View Full Version : Who else hates maths?

I have to say, that this is a REAL miracle... I mean, the school at my country began only a week ago, but somehow it managed to make me hate maths from heart! It's not only boring, but it's the same in every year and the only difference is the difficulty of the problems. Plus the fact, that I'm not good at it, makes me hate it even more!

Geography and English are good subjects, I like them, but maths is a another topic. I simply can't bring up sentimental feelings toward this subject :hea:

If you agree, raise your hand! :D

Maths - I like the class cos I sit with a friend, the teacher is cool and it's y'know just quite pleasant to be there (except for the fact I may be asked to solve something in which case I turn into a bumbling fool where all knowledge has left the brain).

The work however... I know my formulas it's just getting the correct numbers and values and what else that always seems to go wrong, LOL!

I can't believe I actually picked Higher Maths (I'm surprised I managed to pass my Standard Grade exam, LoL) and then actually asked my teacher for extra work to do at home - oh well, if it's a way to help with maths then it's all good :D

I absolutely DESPISE math and everything about it. I'm no good at it, so that doesn't really help. I try, but I'm just not good at it. Although last year I managed to keep up a B most of the year in the class, this year I've sunk to a C+ or something, and it's only the first quarter of the school year. :(

I'm number dyslexic (if I have to write down / say more than 4 numbers in a sequence, I will get at least 2 of them muddled up. I'm quite used to dialling wrong numbers on telephones... :o) , so I find maths a nightmare. My husband is a maths whizz-kid and finds it really easy (he can count in hexadecimal and work out 'to the power of....' type equations in his head... :rolleyes:), but if I'm presented with even relatively simple equations, I get very flustered because I can't picture them in my head in any way and they jumble themselves up on the page. Words I'm fine with - maths makes me feel stoopid... :(

Geck-o-Lizard

I know what you mean. It's especially annoying when it happens mid-quadratic-equation and none of the numbers in the sum make sense. http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4928/anxiousns1.gif

I can count hexadecimal pretty easily but mainly only because I use it to define colours when I'm doing web design stuff. :)

Okay I got some maths homework today and I need some help but first to answer that question on calculus - I have no idea, it's name is just "Higher Maths". If it helps we've done Recurrence Relation, Median, Midpoint and other stuff of a triangle and functions and graphs.

As for the questions...

"The functions f, g and h are defined as
f(x) = x +1 g(x) = 2x3 and h(x) = x2

Find the formula for the following
f(g(x)) g(f(x)) f(h(x)) f-1(x) g-1(x)

for the first 3 I have:

g = 2x3
f(g) = x(2x3)+1
= 2x4 + 1

f = x + 1
g (f) = 2x3(x + 1)
= 2x4 + 2x3
= 4x7

h = x2
f(h) = x(x2)+1
=x3+1

I don't have anything for the last two but I think the first 3 are completely wrong so can anyone check and help me with that (the homework sheet is for Friday so I'm quite glad I'm doing this early).

Oh and if you've to draw f(x) = x2 (which is a parabola), then -f(x) of that (which would be the parabola upside down) and then f(-x) + 2 would that be the parabola moved up 2 because if it's reflected on the y-axis it'd look exactly the same as the first parabola, right? And yes, I have confused myself typing that out, LoL.

Apologies for not being able to put the square values at the top, don't know the code for it so they just got smalled :p

The first one I believe that is thus,
g = 2x3
f(g) = x + 2x3(x)
= x + 2x4 = 2x5

but you have to assure it because that I learned this thousand years ago.
The other I see them well :ton: ;)
