View Full Version : Secret area grab 'puzzle'? (SPOILER obviously)

Whilst I was redoing the first level (PAL PS Platinum version) for another reason I noticed/remembered one thing that has always bothered me about the second secret area.
It's the one in the corner of a cave to the left with a high pull up to an alcove. That's rather the odd thing about it - you can only grab the edge if you use the pull-up command (forward/grab). If you try jump and grab she just will not make it.
I'm not certain but I can't think of any other edge, particularly so high, which works with the pull-up/grab and not the jump/grab in any TR.
There is one which maybe similar in TR3 Coastal Village but I always asumed that the difficulty in making the grab was just due to accurate positioning on a slightly raised section.
Is this one in TR1 a deliberately tricksy grab 'puzzle' or was it some kind of design mistake/bug?

Pressing both jump + action and forward + action work for me on PS.
As long as your standing to the lefe side where the ground is slightly higher....
I don't know about any others, but only action and up works for me too on that bit!

In TR3, Nevada is another spot like it. And there are some more which I can't pinpoint. But I think it might have to do with the particular height of the block in question.
This secret has really got on my nerves in the past. On at least two runs through the game I've had to make 50-100 failed leaps prior to succeeding. I've no idea whether the one-off control thing was intended or not. I imagine it was.
Oh that damn secret is so temperamental. I have even enountered situations where the forward/grab doesn't work. In fact I have found that the only really reliable way to make it work is to perform it on a run up to the edge. Simply walking to the edge and then pressing forward/grab usually fails. I have noticed many edges like this, most particularly in custom levels.
50-100 failed leaps??! Just forward-grab and you will always make it. What's the big deal.

Particularly if you're new to the game, and have formed a habit of always using jump-grab, you might not think of it until the third time through the game, OKAY? Sure is easy when you already know how. Ever hear about Columbus and the egg trick?
Well, some of us actually went through the training course before starting the game ;)

I can't think of specific examples atm, but I know that there are many places in all TRs 1-5 (including golds) where only Up+Grab works. From what I remember, it's precisely on higher edges where this move has to be applied instead of Jump+Grab.

In Coastal Village (TR3) for example, when you want to pick up grenades high on the ledge in the village. :) The only one I can remember now...

I've always thought of the pull-up/grab for lower height edges, certainly lower than that one. I'm actually fairly sure that in one of the TRs mansion training sessions the jump/grab is specifically described as being for higher ledges or words to that effect.
The one I mentioned in TR3 is in the Coastal Village just after you've gone down the slide (if you've come that way). Somewhere near the exit to the slide at the boundary of the village on the right is a possible such a pull up only ledge with some ammo, if memory serves. That's the only place I think might be similar.
50-100 failed leaps??! Just forward-grab and you will always make it. What's the big deal.
It's okay if you're in the know. If you're not, it takes a lot of experimenting as you wonder what's wrong.

Fallenangle reminds me of me own thoughts - Up + grab is for lower heights. I remember it as a good lesson about making assumptions: the hardest part is that you're not even aware you're making them, so you don't consider reviewing them.
I'm possitive if you look to the left hand side of the wall the ground is raised oh-so slightly.
Just stand as far left as possible then try it.
There were times when she just would not grab, that was annoying. But it was just one jump in one spot, didn't have that too often or that would ruin the experience.

That's what I think, too. The spot in Nevada I mentioned, the ground is slightly raised on one side aswell.

Just stand as far left as possible then try it. You're right, it is. But that's the first thing I tried (back in the previous century). I haven't played in WXP yet, maybe jump+grab will work then.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I admire the game designers for being able to hoist me on the petard of my own assumptions. The exasperation comes partly from thinking "I should have been able to think of THAT!"
There is no other way to get to that secret than to jump from the raised ground. Not sure if both jumps work.
Stand at the edge of the ramp...backflip onto it, hold jump and press action immediately.
That's...what I did anyway...
We're not talking about the first secret Assassino, we're talking about the second. :)
I had not replayed the first game for years (PS1 version), and had the chance to play it on the PC for the first time a few months ago, l knew that secret was there, tried to jump and grap the ledge on the left hand side, in the end gave up and assumed l dropped down there later, did the whole game (after many many technical problems, requiring me to repeat most sections multiple times) finished and missed one secret, the one way back in the first level. l am still thinking about whether or not l am going to replay it AGAIN just to get it. Decided to experiment with AOD on the PC next. After putting up with all the technical glitches and savegame crashes on Tomb Raider 1, AOD should be a breeze, again l have only played the PS2 version (once, swore l would never play it again) Had the PC version and never played it before
