View Full Version : Which are the worst things in TR 1?
I never play it though :(..i bought TR 2 first,my country didn't sell it anymore :o
So i don't know which the worst things are..i think the hair is ugly.I don't like braids
Sorry if there's an another thread like this :(
Well there isn't that much wrong with TR I.
The graphics aren't all that good, but that's it.
Even though AOD and Legend have very good graphics, TR I still beats both of them put together.
So true Tony!
The only 'fault' I can see with it are the graphics. But that's from others P.o.v's , personally I have no problem with them, loads of the places still look as glorious as they did back in 96! True classic that game :tmb:
I don't really not like anything about Tr1, it's all good to me.
I can see NO problems with TR1, the only prob is the graphics but it was released in 1996 after all. So, yes there is NOTHING wrong with TR1.
TR1 for me is totally flawless, great game :tmb:
Btw Ivan, try looking on e-bay for all TR games, they have them all :)
Well, I suppose the old argument about the graphics could be made, as others have, but I find them to be part of TR1's charm. :D Would love to see it with updated graphics, still...
Also, Lara's breasts are a funny shape. ;) I prefer the TR2/3 model.

The only problem I can see with TR1 - it had an ending :(
I don't buy the graphics arguement - it is a '96 game, it was great at the time and still looks good - (well triangular boobs haha).
My only gripe is that Natla was a tad anticlimatic after the previous Boss encounter.
The graphics are the only thing I can think of, and those were awesome at the time of release. A truly great game.
like the pete said,. the only big herror tomb raider 1 have,.. mistake or whatever you want it to call,.. is that it end,.. thats the only worst thing,.. when i realice that it was going to end, i stop playing and after not being able to pass by the computer and not play it, i had to start it again from cero,. so i start tomb raider once again, and then i finished it,.. but i was really sad,.. instead of happy like in prince of persia or resident evil,.. i didnt wanted it to end,...:'(

Damn, you're good! :D
And still, the graphics were very good at the time, and back then, it wasn't possible to have better graphics than that.
There's nothing really bad in TR1. The game is awesome. And as far as the graphics are concerned, they were stunning for their time (especially if you consider that TR1 was in fact a DOS-based game). I can't think of many games of that time that had such good graphics.

I agree...
All hail TR1, it was the PERFECT game! http://www.storagebin.us/smilies/smilies/bow.gifhttp://www.storagebin.us/smilies/smilies/bow.gifhttp://www.storagebin.us/smilies/smilies/bow.gif

The only thing I don't like about this TR, is the levels with those mutants... Not because of them, just because of those levels, I can't find the TR Feeling on them.
I like the graphics of TR1.
I know they not as detailed as current standards, but because they had to use blocky, chunky bits to construct levels, the whole game has an aura of surrealism that I find appealing.
It has a feeling of being "Otherworldly"...
The music and sound effects are beautiful. The colour palette, silent tension throughout, and characters, are yum.
Natla has the most gorgeous voice (who is that actress btw, anyone know?)
Pierre and Larson are great too.
...
I tried but I really can't think of anything I don't like in TR1. I loved it from the first FMV... and still do. :D
Which are the worst things in TR 1?
That it didn't get CD's attention :(
The only thing I don't like in TR1 is like when I finish the game completly, it's like a feeling of emptiness, there's nothing new to play again, I don't how to explain, but it's like "oh, just this?"
Is it possible if TR1 graphics as same as TR Legend? :jmp:
WOW!!

you have to have glidos for retexturing but then it can look like Legend... exept for the poly count in Lara and others:tea:

In my opinion, the reason everybody finds this game flawless is that TR1 is the first game they played (in TR series) and that's what they expect from a TR. If you make the same thread in TR2 forum, you'll see a lot of complaints. But I guess (of course you can't test my claim directly) if TR2 had been the first release, the same would have happened to it, and people complained about TR1 (which would have been TR2!).
Anyway, I think a problem with TR1 is its simplicity. It is neither that difficult nor that complicated. :)

It was my 5th. TR game ;) I got it after AoD
The reason, I find TR1 'flawless' is because it amazed me that a team what has only 6 people in it, can make such a long, beautiful game and great characters. Plus the fact that it was the one, what made you forgive the blocky graphics and see it a really beautiful game and those colorful environments are pretty nice :D

YES!
Too many cooks spoil the broth, methinks.
BTW, HAPPY 17,000 POSTS TR1 Section!
:wve: :yah: :D
People complain that TRL was much too easy but IMO TR1 was the same difficulty level. The end mutant levels were as linear as anything in TRL and the end fight against Natla was very anticlimatic.
I enjoyed TR1 very much but it was not the "ideal" game that many laud it to be. It stood out compared to what was being offered at the time but was not "perfect". The story line was virtually none existence. The control system was clunky at best. I suspose being the one that has the termitity to even say anything that is negative about TR1 is going to ban me forever but someone had to say that the king is nude.

As I've said before, opinions are like bums, everones got one and if they were all the same the world would be boring. What you have to remember is the age of the game as far as the graphics go. The story? Came second to the fact it was a 3D game. The controls? Still my preffered method, give me the buttons over the stick anyday(PS player here). Half the reason I'm not a real legend fan is they fiddled with the controls.
The ending sucks @$$, but that's about it. I love the game.

Everything about TR1 is great. Technologically top-notch (for 1996 that is), simple yet effective story that integrates perfectly with the gameplay, great level design, no serious bugs. Innovative, fun, revolutionary. One of the best games ever :tmb:
Hmmm.... the soundtrack on the PC version sucks :(
But the PC Version is brilliant ;)
Download the OST from Glidos site, it works then, even though a couple of tracks are in the wrong place ;)
i dont really wanna play $10 for it :(
Know what I hate about this game that I'm scared of? The music in the Caves level after passing through the double timed doors where the dart area is and also the music at the City of Vilcabamba level in the center door where the axes swing.

Coming from a person who has always been used to analogue sticks to judge movements, I'd say the controls. I've finally got used to them now though and I'm enjoying the game much more. :D

Using fewer capital letters and some punction would make your post easier to read, K. P., but that's nothing - some people seem to type with their elbows.

The worst thing - like some have already said - was that there was an ending.
The first time I played it (in '96) took me near enough 3 months to finish. The levels seemed so long and difficult then. Suddenly the credits rolled and I couldn't believe it! All I could do was sigh. I wanted it to go on and on. :(
The only thing i dislike about Tomb Raider 1, is the gameplay speed, Lara runs so slow! But everything else is fantastic, no problem with anything else!
Sometimes I don't like the scary enemies.

Sometimes I don't like the scary enemies.
That whats Tomb Raider made of, no company should change that.
Well What I'm sayin is that none of the enemies scare me except the mummiy in Caves and the mummy in tomb of qualopec that's next to the bird gate switch.

Mummy in Caves? Where?
Mummy in Caves? Where?
It's near the golden bridge area where you first encounter the wolves. And there's also one in Tomb of Qualopec that looks exactly like the one in Caves. That mummy is near the bird gate switch in the moving block puzzle.

Hello, I'm new here, nice to meet you all :)
Is one of those the mummy near the end of a level (I think rubble falls around you), and it just stands there as if it's not "alive", but its head... just... watches you? Lara points her guns at it but it doesn't do anything.
Tomb Raider 1 is still my favourite Tomb Raider game. I liked they way you felt you were lost away from most humanity, and the suspense you got playing the game. The graphics don't bother me, because for me it's the gameplay that counts most, and I still think it looks nice. Sometimes though the camera angle got a bit muddled up, or you'd get the angle for jumping wrong and she'd fall, but these are just little niggles that could be sorted out. I actually like the controls and camera for Tomb Raider 1 better than the rotatey controls on Legends! If the movement could be made a little more flexible (e.g you don't have to be exactly in the right place to pull a switch), and I'd be perfectly happy. TR1 is still one of my favourite games.

Well in that level the one watches lara as she moves about the room but it doesn't harm her. In Tomb of Qualopec there are 3 mummies 2 near the scion and one right next to the bird gate switch in the sliding pillar puzzle. And there's also one that looks exactly like the one next to the switch in Tomb of Qualopec that's in Caves. It's where you climb up if you fall down where the golden bridge is where the first set of wolves are.
mummiy in Caves .
There's not mummy in the caves level.

Oh yes there is but it's not an enemy as it just sits there motionless. It's in the gold bridge area. If you fall down in that area you'll happen to see it when you climb up unless if you just climb up on the bridge or use a corner bug. It's in the back left hand corner of the room as you first enter the room and there's a mummy that looks exactly the same in the Tomb of Qualopec level right next to the switch that opens the gate in the sliding pillar puzzle.

Coz it looks scary. I freak out just by looking at it.
Edit: OKAY,i never watch the ending, but i guess it's very interesting thread
Still on topic, they are just talking about the things that they thought were the worst things in Tomb Raider, the things that they found scary, l used to have some real good shots of the mummies peeves was talking about, but seem to have lost them, this was the only shot l could find

Nothing, TR1 is my favorite game of all time and it's perfect. Great storyline, awesome gameplay, best villian, it's the best.
tomb raider 1 is just unbelievable,.. hardly in any other tomb raider the developers were able to put so much fascination into the first level as they did in tr1
none of the other where as great as the first,... not even the second one,.. even when the secong part had a great begining
The gameplay is slow and combat may be a bit harder than TR2-5 cause there's no twisted jump in it.

I tried to pick up that mummy at first :D
one thing that always bothered me about TR1 is how slow she ran. She was more jogging than anything :D That's what I loved about the remake, the jog was gone :)

I just beat Tomb Raider Legend the other day; the first TR game I've beaten. So I decided to go back and start playing the first TR since I've only seen my dad play it. I went to practice at Lara's home. *FAIL* I couldn't use the analog controls, she moved so slow and the controls are all whack (but I did just beat TRL, so that's probably why). And she looked all unproportioned. But like you guys said, it was made in 1996 and the graphics were AWESOME at the time. But now, just no.
I want to play it so bad, but I can't. I don't think I'll ever get used to those whacky controls. TR remake, please come soon. D:

I played it again a few months back and because I was spoilt by PS2 games with great graphics, it took a few hours to 'wean' myself off....and it was worth it.
The game graphics are not hi-res, but the artwork is inspired. I would not class it as unplayable because of the graphics either.
You will get used to the controls. I remember my mate who hates computer games up till 2am in the morning playing it. A girl friend's dad who was in his fifties playing it (and loving it), and my 7 year old nephew playing it. Play it on the PS (or PS2) with the D pad only. Analog controls just don't work well with the classic TR's in my opinion.
I'm replaying it right now. I just got through that timed door in St. Francis's Folly this morning! Yeah!
I was thinking about the graphics, they do the job - I've no problem with them. And I haven't even tried the re-texturing that Glidos allows. ($10.00 for this program? What a bargain! I dig it!)
I kinda like the Plait. The only thing I don't like is the perceived lack of things in later games. You know, the Sprint, the mid-air rool, wall climbing. Of course they didn't exist then, but oh well. the controls have always been sluggish in the early games, it's just that so many hours were spent with Lara that we all learned how to make her fly!
if you play tr 1 on ps the control are whacky,.. but on pc they rules,.. and for sure,.. i can stop loving it,.. the EVERYTHING in the game isjust great,..
love that game,...
so sad i have only 7 parts of it and some golds (4),.. i wish i could have more.... uhmmm:(
I couldn't use the analog controls, she moved so slow and the controls are all whack (but I did just beat TRL, so that's probably why). As far as I know this game was not made for analogue controls. I'm surprised you got them to work at all!! :D
You HAVE to use the D-pad, which works differently from analogue controls.
If you press "up" = Lara moves forward
press "down" = she jumps backwards.
Press "left" or "right" on the D-pad she will turn around instead of moving in that direction.
Good luck. :)
is there a TR1 remake??
I hope yes...:jmp:

Haha. After playing TRL, I just got used to using the analog controls. And so when I went to play the first TR, I was like "Oh! Maybe the analog controls will work." Then I got an message saying my controller wasn't plugged in. 8D
It just felt weird using the D-pad and I gave up trying to remaster the controls after awhile. I'll probably try again sometime soon.
She can't roll in the air while jumping backwards. You have to wait until you hit the ground.
I am replaying the game now, and it has never bothered me before, but now it does.
OK i need your attention in TRF :tmb:
