@Drewy. The Steelers won the superbowl last season, but official season just started again today, and the Steelers just won their first game against the Dolphins. :jmp:

Just a question. Our football (Aussie Rules) revolves around kicking, as opposed to rugby whch something similar to gridiron, which has less but still called football. Then you have soccer- all kicking.

Melonie Tomb Raider
08-09-06, 04:32
Good grief buddy, I could go on forever and ever, there's just so many rules! :vlol:

I'll put it as simply as possible. The ball is your prized possession. It's like the last morcel of food in a room filled with a million starving barbarians who have not eaten in a week. The ball is a jewel, a prize, a treasure! Everyone WANTS the ball!

Ok, so there is an offense and a defense. The offense is the team who has possession of the ball. It's theirs for the time being. The offense consist of many different positions. Firstly, I'll mention the offensive linemen. They're the big guys up front. Their job is to protect the guys behind them from the bad guys on defense. The guy in the middle of the offensive line, the center, holds the ball on the ground and later throws in between his legs to the quarterback. The quarterback now has possession of the ball. He can either hand it off to the running back, who will then run with the ball as far as he can, or the QB can throw the ball to a receiver (the guys running out, trying to get open), or the QB can run it himself (which, most of the time, is not a good idea unless you're Michael Vick). The defense's goal is to stop the ball from moving forward, and while they are at it, they can try to steal the ball themselves. The offense, mind you, have 4 plays. However, if they make it past 10 yards, they're back to their 1st play. If they do not make it on 4 tries, the team on defense will now get the ball where it last stood, only this time moving them to offense now.

The goal of the game is to take the ball from your side of the field all the way to the opponents side of the field, into the endzone. This is the touchdown. Now you don't only have to make touchdowns, there are field goals too. For example, let's say it's 4th down and 30 yards to go. Most of the time, the offense is going to kick the football through the goal post for a field goal. Because that's way too risky to try to make a play off of that at 4th down.

Touchdowns are worth 6 points each, but 7 with the extra point. After making a touchdown a team has the option of either kicking through the goal post, which would give them an extra point (7), or they can try to make it in the endzone again for 2 points (8). Most of the time, just one extra point is made, since it is more guaranteed. Unless the game is almost over and you need that point. Or unless you're the New Orlean Saints, they went for 2 WAY too much. :vlol: Well I doubt so much anymore since they got a new head coach.

But anyway, field goals are worth 3 points.

Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins.

There is soooooo much more I could tell, but it would take me all day lol. I have no idea how much you knew already, so I really babied it up. :p

Why is it called football when its rarely kicked?

It's kicked a lot actually. Well, depends on how much you're used to. Not even close to as much as soccer. :p

Still, the ball is kicked for extra points, field goals, punts, and kick offs. So yeah, that's still a lot of kicking.

Great offensive line play enables good QB play... even if that QB is basically average. Put Big Ben, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady behind a really bad offensive line and they wouldn't be nearly as good as they are. Put an average QB behind a really good offensive line and you can go to a Super Bowl.

The AFC North might be a real humdinger this year! Steelers win... Bengals win... and MY Ravens CRUSH Tamp Bay 27-0!!! :yah:

I'll tell you, I hope Batch is QB'ing for you guys when my Ravens play you! It would make it easier. Right now we're off to a tremendous start with a dominant win over a top NFC team on the road. It all comes down to playing well within your own division though, and the AFC North will be a dogfight between the Steelers, Bengals and Ravens.

Sounds familiar actually. My older brothers likes the Patriots because when he was a kid that was his favorite team on ABC Monday Night Football for the SNES. It's been about 13 years since then though and he's still extremely loyal to his team. :vlol:

I picked the Steelers because when I was about ten years old I got a bunch of books at the library regarding different football teams. The Steelers book fascinated me the most, so I decided to choose them as my team. :D

Well, we made a good attempt, but sadly the 49ers lost to the Cardinals 34-27. I'm really excited about the future of the 49ers though, because Alex Smith, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, and Antonio Bryant all looked really impressive. I’m sure the Niners aren’t going to be a playoff team this year, but who knows, we still have 16 weeks left! ;)

Lol, that’s pretty much how I picked my team. I would always play as the 49ers in NFL Gameday ’95 for the PS1, so I kind of started becoming a big fan of them. 11 years later, and I’m pretty much obsessed with the Niners! :p

I thought it was a good move at the time... Trent played only just well enough to not mess things up for that awesome defense. We had a great running game and special teams too, but Trent's play was not that great, believe a guy who watched all the games...

Elvis Grbac was a pro bowl QB who had thrown for like 4,000 yards the previous season with KC... it seemed a good upgrade, and a smart move to not rest on our laurels. In point of fact losing Jamal Lewis that preseason is what killed the Ravens chances of repeating. Trent would have done no better than Elvis; I think it might have been worse, in fact. We still made it to the playoffs and won a first round playoff game (hammering the Dolphins), but the Steelers really had our number that year and beat us in a hard fought second round game. Jamal might have made a big difference though.
