I just came across a petition which I think deserves it's fair share of attention basically, to cut a long story short, the Iranian government has sentenced an 18 year old girl to death for stabbing a rapist who attacked her and her neice who were 17 and 15 at the time respectively.

In any western country she would have been acquitted for self defense, but in Iran, there is no such thing as equality for women, and little in the form of Justice. As with many muslim countries - if a woman is raped, she must have deserved it or led the man on. If a woman is not a virgin, she is open to rape as well. The courts have tried to portray her as a loose moraled runaway who stabbed a man for now reason. Worse yet, the law in Iran sets the minimum age for the death penalty at 15 for boys and just 9 years of age for girls!

Please sign and pass this on to other people.

Go here (http://www.petitiononline.com/Nazanin/petition.html) to sign the petition and help make a collectively big differance.

I will sign; Just to show why equality for women usually gets undermined in most Nations that follow sharia law. IMO, there should be an ammendment on that part.

However an online petition doesn't help much. You have to usually write direct letters to the president/leader of the nation himself to require action.

Sadly, it is a harsh truth but the main thing about this petition and my reason for posting it was to get the word out that this sort of thing goes on. Because at the end of the day a problem has to be understood properly before it can be tackled in any way. Saying that I do still hope this petition gets is rightful amount of recognition. The problem is that I don't feel the leader of Iran will listen if I did write to him (not that I even know where to write to...>.<).

Doesn't the UN have a say in humanitarian cases like this anyway?

They do, but remember that you have to take action WITHOUT undermining a country's Sovereignty. As bad as this situation is, no one should make a habit out of forcing a country to do something since it can lead to... other problems (i.e. legalizing forceful invasions.)

My fiancee and I have lobbied quite many times for action and ammendment to some portions of the Sharia law. We were glad that the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia outlawed the parctice of forced marriages here. However, we still have a long way to go.

How can we keep track of the trial? How will we find out if our petition has paid off?

Hopefully president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will comply with UN in this case...if not then it'll be another injustice added to the history books :(. Anyway, on a more positive note, thanks to everyone who's signed and try and pass this information on if you can to enlighten more people about the situation.

Iran are not supposed to execute people under the age of 21 (I think it is), they made a promise to keep to that. Oh, wait a minute, I'm aware of a girl they executed for 'crimes against chastity' (the girl hadn't even done anything). They hung her at 15.

Iran is an abominable country, backward in it's judiciary, forward in it's zealousness and stationary in it's societal development.

I love it when people do that: if a girl gets raped, it's the girl's fault
