View Full Version : Most frustrating level[s] in TR1?
What was your most frustrating level[s] in TR1? I'm talking about any level where you were stuck for a long time because you couldn't figure out what to do, or there was a task in it that was too difficult, or it was too confusing?
For me, it was a tie: City of Khamoon and Natla's Mines. City of Khamoon was the first time I really got stuck in the game and thought that it had me beat. (I had no idea what to do once I entered that room with the sphinx and was stuck for days running, walking, and swimming, trying to figure out where the key was.)
Natla's Mines was a really bad level for me, because I could never find the third fuse, and I never really knew what the objective was. I mean, I knew that I was supposed to find three fuses to lower that caged room, but I had no idea that the point of lowering the room was to regain the weapons. As a result, I made a lot of bad moves that made it very difficult for me to finish the level without going back to earlier saves.
My worst move was what I did when I couldn't find the 3rd fuse. After fuses 1 and 2, I said "screw it; I'll just keep going, see what happens." This was terrible because without the fuses I had no weapons to defend Lara, and of course she was going to meet several bad guys as the game advanced. So I finally reached that point where the Cowboy was and-- guess what-- because I didn't have the weapons, I had to make Lara make that jump across the cavern as she was getting shot at. Lara died about 20x before she finally leaped successfully.
Then I had to outrun the skateboard kid and try to dodge bullets from the third bad guy with the shotgun. Of course I didn't have the weapons, so I spent days getting gunned down by first the skateboard kid, then when I outran him, getting gunned down the baldheaded guy. I was so frustrated at this point because I kept asking "How'm I supposed to survive this level without my guns?" That's when I realized that I had probably missed a few things and needed to go back to an earlier save. So I went back and was able to find Lara's guns in a secret mineshaft in that long cavern of lava with tall pillars. (Yes, they appear there as a shotgun if you don't get them by solving the fuses puzzle). But I became bummed when I learned after the fact that I was supposed to have gotten the guns by finding the three fuses for the caged room, because it never felt as if I beat the level correctly.

First time I played. St Francis folly - The Neptune Room. Was not good at swimming at this early stage and must have drowned a dozen times. Used to almost make it. Now its one of my favorite TR1 levels.

Hey..now we have a new challenge! Donīt kill the bad guys in Natlaīs Mines. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
I had problems with Obelisk of Khamoon. I found it really confusing first time through.
I didnīt get the pistols either. I also ran past the cowboy and jumped down over the big lava pit. After I found the shotgun I went back for revenge. Hey, what if Lara doesnīt have any weapons in the end of Natlaīs Mines? Does she have them in Atlantis?
Atlantis was scary because it was all dark and them eggs where hatching all over the place! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif

One of the games I've stucked for a long time was Cistern. Me and my friends had very much problems with the level of the water, you know? We did the wrong moves, we rised the level of the water in the room that you don't need water, it was very silly, we couldn't fugure out nothing. So we didn't play the game for a long time, before me and one of my friends decided to play it from the begining. When we went at the Cistern, we knew what we had to do, and with a bit luck we passed it.
Another game I've stucked for a long time was Natla's Mines. I couldn't figure how to find all the fuses! It passed a long time after we found them all and then we finished that level.
The levels in Egypt have been very frustrating aswell, I have to say that in City Of Khamon, we stucked there for a long while...
But it was a real pleasure when we finished all the game!
In that time we were younger and of course it was harder for us, especially for me, I was a bit scaired from the mummies http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
DREWY- St. Francis' Folly is actually one of my most favorite levels in the game, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. The water puzzle was brutal. (I musta drowned Lara a zillion times.) Besides, I literally sweated the entire time I played that level, because of the heights. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/clown.gif
advis- Well, from my experience, I think in the challenge it's very easy to make it past the Cowboy/ Skateboarder (with tons of medi packs), but making it past the last guy is very difficult, because he follows you everywhere. That's a good question, though-- what if you did finish that level without weapons? Hmmmmm...!
PJB- It wasn't the eggs hatching that freaked me out in Atlantis, but that weird mutant clone of Lara that mirrors her every move. I saw that and went, "What the heck is that?!" Then I turned off the game and decided to play it the next day during daylight, because it just scared me, LOL. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif
X-Offender- I really lucked out with the Cistern, but the sounds freaked me out a little. When I first entered it, I thought they were the sounds of some large beast hiding somewhere, waiting to eat Lara.

I would always shot at it and Lara's health would go down? It took me ages to figure out that you had to make the damn thing fall down the hole! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/mischievous.gif

What about the doors at Palace Midas? It was tricky to figure out how to open them. You had to memory the letters and then combine them with the switches. The left hand door on the east wall was the most difficult, I stayed ages before finishing it and collecting the lead bar there.

"You firing at me? You firing at me huh?"
Yes mate, I'm firing at you...now squirt some ketchup skater boy!
My brother was playing while I was watching and at some point he had been playing on his own and got stuck somewhere in the Greek levels: couldn't get across a gap. I didn't know much about Lara's abilities back then, but I saw a crack in the rock and asked my brother if she would be able to grab it and shimmey across. His reaction was somewhere in the lines of Doh! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/vlol.gif
We also spend a lot of time running around Natla's Mines trying to locate the fuses. I also seem to remember running into that skateboard kid without having guns...
One thing really made us jump though! It was Thor's Hammer in St Francis Folley. It was dark and we couldn't see. Suddenly there was a loud bang and Lara's health bar had gone all black. What!? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif
We were very excited when we found out what it was though! :D
The alien cloon was cool! ;)
For me, it would have to been Natlas mines, Obliesk of Kharmoon and Atlantis.
I got lost so many times on those levels.
I donīt have any problems now, but on my FIRST playthrough, I remember St. Francis Folly was quite confusing and frustrating...
As was finding the fuses in Natlaīs mines!
And I remember I kept falling off the ledge on the last level when fighting the huge monster! It was difficult! This was before I noticed the sidejump was very useful... http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Definetly trying to find the last fuse in Natla's Mines.... ARGH!
I was mesmerized with Midas' hand. I always went and jumped on it, knowing perfectly well I would die, but I kept thinking, "maybe this time it will be ok".
Lol Golgi, i used to just jump on the hand for fun :D

Oh yeah! The Lara-clone. How DID I forget?
First time I saw it I couldnīt believe my eyes. It seemed like a really bad nightmare. When I got rid of the two demons (I canīt describe just how much I hate them!!) I started examining it and then I thought it was quite a funny little thing.. :D But I got frustrated with it because I had no idea what to do with it. And then suddenly it died! I did a big jump and the clone didnīt make it. Thatīs when I got even more stuck.
Even if I loaded an earlier savegame, it still was laying there as dead as a rock. I didnīt want to go back too far because the level nearly killed me because I was so afraid! I spent many hours trying to figure out what to do..It was my first time when I played Tomb Raider and I wasnīt too experienced. I couldnīt possibly know about bugs then.
Somehow I managed to make her come alive again. Meanwhile I had a long break when I didnīt play at all, I was at grandmaīs then and of course she didnīt have a computer.. :D I spent all my free time there trying to figure out what to do with the Lara clone and then I suddenly came up with an idea.. I was SO happy when I finally saw the creature falling down in the lava pit and the door opened! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/jumper.gif
I really miss those times.
I had a weird problem with the Lara clone as well. At one point, it sort of stood there, frozen in one corner. I had to go back to an earlier saved game to get it going again.

Strange, I didn't have any problem with the Lara clone. But it was fun :D
St. Francis Folly was a little frustrating.

One of the last levels, can't remember which one, its the one with the big Boss, can't recall how many times I died trying to kill that thing! To this day I think I've only ever done it once, I usually use a level skip or other cheat to avoid it!

Natala's mines was perhaps the most frustrating level for me. I didn't really like that level. But otherwise, Tomb Raider was a really sloid game. None of the levels were too difficult, but at the same time they werent too easy. Great game.
Finding the fuses... ahh!! That was terrible. I spent ages. The other frustrating things are Pierre disapearing in the cistern, 'till i just used to hit him twice and run off myself until he vanished. Oh and the palace midas large medipack u cant get without cheating. Soo frustrating!

X-Offender mentioned the doors in Palace Midas. what me and my friends did was we wrote the "letters" down and after figuring out what the deal was we had an easy time just opening the doors. the most frustrating level was st. francis' folly (which I think now is one of the best of all the games :D ) because of the surprises. the Thor hammer! i almost had a heart attack :)also, the sphinx level was a little dull. we spent ages there too

i thought natlas mines were hard it took me ages!
and i hated sanctuary of the scion and atlantis.
atlantis because of those horrible mutant things they scared me http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif especially the lara clone http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif

wow. I did that just the other day because I honestly could not find the guns. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/whistle.gif
Reading over Taylornk's post, when I got to the next level I had pistols and found some uzis. Also for the cowboy I evaded him and went across the lava pit. The skateboarder? I just ran through the room quickly and saved at the crystal then travelled along till I was safely out of range. It wasn't that hard. Maybe 3 medipacks.

Very realistic, since the creature was just born its investigating Lara's physics I surmise. A tip for beating it is just hang on the ledge till you hear him crawl away, then go up and shoot till he comes near, then drop down and repeat!

I hated the obelisk of khamoon because I never understood where you got the keys. When I first played Atlanta I was terrified of the creatures hatching from eggs and me and my sister always used to scream when they came out!

this may seem sad coming from someone whose completed every tomb raider game but it was the tomb of qualapec that got me stumped! i got the scion peice then i thought 'damn, now how do i get out of here?' you see i was so young back then that i thought the boulder blocked the entrance. so i thought that you cant get out that way. stupid i know.

I played TR 1 when it first came out and at that time no one knew how to do the flaming pillars in the Palace of Midas.
I thought I would go crazy trying to make it all the way across with out getting fried.
I would jump to the final ledge and Lara would die before I could grab the brick.
By accident I discovered that if you saved as soon as you got to the ledge then reloaded Lara was no longer on fire.
Then I Finally more or less be accident I found out that it could be done easily by hanging from the pillars but I'll never forget how hard it was the first time through.

For me, the most frustrating levels in the game were:
</font> Obelisk Of Khamoon - it was too long and complicated</font> Natla's Mines - endless going through the non-stop-the-same-looking passageways</font> Atlantis - hmmm... not so frustrating, but long; I stuck many times</font>

Then, when it goes away, pull up, draw a powerful weapon and don't stop shooting. When it comes to you, holster your weapon and immediately hop back to grab the ledge. Then keep repeating this process until you finally kill it.

The place where i was stuck the longest time was in the last level, when the earth ground to shake!
it was so inoing , biccuis you coudn't see where you went, at last, i found the room white the lava and the shooting arrows
i died a million times there!
after that, everything was succesfull!
If you're playing it on a playstation, and trying to get all the secrets, then by far the most frustrating is St. Francis' Folly. The problem is that you can't save the game until after you have made a very difficult jump to get one of the secrets. You can't repeat this jump - if you fail, there's no way back. You simply have to restart the level and do the same stuff all over again, which takes maybe 15 minutes, before you can have another go.

Now, THAT is annoying. It makes you quit the game.
The best way to kill this mutant is to first hang on the edge near the corner of that big platform. Then, when it goes away, pull up, draw a powerful weapon and don't stop shooting. When it comes to you, holster your weapon and immediately hop back to grab the ledge.I found that I didn't have the concentration for this - sooner or later I would miscoordinate putting the gun away and hopping off the ledge with the inevitable result. For me, the best bet was to run round and round the thing, shooting all the time.
here's how i kill that beast-
stand in one corner and shoot at it until it comes close, then run and jump to the opposite corner and shoot till it comes close. repeat this until it dies.
i guess this way works because lara runs and jumps MUCH faster than that guy.
The one level that had me tearing my hair out was Natla's Mines. I knew that I had to get all the fuses, and that was it. When you run into the room with the cowboy guy, I dropped straight off the edge and went round the lower part of the level and got the shotgun from the secret area, then continued on with the level without the pistols. I didn't realise WHERE the pistols were or anything. Luckily, you automatically get them back at the start of the next level if you didn't pick them up.
I hated the fire pillars when I played it for the first time. I really can't stand it when Lara dies by catching fire. Well, I did the run & curve & jump thing for at least half a week, before I made it... Never tried hanging from the edges at that time, even though I did it on other occasions all the time!
Now that I played TR1 for the second time over the last few days, the fire pillars were pretty easy. Much more experience than years ago... ;)
After the fire pillars, the next thing that really annoyed me was the timed flames down in the ship wreck, but that's not in TR1.

St. Francis Folly -this stone in Atlas's chamber
Palace of Midas -this fire pillars -Oh I hated this
Natla's Mine -finding fuses.

hay guys soz iv not posted any replies in ages iv been to busy.
the most annoying levels for me were
Obelisk Of Khamoon
Natla's Mines
Atlantis
and i hated killing that boss right at the end i would always run to one corner and shoot the thing then jump to the other side and end up falling right of the platform  next time ill hang from the edge.

But sometimes the monster does manage to grab Lara as she hangs on the ledge. It pounds the ground, which shakes and vibrates like an earthquake, but then occasionally you suddenly find that it has managed to get its hand over the edge and pulls her away.
St. Francis Folly was the most frustrating level for me. Lara kept falling to her death! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif
St. Francis Folly's Thor room was very, very annoying. x_x For some reason I couldn't get through the bolts after getting the key... I always stepped on the wrong place. x___x;
