Sony's PlayStation 3 will play almost every PlayStation game, a senior IBM staffer has claimed. It's not clear how many PSOne titles won't play, but according to Tom Reeves, VP of semiconductor and technology services at IBM, even 40 of them was too high a number for Sony.
In an Electronic News interview, Reeves said: "Sony is very concerned about quality and backward compatibility. They want to get this right. They tested game after game after game. When there were about 40 PlayStation 1 games that didn’t work properly, that didn’t pass their criteria for quality."
Sony's PlayStation chief, Ken Kutaragi, first promised the PS3 would play PlayStation and PS2 games back in September 2003. However, how well the next-generation console will do so and across how many titles has always been open to question, especially once Microsoft shipped its Xbox 360 console, which still plays only a sub-set of original Xbox titles, using emulation software.
As of June 2006, the 360 will play only 227 Xbox games, though ongoing updates to the emulation code regularly add more to the list.

Ahhh that's good then.... Hopefully Tomb Raider will be one of the many which do play on Ps3 :)
oh well i suppose its a brill idea and adds more replay value but its only a desperate attempt to gain more buyers.

I should've waited for the PS3 and skipped PS2. :( Oh well.

"a desperate attempt to gain more buyers"???? don't think so MATE!!!
the PS2 was backward compatable long before PS3 and xbox 360.......seems to me looking at the timescale, it is indeed a desperate attempt by Microsoft to get NEW buyers
and to think people accuse Sony of stealing idea's
meh meh meh!!!!
Certainly not a 'desperate attempt' but logical sense. How many PS1 & PS2 games are in existance? I don't know, but it must range in the thousands. Sony is smart to not alienate their fan base.
The PS2 won't play all PS1 games, I suppose the PS3 will be no different. I'm looking forward to owning one. I now have a TV capable of HD, so bring it on!

Great news! The 360's backwards compatibility is rubbish and does not get updated as much as it should.

being fair :jmp: as already pointed out by someone, backward compatability is the way to go, it means people don't have to sell their favourite games, knowing the new machine will play them
but some games will work and some won't sadly..........

Oh w00tness. :jmp:
Rumor has it that Sony includes a full PS2 chipset in the first few versions of the PS3 because the software emulation is not ready yet. Which means that they're gonna loose a lot of money on this feature. So nice for customers, but bad for Sony.
Wonder how the save system will work. What memory cards will have to be used, as with PSOne game to PS2?

now that is a very intresting point
the PS3 doen't appear to support the traditional memory cards?????

i had heard that if you want to play a ps1/2 game on the ps3, youd have to start over cause it wont use memory cards or something, which sucks, but at least you can still play the games.
Some guy working for Microsoft explained the 360's lack of backwards compatibility by saying that "nobody cares about that", which was a really stupid thing to say.
