View Full Version : TR1 and I .....

.....simply don't see eye to eye:
After finishing "Legend" I felt like playing good, old TR1 again and installed it (with TRinstaller, VDM Sound, dgVoodoo and disabled dgVoodoo VDD Mode because of my ATI card). I started the game by double clicking Disable VDD Mode and the Glide icon, but did not leave the window open (please don't ask why - I guess I did not read the instructions properly). FMV and sound were a bit affected by interference to start with, but as soon as the game itself started everything seemed to be fine. But then I noticed that Lara was actually not only running, but speeding along and sometimes she moved out of her own accord, even though I was not pressing the corresponding keys (eg. she kept running forward when I wanted her to go left or she kept jumping up and down. It reminded me a bit of "Legend" where in the beginning you had to change the settings).
I exited the game to follow the instructions: The game is running too fast.
If your game runs too fast right click on tomb.vlp, go to Properties, switch to VDMSound tab, click Advanced button, switch to Performance tab and move the CPU usage slider to the right.

But where is my tomb.vlp ?

And I cannot dismiss the Server Process by clicking on the Close button, because I have not got said button anymore - I closed that window :o .
Now if I start the game again the graphics are nowhere as good as before.

Someone, please, have mercy with me and give me some advice. :o

Hello Gabi! :)

After doubleclicking Disable VDD mode, you get the message that 'you now can run DOS applications'. That is supposed to remain opened. If you closed it by accident, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Windows Taskmanager, tab 'Processes', select the process dgvoodoo.exe, rightclick on it and end this process.
Now you can relaunch the game.

To edit the .vlp file read this (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=364126&postcount=3). :)

If Lara moves without your control, make sure no electricel devices that could cause interference are close to the computer, like a mobile phone, or speaker too close to the PC, also make sure that no unused gamepad is connected to the PC, and when it is unplugged don't even park it close to the PC.

Thank you Joseph,

but I almost wish I had not started the whole thing  .

I have now closed the Server process via the task manager. So that is one thing solved.
But when I relaunch the game, the FMV (or is it a cutscene?) where Lara and her guide are seen in the snowy mountains starts to get very erratic at the point where the wolves turn up. Sound and picture are "hanging" for seconds (sometimes it looks like a screenshot) and when the game finally starts.........well, it doesn't, it crashes back to the desktop. And there the little Disable VDD Mode window has disappeared even though I did not close it, so I have to close the Server process via the task manager again.

Next problem: I don't seem to have a tomb.vlp or an uninstall option:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/Gabicats/TR1.jpg
at least I do not recognise it.
So I can't even uninstall the game and start from scratch.

Any ideas, please :( :wve:

I don't want to hijack your thread but I'm having some problems aswell with the game...

when i don't use the 'disable vdd mode' program FMV's work but with a very annoying BRRR through FMV's and talk when in Lara's House.

when i do enable 'disable dvvd mode' I have beter graphics etc but FMV's don't work (I already changed soundblaster from 16 to 2.0). Sounds in lara's house are then alright though.

Gabi, then i think you should also have killed the process 'ntvdm.exe' in Taskmanager, before you relaunch the game again.
Anyway, simplest is to just reboot the PC.

The .vlp file to edit, is the one on your desktop ("Tomb Raider - Glide"), not the one in TOMBRAID.

Kapitein Iglo, if you have onboard soundchip (instead of a real audiocard), you could try disable hardware acceleration.
Start > Run... type in
dxdiag
On the "Sound" tab, move the slider to the left for no hardware acceleration.

I assume you have:
-updated graphic- and sounddrivers.
-the TR1 cd in the first player (with the lowest drive letter: "D" is lower than "E")

Joseph, I love you!!!! :D
Rebooting did the trick and I managed to alter the "speed" as well by moving the CPU usage slider to the right.
(Btw. I did not have a 'ntvdm.exe', but that does - hopefully - not matter now).

Thank you

 Gabi.
So you moved the slider instead of editing the .vlp file on your desktop (which is much easier and more precise)? The "Tomb Raider (Glide)" icon, following this instruction (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=364126&postcount=3).

http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/images/installati.gif

Anyway, you're helped, enjoy the game! :)

I'll have a look tomorrow. I actually made a dual boot between xp64 bit (which I use as standard) and Xp32 just because I want to replay the Tomb Raider series. :P

I indeed have an onboard soundchip (nforce 3) and I did put the game in the D: drive so I'll have a look if that works. Thank you for the reply anyway. ;)

Yes, dear, I dared doing that!!!! Against your instructions!!!!

But it was purely by chance. Exploring the .vlp file I suddenly came across the slider and thought I might try it. And it worked. :D

But since I am a good girl and usually do as I am told, I used the "proper" method mentioned by you and set it to 71 by editing the file later on.
So all is well.

Thanks again

One more question, please: How do I change the gamma settings for TR1?
I do remember that for one of the custom levels there was a setting in the ATI catalyst control centre that changed it only in the game and left everything else (eg. desktop) as it was.
But I cannot seem to find that option. When I change "Full Screen 3D" the game stays dark and my desktop goes brighter.

Any hints will be greatly appreciated (as atm I don't see where Lara is going :D ).

Thank you :wve:

In the TOMBRAID folder find the program dgVoodooSetup and click on 'DOS' then GLIDE and find a slider bar for the gamma options - also try enabling 'Use Glide Gammaramp' as well for better visibilty in dark areas in the game.

EDIT: Find the setup program in this screenshot:

And the Gamma option is here for example:

I knew it was too good to be true :( .
I have got past the cutscene with Larson at the end of Tomb of Qualopec, get the FMV of St. Francis' Folly but then when the level is supposed to start, the game crashes back to desktop and again the little Disable VDD Mode window has disappeared, so that I have to close it via the task manager.

Any ideas what I could do about that, please?

Hi Gabi. In your settings, i see that you have enabled "Force W-Buffering". Could you uncheck that please.
Reboot the PC, and try again. :)

Joseph,

sorry I did not get back earlier, but I have not been around.
The settings you refer to are not mine, but Jason Davies'.

Mine are as follows:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/Gabicats/Dgvoodo1.jpg

As you can see, I do not even have a "Force W-Buffering" option (unless it is hidden somewhere).
So what can I do?

Joseph

Oops sorry Gabi i didn't notice it was not your picture. :o

Try this:
change Refresh Rate to: Set by the application (may flicker).

Gabi
16-07-06, 22:47
Thank you  (and so far it does not flicker :D .)

Joseph
16-07-06, 23:23
I hope it stays that way; on my PC 'set by the application' works best. Enjoy the game!

No savegame corruption(s) yet? I know you have an AMD cpu, so more people are curious about that. Please let us know. :)

Hi Joseph,

so far - so good, no savegame corruptions yet :D . I am at St. Francis' Folly and have saved about 90 times (:o - just in case).

Hi, Gabi :wve: If you ever manage to move to Intel (don't do it :D) then see

Hi Joseph,
well I managed to get to the end of "Tomb of Tihocan" but after the cutscene the same happened again: game crashes back to desktop and the little Disable VDD Mode window has disappeared, so that I have to close it via the task manager.

Any other settings that I should change???

Joseph

First test if it could be just a 'random accident' (overheat or whatever), by rebooting and playing on from the last savegame. :)

Also close any running programs if any. One of them could be interfering with your game. Just a thought.

Gabi

I tried again today and this time it took me to CITY OF KHAMOON straight after the cutscene. :D

Thank you both :wve:

Must have been just a random glitch that happens now and then for unclear reason on any pc, solved by a reboot.
Enjoy gaming Gabi. :)
Btw nice new avatar. :tmb:

Here we go again........... .

I have made it to the end of "Sanctuary of the Scion". I can see the FMV that follows right to the end (Lara jumping off the boat into the water) and then I am back to desktop (instaed of Natla's Mines). Rebooting and changing the refresh rate showed no results. What else can i do?

Joseph
13-08-06, 23:53
Are the DgVoodoo settings still the same as in your screenshot above?

Have you made a savegame just before that point? Or do you have to replay a big deal of the level?

Gabi
14-08-06, 18:15
Hi Joseph,

the settings still are the same as in the screenshot above, except for the refresh rate which I changed to "set by the application (may flicker)" after you told me to do so.
And yes, I do have a save game just before Lara takes the scion off the pedestal.

Edit: :o Hrmmmm............the problem is solved. By mistake I started the game without disabling VDD mode and that did the trick. I was able to start "Natla's mines" where I saved straight away. I then started the game again after disabling VDD mode and all seems well. Lara is swimming about quite happily :D .

Joseph

Ok.
Try this:
Now, under Resolution (located next to Texture mem size) and Refresh rate, set the same values as you have on your monitor (desktop).
That's what i have. :)

Gabi

They are set to 1024X768 anyway (that is my desktop resolution).

But as I said, the problem seems to be solved (the question is: for how long :p ).

Thank you :wve:

Joseph

Oh, you said it is solved in your EDIT!!! :D

Have a good gaming Gabi.
