View Full Version : Tomb Raider Anniversary screenshot and a message from Eidos
i wish they would have the legend gap.:)
OMG!! Amazing screenshot. Thanks a lot tlr online. :jmp:
:wve:
I hope to god they haven't got anything remotely resembiling a grapple.
Oh. My. God. :yik: :yik: :jmp: :jmp:
Thanks so much Justin!! :tmb:
And thank you to Eidos (never thought we'd be saying that did we? :whi:) for thinking of the fans. Your message and your gift of the screenshot is most appreciated.
I hope to god they haven't got anything remotely resembiling a grapple.
Half this thread discusses the new grapple that can be clearly seen on her belt! I think you should read the entire thread -- otherwise, it's like coming into the middle of a conversation and not knowing what people are talking about.
Ah, c'mon, the thread is about 49 pages long! Cut BlackGrey a little slack. :p
Edited because BlackGrey isn't Blackmoor. At least, I don't think he is...;)

Ah, c'mon, the thread is about 49 pages long! Cut Blackmoor a little slack. :p
It was 'BlackGrey' that said it. I get them mixed up sometimes too! :D
I gasped in delight as I saw this picture. Once I see a few more screens, no more media for me.
I know what you mean. I hope they don't release too much info before the game release. If they do I'll have to try to be strong and avoid it..... I want most of the game it to be a surprise. :)
It was 'BlackGrey' that said it. I get them mixed up sometimes too! :D
So it was! I'm going mad. How inconsiderate for BlackGrey and Blackmoor to have names starting with the same word. They should be forced to change, for your sake and mine. ;)
(Just kidding. With a username like mine, I'm no person to talk!)
Ah, c'mon, the thread is about 49 pages long! Cut Blackmoor a little slack. :p
With my preferences it's 13 pages and because I choose to turn off avatars and sigs it's actually pretty easy to read a long page quickly. You guys are just lazy! ;)

I need to have a close look at the mummies and atlanteans, before playing the game,so I'll look at any single piece of info!
I must prepare myself for facing them once one thing are mummies and skinless creatures with primitive graphics and other those beings with high quality graphics...!

Awww, I'm sorry you got picked on BG. There, there.
I think the Anniversary Edition will be the TR game we never had. Adventure, danger, puzzles, all from the same old TR1 we all fell in love with in addition to two great bonus factors: Isolation(No Alister or Zip) & Legend's graphics :tmb:

I am not impressed by that screenhot. If here are ten or over, when I might be impressed.
Correct if I am wrong. Core Design designed first Tomb raider long ago in PC, Saturn, playstation but also Game boy color. Game designer was Toby Card if I remember correct. Core designed Tomb Raider II, III, Last revelation, Chronicles and Angel of Darkness. Eidos is only publisher, who says when next game comes out and takes money. Thanks belongs to Core Design not Eidos.
What happened to Core Design? Does anybody heard they. I have heard stories that Core went bankruptcy and no longer exist. Where are Core Design games? The last game was Tomb raider Angel of darkness, which was published bugged and little incomplete. I heard rumor, that Core Design needed more time to finish game but Eidos didn¨t give that. Eidos wanted it marked as soon as possible to satisfy fans and get money.
What comes Crystal dynamics. I have heard many stories about Legeds game process. Eidos hired original Tomb Raider designer Toby Card for big money. Toby Card and Crystal dynamics maked a game.
If Eidos couldn´t hired Toby Card, could TR legend be exist or what kind of game Legend would be without Toby? I cannot give answer for that.
"Eidos is pleased to announce some special news directly to the Tomb Raider community. "
Eidos is always pleased to tell news. But i want interview from Toby Card, who tells, how he like to design Tomb raider and what kind of Tomb raider should be.
What i want for anniversary edition! It is complete game not bugs, over 15 hours play time, difficult puzzles, better AI for enemies and larger levels.
You asked to be corrected if you are wrong. You're wrong.
Please stop perpetuating the myth that Toby Gard (with a G) created Tomb Raider on his own. He didn't and it's disrespectful to the other talented people on the team (especially Gavin Rummery) when this untruth is bandied around as if it's a fact. Toby came up with the original concept of Lara, the basic design of the game and was lead graphic artist. He wasn't the complete 'game designer' as you put it -- that was done by the entire team together.

I don't think Tomb Raider was on the Gameboy Colour. Two games did come out on the Gameboy Colour, but they weren't Tomb Raider 1. It was released on the N-Gage though. Also, Toby Gard was one of the game designers. I think there were two others, but Toby created the character of Lara. Apart from that, you're pretty much on the ball.

To quote Gambit, who said it better than I ever could: "The Heath-Smith brothers who founded Core eventually left and set up Circle Studios and are wholly independent of Eidos. Core has now been swallowed up by Rebellion and they both develop games for Eidos/SCi."
I don't know if the rumour that Eidos rushed AOD is completely true, but it sounds like a reasonable excuse.
Eidos is always pleased to tell news. But i want interview from Toby Card, who tells, how he like to design Tomb raider and what kind of Tomb raider should be.
If Toby's claim that TR: Legend is how Tomb Raider was supposed to be all along reflects his actual opinion on the franchise, then I don't think he knew how the hell Tomb Raider should have been to begin with.
My computers been down for a while and as soon as its working again this is what I see! YAY!! Looking very good and now its been confirmed to be a remake of TR1. It also says its for the fans. This is good.
Core Design are now called Circle Studios, or something like that, and they're still owned by Eidos. I don't know if the rumour that Eidos rushed AOD is completely true, but it sounds like a reasonable excuse.
That's not right. The Heath-Smith brothers who founded Core eventually left and set up Circle Studios and are wholly independent of Eidos. Core has now been swallowed up by Rebellion and they both develop games for Eidos/SCi.
To add to what Gambit said, yes Core were rushed by Eidos, but it isnt all Eidos' fault, Core had leadership problems and they werent used to working in a large team (which they were, but had never done on a TR before) There is evidence left in AoD that proves Core's released version is not the intended one.

Oho, okay then, my bad. I forgot about Rebellion - just got them a little mixed up there. I'll edit my post.

I get your point. I am not only person, who thought, that Toby was Tomb raider game designer. This is interesting subject to talk and speculate it.
I have heard a story, that Toby fired himself after first tomb raider. He has lot of problems with Eidos boss. But after all, Eidos have to confess that to bring Lara back in legend they need Tobys help.
Look it is fine for me, that Toby came up with the original concept of Lara, the basic design of the game and was lead graphic artist.

Toby left Core Design after the first Tomb Raider game was brought out, just before it became really popular. Apparently, he left because he didn't like the over-sexualisation of Lara's character. So it makes perfect sense that the next Tomb Raider game he worked on has an unlockable bikini as it's main incentive for completing the game.
But yeah, this isn't the place to start dissing ol' Toby. Urm...yay for the first screenie! (again)

Not at all. I just get annoyed when individuals get the credit for team work. It happens everywhere (it's happened to me can you tell? ;) )and it's really disheartening for other team members when *one* person continually receives most of the credit and *especially* when the credit is incorrectly attributed.

No problem, Tomb Wraith. Welcome to the forum, by the way! :wve:
Now you have to find yourself a niche. We have the Legend fans, the AOD fans and the Classic fans (who are also known as The Fighting Mongooses :D). We mainly hold controlled, civilized and friendly debates regarding different of aspects of the Tomb Raider series, trying to portray our views in a polite, mature and undiscriminating manner. At no point will you find a thread that mainly consists of people saying "Crystal Dynamics/Core Design/Eidos/Legend/Legend Fans/AOD Fans/Tomb Raider sucks!" We're not like that here. :D
Then you have those troublesome individuals who refuse to catergorize themselves, making wild, unbelievable claims such as "I like Legend and AOD!" Ignore them. They're troublemakers. ;)

Nah, I'm only joking. Of course you can like both if you want too. However, preferring AOD to Chronicles is the first sign of madness. ;)

I might be mad:p but I prefer AOD: Chronicles felt empty, without a message but to tell stories about her just to end with Von Croy holding her backpack and saying he found her...To be honest, I expected TR5 to be the game in which we would control Lara in order to escape from the pyramids. And something else, of course...escaping would be the first big challenge. But well, you know...
AOD, however, had a good plot, not very TRish, but interesting enough, it´s long and has some good and inspired levels (Hall of Seasons and the Vault of Trophies). Despite its many many bugs and the horrible gameplay, it is better than Chronicles.
Oh, and something offtopic too: When I was younger, ten years ago, I used to spend my time in the manor before getting into the main adventure. And I was a young young boy Well, that´s all :)

I agree with you Ada about imdb. The forums are horrid! It's much nicer here where people read your opinion and either agree or come up with a valid, cohesive argument and throw in a joke or two. I left imdb forums because the people are so rude when you disagree with them; it's as though you've offended their mothers! Long live Tomb Raider forums and decent internet conversation!
Sorry rant over!
Joking aside the getaway is actually pretty good. It just has no replay value and doesn't take that long to complete. I'd give it a 6/10. Fun for a while but soon gets repetitive and theres no replay value. Free roam once you complete the game is pointless.
I'm so happy we finally got something that it feels like I may tear up and cry! :jmp:
I think I finally understand why eidos never give us any new info. From one screenshot we get this response. Imagine what would happen if they released a trailer as well as loads of screenshots and a list of features that are in TRAE lol.

It really is sad that people think it sucks from one screen. I myself are very excited because I am satusfied with any type of TR, not alot of people are. TR1 is great to me, TRL is great to me. I call it been positive :p
It's really sad that people think it's AWESOME from one screen! :P
I dont have any judgements about the game from just the screen. Well the screen does look amazing and I can tell it will have great graphics but that doesn't say anything about the game. The thing that interests me most is the fact that eidos said that this game is for the fans. Could this mean we're getting a proper tomb raider now?

Wow, I don't check the forum for a few days and the first TRA screenshot is posted.:jmp: Great to know the game is in fact a new version of the original. It would be cool if they threw in the TR Gold levels as well (maybe as a bonus for finsihing the game). Hopefully gameplay videos, more screenshots and an approximate release date will follow in the not too distant future. :D
You know all hell will break loose when the first gameplay video is released. Then we'll have a pretty good idea on how the game will be played. The Legend Lovers and the Core Coveters will have to meet at middle earth and have a gigantic battle. Oh, it will be epic.
And the war will continue on for several decades until we all agree that neither side will win.

i love core design more then anything... i also love the old tomb raider games more then anything... same with AOD... and i'm not such a legend fan. but sometimes i think many of us old-school fans need to really just shove the stick we have up our ass down our throat and SHUT UP! and be thankful that lara is still alive today.
survival of the fitest happens through adaption. had tomb raider never adapted itself it wouldnt be successful anymore. this way it can stay alive and that's all that matter to me.
Does anybody noticed that this lara looks exactly like the lara in flashback in peru in tomb raider legend ? :mis:
Very similar but not exactly, the braid starts at the very bottom of Lara's head in the screenshot rather then towards the center like in the Peru flashback, also if you look at the curl up at the bottom of her shorts it's a little shorter. Her pistols are more like the classic's other then Legends. And the color of her shirt is more similar to that of the classics. ;)
Adaptation, not adaption.
And it doesn't bother me if Lara adapts, but if she does, I would rather she adapted CORRECTLY without tacking on some needless setbacks. I still saw flaws in the graphics in the screenshot. I don't mind better graphics, but I do mind half-baked work. I don't mind if this game combines the good qualities of TR1 with the good qualities of TRL, but I'm starting to become a little concerned with EIDOS/CD's unusually forward approach.
Even the backpack is slightly different to the Classic one seen in Legend, the only thing that seems to be the same is the boots and socks. l would not be suprised if the model has the Legend face since Toby was called in to help out with the model on Legend, although the model for the next gen game seems to have evolved a bit, so maybe this one will be slightly different in the face as well, l will be happy either way

It had one little tiny flaw in the textures, hardly noticable, Legend had many more and it looked just fine to me, no game is ever going to be absolutely perfect

yes, there is a hole in lara's braid. but come on, if all we fans give them is constant **** and complaints for screenshots and a tr1 remake, theyll have a hard time showing us flawless stuff in the beginning. this screenshot has its flaws, but still, it clearly shows eidos have heard us.
That's not how a gaming corporation works. When it receives masses of complaints, it finds out how to fix those problems and replace them with good qualities. Would you want a company that said, "Okay, these hundred fans are complaining about [such-and-such], but it's not that big a deal, so we'll just release it with the finished copy."? I wouldn't.
no game is ever going to be absolutely perfect
Except HL2. ;)

of course they should fix serious problems. but my point actually is that half the stuff we fans are complaining about is unneccesary rubbish.
What "is" half the stuff we fans are complaining about? Name them so I can explain why we're complaining about it.

i'm sorry, i am part of the fans too... have been ever since the beginning. so first of all, i'm not critisizing you, i'm also critisizing myself :)
- for one thing, some of us (like you right now) are taking things way to seriously.
- legend was the first game made by a new team put on tomb raider. they had no idea what to really do at first, and when keeping that in mind i think they did a superb job on legend.
- they obviously played through all of the tomb raider games and looked at special moments in each one, and added all of these to legend as best as they could.
- complaints about realism. yes, i personally hate legend for just having boring human enemies. no monsters whatsoever really. in the old tomb raiders there were mythic beings everywhere. but like i said: crystal dynamics wanted to try something new, and theyre allowed to. now they know what we want back.
- complaints about eidos being some sort of evil demonic money making market. wake up to the real world kids: this is a business, and business will alwas be about money. if it weren't for eidos going after our money non-stopy there would never have even been a tr2!
- easy gameplay. i think they finally just wanted gamers everywhere to play a tomb raider all the way through. most people who pick up the game, play a few minutes and then throw the controler against the wall. everyone ive talked to only knows about locking up the butler and the tiger at the beginning of the great wall of china. legend has finally allowed EVERYONE to fully play through a tomb raider. i myself prefer the challenge of the odl games, and think legend's gameplay is utter crap.. however, i think this was only intended for this one game in order to suck more people into the tomb raider franchise.
- the only complaint i accept and understand is lara's bio change. they should have never messed with this. but they wanted to start out completly new, and so they did. there's sadly nothing i can do.
now cool it please :wve: i'm an old-school passionate core design tr fan just like you, and most people here know that. but i think i'm mature enough to be able to realize that everything changes with time, and somethings we just have to accept... and they really aren't that bad ;)
You want to make a big fuss over a tiny hole in the braid texture that you are not even going to notice in the finished game unless you record it and play it back frame by frame. Most likely even if you were looking for it when playing you would not be able to see it, l would hardly call it a serious problem!
some of us (like you right now) are taking things way to seriously.
That's my style!
All of y/our complaints are reasonable (but I would disagree with being upset at Eidos being a big money company), as are all of your counter-complaints. I'd fall back on the "first game" argument as well. However, I hope they don't make the same mistake for the second game. That's no reason to tell us to shove a stick down our throat, though. ;)
I doubt that they played through all of the Tomb Raider games. Perhaps some of the designers, but not everyone. Even the janitor should play all the games through. :D

i love core design more then anything... i also love the old tomb raider games more then anything... same with AOD... and i'm not such a legend fan. but sometimes i think many of us old-school fans need to really just shove the stick we have up our ass down our throat and SHUT UP! and be thankful that lara is still alive today.
survival of the fitest happens through adaption. had tomb raider never adapted itself it wouldnt be successful anymore. this way it can stay alive and that's all that matter to me.
Thank god someone said that.

the biggest problem to me is the lack of any obstructions in that path. if you look at screens from that exact spot in tomb raider 1 you will see blocks that lara must jump and climb over. in this screen there is just a corridor and a straight forward plain flat path. which would you have more fun traveling through? legends jumping is really fun. but jumping in legend was not because of this exact problem. there are no random things to jump on. the world isnt interesting. whats so fun about running straight through pretty scenery?
The blocks were mainly due to the grid system used for the old game, although l am sure CD would not have forgotten, there will be a drop at the end that you will miss because you are to busy staring in wonder at the scenery :vlol:

good excuse. youll be saying that up until the release. that corridor looks pretty damn polished to me. i dont see why they would texture something, add foliage to the walls, only to remove it to add obstacles later. cd doesnt believe in levels. every platform is flat. theres nothing fun to jump over or on top of or around. its straight forward plain hallways.

No way, there way futhur, the game will be out around April like TRL.
Well its a bit hard to tell how far they are from one screenshot, they probably thought they could show this one and not give to much away, we already know the level, so we are satisfied it is a remake, although it looks like the legend model with different accesories we cannot see her face, so are going to be left speculating until we find out for sure. They will no doubt finish it by the deadline set. Now if they show a screen shot of the the great wall of China, or Lara diving near some sunken underwater ship, l will become much more excited and curious about precisely where they are up to ;)

So from this, she has dropped from the ledges, and killed the 2 raptors that come from the waterfall, but I see no waterfall, so I'm confused here.
??? Why confused ??? There are several waterfalls in the original level and you wouldn't be able to see *any* of them from this angle.

29-10-06, 10:23
The bridge is not far up from the first waterfall where you meet your first 2 Raptors.
From the distance of the Bridge, the waterfall should be on the left somewhere.
The main waterfall (the one you pull up into for a secret) is far in the distance and can't be seen from here.
There is one small waterfall on the left that you can't see from here in either the original game or this new version -- it's dark and obscured.
The one on the right near the bridge also can't be seen from here due to the fact Lara is in a 'corridor' and it's obscured by the right wall of the corridor.
The ledges that Lara climbs down to get to the valley have obviously been replaced by this 'corridor'.

Good point, jones3d. Later TRs have definately been thin on the ground when it comes to skeletons. I remember getting freaked out every time I saw one, especially in The Lost Valley, as they usually indicated perilous times ahead!

read the entire thread...good stuff i must say :D
the screenshot, well it certainly is nice, if TLR hadn't have said it was from the PS2 version i wouldn't have believed it...........nice to know PS2 is getting a good send off.
i have nothing negative to say about this 1 and only screenshot released so far, but the product does look promising indeed.
regarding remake....i don't think it's a remake by the very definition of the word, i think what CD maybe doing is........(after having read this entire thread lol) make a game that seems familiar to us tradionalists and yet new for Legendists.
take/use the original story and reinterpret the actual levels, done in such away it resembles the source material but is significantly different as to keep us intrested in playing......and that's a good thing (we get the original of sorts but it will be different in such away it keeps us entertained,it will seem familiar but it won't be) abit like the Resi Evil remake.
i like what i see so far and look forward to more images....one thing is certain though...first game i ever bought way back in 1998 for PS1 was Tomb Raider, the final game i buy for PS2 will be this :jmp: (then buy TR8 on PS3 lol)
one thing i haven't seen mentioned so far in this thread is MUSIC, what music do you guy's think should be in it?.....i personally think updated versions of original tunes with new stuff :D
Tampi's "screenshot" makes me think: Why don't CD introduce in The Lost Valley a bigger variety of dinosaurs, like, for example, pterosaurs/pteranodons flying and attacking Lara? What do you think?

Tampi's "screenshot" makes me think: Why don't CD introduce in The Lost Valley a bigger variety of dinosaurs, like, for example, pterosaurs/pteranodons flying and attacking Lara? What do you think?
Fantastic idea! I think this would really add something to The Lost Valley without taking away the atmosphere. Obviously, if you came across a forgotten valley populated by dinosaurs, you'd expect to see a little more than just T-Rexes and Velociraptors (and yes, I realise I can't spell). I suppose that kind of thing would have been difficult in '96, but not now! Imagine fighting dinosaurs while terradactyls fly overhead, and brontosaurus go about eating leaves in the background. Okay, so it may not be historically accurate, but hell, it would be cool. :D
And they should have those cute little dinosaurs that follow you around and then attempt to nibble you, like in Tomb Raider III. Dammit, jones, you've put too many ideas into my head. I'll be watching Jurrassic Park and taking notes next. ;)
Also, in the water sections of The Lost Valley, they could put some aquatic dinosaurs.
Edit: The possibilities are almost endless. If they want, they can do a remake of TR1 being respectful with the original but expanding it in many ways and making it even better, for example adding vehicle sections, physics puzzles etc.
To me, it looks like Lara is walking toward a canopy of trees ahead, meaning that the valley is actually below that canopy, and she would have to climb down.
Hard to tell. The greenery ahead may just be ground-cover flora. What do you think?

That's what I thought originally, but then look at the tree in the distance, it sort of thickens out at the base and joins the 'floor'.
I think it's foliage rather than a canopy unfortunately!
Yeah, I noticed that too but was hoping for the former theory. Some of the flora as well looks like palm fonds, which made me consider the "canopy" theory.
Look at the flora zoomed next to the end of the valley corridor. It looks like a tad of drop down.

It does look like a grappling - but where is the rope? Maybe Lara has to combine objects (rope + hook.) Mind you, to me it also looks a little like one of those foldaway crossbows that Angelina used on horseback in the Cradle of Life Movie.
The main waterfall (the one you pull up into for a secret) is far in the distance and can't be seen from here.

Oh I hope they didn't get rid of the ledges to climb over from the wolves to the valley! I used to drop down and run around till the raptors attacked and climbed back to the safety of those ledges to pick off the raptors! :(
Considering the way the ground cover is spread out there they do look like the tops of taller (Lara sized) palms to me, l would say there was still a drop down to the valley floor, the large trees to the side could keep going down further. Although l think it unlikely that flying dinasours or herbevores would have survived in the valley, you could still find a few gigantic crocodiles somewhere on the valley floor, when you least expect them :D

I always thought in the FMVs and the concept arts for TR1 that Lara had the braid instead of the bun...
Yeah. But some people said they wanted her with the bun.
the reason she was with the bun in TR1 is because the braid was to complex to animate in-game.

She did. Her hair isn't that important to me (at least not compared to gameplay issues) and I think that the braid she has in this screenshot is cute, so I think it's a good idea that they tried to compromise between the braid and the bun :)

wow, the game looks very good graphically, just is it good in gameing terms. Ive never played TR1 properly, even though i own it (long story) but hopefully this one is amazing.
This is going to be a game 'inspired' by TR1.
That sounds really good IMO; especially considering the improvements in game physics and graphics that have taken place since Lara's first game. The old engine really boiled down to getting the right keys in the right locks, so to speak.
How cool it would be - instead of simply having to find cogwheels in Lost Valley - you had to find ways of getting to them, say, if they were trapped under a heavy rock? We only saw the tip of the iceberg in Legend, with regards to in-game physics.......
I think its gonna be better than just inspired :D

- easy gameplay. i think they finally just wanted gamers everywhere to play a tomb raider all the way through. most people who pick up the game, play a few minutes and then throw the controler against the wall. everyone ive talked to only knows about locking up the butler and the tiger at the beginning of the great wall of china. legend has finally allowed EVERYONE to fully play through a tomb raider. i myself prefer the challenge of the odl games, and think legend's gameplay is utter crap.. however, i think this was only intended for this one game in order to suck more people into the tomb raider franchise.

wow. I've never seen a group of fans so eager to comply and surrender any convictions they may have had about a series they love. your basically saying anything we might have a problem with should be kept to ourselves so that Eidos can direct cd to make whatever game they feel like making. if Eidos wants to turn this series into a main stream cash cow, I'm not going to take it sitting down. you can be a heard of sheep with a stick down YOUR throats all you want but I'm not going to watch Eidos do what they want with the series that is as much mine as it is yours. I'm still going to discuss the main issues that tomb raider is lacking and seems to be carrying on to the next game, that i was talking about before this picture was released.
this was all eidos' plan. This week everyone was giving welcomed constructive criticisms about what legend was lacking and what proper tomb raider title needed, in order to keep with the spirit of the old games. we were being productive. but that's the worst thing that can happen to a company that's trying to milk a franchise. so they release a pretty picture to distract us all from the real issues.
and now what are we talking about? Lara's hair. braid vs. bun. the tint of her turquoise top. the pretty shinny graphics. who will voice the new LARA CROFT! we are so distracted by one pretty screen shot of lara that gameplay no longer makes a difference. suddenly everyone is so preoccupied with getting this game, that they're afraid of discussing what we want in a tomb raider game. before this picture was released we were constructively talking about important issues like whether there should be animals or not, whether it should be a kid friendly approach or targeted at a more mature audience, and innovation. but now we are split. all because of one screen shot. we have been split between those who want to continue to share and discuss and improve the next tomb raider title. and those who will settle for anything pretty with Lara's face on it. you can shove 2 sticks down your throat. but i wont be silenced.
Before anybody makes another post that jumps to another page that says "OMG WHAT AN AWESOME LOOKIN SCREENSHOT" read Moon-Safari's post CAREFULLY and digest that information.
that's conviction for you....nice post Moon-Safari
we humans can behave like sheep at times, people shouldn't be silenced because of having strong valid opinions about what is wrong/right with a game
stick to your priciples i say and never faulter...Viva La Revolution :jmp:
Last time I checked I was still lacking on the woolly-ness and didn't go 'baa'. Please don't make blanket statements about 'groups' of fans. And what, exactly, do you propose to do if Eidos/Crystal Dynamics don't make the game that you want exactly how you want it?
As GodOfLight has already said, change happens - you can either accept it and move on, seeing the best in everything, or you can sit and cry into your beer.
so they release a pretty picture to distract us all from the real issues.
And make a statement that is as close to a public apology to the hard core TR fans as I have ever seen. Distracted? Read my earlier posts (and those of others) mentioning what prospects for puzzles/gameplay the improved physic's engine will offer.

if you're not a part of the group that I'm talking about than you have nothing to worry about. and that letter, don't be fooled. I don't know how you could buy into all of their business talk to easily. do you not remember what they said about legend? a return to the basics? a sequel to the original in spirit? its so easy to say words that you know a mass group of people want to hear. its called politics.
Buy into their politics? Yes probably.
But how many other companies do you see making this gesture? Even if it turns out to be nothing but a hollow gesture - at least they've made it :ohn:
By the way, I'm an official hopeless optimist and nothing you say can cure me :p ;)
Split ideology. I'm an official pessimist. We'll never reach a consensus, but at least there are people out there who can back up their argument with a paragraph opinion.

i wasnt shouting and i never said you couldnt be excited. my gripe is that some of the people who are excited arent letting those of us who are weary and want a proper tomb raider game, discuss important issues. it is the ones who are happy with the media release that are trying to silence us. i distinctly remember the quote "remove the stick from your arse and shove it down your throat" if im not mistaken. ;)

what i would really like is more complex level design instead of the intricate levels being dumbed down to flat plains and corridors. someone posted a picture of the exact location of the new picture, as it was in tomb raider one. and cd has removed alot of the random unleveled terrain. granted, it was blocks, but running and jumping over it was part of the fun of simply running through levels and exploring. im sure cd could make it less blocky but still add the random cliffs and platforms without flattening everything out. could someone help me find the picture in this thread that im talking about?
That quote, I believe, was from GodOfLight.
And I think he's hoping for the same thing I am: better graphics, but ALSO better gameplay, better sound, better than everything in Legend.

I can't recall anyone saying or implying something like that.
I'm still going to discuss the main issues that tomb raider is lacking and seems to be carrying on to the next game, that i was talking about before this picture was released.
So am I.And many other members. And last time I checked constructive discussion were still going.

Ditto. But in case you didn't notice, right after the release of the screenshot a "there is a grapple-the gameplay will be as crappy as in Legend" discussion begun and is pretty much still active.

here it is. theres a big difference between climbing and jumping your way through that fun mess of obstacles, and running straight through the flat corridor that we see in the new picture. if anything, thats going to make this a much shorter game than the origional, with much less to do and explore. if thats their interpretation of the main entranceway, i would hate to see what they did to all the secret rooms and hidden areas.
For those having a bit of trouble remembering this section in the original game here are a few comparison shots
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/th_comparison4.jpg (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/comparison4.jpg)http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/th_comparison3.jpg (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/comparison3.jpg)http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/th_comparison2.jpg (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/comparison2.jpg)http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/th_comparison1.jpg (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j215/aussie500/AE%20game/comparison1.jpg)
you can click on each one of those images to see a bigger picture by the way.
I think it is safe to say, aside from all the speculation here, that none of us know what will actually be done with the AE. A signal screen-shot, though the source of much speculation and discussion here among fans, can not really tell us a whole lot about how this game will be handled by CD.
Obviously, the old fans, myself included, want CD to make this rendition as close to the original as possible. I imagine their will be some CD artistic license, but, at this point, we can all only hope that this game will stay true to the original.
I don't understand why people get so upset because of a single, stylized screenshot that shows absolutely nothing of the level design or gameplay elements. There's no way of telling whether it'll be open environments or all corridors, or whether (and if yes, how) the grapple will be used.
Relax and wait until we see a lot more screenshots and/or gameplay videos before wishing this game to hell or praising it to the skies.

we're using legend as a frame of reference. and this picture looks an aweful lot like legend. the grapple. lara. and it is a picture of a level, so we can get a general clue towards the direction the level design will take. and from this picture and what we know from legend, we can come to a pretty concise conclusion that this will be tomb raider 1, legendized.
I don't think there can be any conclusion at all. Of course Lara looks like the Legend model (from behind - who knows what her face will look like), what did you expect - an all-new engine? And as I said, we don't see anything of the level design at all, so why assume it's like Legend's?
That said, I'm a bit worried about the grapple, too. But that doesn't mean I expect the worst.

make what you will from the screen. just because it uses the legend engine doesn't mean it will be crap. :hea:
legend has been out a while now, CD will time to improve what we, the fans thought of the gameplay, add in any extra things like that wall jump etc.

I wonder how long it would be before the 'I want the Core version instead' or 'TR1 is much better that TRA' postings start appearing.
I mean, it just takes Crystal to take too much out (or add too much) that was not in the original for people to make a clear decision of which one, or what 'thread of the tapestry' being removed/added made the game so special.
From Eido's message, it seems that a graphical update with a few minor tweaks is not on the cards.....when that was all that was needed.
Crystal have a tough job ahead of them, I await for them to show me that they can take a classic and make it better. Its not really the safe option though, is it.

Comparison between the Core game and the Crystal Dynamics game, not the Crystal Dynamics game in general. It's futile to say which company is better than the other if we don't have comparative content. If we're talking about C.D. ALONE, then we can judge them all they want because they're the one who's baking the pie.
Awesome! :jmp: I didn't even see this until today!
how would you know. the version we saw from core was for the psp. when we see cd's psp version then and only then will we be able to judge.
But we did see the Lost Valley in both versions. Even though the Core trailer was for PSP, it wouldn't have been particularly graphically inferior to other versions (PSP is essentially just portable PS2 hardware - maybe the PC version would have looked better though).
So by comparison, this one is prettier.

So by comparison, this one is prettier.I don't know loads about these things but the Core people themselves told us the trailer was extremely fuzzy due to it being compressed (or something) to reduce the file size for uploading... and that the actual copy was a LOT better quality than the one we see...

This is a high-quality PS2 screenshot, whereas what we saw of Core's version was a low-quality PSP trailer of something in motion, which makes things blurry. I don't think we can compare the graphical quality of the two versions based on what we've seen so far. In a few months, we'll know what CD's version is like. I guess we could compare the PSP versions together, but there's not really any point that I can see because either way, we'll probably never see the full version of the Core game.
