What i find sicker is some people know they have HIV and yet still have sex, without letting the other person know, and sometimes without even using protection.
It's very distressing. :hea:

What makes me sick are some people who avoid some just because these have AIDS (I'm talking about school), even though we've learned in school dozens of times that it can't be transffered if you both don't have open wounds...

Only if the HIV+ person has their own blood in their mouth, according to one of those tests. There are traces of the virus in saliva, but not enough to infect a person.

Interesting links, angelika. I did okay, but it's always good to learn more about something.

Yeah, but only if you're watching a HIV positive person....;)

It can, but only if the infected person is bleeding and the other person have a small wound or something in their mouth.

According to the tests, I know quite a lot about it.

I beleive It indeed can be Transferred by kissing... If there is a open sores or whatever... I was told it would be very unlikely but it can also be transfered through saliva...

Nope it's not transmitted through saliva. :p

To be honest I'm not big on statistics where this sort of thing is concerned, if you know the basics and play it safe (that is don't run around boffing every hole you find, including the one in the wall) then you really don't need a whole wealth of information to call upon. In short..don't be whorin' and shootin' up with people with dirty fingernails doi! Belee dat, playah.

I know a gay couple where one of the guys, his name is Adam, has HIV, he got it because he was raped in a gay pub when he was 17. But they are a happy couple, and he is healthy, and all they have is protected sex, and the other guy, Tim, isnt HIV positive and goes for tests regulary.

Its when you get people who knowingly sleep with people unprotected, knowing they have HIV, or another sort of STI.

I always have safe sex, and would never put myself at risk, ive learnt from mistakes in the past and been very lucky.

The thing about HIV and AIDS that most people don't realise is that AIDS is not a specific disease. It is a condition that gradually destroys your body's ability to fight other diseases and conditions. Ergo, someone with AIDS can die of the common cold, or a cancer that normally is kept under control by the body's own defences.

A very interesting quiz :wve: I scored really poorly on the dates questions - when is AIDS Day? When was the first AIDS day held? etc - but I studied AIDS and HIV at A-level only a few years ago so the biology questions were ok :D

Generally speaking a person infected by HIV feels slightly ill soon after infection - flu-like symptons etc - but that clears up pretty quickly. They can then go for years without any sign of illness - ten or fifteen years is common.

That's one reason why the spread has been so difficult to control. The infection can still be passed on by those who don't know they're infected.

But once the immune system starts breaking down, life expectancy is based around how well the subsequent secondary infections are treated. This can be years where medical help is readily available, and months where it is not.

Yes, this is quite a common misconception about HIV/AIDS; the infection itself is not necessarily fatal, it is more common to die from complications arising from a greatly reduced immune response, such as pneumonia or sometimes even something as common as the influenza virus :( The one thing we can be thankful for, though, is that at present the virus cannot survive the enzymes in a mosquito's body, hence cannot be transferred by a mosquito bite. If the day ever comes when the HIV virus develops a mutation to get around this, then we will be in real trouble :(

This might shed light on the story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4432564.stm

As the article points out though, this is a very unusual case and has yet to be investigated thoroughly. If it is confirmed he is one very lucky man :wve:

Caution over HIV 'cure' claims

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40944000/jpg/_40944114_infected_cell_credited203.jpg Around 39.4 million people are thought to have HIV/AIDS

Doctors say they want to investigate the case of a British man with HIV who apparently became clear of the virus.
Andrew Stimpson, 25, was diagnosed HIV-positive in 2002 but was found to be negative in October 2003 by Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust.
Mr Stimpson, from London, said he was "one of the luckiest people alive".
The trust said the tests were accurate but had been unable to confirm Scotsman Mr Stimpson's cure because he had declined to undergo further tests.
A statement from the trust said: "This is a rare and complex case. When we became aware of Mr Stimpson's HIV negative test results we offered him further tests to help us investigate and find an explanation for the different results.

Bacteria modified to fight HIV (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4692905.stm)

"So far Mr Stimpson has declined this offer."
A trust spokeswoman added: "We urge him, for the sake of himself and the HIV community, to come in and get tested.
"If he doesn't feel that he can come to Chelsea and Westminster then he should please go to another HIV specialist."
'Miracle'
There have been anecdotal accounts before from Africa of people shaking off the HIV virus.
Mr Stimpson, who is originally from Largs in Ayrshire, said: "There are 34.9 million people with HIV globally and I am just one person who managed to control it, to survive from it and to get rid of it from my body.
"For me that is unbelievable - it is a miracle. I think I'm one of the luckiest people alive."
Mr Stimpson told the News of the World and Mail on Sunday that he became depressed and suicidal after being told he was HIV-positive but remained well and did not require medication.
Further tests
Some 14 months later he was offered another test by doctors, which came back negative.
He sought compensation but has apparently been told there is no case to answer because there was no fault with the testing procedure.
He has told the papers he would do anything he could to help find a cure.
Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "This appears to be a highly unusual case and without further tests it is impossible to draw any conclusions for people living with HIV.
"The virus is extremely complex and there are many unknowns about how it operates and how people's bodies react to it.
"Therefore, if this case were able to shed further light, it could be extremely valuable for research into treatments or a cure."
Vaccine clue
Aids expert Dr Patrick Dixon, from international Aids group Acet, said the case was "very, very unusual".
"I've come across many anecdotal reports of this kind of thing happening in Africa, some quite recently, but it's difficult to verify them," he told BBC News 24.
"You have to be rock-solid sure that both samples came from the same person, no mix-up in the laboratory, no mistakes in the testing, etc. "This is the first well-documented case." He said the case was important because "inside his immune system is perhaps a key that could allow us to develop some kind of vaccine".

Hiv is trasmited only from fluids right? Or no?

Greenkey2
29-08-06, 17:33
There are lots of HIV/AIDS related facts here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/specials/1329_aids_season/page13.shtml

Night_Heaven, HIV can be transmitted during sexual intercourse, through blood (usually by sharing needles or having a transfusion of infected blood) or from mother to baby (either in the womb or through breast-feeding).

Basically the virus is transmitted via bodily fluids.

azumi_mm
29-08-06, 18:58
Even condoms can't protect you sufficiently!

Fluids (semen, ******l mucus) does transmit HIV. So if you have a tiny sore at your hands...

Therefore I don't have any sex until the person who want to have sex with me, does a fresh HIV test!

There are three things that disgust me:

- People who know they are infected and keep on having sexual relationships without protection;

- People who prefer not to use condoms because it prevents them from feeling the " experience";

- The Catholical church's positions, recommending abstinence, instead of using its influence in Africa to recommend condoms. Africa is dying, but they stick to their pathetic views, while children start dying inside their mother's bellys!

Catholics are stupid anyway and they're view suck [yes I know I am one;)]

I heard a story about a woman who deliberately had unprotected nookie [ sorry I can't say 'it'] and murdered hundreds of men, because she was raped by someone who had it and 'caught' it, this was considered her revenge on the male species!!!!!
She's in the clink for life.
