And about HDR again. Well, when I get into something, I do it fast. So I present to you, my very first try with HDR: On The Streets Tonight (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/56343112/) :D

[Bear in mind that it really is my first try, and as it was around 1 AM when I took the pics, I didn't have much choice of subject, so obviously it's not a perfect pic, but hopefully practise makes perfect :D]

@Elodia: I like the composition. But did you use a digital zoom on those pictures? Check to see if you have a macro feature or at the very least keep the camera as wide as possible and get as close as you can to your subject while still being in focus. Otherwise I liked the shots. :wve:

Thanks. This was a digital that I converted using channel mixer in Photoshop. I think I used 50R 50G 0B (nearly the same as a orange or deep yellow filter). Next I matched my histogram in levels. Then I used a mask in Photoshop to bring out the field's contrast. It's really no different than burning and dodging in the darkroom. The final step was to convert to greyscale and voila a B&W image.

I did think about taking the 4x5 with me, but it was so windy it wouldn't have been worth it!

I am naught more than a simple amateur photographer with a phone camera, but aren't most people nowadays? Still, I'd really like to get a real camera at some point, but don't have enough money.

Anyway, some pics:

Grime. (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/38234447/) Not a great quality camera, but one of my favourites I've ever taken. I like the angle and stuff.

Architectural Delight. (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/40096660/) One of the few pics I have of Lincoln Cathedral.

There's more pics on my dA, so check em out. Also got some more I might put up soon.

The thread got buried due to other topics, but as you can see it's been around for a while. Glad to have you aboard.

I shoot with Canon EOS as well. And there are mobile phone photos scattered about, so share what you've got.

By the way, nothing wrong with a little pride in my opinion. I tend to call myself a decent photographer, it justs seems a fairly self-effacing description. I leave it to others to describe my work however they see fit ;)

In the spirit of the 4th, I thought I'd share a photo of President Roosevelt. Well actually a good facsimile of him. There was a special train to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt's 100th anniversary of visiting the tall redwoods of Santa Cruz County in California in 2003. This guy was top notch as you thought he was the President! If you've watched the History Channel special on the Spanish-American war this is the same guy acting as TR.

I'm getting a new Canon camera for Christmas...

Why do you know that? I thought Christmas gifts were supposed to be surprises.

I'm going to join too. I like to take pictures. I took a really good one of a kite today, but it's on my sister's camera (I don't have my own).

I took my folks up to Half Moon Bay, California for some lunch and a bit of sightseeing this morning. There were plenty of tourists still flocking to the beaches inspite of the coastal fog. The beaches at Pigeon Point were not busy, so we stopped for a few moments to pick up seashells while I did photos.

I noticed we had a really cool-looking clock in our living room (it's amazing what epiphanies you can reach when you're bored), so I decided to take some pictures of it. :p As much as these pictures look like they were shot using film, they're digital! I was really surprised at how they turned out.

Believe me, I have plenty of blurred and far away shots myself from when I was younger! I used to take my camera with me to almost every concert I could back then, and just kept at it. Alright, lemme take a shot at this. :p

This one represents the deserted playgrounds dedicated to modern children, only to be left alone while kids play their video games and watch TV.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v111/cottoncatkyle/CIMG4765.jpg

This one represents how people show no respect for nature and do not care about it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v111/cottoncatkyle/CIMG4766.jpg

This one represents how machinery has caused a huge impact on today's generation, no one thinking how they could live without it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v111/cottoncatkyle/CIMG4767.jpg

And finally, this one represents how small rodents (rats, squirrels, mice, etc.) are hated by the modern community, but none thinking how they are good for the environment.

Here's an old Kodachrome from the archives that I scanned last night. About 10 years ago southern Monterey County was still growing tomatos. Meyer Tomato had a large warehouse located in King City, and you'd see the tomato trucks start rolling around in late summer. Since then south county has really gone heavy on wine and not that much tomato business is around today.

Thanks! I fell absolutely in love with the Paris Opera. I think I liked the Opera house more than Versailles (other than its gardens which were absolutely spectacular btw, even in the rain!)! Of course it was extremely packed in Versailles... But did your jaw not drop to the floor when you set foot in that grand hallway at the Opera House??!

Great pics as well, I love the Kate Nash one! :tmb:

Completely understood, Gloriosa. What gig was it?

It was at the Arctic Monkeys gig, at Lancashire County Cricket ground, 29th July.
The support acts were The Parrots, Amy Winehouse, The Coral and Supergrass.
It was quite a nice day out, though we were stuck in traffic outside Old Trafford (ugh) for an hour afterwards, and only got back to Preston at about one in the morning. As is typical when we see the Arctic Monkeys, we got nowhere near the front, but at least this time we were nowhere near the back.

Anyway, more photos, since this is a photography thread and I donít want to get accused of spamming :D:

No one can ever get it right at an outdoor festival in Britain. And the traffic queues are worth a whole page worths' of moaning alone! But you did well, as it looks like ther were about a million people behind you in the most recent set of photos posted. And that white one must be Gaz's touring hat :)

Nice to know you're in the large format club! :p

No, I didn't use any filters for this shot. I used a 100mm-400mm zoom and if you look in the center of the background the bright spot is a reflection of the rising morning sun. The low angle of the sun caused the rim lighting on the plants, too. The color was produced by the extreme lens flare caused by the bright sun. When I got the chrome back I was amazed because it actually looked burnt! :)
I don't recommend anybody try photographing the sun unless you know what your doing. You could permenantly damage your eyesight.

I checked out your website and I think large-format photography might be too slow and cumbersome for people/action subjects. Cheers for that. I know using anything larger than 35mm would be pointless for the live shots, but I'm hoping to branch into portraiture eventually, and having a larger format would give me an obvious edge. Plus I would love to work with film again. I had to switch to digital as time is of the essence.

And I loved your architecture shots. Beautiful :)

Have you considered medium format? It's seems much more suitable to wedding/portrait/people photography. Mamiya (http://www.mamiya.com/home.asp) made a 6x6 or 6x7 a few years ago that functioned just like an SLR, and you can switch between digital or film backs! :tmb:

I'd like to get a digital 4x5 back if only to test and see the difference between it and film. :pYep, I am aware of the Mayima. It's still a pipe dream at this point. I still have to complete my current lens situation. I currently have a 70-200 4.0 L and standard kit lenses, but I need to get the 28-70 L 2.8 and replace the 4.0 with a 2.8 IS. And probably add the 1.4 50mm fixed. Oh, and a second DSLR! So, as you can see, I have a few hurdles to complete before thinking of adding a a larger format camera. Unless one falls magically in my lap, that is :)

There are plenty of fire sales on eBay on large format. Many LF'ers have left all film behind to go digital. Heck I picked up a box of Ektachrome E100G for $30 yesterday. The begging question is will you have the time to do it? Digital is quick and great for my business with the Navy. However when it comes to fun, I like to go backpacking with the beast. Yup it's time consuming, but then again it's art. :p

Nope. Very close though. It's Craven Cottage, Fulham's ground.

The main reason for the trip to London was so we could watch Fulham v Bolton on the Wednesday night, then Portsmouth v Bolton on Saturday, and not have to travel down from Preston individually for each game. I don't even support Bolton, but at least I got a little holiday out of it.

And thanks for your comments, everyone :D

Nothing spectacular here, just a couple shots from my weekend get away.

This one was a five minute exposure at midnight. The only light sources are the lights from the houses and the fire off the right side of the frame (hence the odd light effect on the jet ski).

Excellent DOF control also, Apofiss! :tmb:

The Silk City Diner shot is a flatbed scan of a print I made when I had access to a color darkroom. The neg was one in a bracketed series and was really good.
I didn't do any major retouching in photoshop except tweaked the brightness/contrast to bring out the neon glow and sharpening. If I can find the original scan I'll post it, but I moved recently and am having a hard time finding things. :(

Found it on an old Zip disk! :yah: God, did I do all that spotting?
It's pointless to post this for online viewing since it's a .tiff and is 19MB so you're free to download it here:

Scan of Silk City Diner print(19.1MB) (http://takeme.home.comcast.net/~takeme/gallery/images/SlkCty.tif).

Mr. Burns: Are your shots digital or film?

Mr.Burns
31-08-07, 06:32
@Akhenaton: Digital unfortunately. I don't have access to a darkroom and I'd rather stick with medium or large format if I could. The only benefit to where I live is that I'm close enough to Kodak that assuming they still offer development services for larger format films, I could go through them. I'm currently using a Nikon D50.

I've been studying your lake shot, Mr. Burns, and don't quite know what to make of it. I'm not familiar with digital photography and if that shot was on film I'd say you have a definite color shift towards cyan. Do your low-light timed exposures always look cyan? I've done low-light timed shots on chrome for close to twenty minutes before a noticable color shift appears, and it's always towards green, at least for outdoors at night shots.

If your near Kodak have you been to the George Eastman house yet? I went a few years ago and will never forget the print of the flag raising on Iwo Jima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima) by Joe Rosenthal.

That was a mistake on my part, I had the color temperature set for IR work I was doing earlier that day. Just forgot I guess, but when I saw the color shift, I liked it. :)

Yes, I was there yesterday actually. Just caught the Ansel Adams exhibit. It's quite a thrill to be able to see some of his most famous work. :D

I took other blurry photos, but that's the only one I wanted to be blurry. :o

I would post a couple of pictures of the train but I won't because 1, they're not fantastic pictures and 2, Sam Reeves will probably be outraged at having his train monopoly taken away. :D

Case the place for security and find your shot before hand. Then be fast and deliberate when you go for it.

Hehehe. That reminds me of my days of guerilla film making. Get in, get out, don't get caught. :D
