View Full Version : Hard to get secret?
Im not sure what the levels called but its one of the early ones in tomb raider 1 where u walk thru the door into a wide long corridor at the beginning. Theres pillars that you have to climb 1 to the other to reach the top and a box that you have to drag onto touch pads to open the doors. Theres lions and monkeys (behind the bottom touch pad door) at the bottom. Now when u get to the top you go into the 2nd touchpad door turn to the left and fall down a long slope. As u drop off the end you can see a ledge opposite with an opening, the secret is in there and ill be dammed if after 8 years of playing this level ive ever managed to grab the ledge. Ive tried everything jumping all the way down and one last leap of faith at various times, sliding backwards pulling up and back flip. Nothing works for me. How do you grab the ledge? Anyone ever done it? :hea:
This is the only secret i havent found in this game, but i know its there.
Slo..........
I think tihs is St. Francis' Folly.
This secret is quite hard to do, i've done it once.
But I can't remember how to do it.
Yes, it is St Francis' Folly. And yes, it is a nightmare to get! I only got it by trial and error, I'm afraid... to this day, the beginning of that level annoys me, because I ended up re-loading it about 20 times before I timed the slide right!

Tell me about it, its so annoying cos it takes like 10 minutes to get to that point if u do all the puzzles and then miss the ledge and its reload time yet again lol. Someone must know the technique to get it easily.:mis:

i've never been able to get it niether has my dad.
Come on core you got a lot to answer for. Was this secret made to be gotten only by sheer fluke or by glitch? I fear many a playstation had its life ended trying to get this secret lol i know i got pretty frustrated on the odd occasion :D

Ive never had any trouble getting that secret...
As you slide down the first slope, JUMP. You'll then jump over the end of the first ramp, and onto the smaller ramp below. Then as soon as you land on this, simply jump and grab.
There is NO way to reach the secret if you jumpof the longer first ramp, you must land on the smaller one below then jump from there !!
:yah:
I gathered this and tried numerous times to do this. Can u just fall onto the 2nd slope or do u have to jump onto it? Everytime i JUST miss the bloomin ledge lol
Isn't that the supposedly unobtainable secret that Core put in every TR game? Apparently you can get it via corner bug or something...
l actually forgot all about that secret when l played the game on the PC for the first time(played the game several times on the PS1 years ago). When l was down the bottom and looked up saw the smaller slope l remembered it, who could forget bouncing down that slope 20 odd times, luckily l had a save game at the top before sliding down. No you cannot just drop onto the ledge from the top slope, you must jump onto it and then jump of the smaller one just before the edge otherwise she will still not make it. l think the jump is about 4 steps back, but it has been a while since l did it, l usually just jump all the way down the slope, and yes frequently miss it
I agree with fondantcookie. That is the 2nd secret right? Quite an easy one (as I remembered) the 1st one is almost impossible to get.

You haveto jump onto the second lower small slope, then jump and grab the ledge...
Its fairly difficult, but youll get the hang of it...
Just time your jump off the big slope so that you land just on the smaller ledge, then quickly jump...
Good Luck

2nd secret? Im not sure aint played it for a while but its just this certain 1 i was never able to get to, i found every other 1 without too much trouble or thinking about :D
Thanks for the info aussie500 and fondantcookie, im pretty sure i made it onto the smaller slope and jumped across b4 but never made it. You must have to jump right on the very end of the smaller slope.
Isn't that the supposedly unobtainable secret that Core put in every TR game?
Core puts unreachable medipacks in all games (at least the three first TR's: one in Palace Midas reachable via the corner bug, one in Temple of Xian, and one in Coastal Village if my memory serves me well), but all secrets can be reached in all games.

I think it is possible to do it by sliding down the long slope backwards. Then grab the edge at the bottom of the slope to hang before dropping onto the smaller slope and back-flipping into the secret doorway. This cuts out the difficult timing of the jump to the smaller slope if you're going down forwards.
But the timing of the back-flip as you're sliding downthe smaller one is critical. It needs to be just before the bottom but not right at the bottom. If you try the grab/pull up/backflip technique at the bottom of the smaller slope (a method you would think might work) it doesn't.
I know it is possible to get in the doorway without a grab ie. a straight jump. I think that maybe the swan dive might work but I really can't remember exactly how I did it.
By coincidence, I've been replaying Tomb Raider after completing legend. I was wondering if I had rose coloured glasses on while remembering how much better the original was. The original still beats legend, hands down, in spite of the obviously dated graphics.
Anyway, I have just finished St Fnancis's Folly and, although it took a few attempts, I found a repeatable way to get the secret at the bottom of the long slope. You have to slide down the slope forwards, taking note of the vertical stripes on the walls. Aim to time your launch half-way between the last 2 stripes and keep the jump button pressed until Lara lands on the lower slope and makes her second leap. Then press and hold action to grab the ledge and pull up to get the secret.
It usually takes me a good 30 tries before I get that secret, but I always get there in the end. I have far more trouble getting the 2nd secret, the one where you have to leap off the bottom of the long slope. The PSX save-game system for TR1 makes the acquiring of this secret a complete nightmare.

thats in palace midas :p

That's a tricky secret to get, but it's possible after a few tries. :)

i have no clue which secret is being talked about  some are mentioning the one in tihocan's tomb... others the one in st.francis folly
anyway.. whichever one it is, i always managed to get all secrets in tr1 :jmp: the only one that had me complaining was the final one in the great pyramid which doesn't register as a secret in the statistics for us pc players :hea:

It is like fallenangle said. I just redid that level yesterday. Don't understand what's the problem? Do you guys realise you have to slide down that slope backwards?
:)
l have never suceeded in getting it going down the slope backwards, l always go forward
It is pretty easy secret to get, once you learn how. I tried everything too and I always considered it the hardest secret in the game. Not anymore. This is how you can get it work almost every time.
1. Slide down backwards.
2. Grab at the end of the slide, then slide down to the extra slide, and grab it too.
3. Now, climb up and immediately when you see Lara in sliding position on her feet, press the jump button. It takes a little practice but once you master it you can't go wrong.
There was a secret? I even didnt knew that lol.:D
I've never reached the secret by going backwards, I did this not that long ago and I'm possitive I had to grad the edge as I jumped off the second slope. I may have jumped too early though...
I got it once and that was it cuz I was lucky. It requires luck to get this one. This is the only hard secret to get. You gotta time it right and you'll succeed but you hefta jump at an exact moment.
