View Full Version : Darren Brown - How Real is Too Real
On a more serious note i was searching through the 1up forums and came across this really interesting thread about games and their evolution in realism. There was also a video about a psycologist doing an experiment bringing games to life through a crazy scheme, I'm sure the whole process was fake but it was entertaining and extremely innovative in it's meaning and process that it got me thinking, what is your stance on realism, how real is too real?
Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjRAcajFte0) on Realistic Game - Watch it too the end, really interesting and creative
Wow that was a great watch! That was crazy how they put him through that then put him back in front of the game like he never even left it... Im not really with making games look to realistic... i think the fun in games is how unrealistic they are... making them seem life like kinda creeps me out...
It would really depend on the genre if it was creepy or better
The video was brilliant but far to unbelievable in my opinion. But when comming to the subject at hand i think Realism plays a crucial role in engaging a player in a game. Now having a controller in your hands is by far a different situation of realism than being "in" the game. I'm not going to really go to deep into being "in" a game because knowing that your playing a game is different from what that video showed, he was being tricked into thing it was all real so i can't comment on it fairly.
As for current games with the means of a controller I'm all for realism. Like previously said i think if your car took a hard hit against a wall from a wrong turn and your vehicle smashed into pieces and you couldn't contrinue driving that would be incredible, it would really test the gamers skills. Now with this added realistic effects and physics could come fustration for older gamers who don't want such harsh consequences for taking a wrong turn and don't want the lap to race just because they hit a wall with their car, I mean after all it is a game. Things like realism should be added but in small doses. Things like no HUB and a limited supply of items in an inventory is one of the best additions of realism to ever grace games, it added a level of strategy that was never seen before. Things like updated physics and and graphics right away add more realism, a great example is the new game comming out for the PS3, MotorStorm. The fact that when you race your car leaves dents and paves it way in the mud affecting the track for the rest of that round is brilliant! Basically by adding realism your adding stragey because the more real things become for a game the mroe challenging things become. Games like Half life force you to use the enviroment when dealing with certain situations, with its added realistic physics engine you can't just pull a switch and things fall into place, your required to take weight and positioning into account when doing some of the activities required to advance in the game.
My stance on realism is a for sure go, i would like nothing more than to see more realistic consequences for the choices a player makes and adding that sense of strategy to a game. Knowing that you can die after only a few shots feels more exciting than a game where you can take a hail storm of metal and keep on running like it was all good because the bar in the top corner says you still live. Maybe something like a limp or slower movement would be a great improvement, impaired eyesight from a characters physical state would be really cool. Realism is the next step in bringing games to a whole new dimension, its currently happening now, slowly but its happening.

is that that Derrin Brown guy? yeah he's good but David Blanes better. waow he pulls some good stunts. it was a shame for him when he did the stunt in london and all the english were taunting him. thats the difference btween english and americans, americans cheer people on, english bring them down. no wonder he did his next stunt in the US.
Aww, poor guy. That wasn't so nice :( He got tricked..
But anyway, I would like to be in a game too..only not about zombies. In TR would be cool.:D
I had a dream. I was in Resident Evil..:cln:

I dont think ALL the english were taunting him...just a few twonks!
Oh and Derren Brown does a lot of psychological stuff....like using mind skills to show how some mediums work etc.
I heard about this, but unfortunately I never did see this particular episode. Very strange. Did he forget what had happened?

ooo - hit a nerve there did i? get a life! english are seen as trouble makers - thats not my fault. its always the english yobs that cause riots and violence over football. and it was more than a few.
Lmao...and you have Grace as an avatar....the BB *****. throwing glasses of water at people...and ably demonstrating the ability to be a twonk...
Dont you get fed up of being classed as a nation of idiots?? After all thats why the world wants to bomb us isnt it??? and sustaining that myth really isn't a good idea at the mo is it?
Even after watching the video again i want to know now more about hypnosis and the effects of flashing lights in certain order and amount of times in a given second. I'm sure it was all fake but still, interesting stuff.
And come on guys, no need to start fighting over something stupid now
Not fighting...just like to see balance...you know...there are prats all over the world...good and bad in all colours and creeds...i don't with to be tarred with same brush as the bad guys....and indeed who would???
There is a book where the possibility of making games sort of real is disscused. The characters just wind up frying their braines and go bezerk after playing too much... I do think it may be possible to go that far, though I get worried...
It's always possible to go to far in any subject, and i worry that some people will try to with gaming too. The possibilities that come along with VR (Virtual Reality) are completely unknown and when VR becomes reality and a new generation of gaming in itself i tend to worry on where it's all headed

you said originally that all the english were taunting him...and then generalized about english and americans...and personally as an english woman who is fed up with the negative vibes our country recieves i felt compelled to say that it wasn't...now....i assume that you are english too...and you must be aware of the current climate of unpopularity that we live in?
People generalize all the time...we are hooligans....we are this, we are that...it would be nice to see something positive for a change!
anyhoo...................your opinion....my opinion......two different things...
:D
i assume that you are english too...
im not english.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...I was guessing by the BB thing...

Taleigha and jackles, that's enough. Drop it.
I'm not convinced about the authenticity of that video, it just seemed too convenient. "Flash, flash, and another flash just about... there." *zonk*. But a very interesting idea.
I think as an American the English people are beautiful and lucky people to live in a country where you don't have to drive on the right side of the road and can wear huge hats and work for the poilice :p
But in all seriousness, i love the english, even if its just for their accent. Never did i find negative vibes but that doesn't negate the fact that you did.
Taleigha and jackles, that's enough. Drop it.

That's what i was saying too, even if it's all fake it was a well put together concept in my opinion.
Taleigha and jackles, that's enough. Drop it.
right then, mum. dont insult us. we had actually finished.
Dont worry I've dropped it anyway...made my point and wooooooooooosh its gone...:D :D
