I am currently playing through the first Tomb Raider (on the Playstation) for the first time and I'm up to St. Francis' Folly. I've come up to the area where you find the first save crystal of the level and I glance around to find this amazing area with lots of platforms. I don't know about anybody else but from up high I found this area beautiful and detailed very well. The music also helps emphasize what an amazing part of the level this is.
Does anybody else find this part of the game as beautiful as I do?

I don't know about beautiful, but it's certainly one of my favourites. Are you playing it with enhanced graphics?

Nope, just normally on the Playstation.

It looks fantastic with the enhanced graphics. But one thing I do like about playing TR1, on any level, is the silence, when all you can hear are Lara's footsteps padding about the place.

I agree. It really makes you feel like you are in an abandoned tomb and not just playing a game IMO.
I also love it when the music just instantly starts to play when you encounter a massive puzzle or area.

It is weird for me (having played in this order: TRLR, TR3, TR2, TR1, TRC, AOD, TRL.) but I do enjoy the general atmosphere of TR1. It doesn't hold the nostalgia for me, but I get the sense of how it was ahead of it's time and how much detail Core put into it. I think I prefer the background drone though, especially the unearthly moans and scuttles of odd creatures and howling wind. (I'm talking about the one in Temlple of Xian and the Earth area of Lost City of Tinnos. I must say, I fell in love with that part of St. Francis Folly (why is it called that? And oh dear: "fell in love". I sound like Legend Lara in Bolivia!)

it my fave level, but i wish how get the secret, down bottom mean, how i go in time after stand on that pressure pad the go downIt's a lot easier if you use one of Lara's "bug" moves. I made a video of some of them, including getting to the secret here. For the secret, you use Lara's drop back bug. Hop back with action, but release action before Lara grabs the ledge, and Lara moves forwards while falling so she lands on the next ledge or opening below. There is also a drop forwards bug, run Lara towards a hole, and after she starts dropping, press action and Lara will move forwards, landing in front of the perimeter of the hole she dropped down through.

Here is a link to the video, which demonstrates 3 of Lara's bug moves, all done at St Francis Folly:

1. Sidestep over collapsing tile for instant drop and zero damage.
2. Corner bug to get to top of tall column.
3. Drop back bug to get to secret.

I think the whole game is beautiful (and the Unfinished Business levels too), the levels that I think are the most beautiful in TR1 are Obliesk of Khamoon, Collesseum and St. Francis' Folly.

If you are playing it on a PS2 you could turn on Texture smoothing and up the disc speed to shorten load times.

Does anybody else find this part of the game as beautiful as I do?I read in some gaming magazine somewhere, that St. Francis's Folly is considered to be one of the Seven Gaming Wonders of the World.... and I agree. It's construction and atmosphere are perfect.

When I first stood at the top of the folly, I was awed (literally) by the beauty and enormity of the structure... I looked down and felt nervous at the height. I get twinges of vertigo in real life and this simulated that feeling, lol, I kept feeling like I was going to fall off the edge. :D

The different rooms and puzzles based on mythology just added to the atmosphere.

I always feel that a really smart person designed this level with a lot of care.

The Thor's Hammer puzzle strikes me as very funny, as if Lara has suddenly assumed the Wile E. Coyote role in a Roadrunner cartoon (Look out, Lara! No, noooo...).

Well done Funky, on trying out the first game. I wish I could go back and play it with all previous knowledge erased. It really is the coolest game. You have many more beautiful and nasty surprises ahead.
Like Vman said - I still get shivers thinking about some parts of that game.
It is going to be hard to play Legend again after you finish though.

Yep, I find this area in TR I also very beautiful, on my PS1.
I don't like the enhanced graphics at all, because it takes away the atmosphere, TR I wasn't designed for playing with higher end graphics.

I always found it was hard to beat TR1 for always having an ingeneous death just around the corner, the type you just could not forsee :cln:

For instance the giant swords of Damaclese doing in poor Lara at St Francis Folly. Also the hand of Midas was a rather gruesome end.

He, He, I love it, what a game :D

TR1 has it's own unique beauty that even the later TR's couldn't match. The mixture of awe-inspiring locations and beautiful waves of classical music always brings a teeny lump to my throat. Oddly enough, custom levels using the TR1 textures do the same (when they're built well), so I know it's the atmosphere the textures and the way the environments are constructed that does it. There is just something about TR1 that really is special... it comes across as such a labour of love, right down to the tiny details. Others bemoan the graphics compared to today's standards... but I really do defy anyone to find a game that just oozes atmosphere and grandeur that this one does.

I was reading this thread and I felt tempted to loot at some TR1 material, in Chronicles.

Oh my...it looks so modern and detailed, and,as you all said, some levels are just gorgeous!Even in polygonal graphics, they do look astonishing,in a way they'll still look like that in 100 years, when probably we'll be able to play in virtual reality mode :D!

I think I'll try to get it,before the Anniversary Edition is released. No remake can match the classic!

TR1 was the one of the first video games I ever played seriously and I knew immediately it was exactly the reason I had taken up gaming to enjoy. I found it tough going at first but the memory of the excitement and adrenaline rushes that first play gave me have always remained as a significant benchmark.
I enjoyed and still enjoy all the other TRs up to Chronicles. I actually think the series evolved into better games peaking at TR3 but nothing could and ever has matched that virgin experience TR1 gave me.

The Cistern has always been a real favourite with me. That sudden change in atmosphere created by going into a large, open, essentially free-roaming outdoor environment was just so refreshing. I've always loved TRs mix of 'indoor'and outdoor levels and how it is used to change the whole mood of the game. Along with the Lost Valley the Cistern is a prime example.
