Well yes, after all those rubbish pics taken with rubbish digital camera, it was a big change I had to get used to for a long time:D but I love it, and use this: http://www.alfacomp.cz/php/product.php?eid=10514507J1LS295F1N - it's actually one of the cheaper lens out there (and so is my actual SLR) but since I'm still an amateur, I'm happy with it. Anyway, after some time, I'm planning to buy better one.

Ah, yes, sure it is a bargain, but you can't really go wrong with Nikkors :tmb: I'm sure VR is also very useful at the long end, unfortunately my telelens hasn't got that...

I also recently got a new camera, DSLR, but the reason I haven't posted anything yet is because I shot everything in RAW and guess what - my computer is too crappy to properly handle them :vlol:
So yeah give me some time to look at them, and I'll post when done :p

Can you zoom in that close with most cameras? I would like to take some decent pictures of flowers that close but it always blurs out, even on microscopic, I must be doing something wrong, I'm a noob :cln:

You can however you'll need a macro lens or a camera that has one built in.

My Dad and I used to go fishing on this very lake and talk about 'stuff'.
When I made this shot I thought it was a quaint father and son image:http://takeme.home.comcast.net/~takeme/gallery/images/fallfishing.jpg
Now that he's gone when I look at it I weep, and realize I've underestimated the true power of a photograph.
I miss you, Dad.

He was really quite tame, as long as you had something for him. This is the time they try to gather all their nuts for the winter, so if you had nuts, they'd come to you.
The original image had a hand in it... May clarify some things :p

I also like it how the white balance is handled..hmm, take some more pics tomorrow in natural light.

This first shot is as if you are turning onto my street to go down it and the rest continue down the street. I didn't take pics of all the house just ones that I thought had a lot of lights and cool decorations.

As you say, using a tripod would have been a good idea to prevent the blur, or you could have upped the ISO perhaps - not sure how your camera handles high ISO.
I think for some pictures it might have been good if you got a little closer, like almost into the middle of the decorations rather than just take the pictures from an onlooker's perspective.

But they're nice :) Especially the first one I think breathes a certain atmosphere, even though it is maybe a little too dark.

Rivendell, having a 400D, perhaps you could advise TRenTIs about the 450D (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=3364876&postcount=2069) - if it's still valid? I know nothing about Canon :p

Nice pics :tmb: At around 50mm you must've gotten pretty close to all those animals, or are they cropped?

Rivendell
11-01-09, 18:29
Out of the ones on my DA page only the fox, chimps and the left hand side of the Penguin was cropped due to a ruddy great bar being in the way.

But the zoo was empty when I went, and nobody was around to stop us getting really close to them. I was less than 1ft away from the penguin and the gibbon.
It was a totally amazing experience being so close to them!

Hey everyone. I'm thinking of buying a sophisticated camera to use. I have my eyes on the CANON EOS 450D. Is this a good camera? Does anyone know of a better camera?

The 400D is excellent, so I imagine the 450D will also be very good. I've never used one, so without hands on experience I'm afraid I can't be much more help than that!

Really lovely pictures everyone... But, I must admit the dog one got me at first sight. It's so beautiful :D

Anyways, I wanted to add some of my own, mostly crappy ones, since those I wanted to post surprisingly disappeared from my PC

From this one all I can say is, I really wanted to see how the image would turn out having the focus on the eyes, and then on the nose. But certainly my dog doesn't love that I take pictures of her, and the minute I got the first one she started moving her head so I had to finally let her go :p

Hmm guys, do any of you know how to take photos like these? they don't
have to be on such a big scale:

http://pushinglight.com/images/20061210192934_movinglight.jpg

I managed to take one of a rotating disco ball, but thats it... any help would be appriciated.

Rivendell
28-02-09, 10:20
Yep, that's a long exposure shot.
Probably between a 5 and 10 second exposure

Usually with long exposure shots it takes in as much light as possible and you can end up with a brighter shot when it's nighttime (and especially daytime) . That makes me think that photo was taken with a low iso.

Dark Lugia 2
28-02-09, 10:35
Ah, thanks! Its for my art project, if I cant find how to use low iso I think I'm gonna have to find out how to take a long exposure shot then...

Rivendell
28-02-09, 10:37
It completely depends on your camera I guess. :tmb:

Dark Lugia 2
28-02-09, 11:13
Hehe :p And thanks a lot for the help, I found the settings, exposure only goes up to +2 on mine, so I did that and turned the iso down, hopefully at night today I'll be able to take some shots like above by wiggling the camera during capture or something similar, thanks! :D

Punaxe
28-02-09, 12:53
What camera do you have? The key is indeed long exposure, and to make sure that during that exposure you don't get too much light at once, so either a low ISO, a small diaphragm, or even a filter. And, very important, a way to keep your camera still during the exposure :p Use a tripod or put it on some other steady object.

Some pictures I took during a hike last wednesday. Didnt go for the 'art & composition' shots, I just wanted to capture some of the beauty of the area. You hike for 4-5 hours, past 4 waterfalls, losts of climbing and some jumping. It was fun!

Starting out, there is a cement pathway with a few different gardens, like the 'wetlands' and 'forest' area etc. you walk through.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh254/tomkatty2/HAROLD/100_8798.jpg

Then you start the easy part of the hike:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh254/tomkatty2/HAROLD/100_8842.jpg

And then the fun part, you have to rent a key to go through the gate and into the forest.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh254/tomkatty2/HAROLD/100_8950.jpg

The 'dead end' is a surprisingly small waterfall, very serene - my hike buddy couldnt make it to the end, so excuse the shameless self-portrait:

Ah, well. Seeing there're lots of photogrophers, good ones, round here I suppose I can try to find some advice or share some of my low-quality works here in the forum.

Since I haven't got a pro camera, all of the following photos were taken by my cell phone :p I hope you like them.

These are from one of my Myspace folders, namely Scenery (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=440166784&albumId=826030)...

They don't show up this thread but there's definitely some nice ones in those albums. Clearly you already pay attention to composition et cetera which is pretty much the first thing, which I think in most people just comes natural. If it doesn't, photography may not be for you :p So that's good. I would say, look at your own pictures, and ask yourself what you do and what you do not like about each of them, and most importantly why. That way you see what you can do again, what you can do better, and what you should not be doing next time.

Hehe
Thanks

Yeah, regarding the languages, I can get the basic idea of what a dutch sentence or person is talking about, but its a bit weird :) lol
Afrikaans is a bit weird.

On that sign they made a spelling mistake too... the 'passop' and 'pasop' part.
Its the same word!

...and I love how they have to tell you leopards, snakes & baboons can be dangerous. :o

Accents similar to Afrikaans evolve here, but we don't let them talk like that officially... :p That's why it's funny, it's similar to the kind of accent that we would use to imitate some typical foreigners or low-educated people. No offense. :p

So for my photo class we had to take a picture of something and then sepia tone it and hand color it. This is with film not computers :p.
p.s. I couldn't really get in the top right area because I had to use a q-tip to put the paint on it and that is too big to go in between the branches.

Alright I still promised you guys pics from my trip to Boston... It took me this long because I don't like the pictures. When I don't like them, I don't feel like taking any effort for them... And selecting a few for upload requires some effort. :p They're just generic snapshots, that's all. Anyway, here goes then...

Boston:

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5111.jpg

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_4942.jpg

Lots of high buildings that I as a Dutchman am not used to... :p

Hardly any nature to be found, it was a surprise to find a few trees crammed in between some skycrapers...

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5049.jpg

With the exception of course of those areas that were specifically reserved for nature which I have to commend the city for, although even there, there's no escaping the buildings.

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5223.jpg

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5213.jpg

Luckily the city also knew some really nice neighbourhoods, with significantly less floors per building and very enjoyable architecture.

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5388.jpg

http://files.noctifer.net/boston/DSC_5165.jpg

All in all not a city I'd choose to live in, unless I had some very good reason - like being admitted to MIT :p

The conference was pretty boring and useless for someone like me. Definitely not worth the money (450 USD entrance, plus of course flight and hotel). The main thing there is networking, and I just haven't got much of that to do yet :p

Some speakers...

And then there's me... :o

Yeah, it is pretty good actually - they are all right if you are like me and can't spend 900 on a decent macro lens. You have to make sure you are close enough to the subject however - it is the same principle of holding a magnifying glass in front of you and looking at something in the distance.

These photos were taken on the Porthtowan - Chapel Porth footpath which is about 6 miles away from where I live. (Cornwall) I'm lucky I Iive so near the coast though I'd love to get a better camera so I can really do the scenery justice :)

English scenery is one of the reasons I'm contemplating moving to England after my studies :D
Make sure to keep us updated if you ever get that better camera :p I'm probably buying a new one soon, but then the same model that I had earlier... Which got stolen. :(
