Core always made Lara's 3D worlds as vast and breathtaking as they were detailed, which was way ahead of its time as far as the video game market went; even today with the most recent of TRs. We all know the way the first 5 games (excluding LA) were based on squares as far as the map went (if any of you have used the level edior you'd know that platforms are constructed from squares and then textures are layered onto them), but, they must have taken absolutely ages creating all those different texture squares for each area of the game not to mention the judging of how to arrange the many textures to create those ambient and convincing backdrops, rooms and tombs.
So... d'you think they cut corners? ;) you know, did they, maybe use the same texture over, and over and over again. I mean we wouldn't notice would we? I know it's really trivial, but I knoticed that in the colleseum, parts of the roof which overhang the colleseum floor have distinctive, golden 'M's on them, which is the same 'M' that's used to form the name 'MIDAS' in the temple of Midas level. Lol, don't ask me why I noticed this haha.
So yeah, I reckon TR1 is my favourtie for the textures and environment, but what the hell's up with those skulls that rotate as you walk around them?

When you mean the objects like the skulls I think they're called 'sprites' or something like that.

With the turning skulls- that happens with medi's and plants too, I guess it's just a '96 way of space saving and 3D ness!

And I checked before about repeating textures, it's very evident- but quite unnoticable in parts :wve:

Yup, of course the polygon count in games and consoles has risen in years and from TR3 onwards we have full 3D rendered medi packs and ammo.

The sprite effect does look tacky and cheap now, but back then it was so much more acceptable.
