In previous TR's, we've seen SOME weather. Rain, clouds, even snow. But I think future TR's should bump it up a notch and make the weather change throughout the levels. Perhaps when you first arrive at a location, it'll be sunny. Then clouds would roll in and it could storm.

I think it'd boost the feeling of atmosphere sky-high. I started thinking about this by seeing Rivendell's post in the thread talking about time in TR (starting off at daytime, changing to night or vice versa). The weathering could add challenge plus make the levels look twice as cool.

What do you guys think?

YEAH! Something like that happens in GTA where it's constantly changing, great!:D

Not really... Other places have weather changes too. Mostly rain, probably fog as well.

Maybe she has to hurry in jungle levels before everything gets too muddy and she sinks in it. Or maybe it just slows her down, she can't jump as high because her feet keep getting stuck... ;)

Or snow level has an avalanche! She has to ride it out or find a way to stop herself before it all goes off a cliff!

Any rainforest type setting would probably have sudden weather changes like that.

It's a nice idea, but I rather have them focusing on making the levels long and challenging.

and how about some of this

http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/sport009.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

as her last-chance grab when she sails off the cliff...

How about an earthquake ripping a hole in the tomb, leaving the way out cut-off, forcing you into the chasm-like-abyss that beckons you deeper. Then some real time flooding and a race against time to escape, or perish forever!! Mwahahahahttp://www.freesmileys.org/emo/devil02.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

The only mistake CD could make there would be having an interactive cutscene... Those were annoying, and they'd probably add one in if there was an avalanche or something.

best idea for any game is to include some decent weather. especially when it makes jumping harder and that, more chance of your falling when its raining and fog would be fun, without autogrip

I DO NOT like this idea at all. And the levels are WAY too short for the weather to change a lot. :p

Or you are in a swamp and a real dense fog starts to roll in. Things get murkier and murkier and then off in the distance you hear a noise. And it is getting louder but you can't see anything.

And the camera should get wet too when it rains ,and perhaps If it's raining in a warm climate the camera could fog up a little, hehe.

GReat Idea, especially I would like big gusts of wind to come or say she goes into the wilderness and there is a snow storm but it becomes worse and worse until its a full out blizzard maybe you have to wait it out! OF course for this to really work and take advantage of gameplay! Tomb raider would have to be laid out into hub areas instead of invidual levels for example Jak 3 every now and then it rains and dust storms come up so something like that would be cool! So maybe a tomb raider game with up to 2-3 or three hub areas with up to 7-10 hours per area or region you can explore within the hubs to take full advantage of both weather and time features! I would love to see volcanoes exploding like Kilewa( sorry miss spell) in Hawaii, small tremors, dust storms, blizzards, dust devils, small tornadoes, rain storms, hail storms, the possiblilities are endless! Except keep two things in mind, the weather would have to be exactly like it would be in the real place! So no snow storms in egypt. and depending on the time lara vists so of course if lara visted the American southwest during Summer there would be minor monsoons, and not snow storms! I personally would also like a extra feature after you beat the game to play in any weather type even if its wrong for the region. Also I would like to see foliage to change color, for example every time lara vists or goes to a forest or jungle its always during the nice time of the year not the monsoons are whatever!

It's a fine idea. I like the idea of fog (as long as it's not overdone). But time of day was mentioned in some other post. I think it would be great to come out of a long tomb level just in time to see the sun go down - or coming up. The long shadows, the orange cast to everything. That would be dramatic!

i think it's a nice idea... but it may take up to much unneccesary memory. i honestly don't want lara to be outside that much :p i want it like in the original: dark and claustrophobic tombs. all this bright and sunny outside crap is getting boring... give us a TOMB... its TOMB RAIDER!!! NOT JUNGLE RAIDER or SUNSHINE RAIDER!!! its TOMB RAIDER. it cannot be that difficult to give us the claustrophobic and scary feeling of being trapped :jmp:

CD, stop with that sun!! I hate sun. I want storms, electrical storms, clouds, clouds, rain, snow, blizzard. I want something thrilling and awesome. Some amazing sky effects. I want sunrise, moon night (in the jungle :)), sunset, fog, aurora borealis... I wantdramatic stuff!!! :)

i think every level should have its own weather and stick with it for the entire duration or just change maybe once. this way every level can have its own distinct feeling and atmosphere and it would be more memorable.

I love the TR3 Gold weather. Just amazing. Especially the first two and last 2 levels. ANd outside doesn't really means sun - I hate sun too. I just want more dramatic weather.

That would work for me. I like seeing details like that, but the gameplay must also be good

I hope it's not asking for too much in wanting details in even the weather, though this is a nice idea. I liked what someone else said though too, about worrying more about the atmosphere inside the tombs, like in previous games. I think Core was good at that. Really. And reminds me of some other good point that someone made in another thread, about how in the first games, there were periods of silence, right? as in no music and no one talking over a headset either. I actually liked that a lot, come to think of it. Especially at times when we could only hear Lara's footsteps or something, kind of makes it creepier. But for when she's outside, yes, please, less and less sunshine. I hate it. :P Stuff like rain and the fog someone brought up would be really great, imo. :) But good on the gameplay as well. I guess they have a lot to do for this next game. :)

Not only should the weather change during each level - it should effect gameplay. Rain, snow and high winds could effect the environment to block/open up pathways for Lara. See where I'm going with this?

Rivers with burst banks, dried up rivers, currents, tombs exposed after a sandstorm, landslides etc, etc, etc...

The possibilities are endless.

anyway i would just hate GTA weather changing,.. i mean,.. if they want some interactive weather i cannot be as fast as in gta,.. i mean gta is supposssed to be in a long period,. but tomb raider is not,.. so,. if its in a jungle,.. tr3 was perfect,.. had rain some times, and wind,.. it was just as humid and foggy, and dark in some places at the same time,.. had a lot of sun, and a lot of darkness jungle level is the one to have in mind,.. some snow could be nice too,.. but do not make goes from night to daylight in one level,.. like in venice,.. first level was daylight- mornings,.. bartolis hideout was more like afternoon,. and opera house was night time,... hat was a intelligent way to change weather... and if they can they could add some rain from time to time,.. and some sun or clouds like inTR4,... also and talking now about interactiveness,.. well if it raining to much, she could have the mud avalanch thing,.. so she must do something fast before the mud covers everything,... like in tr2, with the rocks going after her, and the tr3 marshes in jungle levels

also woulb interesting if ever you have to play in winter with everything frozzen and in spring with newly discovered caves under the prozzen lake she just went on winter.... so,.. new paths added

Weather changing is fine, but not something which should be taken too seriously. After all, it is only weather. But the weather effecting gameplay doesn't sound too good. It's no good waiting for it to rain or something so you can carry on progressing through the game...

Hey !it doesn't rain all the time here i mean summer we had a warning that there was a drought ...going off the point here...any way i think that would be such a good idea for changing weather ...much more natural !...what was with legend with england raining ALL the time it freaked me out i must be living on another country called england if its the same ...going off the point again

Maybe... I kinda like the weather idea, but overall I like the sunny enviroments. Maybe some (rare) rain occurences. Definately, some snow. A monsoon. We could see trees almost blowing completely over!

I'm not too excited with that idea. I would prefer weather related effects to remain the same.

Catlantean
28-11-06, 20:10
Depends on how long the levels are. If you're going to hang around a level for a couple of hours (think AOD's Parisian Ghetto), it would be reasonable to see a change in the time of day and maybe some weather effects. But if the levels are short (under one hour), they should just stick with one weather.

Weather, as so many other things, are part of the mood of the level. In other words, that means I`d rather have the weather stay somewhat the same.
