I've tought about this and it may be true...

Have noticed that the block engine is quite old? It dates back to 1995... So my theory is:

Stop whining... Eido$ will soon release that engine as freeware due to its age and then modders will create old school games again... Does anyone else agrees with me?

Peyn_OTHfan

Isn't that already done with the Leveld Edittor?

not fully... with the full source code you can use the engine plus evrything else that core did... you could alter the main title and do something AoD, do "real" cutscenes, etc...

You mean Open Source. I certainly hope that they release the engine as open source, but so far, I've seen nothing that indicates Eidos has any desire to do so.

I don't think that's gonna happen in the near future... However, there's always the Indiana Jones games and the very promising Naughty Dog for the people who don't want to follow CD with their upcoming TRs.

That Naughty Dog game looks quite promising. I tend to like ND games, so I've got quite high hopes for that one. :)

Like Mona says, it looks more Tomb Raider-ish than anything since TR4.

Everytime I see it, I think that's how Eidos should have taken TR forward. It should be Lara running around hiding behind trees, scrambling over hillocks and leaping across huge chasms.

In Legend, despite detailed graphics, there was ZERO sense of any terrain to be traversed.

I even like the one-on-one combat in ND's trailer. It looks real and exciting.

Bullet time is such superhero nonsensical rubbish for Lara. She should be getting up close and personal with stuff... fighting and examing stuff. She should bend and rub dirt off walls with her hands, searching for writing, hidden holes, switches and clues... not zoom in at distant objects with a RAD device. The whole sense of proportion and perspective of Legend is wrong in my opinion.

Well I sort of disagree, in bolivia you can look at all the rocks and think wow how will I get up there!!!

But then you realise it's only possible one way because she can only climb on what has been programmed as climbeable and sadly she won't climb most surfaces.

It's the little things in that ND trailer that get me - the determined look the main guy gives when he discharges that spent cartridge from the shotgun, the way he keeps his head down when shooting over a bluff, they way the terrain is used for cover in a realistic way (as opposed to utilising gimmicks like bullet time...).

It really does look like something us rather jaded old TR fans might like. :)

It looks real in the right way, in the way that the old TRs used to feel real... As you say, the terrain is used for cover in a realistic way. I can't wait.

And it doesn't hurt any that the guy looks yummy. :D

I'll bet they don't dress him up in useless clothes either.

Awesome link! The naught dog clip is what I wanted legend to be like. Maybe we can mod the hero into lara when the game comes out! :p I love the way he grabbed ledges, kicked in doors, smashed thru windows.... that looks freakin' awesome! :tmb: There is a game I WILL BUY WHEN IT COMES OUT! The combat looked pretty cool too, and yes, wizzing bullets!

One also wonders what TR would look like if it were in the hands of competent developers* who actually listened to what the fans wanted instead of being driven by the general public who seem to have the gaming-attention span of spoons...

*Konami, Core, Capcom etc....in my opinion would get tomb raider right...

No. It was designed for PS2/Pc first. They then decided to make a NG version as well.

Well, LucasArts have the game completed only at 20 %. The release date is "Summer 2007". I suppose that tombs will appear. The game is set in 1939 and Indy will search a judeo-christian relic with a power of byblical proportions; we know that probably he will travel to Estambul, San Francisco's Chinatown and perhaps to The Temple of Salomon.

The plot is under strict secrecy and under the direction of George Lucas for the first time. Lucasarts said in an interview that the game won't consist only in fights (I hope), so we can expect chases, Indy's ingenuity, traps, comedy and all of that.

Indiana Jones 2007 debuts the revolutionary new Euphoria technology from NaturalMotion, which delivers never-before-seen lifelike action and awareness to every character in real time – so you’ll never see the same thing twice.

well I've watched the posted trailers and I guess Theseis, Black Buccaneer and Broken Sword might be of interest to me. That Indiana Jones trailer was 100% fighting action so I'm not too ecstatic about it.
I didn't see any trailer or screenshots of any character exploring a room full of surprises, so I'm not holding my breath. I'm still happier with custom levels.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (XBox) is a great favourite of mine. I think it is still truer in style to old TR gameplay than either AOD or Legend. It is more combat orientated but has plenty of physical challenges, puzzles and exploration alongside which Legend pales in comparison. If you think about it Lara's grapple is really just a feeble and under-used copy of Indiana's whip.

Should Indiana Jones 2007 be anything like Emperor's Tomb I'll be very enthusiastic about it.

Indiana Jones Emporer's Tomb is cool. :D
You can pick up bottles and smash it on the bad guys. You can whip your err..whip and the whip can be used to swing over gapes. Hey wait a minute. That sounds like Lara's grapple ...maybe it's a coincidence. nah, forget it :p

I got stuck in somekind of monastery where the bad guys wear armour and has long bo staff. They're hard to kill.

Indy has been swinging over gaps using his whip in video games since Temple of Doom in '84

He is hardly ripping anyone off.

Slurp, drool - I was just wondering when Indie would make a comeback.

I loved the Emperors Tomb, and was thinking surely there must be another game coming out soon. the Jade dragon collectables, and even the puzzles of Indie had physics in them (fondly remembering the spinning magic pillars, which if rotated in the right sequence, raised the floating platforms to get Indie across to the other side.)

fallenangle
19-08-06, 14:14
Oh yes I was forgetting about that ^ series of puzzles. That level was, perhaps, a little too 'platformy' too be featured in a more real world type of game but spinning those columns in the correct order to raise the platforms: an even more TR type puzzle than most TRs.

If you compared that area with the end of level column jumping in Legend's Nepal you realise just how easy and simplistic most of the physical challenges in Legend actually were.
