The same question was asked in another forum, and the results were a tad surprising. It has me all curious so I bring it here:

What qualities in a fighting game will appeal to both guys and girls? Specifically what do you like to see as far as character design abilities etc.

For me personally, its all down to abilities;Character astetics come second. I'll use one of my fav. fighting game oul Calibur 3 as an example.

Give the Trailer a watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHmd1LyKfXY&search=Soul%20Calibur%203

My personal favs. from Soul Calibur 3 include Nightmare, Ivy, Siegfried (the only girly boy that can truly fight Lol! Then again, he and Nightmare were one once), Cerventes and Mitsurugi. Nightmare and Siegfried are your "No way you can lose" characters. Their Heavy Zewihanders give you the distance and the damage and they ae suprisingly quick for being who carry swords of that heft.

Cervetes and Ivy... well lets just say Power and Skill runs in the family Lol! Ivy deals heavy damage with her "Snake Sword" and Cerventes just eats anyone alive (quick or powerful.)

As you can see, Nightmare has to be one of the most fearful fighting game characters of all time:

http://ada69.blog.jeuxvideo.com/images/mn/1124838577.jpg

Just... Look at him Lol! He got even more powerful once he got detached from Seigfried.

Ivy, welll... most people don't like her in the way she dresses:

(too much like a dominatrix.) However, they really underestimate her in vs. battles.

http://www.soulcalibur3.us/soulcalibur3/costumes/ivy1.png

Cerventes... well, stopping this man and his combos with his two swords is next to impossible (I usually counter him with Nightmare.)

Now, I'll leave the floor open to you guys. Discuss away.

Hey, you forgot Taki and Setsuka! They rule!

I annihilate anyone when I'm using them.

"Demon begone!" *Taki slashes enemy, rolls and kicks on floor, charges forward with four slashes, does a back kick followed by two vertical strikes from below, kicks enemy three times to the head doing a KO or Ring Out. :D

What can i say?
I rule. :D :D :D

Me surprised you didn't take Tira Lol! There is just something about her. My babe likes Setsuka a lot.

It had me chuckling: "Hidden sword in Umbrella; Wonder who else would keep such a thing :whi:."

Easier to get a ring out with Nightmare and Seigfried's back Slash combo ;). It just send em flying in the air.

Soul Calibur 2 Xbox version ha Spawn in it. He was truly amazing.

I think in a fighting game in my opinion anyway... The characters need some sort of sexual appeal... thats what attract me to choosing to play them over any other character.
Also they have to be different, all this normal style of fighting is simply boring. I think young fighters also appeal much more, than say and old man who's always p*****, no comment *cough* Virtual Fighter*and this being with both appeal to Guys and Girls.

The fact of the matter is... i think in many cases whether female of male, the player will always opt to choose a gaming character who is quick, different and has some attractiveness.

This is not the case with all games however... such as 'Mortal Kombat' where Scorpian was my favourite, and his face is covered up. Still the character was different and had unique techniques.

LOL CerebralAssassin, nice use of the words :D

Anyway, if I'm getting this right - you want to know why I pick Character Number 1 as my favourite as opposed to Character Number 2?

And if I am right, I'm using my favourite fighting game series for this: Tekken

My 3 favourite fighters are: Nina Williams, Ling Xiayou and Michelle/Julia Chang. Why? They're quick and can deal pretty powerful blows when used correctly. It helps that they're attractive tho'. But these women are goddesses when I use them. The men have nothing on them :D

Soul Calibur III- One for the laydeez. The charatcer creation mode speaks for itself. ;)
Tekken 5- One for them both. Guys enjoy kicking everyone's asses while the laydeez can toy with the fighter's outfits to their hearts content.
KOF- One for the guys. The boobs jiggle like in a earthquake! :cln:

I enjoy Tekken... it was the first '3D' fighter I played, and since they're all much of a muchness, I stuck with Tekken :tmb: My fave fighters include Ling Xiaoyu, Kunimitsu and Hwoarang.

I do find it funny that people think the female characters have been designed specifically to attract a male audience. I'm a married woman, and yet I absolutely love the female designs for these games, and I take a lot of influence from them in my own artwork. I love designing strong, attractive, curvy female characters, and I certainly don't do it to garner a male audience - I do it ti please myself.

Guess that makes me a bit odd!! :D

I feel the same,so I'm a bit odd, too, lol! It's a bit sad those strong female characters were designed to attract males, and not to attract players who like interesting characters, do not regarding their sex! Those characters like Siegfried, etc, were also designed to motivate male players,so I wonder what's the industry thinks is supposed to attract us in a game!

I think the good thing about fighting games is that there is usually a wide selection of combatants and characters to choose from. Therefore, anyone can pick and choose their favourite characters based on whatever they like.
My favourite fighting games are Tekken and Soul Calibur...
On Tekken, whenever I play with my friends, we usually go for a random team battle - so we have no idea who'll turn up. In these battles, we may play with characters we would have never touched due to one reason or another. And this was where I discovered that I was really annoying with Jack-5, and my friend was a slimy bugger with Christie!
(I'm a lad, by the way)

Well, it's like all this rubbish about Lara and how she only appeals to male gamers - absolute tosh! Why can't women be potrayed as both sexy and as strong as hell? I mean, the likes of Nina from Tekken may have a fantasy bod, but considering she can (and probably would!) punch your voice box out the back of your head, she comes across as an ideal female rolemodel for me! :D

That's why I love female assassin/mercanary-like characters - and why, sometimes, they have an advatange over males - seduction! A quick flash of the thigh and a male adversary is defeated, without even attempting to bring guns or knives into the equation!

This will be a difficult one to answer.

I ususally pick fast/quick characters, male or female. Or a burnette female... :o Hey, I'm partial to 'em. :)

In Final Fight I always used Guy. A fast male 'Ninja'.
In Killer Instinct (I & II) I mostly used Orchid, or I'd use Jago.
Street Fighter II - Ryu. Street Fighter III - Ryu, Ibuki (female Ninja).
Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Ryu, Guy.
Samurai Shodown (Series) - Hoahmaru, Hanzo, Nakoruru.
X-Men: Children of the Atom - Gouki/Akuma. But before I knew how to select that secret character I'd always use Psylocke. A very (pretty) character to play with and watch ^_^. Cyclops was good to use too. But nothing like Akuma.
Soul Calibur - Taki.

Taki appeals to me because of her abilities/moves. She's easy on the eyes too.:D Although in SC I think her costume could've been designed a little better. Like more details... stuff on the lower part of her 'costume'. It's like she's just wearing plain blue (or red) tights.

Now this just sounds like which characters I like to use in any fighting game. Sounds like a good topic to start somewhere else...

I'm off! *whoooosh!!!* :cln:

Yeah when you think about it, there wasn't much thought put up in her constume. You have to try gaining ulternative costumes to see greater detail :). Also, there is the new character creation concept in SC3. Love it!

Lol! And here he goes off gathering his Ninjas from his clan :p.

Well, Hwoarang for his kick-ass combos :D

In Mortal Kombat I always play with Noob Saibot, because he's the coolest ninja and he can teleport himself :p

I don't know really, there's no specific thing about a character or a game that makes it special, it's the overall package :)

Dunno why. Personal reasons, I guess. My father lived in Japan for a few years... :D But Judo looks boring! Karate is "blocky"...

I was beggining to think that I was the only one that played MK XD

Well in MK I usually go for the girls... because I'm a girl. Don't ask why XD I usually play with Sindel or Kitana or even Jade because those were my choices when I was a kid playing in Mega Drive :D guess it brings back memories :)

As for Street Fighter II in GBA... Chun-Li all the way :D her super fast kicks or whatever they're called, very nice and no work at all :p

I too am a "Tekken-head". I am always Nina Williams (I hope am a bit like her...), and in the Arcade here I always fight against...Nina Williams!:jmp:
