind of poll for our favorite level from each game.. I hope they atleast make her classic Mansion..

I would prefer a remake of Lara Croft's first outing (which brought forth massive groundswells) over a mere compilation of levels from the entirety of the series. I wish to be among an audience that shall witness a cluster of different levels but are connected with an engaging storyline; that is, indeed, a remake of the original Tomb Raider. :wve:

You guys need to stop jumping to conclusions here. Where are ANY of you getting that this has anything to do with TR3-6? CD has nothing good to say about those games, especially AOD. Please. We've already heard this has to do with the first game and possibly the second. So where you guys get your ideas is beyond me.
Anyway, start reading the FACTS, people. "Akin to the recently released Splinter Cell for PSP." Did you guys miss that? You must have gotten "so disappointed" after reading what UT said that you didnt even bare to figure anything out. Splinter Cell for PSP was technically a complete remake of the original-- or a port, whatever you prefer-- to the PSP system with added bonus levels.
I shouldnt have to say anything further. Take it for what you will but quit saying you are all so "disapointed" if you have no clue what it even is you are planning on being disapointed about in the first place. How old are you guys anyway?

So Legend was a disappointment to a few. Who cares. So was AOD.
Well if it was not going to involve at least remaking a fair bit of Tomb Raider one, Eidos would not have cancelled the Core project. The Only reason to cancell the Core project would have been if Crystal Dynamics had also been working on some thing similiar. You could have always had 2 Anniversary editions, with different names and content

BAd: NOt a full game if I want a compliation I could make my own not impossible or just get all my games and play at once only downside no new graphics.
Good: This sets the door open for a next-gen true remake! Truly life like.
My only question why isn't called Chronicles 2 or BEst of!? Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary Edition has TR1 writin all over it, its a bit of a mislead to gamers! Or why isn't it called Tomb RAiders' 10th Anniversary Edition then it would account for other games! HOw could they put acomplination together when Chronicles is pretty much that but hidden adventures and TR 4 doesn't really have levels at all its more AReas because you go back and forth back and forth! This is both exicting a disappointing at the same time! Its like INdiana jones complination they just show part of each movie about 45 minutes each for the three movies wouldn't that suck thats the way I feel suckard! I really would like a remake, after hearing this I could honestly wait till tomb raider 8 unless its a complination because its both TR1 and 2 games, could be possible right!?

But the word EDITION implies that it has more to do with the first one, as it is only the first one that turns 10 this year.
Under edition, in the dictionary, you can find:
"One that closely resembles an original; a version"
If the "official" title (do we even HAVE one yet???) was "10th Anniversary Celebration", then there would be more room for speculation. The word Edition narrows the field a bit. Unless those at Eidos no speakie english.

The point about it being akin to the redone Splinter Cell, as a full remake, and bonus levels seems to be closer to what would be logical. Although, all information about this is still just SPECULATION. Gamespy is hardly a concrete source of information.

We can only hope that is a redition of the original with some extra levels. I just got to City of Kamroon today and I am just amazed how amazing this game still is! I am not speculating on anything, but I can tell you the dissapointment if the game is not a fully rehash or remake of the original at least!

If I had to choose my favourite (and most challenging levels, for those who said that Legend was so easy) levels, I would like them to remake these:
TR1: Lost Valley, St Francis Folley, Palace Midas, Obelisk of Khamoon, Atlantis.
TR2: Temple of Xian.
TR3: Crash Site, Lost City of Tinnos.
TLR: Alexandria, Gizeh levels.
C: Nothing at all! :(

Most of the levels I chose are from TR1. I´m finishing all Trs once again...TR1 was great, as expected. TR2 started to get good at Temple of Xian, everything else felt a bit empty. TR3 is a bit difficult, with its crystal system and its hard enemies. TLR is fantastic, easy but long. C doesn´t deserve to be touched. AoD was good, I think I finally understood the controls :D
Please Crystal, focus on TR1. It´s the best choice!

Not to give in to more speculation, but I have gone to several sites, that are reliable! I found that some say it a compliation and others say Modern Action/Adventure! So right now we don't know because although it is from games radar there has yet to be an official annoucement by Eidos. Plus many rumors have said that this Anniversary Edition could be both TR1 and TR2 which both together would be consider a compliation! Plus, later in the PSone years playstation and eidos released a Collectors Edition of Tomb raider which included the first three games which is also considered a complination! HOpefully this is the turn out that the "Best of " game is no other than the best Two games in the series TR1 and 2! Highly possible I would say, especailly since you don't see too many games just do random level complinations like Essentials! I am still positive but lets wait to see what else comes!

Hall of season from AoD is an excellent choice! :tmb: The puzzles were unique, the traps outrageous, and the escape route treacherous! And the final boss at the end of the level was cool how you beat him! Definitely one of the best levels in AoD! :jmp:
AIYA I was afraid this kind of topic would burst from a small speculation yet becoming big:hea: AIYAAA I'd really cry if it's not the remake. Even saying the leaked video AND knowing that it's cancelled AND IF it's really only a compiilation would only make me want to cry because CORE tried to show their appreciation for us TR fans yet failed to release:( :( ...and the trailer video was...

Turns out Eidos/SCi are planning on celebrating Lara's 10th birthday by releasing a remake of her original adventure. We are talking improved graphics, new moves, the lot. If there is time, the "new" game will feature a remake of both Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II: The Dagger of Xian, but right now the developers are focusing on Lara Croft's first adventure.
And this was only updated since May 31st '06!! (The reference link is below)

Thanks AdamTheInept and thevman! :tmb: That would be my list. Do you know if they will be graphically enhanced? I didnīt choose any underwater level beacuse I donīt want to see those sharks ever again...or fully detailed sharks, which would be even worse! :D

...well on the other hand, 10th Anniversary Edition kinda relates to a sound of THE GREATEST HITS/BEST OF whenever 10 years are succeeded.

Don't be mislead this is really not official word until we hear it from the mouth of the lion it self! plus compliations can be several things, it doesn't always half to be a bunch of different levels! some one earlier pointed out that they may be just considering the first two games which have all the best levels overall! So it could be the fully games of both TR1 and 2 making it compliation! Plus, I think it would be harder to pick the best levels from all the games other than remaking just one! PLus Last REvelation doesn't really have levels they are more areas than anything! And last but not least Toby left TR because of the direction I think he was okay with the second game of course the first, but the others weren't really like those two although they are all great games!

So like many rumors have stated and as Joshorty has showed the Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition could only be one of only Three things: A TR 1 Remake, A TR1 and 2 remake(A Comliation if the two are put together), or All The TR's best levels!
I believe the last is the least likely because, one which TR games and levels are you going to get is this including AOD or not it would be weird! Two, Toby GArd left the series because of the direction of Tomb Raider, I don't see them release levels from no more than the first three, in this case you might as well make just TR 1 to go through the trouble of having levels from only the first Three! Three, I don't know for sure we would have to ask him, but I think he was okay with the second game, but the third and so on was leading lara in the wrong direction according to him! Four, 5 games and only a compliation, maybe not who wants to only play three levels from each of the games! Last But not least isn't CD trying to disregard at least the down fall of lara crofts history, most critics say TR3-6, wouldn't they not even want to revist games that according to alot made the down fall of Tomb Raider? Yeah I think so, When you release a 10th anniversary Edition don't you want happy cries not mad cries! So releasing only the First two games would be a happy cries game and remember the old times, to many releasing levels from all the games would be a mad cry,like getting your dad a picture of your mom cheat on him with his client for their 25 wedding anniversary, I think not! Releasing atleast only the first two games maybe the third would be good all around especially for critics, to release levels from all the games would be a bad compliment and would out rage many including those that thought the later games are too hard and bland!
Crystal I think you are, but still, Stick to the first Two games and release a full version of either both or one! Doing anything else according to a fortune cookie would be a bad idea!

Well I have to say, if it is a remake it certainly makes me happy, to be able to play all those classic TR moments with new graphics, WOW!!

Ok, back to TR, just to think TR1 and 2 with the TRL engine.... eh, eh, ok, you know what I mean.
What is it about TR that just doesnīt let me go, also the great wall in China was a great level, this is something I missed In TRL a lot, and I like TRL!! those levels when you know you have to go one way but you look around and you see an opening on the mountain, and think, "um what is in there" but it was not easy to find a way to actually get there, you had to try several paths untill you got to that opening and a secret was waiting, this moments I miss A LOT!
Theres a long time I dont play TR1 and 2, now I feel like it, but if the anniversary is a remake, I prefer to wait, there are a lot of moments that have been forgotten over the years.

I would love to see the first two TR games remade! We know the first one is for certain but I've only heard online rumours about a TR2 remake. TR2 would look stunning, imagine Venice, The Monastery, Maria Doria, The Great Wall of China ect...:jmp: I'm very excited about the anniverary edition of TR but if there were also a TR2 remake included, gaming heaven!:D It would be a dream realised!:jmp:

That level was one of my favorites. It was awesome to play and so creative. CD can get a lession on what "massive" and "mood" means by playing this level.
Im so happy to hear that TRbeth, do you guys remember the beginning of that level? if I recall well, it begins with lara deep inside the ocean, in the dark, and you start swimming about, trying to find where to go, your air is almost gone, and finally you see the wreck, when you start swimming to it, a huge white shark crosses your way...

I was so scared...like I didn't even know where to swim, died many times, and tried to avoid the sharks - harpoon would take to long so then I found a hole to swim in and AIYA they're still chasin' me!! whenever sea creatures chases me, I always get so panicked and want to get out of the water badly and kill'em off!!! *SHUDDERS* it's so hard to replay that!!:D

i saw poseidon 2night i really enjoyed the film and reminded me of tomb raider 2 levels
thanks for that link above about the real facts of where these levels were based one when i looked up poseidon it also linked to this ship nice connection
i love ships as it interest me about their storys at sea and also shipwreck, poseidon film was good but not as good as titanic hehe

my question is in tr2 you go to the temple under xian, in real life xian is were they found the terricota army, do you see this in the remake for them to take you out! i know there is the room where they are statues!
apayo, the level you describe under the water with the shark chasing Lara, is 40 Fathoms. The Wreck level follows this level. And here is a suburb example of one level leading right into the other levels in a cohesive way [something that CD didn't do making the game seem really short with unrelated levels].
