I'm currently playing TR1 again, and I'm in Damocles in Saint Francis Folly.
I was just thinking why they would put swords floating above Laras head and suddenly fall? How can they get swords to float above peoples head? I think this is a dumb room to put in the game. I would like it changed... Do you?

Well, the Sword of Damocles according to the myth is hanging by a single strand of hair from a horse. You wouldn't be able to see it.
Nope :D
It fits in with the myth, as Cap't M said. It's also a nice change of pace and something different to overcome - no keys, levers or moveable blocks anywhere in sight :tmb:
First time I played it, I felt a genuine sense of tension and nervousness about going anywhere near those swords - I think it's aaaaallll good stuff :)

Three things:
1) Wrong forum
2) Legend has it that the swrd was held up by a single thread of hair. So i doubt youd be able to see it (especially back in the day of 1996 graphics)
3) That room is fantastic, and surpasses anything found in legend. If only Crystal understood what was meant by the term 'trap' and actually tried to re-create rooms like those found in TR1...
I have to defend that room, I thought it was as good as any of the other rooms
(thor beats them all though :p). It always made me jump which is what I love about the classics. If TR:AE is a remake of TR1 then this definately needs to be included. Like Rivendell would say, who needs realism in TR?
:) I think ITA posted here because it might relate of the AE if it is indeed a remake, 'cookie ;)
True Reggie! Realism - Pah! (well, with most things anyway ;) )
It boils down to the Damocles legend, and the fact that it's different from anywhere else in the game - I say keep it as it is: a different type of trap. :tmb:

What a lovely trap that was indeed. Very inventive, and also very original for it's time. More things like this should be added for variety whenever it is possible. I papped 'em the first time through in that room. 'Baby steps Petey, baby steps....' :)
If you want realism, you wouldn't find T-Rex in hidden valleys, skinless mutants, nor a long-frozen-now-alive -ancient Atlantis ruler nor a heroine capable of beating them all bearing pistols with infinite ammo :D!
In Portugal, we have this expression " nem que esteja a chover canivetes",which, badly translated, means "I'll do something even if it's raining swiss knives":D.So,swords falling over Lara's head it just a more elegant version of that!

3) That room is fantastic, and surpasses anything found in legend. If only Crystal understood what was meant by the term 'trap' and actually tried to re-create rooms like those found in TR1...See this is the problem isn't it? Some people see the genius and beauty of that room and want to experience more and other people just... don't.
And although the first game was based entirely around this concept of mystical and magical place hidden away from the world, and full of strange and inexplicable traps... we should now take it out and do god knows what instead. Run down corridors in a fluid and smooth way no doubt.
To me, this type of thing is as much TR as Lara Croft.

1) Wrong forum
This is not the wrong forum. I want something changed in this room in the AE.:ton:
"Well, the Sword of Damocles according to the myth is hanging by a single strand of hair from a horse. You wouldn't be able to see it"
Ahh! You see, I have no idea what Damocles is :D So please teach me more.
this shows that good levels are built upon research... (what the hell was thor doing in a greek monastery tough? did they know who he was )

We are dealing with mythology, legends, history, magic, the occult in many of the TR games. They bring an out of this world experience to the reality of our daily lives. To live these extremes is fun and in a game environment, safe. Even if it's not safe for lara. :mis: Would you rather lara just read about these things, or live them? I don't mind the far fetched, it adds variety and flavor to the games. If everything were just based on reality it would narrow the amount of things to do and variety of fun we could have beating them. For that matter, how did these animals survive with nothing to eat till lara showed up? Wouldn't they all be dead? Where'd these mummies come from? Aren't they just fables? It's fun for all these things to come to life in front of lara's face. :D :jmp:

Damn, you beat me to it. I thought that to. Thor is a Norse Gods. Zeus would have better suited that room, since he controls thunder and lightning.

Once you get into the room. (Thor).
How do you get to the other side of the room, without it electrifing you? I had a tough time doing that room.
Stand and watch the lightning. You will see it strike the metal plates. That is how electricity works. It will strike the closest thing that is conductive.
So, when you see it striking a metal plate, run into the corner. Turn and wait for the lightning to strike another plate, preferably further away from Lara, and then run into the other room. The lightning will only strike Lara if she is the closest, most conductive thing there. :)

Thanks but.
There are 2 dark corners, are they supposed to help?
Either corner should be fine. I tend always to run Lara into the right corner, and then straight ahead into the other room. If you stand her right in the corner, the lightning cannot strike her.

Hmm...... Argh, I'm trying to out smart you :D
Oops! I ran into the left, and I found going that way, useful...

Agreed. I was totally freaked out, wondering when it'll all come flying at me. It was a real thrill and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I loved that room
:tmb:
Hm? Damocles rocks! Although I'd wish there would be more room. I always get stuck on the pillars when I try to move through fast.

Look up, and move.
Keep reapeating this when the you have got the key.

I've own the game for 10 years. I mean, I move in a speed run-ish way, although I collect and kill everything. Somehow I always get stuck on those pillars for a half a second when I'm heading for the key, but on the way out - it's a lot easier. Even when the swords are falling from the roof. Funny that.

I've already been answerd wrong thanks.
i'm quite surprised that people have such strong feelings about this sword room (love it/ hate it)
i didn't really give it much thought TBH, but i think it's quite a nice touch actually.
still don't get how they draw towards lara as they fall though, it's quite easy to explain how they are up there in the first place, but magnetically drawing towards you??
anyway, i like it.

Sounds to me like someone was getting tired of Lara dying here. Personally l always liked the St Francis Folly level, although getting to the secret down the bottom has always driven me nuts, l think the last time l played the level the motto was l do not care how much life she looses, l want to get to that bloody door before it closes. l am looking forward to seeing how Toby managed to update this area, and yet still keep it challenging

Errrrr....I didn't die. At all. As I'll say again, I had no idea what Damocles was until I think it was TRM that said that they were hung by Horse Hair.
There is no need in copying answers.
yup, that thor thing was messed up! XD
i wondr if they'll keep the name thor, or change it to zeus in the AE...

the sword always follows me + scares the crap out of me?

Is even more fun when playing with no health packs. I usually end the level with a speck of health if I go for all the secrets.
Oh, and I love Damocles, just the way it is. Teaches you patience :tmb:
Fortunately l usually have plenty of health packs by the time l reach here, although being a real miser with parting with them l always begrudge using the few it takes me to get that secret, l resorted to going down the safe way, killing the lions and going all the way back to the top and saving last time, just so l could be sure if she died in my mad rush to get to the bottom, it was not going to be because l could not avoid the lions. l cannot for the life of me remember how l used to do it so easy on the playstation, had not played the game for 5 odd years when l replayed it earlier in the year, forgot the lions were down there first time, and could not remember which door l was meant to be trying for, top near the pool or bottom. Dropped Lara from the top so she died right in front of the door to be sure, yep it was open :D
I don't mean having none, I mean using none. Makes it a challenge, all secrets- no health packs.
l could do no scratch on Playstion, but l am a hopeless keyboard player, lack of practice l think is my problem
I'm with you there, I'm useless on the PC too.
I loved the sword of damocles room. In a cold sweat, I literally inched Lara's ay gingerly through that room, with my heart in my mouth wondering if I would make it. :)

Oftopic:HoW could I set the resolution for TR1?
no way,.. next tomb raider should change to be close to this level, and especially to the damocles room,.. (i never really understood what was thor doing there, but,..) tomb raider have always been based on mythical and ancient relics to be found, rooms to be braked in, and places to dig up,.. thats whats lara about,... we all love her, and thats why we want her to do as much things as possible just to let her be more flexible to likes and dislikes,.. but,... trying to change something that set the first stone into the classics is suicidal,.. that room probably have much more content that many games, including tomb raider legend, which only could be saved by the bell, talking about the arthuric myth,... having in mind that its just been mention and not really make it interact with us,.. like there,... i like legends,.. i really do,... dont get me wrong,.. but saying damocles room should be changed is close to be an abomination,..
althou some other places in some other tr games are a bit out,.. to much mythical things and not really well justified,... i mean... it goes beyond mythical, and goes close to lots of imagination, and not really a myth after it,...
There has been nothing to top the whole of St. Francis' Folly in any of the games after TR1, IMHO.
Damocles...learn more and you'll appreciate the room that much more! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_Damocles
Also, in the Thor room I never hid in the corners (althought that is a good strategy). I jist ran and did dive rolls through after the lightning cleared.
If you REALLY want to sweat your socks off, check out this AWESOME speed run throught this board. The Damocles room leaves me in a cold sweat they way this guy navigates it!
