View Full Version : Levels that scared you?

What were the levels that were the spookiest to play or had moments that freaked you out?

For me, the two spookiest levels were the Colosseum and Palace Midas. They were very poorly lit (being underground and all), so I found them very unnerving. I couldn't wait to finish them.

The two freak out moments for me:

-That point in Sanctuary of the Scion where you enter the sphinx and drop into that vast pool of water. Looking down at the bottom, the sheer depth of it freaked me out, and for awhile I couldn't stomach the idea of having to swim so deep.

-The weird Lara clone in Atlantis. I actually quit the game at that point and decided to continue it in broad daylight!

Atlantis! Those mutants crashing out of those egg thingies whenever you approached them almost triggered a few cardiac arrests.

And that giant, erm, THING you have to battle. I used to panic a bit whenever I fought it and found myself falling down that platform a few too many times. I lost count of how many times I heard Lara scream her way to her death in that bit.

Surely it wasn't all that bad. :D

Although the endless scores of creatures jumping out from all over the place definately kept me on my toes!

That bear in the 'City of Vilcabamba' level has a lot to answer for! And those bats (do bats even attack people though?).

Definitely Atlantis. Those creatures popping out... They are fast too! Creepy...

Yea Atlantis was just scary, you would walk into a room full of them eggs, and you werent sure when one of them was gonna hatch, then suddenly CRACK! Out comes a mutant lol.

Atlantis.. Oh, and you can't forget the level in TR III where those crazy villagers spit poison darts at you. Gets me every time!

But Atlantis was pretty damn scary - the enviroment reminded me of someone's skin, the music was all quiet, and the mutants.... *shivers*

oh, I was sooo scared in like, all of the indoor levels of TR4. I actually turned up the contrast a little so I could see everything. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

It looks like Atlantis wins the survey, hands down, as the scariest level ever for TRI!

The thing that consistently freaked me out in Atlantis was that *grrrring* noise the mutants would make. If there were two-three *grrrss*, then you really knew you were in trouble. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif

I didn't find any of the levels THAT scary. There were some parts in various places where I'm underwater, and it's all dark. I always hated being underwater...

Atlantis, definately, again just scary! music, atmosphere (walls pulsing and all) and the mutants, jagged teeth doors, high drops, mutant lara.... literally everything that makes up that level is creepy in some way IMO.

Tomb of Qualopec: when you open the door and the two raptors come outside of that door. First time I played that I opened the door from the switch and didn't turn right away so the camera angle was behind Lara and all I saw was Lara and a wall. When I turned, suddenly those raptors were there. My little sister was next to me watching and I remember we both screamed and jumped of our chairs when we saw them http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

After that I immediately loaded the game and when I opened the door I was ready http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Atlantis of course !
Dude those mutants were scary and they were making strange sounds...errhh no...don't like that.

i'd have to say just the sheer creepiness of the part where you battle all the strange mutants, and the pulsing veins in the wall make it seem like you're in a giant womb or something.

I didn't find any of the levels in Tomb Raider I all that scary, but there were a few unnerving moments.
But if I have to pick a level that was the most unsettling for me, it has to be atlantis. It was difficult for me, because I had to play the entire game without sound.

I used to find the caves and city of vilcabamba scary because of the noises in the background like a gong or hollow noises when a door opened, if you get me. And the sound of the arrows! whooshh...the eerieness of those levels made me quite jumpy

The cistern! Besides it was a giant closed room, those sounds of rusted pipes scared the hell out of me especially when they sounded so loud...

Scaryiest level for me would be Atlantis or the khamoon levels.

Worst level: Natla's mines.
Could not stand it and it took me abt a week to cplete tht level

Hmm...

* The bear that comes out of the stables in Vitcabama (or whatever that level is called i never get it right)

* The T-Rex stomping round the corner

* Also the first time I went into that part of the Lost Valley and you slide down. When I first started playin TR I used to just wait and get worried about what was coming. It took a lot of nerve to move Lara out into the open. OK so imagine the scene, I'm waiting round that little corner just trying to pluck up courage to go out into the open when i hear that screeching of the first red dinosaur and I'm like 'What the f*** is that????????"

* the same goes for the Tomb of Tihocan when you go up those steps and through the little doorway and you hear that horrible mutant thing going 'aaaaaaaaaaarrrrr'

There were quite a lot of scary moments in Tombraider 1  ,

I freaked out when I encountered the T-Rex for the first time, suddenly popping out of the darkness...

I did not like the levels in Greece.. creepy.

And Atlantis was scary, those creatures popping out, and the sounds and everything.

For me, TR1 is the most scariest one of all (followed by TR2).

Atlantis, definitely goes without saying. But i really hated

Sanctuary of the Scion: You're climbing your way up and then all these mutants start to pop out and attack you. Creepy...

The creepiest part I remember is the first time there are crocodiles in the water swimming with Lara. Up until then, the water was so much fun to be in, and like a safe spot of the game. After that, well ... not so much. I wouldn't stay in the water a second longer than I had to!

The scariest levels... Hmmm... Obelisk Of Khamoon (because there were a lot of mummies) and Atlantis (because there were a lot of mutants).

I don't like these guys... And the lions/panthers too...

Tomb Of Qualopec
Upon walking into the Scion room (guns away), I decided to have little look around the Scion room, including the big mummy that falls on top of Lara. Scared the cack out of me.

Elysia
25-07-05, 16:31
Scariest? I have to go with the mummies / mutants. The first time I saw one was at the beginning of the first Egypt level - I stood on the ledge, shooting at it thinking 'it's okay - I'll see what it was once it's dead and I can check out it's body'... not to happen, 'cos the damn thing exploded! Just to hear something creeping around, then the 'uuuuugggghhhhhhh'... I was very, very scared! They just creeped me out beyond belief - no other TR game has managed to get me quite *that* worked up again!

Creepiest bit, however, has to be in the Tomb of Qualopec... I went in with guns out, and Lara took a bead on the mummy just standing there. It took me AGES to get the courage up to go in there and not shoot the thing dead(er?) before taking the scion fragment. Even though it does nothing... the fact that she thinks it is hostile and it groans when it falls over... gives me chills every time.

Tomb Raider Master
26-07-05, 22:00
The mummy in the Scion room, at the end of Tomb Of Qualopec level, will not harm you, but you can shoot it and it counts as a kill.

Elysia
27-07-05, 08:22
Yes... but it still creeps me out! That and the cat statue in the first Egypt level... I spent AGES avoiding it, because I thought it was going to turn into something nasty, or summon something nasty.

I am a very irrational player, I must admit! Forget the survival horror games (well... apart from the first Silent Hill, maybe) - TR1 was always the game that made me jump the most! It was that wonderful mix of actual danger and *implied* danger that got me... I spent more time creeping around 'safe' areas, scared out of my wits that something was going to jump out on me that it was almost a relief when things DID attack!

Tomb Raider Master

Yes, it knows sometimes be very unpleasant when some enemies bang around the corner and freak you out.

So far I'm mid-way through the Atlantis level (almsot to the end, folks!) and I'm in the room with the four pillars whose heights you have to rearrange. The mutants popping out everywhere and never knowing where they'll come from... GAWWWWWD. The dizzying height sof the lava room as you trudge ever upwards? GAWWWWWWD. Especially within inches of a save point, within inches of not having to do some annoyingly major backtracking from the LAST save spot. Unnerving. The vast darkness of the Sphinx room in the sanctuary is also very creepy... actually, the vast, dark, closed-in levels all make me feel creeped out and claustrophobic. How empty they are is just weird.

The Egypt levels really freaked me out for some reason. The shadowy mummy-bearing rooms, the impassive faces all around on the Sphinx and the heiroglyphics, and the panthers lurking everywhere. Same can be said for seeing Pierre running aorund in any level, particularly St. Francis' Folly and the Colosseum.

It's all effectively creepy, but that bugs me, but it makes the game fun to play if not for the fact that I'm a huge wuss.

For me the scariest level ever was Temple of Xian (level 15) from TR2. The part where Lara has to go through that dark cave full of giant spiders. That absolutely terrifies me every time I play it.

Atlantis never bothered me, I thought the Egypt levels were and I was scared of Tomb of Qualopec, mainly because those 3 rooms that u had to go in, I was scared in case a raptor would hop out..

I was also scared of Tomb of Tihocan, the enviroment was scary and knowing Pierre could pop up at anytime, brrrr

And Collusium, when u climbed out the water at the start, entered the building ran up the staris and a lion hops out on ya, I screamed the f'in house down!

well one day..i was playing the game with my brother and sister behind me. it was a big roomy area..i think it was the jungle level..its been forever since ive played it..but there seemed to be nothing around..so we thought we were home free..no more kills right. then...all of a sudden....we heard this like big stomp sound..and before i knew it..my sister, brother, and i were SCREAMING because a HUGE t-rex was running after me...and my brother was 5 then....and he ran behind the couch he was so scared. ...funny eh?

Atlantis creeped me out because of the mutants and the gross walls. =P
But what was the most freaky thing that ever happened to me while playing any TR game happened in that Colosseum. I remember I was at the top of the colosseum thing looking over the edge and stuff, firing at whatever moved at the bottum. Then next thing I know, I hear a gorrilla and I'm falling to my doom. It happened so fast. I screamed because I didn't save recently. >.> stupid monkey...
