View Full Version : No opening cut-scene

Hey, I recently installed Tomb Raider 3 on my computer. It seemed to install fine, and when I play it, it goes very well, too, but when I begin the game, I don't see an opening cut-scene. Also, there's no Eidos or Core Design "cut-scenes" either. It just goes straight onto the main menu. When I play the PS version, I see the Eidos and Croe Design "Cut-scenes", and the opening cut-scene for the game, but not on the PC version. Is this normal? Can I downland a patch or something for it? It doesn't really bother me much, but I'd just like to know what's up with it. Thanks in advance. :)

No that is not normal.
However, on a system with a hyperthreaded CPU and XP installed, these two intro movies freeze right after they started so you'd have to skip them.
Do you know what CPU you have?

You can of course try the patch (tr3 updater) on this page (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp2.html).
Do NOT use compatibility mode on TR3 after you patched.!!!

I tried the patch, but it didn't work. I still didn't see any opening cut-scenes. I even tried re-installing TR3, but it still has just the same problem.
I'm not too good at understanding computer information, but it says on the General part of the System Properties this:

Packard Bell Computer
Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R)
4 CPU 3.06GHz
1.59 GHz, 192 MB of Ram.

Did you configure your gfx/sound settings before playing TR3? I could be mistaken but I think there was an option to disable FMV playback. Simply make sure it is enabled. ;)

I already checked that, but I couldn't find anything regarding to disabling FMVs. Thanks anyway, though.

So, I take it there's not much I can do about my problem except put up with it? :/

Da tomb raider, you have sold out version ;)
BTW, do you have problems only with start movie?
Joseph, does sold out TR3 has all the movies?

Joseph

I can't rule out they don't exist on a part of the Sold Out versions... can't check i don't have a Sold Out version of TR3. :(

da tomb raider!
10-10-06, 12:52
Yes, it is the $old-Out version of Tomb Raider 3. I don't understand why it isn't working, though. I also have the $old-Out version of Tomb Raider 2, 4, 5 and 6, and they work fine (The gameplay, sounds, cut-scenes, etc).
I looked in the folder for TR3, but I can't find anything regarding any cut-scenes. So far, I don't know if they're any other cut-scenes in TR3 which don't play. I haven't got that far yet. Maybe I'll try it later.

Could you post printscreens of the contentes of your CD. Make sure you have extensions visible (Control Panel > Folder Options > View > untick "Hide extensions for known file types".
Make the printscreens in "Details View".

Post the contents of the overview of CD,
then the Data folder
cuts folder
fmv folder.

Oh, and only your first picture is relevant. The others are the same as my original CD.

Ok, in details view, I have two pictures showing the whole contents of my Tomb Raider 3 disc. There wasn't enough space to put it all on one picture, but I made 100% sure that the pictures show all of the discs contents.

OK. Here is mine. TR3 original, Premier Collection.

http://www.jozefdekkers.nl/Trforum/Trclassic/tr3-contents-cd-overview.gif

I think your CD is all right. But it contains a lot of the the Sold Out software.
You didn't tell how you installed the game, but it is best to not install the SoldOut software, but this way: Put in CD on your player "D", Explore CD... doubleclick autorun.exe. The TR3 menu should appear, click the Install button.

If you want to try again:

uninstall TR3
Use trrc.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/trrc.exe) TR Registry Cleaner will remove all game settings left behind after uninstalling TR games. In the tool, select TR3.
Re-install TR3 following above method.
Apply patch:(tr3 updater) on this page (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp2.html). Download, unzip. Then run the updater.
Do NOT use compatibility mode on TR3.!!!
Navigate to Start > All Programs > Core Design > Tomb Raider 3 > Setup to select your preferences, then hit OK button, game should launch.
Next time always launch the game from the shortcut via Start > All Programs > Core Design > Tomb Raider 3 > Play shortcut.

No, still no luck. I did exactly what you told me to do in the order you gave me, but it just didn't seem to make a difference. I can't really think of what to do any more. Nothing seems to be working. Maybe I'll just have to get a new copy of it, which isn't from $old-Out. Here's my set-up for TR3. Maybe it'll help?

Disable Dither and AGP Mem.

For sounddriver you have a Wave. Try to select that (in the dropdownbox) instead of primary sounddriver.

Select a resolution according to your desktop: 1024 x 768 (16 bit) .

da tomb raider!
12-10-06, 20:05
The set-up isn't saving the setting I'm trying to make it do.

Joseph
12-10-06, 20:10
Yes it is! ;)

You do this only once. Then hit TEST. If successfull then click OK to start the game. Next time you click the Play shortcut these settings should still be applied. But each time you open Setup again, the settings will immediately drop back to default.

da tomb raider!
13-10-06, 13:03
No, still not FMVs... But here's something. After the screen below disappears, a dark black screen appears, followed by a slightly lighter black screen, followed by the same dark black screen, followed again by the slightly lighter black screen, before going onto the main menu. I'm not sure, but maybe, for some reason, it's canceling in first 2 FMVs (The Eidos and Core FMV, which are both one, and the first TR3 FMV, in Antarctica.).

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/7879/6wf6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Joseph
13-10-06, 17:55
Yes. The movies you are missing normally play after the screen you posted, when you see the darker and slightly lighter black screens swapping. So it tries, but can't do it apparently.
But the FMV's in the game, they do play?

da tomb raider!
13-10-06, 18:08
No. I used level skip to get to the FMV with Dr Willard in it, but it's the same thing as it is with the other begining ones. The cut-scenes work though (Cut-scenes like the one with Tony in it).

Joseph
13-10-06, 18:14
But you used our TR3 patch. The updater. Which makes sure that the fmv's play. :pi:

Yes, and make sure you select it all.

I did the patch the way you told me too, but it still didn't work. The different shades of black screens came up again twice. I also did the set-up options again, just in case.

Joseph
13-10-06, 18:36
We have to study your cd again, comparing with mine... :pi:

da tomb raider!
13-10-06, 18:42
Studying closely, I'm sure my CD has everything your CD has, with a few extra things. It's all the same size, too. I can't find anything different from the two.

Just a thought (sorry if this has already been brought up as I haven't bothered to read every single post in this thread).

The TR3 updater does copy the FMV DLLs into your game folder but probably didn't remove the ones left in C:\Windows\System32. At least that's what happened with my TR2 installation after using the patch updater for it. Therefore I made sure to remove the DLLs from the System32 folder to ensure that the game really uses the new ones copied into its own folder. This might help your issue...

da tomb raider!
15-10-06, 16:40
Still no FMVs. I downloaded it (uvga3_376.zip), but it hasn't seemed to have changed anything. Again, I checked the set-up, but nothing helped. The same black screens came up again.

Joseph
15-10-06, 16:43
Run the game in 16-bit. In game's setup change to 16-bit.

da tomb raider!
15-10-06, 16:50
Still exactly the same.
The resolution should be 1024x768 High Colour (16 Bit), right?

Joseph
15-10-06, 16:51
Not should but could. Try a lower resolution?

da tomb raider!
15-10-06, 17:01
Nothing from 640x480 High Colour (16 Bit) to 1024x768 High Colour (16 Bit) work. Should I try the other resolutions?

Joseph
15-10-06, 17:13
Uncheck all options in setup, and then try. :)

da tomb raider!
15-10-06, 17:15
On the 1024x768 High Colour (16 Bit) resolution, it still doesn't work. Maybe on another resolution?

da tomb raider!
17-10-06, 14:26
The FMVs don't display on any resolution, with ZBuffer, Dither, Bilinear, and Use AGP Mem unchecked.
This is what's in the Tomb Raider III folder.

17-10-06, 14:49
Other games run fine and complete with FMV's?

Is it possible for you to buy a new TR3 which is not a SoldOut version for a 3 or 4 bucks?

da tomb raider!
17-10-06, 14:54
All my other $old-Out Tomb Raider games (TR 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.)work fine (Gameplay and FMVs, etc.).
I haven't seen any other versions of Tomb Raider 3 which aren't a $old-Out version, but maybe I can find one online or something.

Joseph

This year Eidos released a six-pack TR's 1 - 6, for 10,-

Of course! It is released by Eidos. If it is available in Netherlands, why wouldn't it in UK / USA. :)
