View Full Version : Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett dies

11-07-06, 19:07

Pink Floyd's founding member Syd Barrett has died aged 60. He was the band's first creative force.

Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd and considered by many to be one of the most influential musicians in rock'n'roll history.

He is understood to have died at his home in Cambridge at the age of 60 last Friday, July 7, after succumbing to complications related to diabetes.

Barrett retreated from public life and music culture in the early 1970s, after leaving Pink Floyd as his mental health disintegrated in the apparent aftermath of heavy LSD use during the '60s.

His legacy can be heard on the seminal and acclaimed early recordings of Pink Floyd, such as "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", and his solo material such as "The Madcap Laughs".

its such ashame when a member of such a great band dies at a relativly young age, i still see 60 as a young age to die with the healthcare and all that. i hope the band remember him

As a founding member of one of my all-time favourite bands, this is very sad news.

Much respect......

Sad. But this will happen more and more to people from that era now as now they get older.

Incredible talent and insight when he was in his heyday (mid 1960's). I have all the Pink Floyd music, and Syd was obviously a major influence on the direction PF took after he left. I am sad that he died, I am also sad that he chose to ruin his mind with drugs.

That being said, the world would have suffered quite a loss if David Gilmour had never had the chance to display his talents and grow with Pink Floyd.

I've seen the band twice, the Delicate sound of thunder and The division bell concerts. The division bell concert still to this day is the loudest concert I have ever heard in my life. I was in the stage center of the 11th row!

Shine on Syd.

As a big Pink Floyd fan I was stunned to hear this. Pure musical genius, he'll be dearly missed.
"I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house I don't know why I call him Gerald. He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse." from "Bike" (that was the first song that came into my head when posting this)
