View Full Version : TR1 Freezes on Saving 50% of Time

Hi,

I am playing Tomb Raider 1, installed after creating cd as directed by Lord Icon on http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=51167, using Glidos version 1.32 and VDM Sound Version 2.10.0. Installed with installer TR1setup and all went normally. I am using a Game Elements wireless controller which has its own mapping software that works good.

Everything runs good and looks good, except that half of the time, when saving, the game freezes up. I would click the save option, the book opens up, I move right to save option, I select the file I want to save to, the file closes and then freezes.

Following is a diagnostic of my pc.....

Is there way to make the save continue or unfreeze by clicking a few keys, or is there a fix, or has this happened to any others.

Thanx is advance,

Hi Joseph,

Thanks. I eventually had to install setaffinity.zip after a few trial and errors.
Seems to work so far.
:jmp:

I tried to manual set the affinity for the ntvdm.exe to CPU 0 as suggested (a temporary fix for each instance you start and play the game, to be redone each time you play) for a trial to see if it works, but I could not mininmize my game window and in trying to do so, I kept corrupting the game play, making it so that I had to restart the game, even having to manually shut down the pc a few times.

The keyboard hot keys would not work for the game, windows key plus the m or d key to minimize would only mess up the game. These short cuts did work on folders and web pages, but not the game.

So I read up on the file, installed, and set the infinity of the vdmsound dos driver to CPU 0 and seem to not have the problem so far.

If that doesn't work, which in writing this seems like that would not be the fix since I am using Glidos and not Dgvoodoo, I will set the Glidos.exe to CPU 0 instead.

Anyway I saved the game a half of a dozen times with no ill effects. Since it is getting late tonight and I have to work early tomorrow, I will give it a go tomorrow and continue saving a lot to see if my saves freeze up or not.

Thanks and the regards to the corrupt files, I just saved over them and they work good.

If anything I wrote does not seem correct and if it seems I am working on an instance of coinsidence, thinking that I corrected my problem, let me know and I will correct it tomorrow. :cln:

Good Night,
daljaxon

Joseph

Ehmm.. it works 100% for DgVoodoo, but don't think it is useful to set affinity for Glidos.exe. It is ntvdm.exe that needs the affinity.

It is a known fact that the Windows 'minimize' hotkeys causes crash, freezing, anything you don't want.

Anyway, sort it out tomorrow and report back. :)

How do you set the ntvdm.exe if you can't minimize? Where do I find the ntvdm.exe while the game is not playing? After starting Glidos, you are giving an option to play with full screen or not. Leaving this box unchecked and starting the game, I can move the windowed game to a side and I am then able to open Task Manager from the status bar. Ntvdm.exe is displayed in the running processors window then.

When I tried to install using dgvoodoo, the graphics didn't seem to be real good, but I will reinstall if I still have problems using dgvoodoo.

"""Updated""'
My mistake, I did a search and found that ntvdm.exe is located in system32 folder. I set the affinity on this, hopefully correct, and see if I have any problems. I faith it will.

Thanks,

Using Glidos, I was able to run the game good untill the spinning logo. Still runs good, but of course the spinning logo is anoying, until I am able to purchase it anyway.

So in trying to use DgVooDoo I ran into a slew of problems.

Game starts, spinning clickable options are small on screen in upper left hands side, ok, I can work with this,
Start new game, no movie scene, ok, I continue...
Start off first part with half of graphics blacked out and at first no Laura, then I was wrong, Laura is in background, looks like she is set up as background and the landscape is in the foreground.

I'll read up on web site and see if there are adjustments to be made.

Yes. Open DgVoodooSetup. Select the DOS platform! On the Global tab, at W-Buffering select "Emulate".

Thanks Joseph, before I read your post, I did just that. The setup on Dgvoodoo did not stay on Dos mode, but all the other changes stayed the same.

I opened up the setup on DgVoodoo, selected dos platform, on Global tab, selected screen bit depth at 32, on Glide Tab, selected Direct3D Texture Bit Depth at 32, selected Emulate W-Buffering.

I recieved a normal Laura & Background screen except Half of it was blacked out, untill I moved around and the blacked out area moved around into different views.

***Later....
I checked DgVoodoo setup, it had reverted back to Windows Platform, but all the other changes remained. I will try again.

***Later still...
No good, all plays well so far, but still half of background is still blacked out.

DgVoodoo setup always opens in Windows Platform by default.
You always have to select DOS platform first.

You have no graphic card; on you PC the integrated Intel graphic chip must do all the work.
Update yout graphic chip's drivers from this page (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2102&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21).

Tried a number of different things, nothing worked. Everytime I set the setup to Dos Platform and click ok, I reopen it and it has reverted back to Windows platform. By chance that I could be wrong, I chose Dos Platform again clicked ok, then ran the game, again half of the screen is blacked out. So I reopened the DgVoodoo setup and it showed to be back in Windows platform.

Is there something I am missing?

I will try Global tab, different display driver settings tomorrow and see if this makes a difference. I think I need to go to bed before my wife disowns me. She is starting to think I have two mistresses, My PC & Laura. Hee Hee

Anway, night.......zzzz

Hmmm, thought I had all the update drivers...
My oversight, thanks, I will install.

***Later...
I installed new driver, there were no difference in the blacked out areas, but now the game play is choppy, Laura freezes for a second or two every fourth step (aprox).

I am & will set the DgVoodoo to Dos everytime I open or reopen the game. I thought you meant that it is installed in Windows Platform and all I had to do was change it to Dos Platform and it would remain that way. I will make sure I set that before each game. But I still have problems as before with the added choppiness. I did notice my desktop resolution had changed, I will change this tomorrow and continue on trying to see if I can get this to work.

Thanks for your help so far,

You do not have to set the DgVoodoo options each time aljaxond, what Joseph meant was it will open to the windows settings by default every time you open the program, change it to the dos settings and make any adjustments you need to there. If you reopen it the settings you changed should still be there, you do not need to do it each time you play. To set the affinity on ntvdm.exe to CPU 0 manually all l used to do was start the game, leave it on the loading screen press the windows button (beween Ctrl and Alt) set the affinity, go back to the game, go to Lara's home usually because the graphics were stuffed up and then go back to the loading screen and load my game, sometime if you are quick the graphics will not stuff up, but l usually loaded the home level first just to be sure, they always seemed to go back to normal when l returned to the loading screen

Thanks for your input aussie500,

In regards to the DgVoodoo setup, all the settings do remain the same, just I misunderstood and thought that the radio button option Dos platform would remain the same and it hasn't. So, if I am understanding everyone, the dos settings remain, even though I reopen the DgVoodoo setup right after I set it and the platform is back to windows. Then that is not the problem and I have to find it elsewhere.

On minimizing the screen, that is pushing the Windows Logo Button, this did not work. As stated by Joseph, it just messed up everything, causing mishap and once a manual restart of the pc. That is the screen would not minimize so I can get to the task manager, the game/program would just flicker and strobe.

I did use the program for setting the affinity, and set the windows/system32/ntvdm.exe to CPU0, so this is not a problem anymore.

I will take your advice about going to Laura's Home and then onto the game.

D

aussie500
11-10-06, 13:03
You only really need to go to Lara's home if you set the affinity each time you play, because minimising the game seems to have such a bad effect on it, it frequently becomes unplayable if you load a game straight away. If you minimise the game you must be on the initial loading screen before you have loaded a game or the game will crash anyway. If you are using DgVoodo are you using the shortcut the advance installer put on the desktop? And which version of DgVoodoo are you using, l tried the latest one (a while back now) and it was a complete disaster (l had onboard graphics at the time) ended up going back to the 1.4 version. Joseph would know which was the best to use though, he is an expert :D

Both 1.31 and 1.40+ work on my PC's.

Crash and Savegame corruptions in TR1 on dual-core or Hyperthreaded Intel CPU's

Problem: your CPU is a hyperthreaded or dual core Intel CPU, and Tomb Raider 1 on DgVoodoo sometimes/quite often crashes when saving, causing a corrupt savegame.
You have installed TR1 on XP exactly following these instructions (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1.html), (installed VDMSound 2.10, rebooted, installed TR1 using the Advanced Installer, enabled DgVoodoo).

SOLUTIONS:
- The manual fix (to do each time after launching the game):
When you launched the game, minimize (Windows key), open Windows Task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), on the Processes tab find ntvdm.exe, right-click on it, select Affinity, set affinity to CPU0 only.

- Permanent fix:
Download and install: setaffinity.zip (http://www.jozefdekkers.nl/Trforum/Computer/setaffinity.zip)
You only have to run this little tool once, set the affinity for ntvdm.exe to CPU 0, and it will be applied permanently.

(You will find ntvdm.exe in the WINDOWS\system32 folder).

Setaffinity maintains this setting invisibly on the background: even after a reboot and launching the game the normal dgvoodoo way, you can see that the affinity is still set to CPU 0 only. :tmb:

Is there a process to install another dgvoodoo over the version installed with the installer. I tried ver 1.4, but the start screen froze each time. I tried ver 1.4 by copying the filies in the folder after unzipping and letting them replace like files in the TOMBRAID file.

Anyway, what could be causing the black out on half the the backgroud? Does anyone know?

Is it possible to upload pictures from my pc to this forum to show what I am talking about?

I bet if I spend 1 1/2 C-Notes and install a GeForce 6600 graphics card, I might be able to fix this problem, you think?

Yes i'll explain.
-Installer will install DgVoodoo 1.31
-download DgVoodoo 1.40+ from this page, the website of dege (http://dege.freeweb.hu/). (take 1.40+, not the 1.50 beta), and extract.
-Copy and paste the following files over the existing ones in TOMBRAID (select Yes to replace):
GLIDE2X.DLL
GLIDE2X.OVL
DGVOODOOSETUP.EXE
DGVOODOO.EXE
DGVESA.COM

DMost certainly! And i recommend you build in a real graphic card. GF 6600 GT (mind the GT!) is a fine card at low price.

Thanks Joseph,

I figured it would be that easy. I followed your directions. There were no change in the blacked out areas. I tried loading the game from the icon on the desk top and then the tomb.exe in TOMBRAID folder.
I haven't been able to get the full graphics using dgvoodoo. Comparably, I think that the spinning logo is better than the blacked out graphics, so I will switch back to Glidos unless someone has a better suggestion.
I played with changing settings on the DgVoodoo setup with no better results.

I appreciate all of your help,

Ok, I reset the DgVoodoo setup and it did not make a difference.

Playing with the DgVoodoo made me realize what my original confusion of setting the Platform. The buttons actually act as folder tabs, allowing me to change needed parameters in the Windows Platform and then in the Dos Platform, not actually setting the program for only one. I see how it works now and will note in the future that I should play with a program for a bit before posting questions about it. Of course the only setting that made a difference was Emulating W-Buffering.

D1. So you put in the changes i posted in RED and that made no difference?
2. ONLY the settings you make in the DOS platform matter. TR1 is a DOS game; so the Windows Platform plays no role whatsoever. DgVoodoo is a tool for many old (DOS as well as Windows-) games.
3. You are usiong DGV1.40, i have 1.31 installed.
4. Your problem will be solved with a real graphic card like the 6600GT.

Thanks very much for the pictures. :tmb: That explains a lot, I have seen this phenomenon before, i think on my own PC (?), long ago. Don't remember the what and why atm... but it will come.

FIRST: Your passport screen is normal. That is not "option circle", and the circle belongs at the left side.

It is a bit uneasy for me you have version 1.40+ installed instead of 1.31 as i have...
But i try.

Hi Joseph,

I applied all the settings that you suggested but, the W-buffering method = Force true W-buffering only gave the option of selecting or unselecting. I unselected the option turning off the Force W-Buffering. There was no emulate w-buffering option that I know of.

There were no change in the graphics.

If it would be easier for you to help, I can reinstall using the default dgvoodoo that comes with the installer and try again. I used the ver 1.4 because of the same problem I am still experiencing.

I think I will anyway.

Hey, if we can't get this to work, there is still the purchasing option with Glidos, I just hate to give up on this when there may be a solution. I don't like giving up on things. But I do waste a lot of time at times. But still, there is this satisfaction when you are able to get things running properly.

Anyway, I am rambling, time to post.

The main problem is you have onboard Intel graphics chip instead of a real graphics card. I can only guess what it does and not does.

No, you keep 1.40, and i'll instll 1.40 here, that is better i was going to reverse to 140 anyway. its an improved version.

daljaxon
13-10-06, 02:12
Cool, Ok

I kept forgetting to ask and I don't know if this means anything but, everytime I install the game I get an error popup...

"An error has occured while trying to copy INSTALLT.EXE"

This did not cause a problem with Glidos, but do you think this might contribute to this cause?

Anyway, sorry I did not mention this earlier.

The Advanced Installer is supposed to solve that. You have a CD version that has the "T" extra.

Why don't you have a Tomb Raider (Glide) icon on desktop? You should have. How else do you launch the game?

Could you post your updated report please.

Ahhhh...., I see,

I moved it to a folder that I keep files in that I store unused files when I am trying different ideas. Like when I tried Glidos again, but I find that it doesn't matter if I move the file off the desk top or not. Which at that time, I must have ran the diagnose program.

Question:
Does the installer install anything to the registery?

I didn't think it did on TR1 since the TRRC deletes files from TR2 and up.

Updated Diagnoses coming next.

I didn't answer a question you asked a few posts ago, sorry.

I launch the game by the shortcut on the desktop and sometimes by the tomb.exe in the TOMBRAID folder when I am adjusting the Ggvoodoo setup.

There is something wrong. In your first Diagnose report you had no VLP file on Desktop, but one in TOMBRAID. Today you have no VLP file in TOMBRAID but one on Desktop. Did you just move it? That's not the way.

When you install TR1 the right way, you'll have a .vlp file in TOMBRAID as well one on Desktop.

No, I did not pull any file out of the TOMBRAID file. I did add save files, but that was about it.

Tell you what, I will delete the TOMBRAID file and then the shortcut on desktop and reinstall again.

Because of this problem I am having, I have uinstalled and reinstall a few times. I renamed old TOMBRAID files so that I didn't have to delete them and so I can go back to them again if needed to.

I presume that the TOMBRAID files are not tied into the registry or any other windows folder or program. Is this presumption false?

When I get back home I will look into it further.

That presumption is correct.
You can remove TOMBRAID folder or rename it. Always remove the TOMBPATH.TXT file, if it exists.

Tombpath.txt? Where would it be located if it exists?

Joseph

On C:\

You may leave it there, normally. But before a reinstall of TR1, remove it first (if it exists).

It seems that I did not run the diagnose program before I renamed the folder and plugged the TOMBRAID file with glidos back in. You were seeing the glidos folder, I apologize for this. I was showing my wife the difference between both programs. Following is the TOMBRAID file with DgVoodoo 1.4 in the diagnose text.

Let's try something else: treat your graphic chip as if it were an ATI card. You would be playing with VDD mode DISabled.
That means reinstalling.

Delete or rename TOMBRAID
Have the TR1 cd in your cd-player "E".
Launch The Advanced Installer.
Select Tomb Raider Original. Yes to DgVoodoo, yes to let installer configure soundcard, make the selections the ATI card user should do, yes to icons on desktop. Finish.
You will find 2 icons on desktop: http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/images/installati.gif
To launch the game, first doubleclick "Disable VDD Mode. Then doubleclick Tomb Raider (Glide).

Hi Joseph,

I had tried this once before as one of the other options and had the same results. But I tried it again, had the same results again, but I did notice that the graphics seemed sharper, clearer. Seemed to anyway.

Running Glidos has great results and I don't have the black out problems, if this makes any difference. As I said earlier, if push comes to shove, I can pay the measly $10 and use Glidos, but I'd like to give Dege's software a chance. I decided to try his beta 1.5 version, but this did not do any better either.

And thanks, I wasn't aware of the "screen capturing on" option. This sure helps in getting screen shots, I was using my print screen button on keyboard and to get all the shots I wanted, I had to continue closing and restarting the game get the shot and make the cycle again.

I'd like to go back to a previous question/concern. Just in case this may be another clue to fixing this problem besides purchasing a graphics card, which I will anyway, but can't just yet.

I mentioned that in the Passport Screen and in any other screen during game play, the "Option Circle (I'll use this term for lack of better discription)," is in the upper left side. Please let me know what I should call this circle.

You wrote,
FIRST: Your passport screen is normal. That is not "option circle", and the circle belongs at the left side.

On game play with Glidos and PS1, this Circle is in the middle of the screen. It is no big deal, but when I try to load a save file, half of the load file is hid off the top of the left side of the screen. I would think that this is because the Circle is not located in the correct place and maybe, might be a clue into my problem. Of course I could be wrong, but I thought this might be worth mentioning. See the picture following that show what I am talking about...

Yes what your picture shows is absolutely rediculous, i agree.

http://www.jozefdekkers.nl/Trforum/Trclassic/tr1-passportscreen.jpg

The Passportscreen as it should be. What's in the centre, is the passport.

What you show in your picture is the same screen before the passport appears. On the PC version of TR1, the circle is not an option circle and is not supposed to be in the centre.

Hi,

I tried settings you gave me. I had reinstalled and used the Disable VDD Mode and then updated with DgVoodoo ver 1.4 when the default 1.31 showed no improvement.

There were no difference. Following is the settings on my setup.

Another question.
The settings that follow an Asterik (*), how do I change them? I do not see any visible means of doing so.

(*Depth buffering)
*W-buffering method = Force true W-buffering <--- make emulate
*Depth and color buffer bit depth are equal (c,t)

There was no area to change this setting.

Oh sorry. In 1.40+, just uncheck "Force W-Buffering". I see you already did that.

But could you enable VESA support this time please.

And:
Fix TR1's shadow-problem = Disabled <---make that enabled.

Textures bit depth 32 bit!
Screen shots = Enabled! (you want that)

With the settings listed in last post, there were no change in the blackout background and now the graphics are not crisp and clear. Little choppy.

Hmm... very annoying. When will you be buying that GF 6600 GT? ;)

Where do I change this at? This is not showing on the setup screen, is this another one that is controlled by another setting?
I thought that would be changed automatically, according to when both screen- and colour depth settings are changed to 32 bit. Apparently not. :pi:

Unfortunately not very soon. Have other things more pressing right now. With a family of 7 you can only afford so much.
I'd like to get it not only for this application, but also I found Indiana Jones Emperors Tomb recently that I can't play because of the graphic card capabilities that would be fixed with installing the GF 6600 GT.

Might just go ahead and pay the $10 for Glidos for now.

Thanks again for all your help.

A pity! :( Yes you have higher financial priorities of course.

BUT. TR1 and Indiana Jones do not require a card of the GF6600GT class
(like Gigabyte 6600GT ,128MB GDDR3 PCI-Express (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=319940&view=detailed) £82.00 / € 115,00).
I only mentioned that one because when you invest, might as well take a card that can handle DirectX9 games really fine.
But if you are mainly interested in TR1 and DirectX5 to 8 games, cheaper cards would suffice very well.

Like a
XFX GeForce 7300GT 256MB DDR2, 350Mhz, PCI-Express (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=322561&view=detailed)£69.00 / € 99,00
or a
Sapphire Radeon X1300 256MB DDR2, PCI-Express (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=314137&view=detailed) £48.00 / € 65,00 :)

Cheaper cards on that page are a waste of money (despite what the sales-promotional text might promise). Don't take any card with 'Turbo Cache' (nVidia) or 'Hypermemory' (ATI).

My little suggestion :)
If you want to buy a new graphics card - buy 7600GS instead of 6600GT, it should be cheaper and it's about 5% faster.

P.S. I have 6600GT :)

Right. Good point Zebius. :tmb: But still it is in the same price-category...
Point of View GeForce 7600GS 256MB DDR2 ,PCI-Express (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=319351) 75.00 / 110,00

In the case of daljaxon, to play older games and TR1 to TR6, he would be well served with an old GF3 Ti 200, if he could get one second hand... for 10 or 20 bucks.

Thanks for the advice Zebius, I will keep this in mind if I have the choice at the time of purchase.

And Joseph, in quoting you...,

In the case of daljaxon, to play older games and TR1 to TR6, he would be well served with an old GF3 Ti 200, if he could get one second hand... for 10 or 20 bucks.

Will the older GF3 Ti 200 support the graphice requirements listed below?

Indiana Jones and the Emperors Tomb
Graphics Card: 32 MB 3D graphics card with hardware transform and lighting (T&L) capability

Yes, certainly. Btw, I have that card myself in my oldest PC. :) It has 64 MB and supports T&L via hardware.

EDIT: oh, wait: it is an AGP card, not PCI-Express... does your motherboard have an AGP slot?

EDIT2: no, i see: YOUR GATEWAY PC (http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/GTModels/5394/5394sp3.shtml)

EDIT 3: But you could look at eBay for a second hand GF 6600GT, because many gamers sold it after upgrading.

EDIT 4: forget that. I found only 2, and they were too expensive: €50,- is too much for a second hand if you consider shipping would come on top of it.

Yes, I think my pc is only a year old, I bought it from a local electonics store called Circuit City in February on sale for $1000. What is that, about 800 Euro's or 540 Pounds?

First time I ever messed with a motherboard with SATA drives, makes adding hard drives so much easier.

I missed a chance to buy a 250Gb hard drive for $55 or 44 Euro or 30 Pounds form another place called Office Max a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: Whooops, I see you are faster than me, :)

I decided to download and install ePSXe playstation emulator and configured it to run my PS1 TR1. The emulator runs better than I thought it would.
