I find this one of her intriguing... I like the way the light is hitting her face and creating some shadwos. I also like how you have her off to the side of the picture and not dead center.

Here are a few of my favorites from my trip to Europe last year:

These were taken in Ireland at Glendalough in County Wicklow:

WOW! I can't help commenting on these shots! :whi:
Awesome pics! :tmb: I love how you can get so much detail. My camera sucks! :D

I think this is your best shot (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/Ikas90/P4050356.jpg)because the color saturation and detail looks right. The second shot (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/Ikas90/P4050357.jpg)looks over-exposed and the highlights are a little washed out.
Nice use of flat lighting to reduce the contrast and bring out the shadow details in the shapes! :)
Your camera, basically, is used for exposure control. It's the lens that controls visual acuity. :pi:
For detail get as close as you can to your subject and use the appropriate focal length lens to frame your composition.
Here's the original drum scan of a large-format image of a Ukranian church in America(you can see the claw marks from the film holder in the bottom corners). So far away and yet a connection:

http://takeme.home.comcast.net/~takeme/gallery/images/Ukranian Church.jpg

The curvy lines and contrast between the bright sandy foreground and muddy background in this shot (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n131/Ikas90/P4190387.jpg)really caught my eye. After viewing it numerous times I seem to recognize a reclining woman's hip  in the line between the sandbank and the river, but maybe it's just my interpretation. :vlol: I think you have a good eye for shapes and textures, Ikas90. :tmb:

I thought the foreground and background needed cropping so I took the liberty of creating a cropped and sharpened version. (http://photosites.info/personal/images/Europe041_edit.jpg)

Beautifull interior shot, Lonely Istari! Perfect exposure. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/mesteele/Europe/Europe528.jpg) Here's a tip for architectural shots:
If you want the vertical lines to be straight up and down keep the back of your camera parallel to the vertical lines, in this case the columns are the vertical lines.
Hope this helps! :wve:

I thought this was the best place to post this. What are your thoughts on the Canon 300D Digital Rebel (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=9430#ModelTechSpecsAct)?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/jamieoliver22/canon_300d_digitalrebel.jpg

I should hopefully be getting one shortly for free, as a gift from my college for some editing/filming work I did a few weeks back (plus other projects I have helped out with in the past). So yeah, does anyone own one or know about them?

To be honest, I have never really used a dSLR camera, I am more of a simple point-and-shoot person, so it seems I will have to start learning :p Hopefully, there should be some good photos from me in the future, once I learn the basics. Our college is setting up a short photography course in a few weeks also, so that should help.

The 300D is a good camera, but not a great camera. I believe the 300D's shutter is rated for 20-30K actuations before it fails. So you will probably have to look into shutter replacement at some point if you are going to use the body a lot. Hence why they are so cheap on the used market.

You seem to know a lot about photography. ;) Do you do it for a living or is it just a hobby?

It started as a hobby when I was young. When I can find my first photos I'll post'em. After a while I thought I might try it for a living, took college courses in art and photography, attended the Maine Photographic Workshops (http://theworkshops.com) and assisted pros in the Philadelphia/Baltimore/New York area for about five years. After viewing the inside workings of the industry I decided to leave it as a hobby. I enjoy the creative freedom more than the financial reward.

Thanks again for the compliments and advice! I'm always open to constructive criticism. :tmb:

Me too! Feedback is invaluable, whether it's positive or negative!

Wow! That makes me think of the game Jenga! lol Very interesting architecture! :tmb: It does look like it's sinking!

I always wanted to take a class on Photography... but haven't the time or money to do so. I do know a bit about composition from my painting and drawing classes, so I try to make my photos as interesting as possible and compositionally aesthetic. But I definitely have a lot to learn. I am going into Graphic Design as my career field, and I'm sure good photographical skills will come in handy! ;)

Point and shoots do have their limitations Saki. If you're interested in sharper images I'd recommend to start browsing digital SLR's. SLR's will give you the best in lenses and element glass to help with any light or dimensional distortions that can sometimes happen with a point and shoot.

Hmm I guess that's true these days, but I'm not sure if it works like that by default. My own camera, which is not an SLR, makes sharper and clearer pictures than some of the cheaper SLRs out there - especially compared to the ones from when I got my camera, around 2004.

Also getting a new camera didn't really sound like an option... Ikas90, for a really minimal point-and-shoot you're generally quite well with an Olympus. Do you have any image editing software? Simply sharpen the pic and perhaps add some contrast, and it almost always instantly looks a lot better. :p

I agree with Sam, if you really want sharper, crisper detail in your images you need better glass. The best glass I ever saw was a Carl Zeiss lens(don't remember the lens details because I was busy loading backs with slide film and setting lights) mounted on a Hasselblad medium format body. The results were unforgettable, the sharpest images I've ever seen!
One possibility for your existing camera could be the use of a mono pod to reduce camera shake. Either look on the bottom of the camera for a threaded hole or check the manual to find out the specifications of such hole. If it exists you can mount it on any camera support(mono pod, tripod, etc,), if not you may need to look at grip suppliers for some sort of a clamp-on mount adapter.
Some links:
B&H Photo Video, New York, NY. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)
Matthews Grip Equipment (http://www.matthewsgrip.com/)
If you get a mono pod get a plate with the standard 1/4 - 20 screw and then if you decide to get a SLR it'll fit. :)

Do you have any image editing software? Simply sharpen the pic and perhaps add some contrast, and it almost always instantly looks a lot better.
WRONG! :smk: When I first learned how to use photoshop and I was shooting something and encountered some problem or another I thought 'I can fix it in photoshop later' rather than solving the problem at the time of making the image. BIG MISTAKE! :( If you produce a blurry image to begin with no amount of sharpening will fix it. Learn how to use your camera, the quality of your images begins with your camera work. :tmb:

I got the small version for my girlfriend. It seemed like a great thing, but it turned out that it's really not that stable and wobbles in the wind. Since my girlfriend mostly does macro, that's of course unacceptable.

I would have also let them repair my external flash, if it wasn't that they charge 150 euro per object, which is half the flash's worth...

I'm not a terribly amazing photographer, damn I'm only a teenager. But I love taking photos, I like capturing moments, more so un-posed things, like taking pictures of people showing emotions instead of just posing and smiling in front of a camera. Anyways, here's some pics I took this evening:

GeckoKid - that's HDR stuff, right?
While they are absolutely amazing, I'm personally somewhat against the use of all those techniques... At least if it should still be called "photography"... What's your take on that?

GeckoKid
17-05-08, 22:14
my take is that "the end result is all that matters".

besides, i also disagree with how "purist" think of photography, if what they really saw in the scene is different to how the camera saw it, i see no reason to completely obey the camera's "eyes" in that respect. We have a much wider dynamic range than a CCD/CMOS's, and I would be more frustrated if the camera doesn't show the beautiful sunset against a forest (for example), but instead it blows out the sky completely, or makes the foreground completely pitch black. That's not how I perceived the scene, and I don't think I should allow myself to adjust to the camera's brain(and the shutter and aperture of course, but that's not the point...), which isn't always the "right" solution. In film photography there had been darkrooms and different techniques that combine photos of different exposures together to achieve a similar HDR effect, I don't see why we should go backwards and be "traditional".

afterall they are "my" photos, I'm the one who took it, not my camera ;)

last week i've been in Berlin and stayed at my uncle's flat. it was really amazing! i had loads of fun there. it was already the third time i've been there. :p maybe i'll ascend to there already this year again, if my application for drama school will be successful. then i have to pass the entracne examination. if i manage all this i'll move to Berlin and live there for at least three years while i go to drama school.

anyway, i made some pictures for you all, enjoy. :) i wrote the names of the most buildings in german, because i don't know how to translate some of them, and of some buildings even i don't know the name in german lol.

maybe i'll post some more pictures the next days (of the big parc in Berlin, statue of Friedrich der Große and other stuff). Berlin is a really beautiful town and very large. if you're going to visit Berlin you should make a tour with the bus or boat, that's advisable. the tour guide explains you everything about the city, or at least the most important things.

GeckoKid - that's HDR stuff, right?
While they are absolutely amazing, I'm personally somewhat against the use of all those techniques... At least if it should still be called "photography"... What's your take on that?

my take is that "the end result is all that matters".
In film photography there had been darkrooms and different techniques that combine photos of different exposures together to achieve a similar HDR effect, I don't see why we should go back wards and be "traditional".

afterall they are "my" photos, I'm the one who took it, not my camera ;)

OLD techniques:
This is an image of a reproduction of one of the shacks that George Washington's soldier's spent the winter of 1776 in:

http://takeme.home.comcast.net/~takeme/gallery/images/logcabin.jpg

Technique: Painting with light.
I locked the shutter open on my tripod mounted Canon ElanIIe on a very foggy night at Valley Forge National Park and climbed into the fireplace to light the interior of the shack with multiple bursts from a hand-held flash.
Then I painted the exterior using a hand-held halogen spotlight.
Technique: Cross processing.
This image was made on E-6(color reversal) film but processed in C-41(color negative) chemistry and scanned from a print.
Is this image, produced using 'traditional' techniques, a photograph?

Photographer's are artists just as much as painters and sculptors, and as their tools evolve so does their art. Lead the way GeckoKid!

This Limestone farm dwelling was brought from Chedworth, Gloucestershire in the Cotswold Hills of southwestern England. Built approximately 1620, the construction of this house coincided with the first waves of English immigration in the colonies of the New World.

....strange birds photographed today near the Stone Jetty in Morecambe UK

Cormorants!
Went walking round the Forest of Bowland (also in Lancashire, we must be neighbours), when we encountered a family of grouse sat on the path just in front of us. Well, I say ‘encountered’, it’s more like we nearly walked on top of them because they were just sat there. They ran off as soon as we approached, but this one couldn’t keep up:
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w136/Gloriosity/RedGrouse.jpg
It was so cute! We waited for it to move for a while, and it went and joined its family again, which was nice.

Some of the scenery:

When we got back we went to see St Walburge’s Church in Preston, a church so good it’s probably going to be closed due to a lack of funding, and converted into apartments or some other nonsense...

Beautifully captured as ever Sam. :tmb:

Here's a couple from my visit to Zentralfriedhof :

This is an angel carved from stone and I think the facial contours behind the stone veil have been masterfully done. I was in awe. I stood transfixed for a whole minute or two before I managed to get out my camera. I love it.

The softness of the rose against the hard background was worth a shot to try and capture.

I live at the river delta, so there's loads of tiny islands scattered around. The ground is still rising, so each year the water level seems to be lower. Around 10 years ago the beach line was clearly closer.

Thanks! :D

Its a 35 millimeter SLR Canon EOS rebel. It still uses film but its a good dependable camera. They cost about $200 here in the states.

Nice job with the clock tower Saki. Love it how the birds are all congregated up high. Also the soft sunset was nicely done. Love how the warm colors blend in with the clouds.

Here's an old 2 1/4" from me. Blossoms in my old backyard from about 10 years ago.

Your pictures are beautiful! I love the self-portrait one - I always try to do the glasses reflection thing, but it never works as well as that :D

Some AMAZING SHOTS!

Jarhead - I LOVE your first paint photo. It could easily be an album cover or something. I would happily have that on my wall at home too :)

Gloriosa - WOW! The shot with the umbrellas... Stunning to say the least!

Anyway, I went on a mission with my bodygua- I mean friend the other night to a popular dogging spot in the area (lmao) which happens to have a really cool factory that you can get reasonably close up too. Have to be careful in an area such as this when you have a camera and a tripod lmao.

Sorry about the quality in some of the pics. It was so bloody cold and my hands were shaking cause I were trying to hold my dog on the leash at the same time.
