View Full Version : Tomb Raider 2+Fraps problem

When I was recording TR2 before I dismissed the bad performance when recording at anything above minimum settings being just my computer sucking since it was old.

However, I've got a new, far better computer and have recorded far more graphically advanced games without the slightest hitch (for instance, I recently recorded a 1024x768 video of Unreal tournament at 60 FPS). Yet when I put TR2 at anything above minimum settings (software at 320x240) while I record the game goes ridiculously slow (around 7 FPS), or, at the least, less than 30 FPS. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of that might fix weirdness with an old game (playing in single core, recording on different hard drives, defragmenting, making sure all my video card settings are turned down, turning off cool and quiet etc) and they all did nothing.

I disabled sound and tried recording and I still got the low FPS, so I've at least worked out that it appears to be some kind of renderer issue. I also tried the other Fraps settings like recording at a different FPS (but 30 is apparently the limit of TR2 anyway). As a note, with FRAPS not recording the game runs perfectly.

I did try some other capturing programs, but had even less luck with them (I couldn't even seem to record gameplay with them) so I guess I'm stuck with FRAPS.

So, has anyone had any success with higher settings on TR2 with FRAPS (I'm on 2.8.0, but it was the same on 2.7.3 too)?

I've come across this problem too, MMAN. TR1 (running in Glidos) records fine with Fraps, but any of the other TRs suffer terrible slowdown, with frame rate into single figures. I also initially thought that it might be the spec of my PC causing the problem, but it obviously appears to be a wider problem. I've had a similar lack of joy in finding a solution, so if anyone has any ideas it would be a great help :)

MMAN, have you tried to record with TR2 turned to hardware rendering mode not software with low specs. It'll save some CPU time to record not to calculate 3D workaround ;)
BTW, can you post your PC specs...

Hardware makes the problem worse at the same resolutions.

I'll just post the diagnose log, if other people have the same issue maybe they could too so maybe something consistent could be found (can I assume that you have had no problems with it?):

Happens to me too (X1900XT, Pentium 650 @ 4 Ghz). No matter what settings in TR2 setup, and Fraps at half screen, no sound recording...
Changing affinity does not help.
I have no solution, yet.

I get fine results with:
Fraps settings: Full-size / 30 fps // Record sound: Detect Best Sound Input.
TR2 settings:
Z Buffer = Yes
Dither = Yes
Perspective Correct = Yes
Bilinear Filter = Yes
Triple buffer = No

640 x 480 High Colour: 29 fps.
800 x 600 High Colour: 15 fps.

It has nothing to do with the video rendering settings. Seems only related to resolution. It already happens when you start recording on the Passport screen, where practically nothing video-ish happens:
At 1024 x 768: 3 fps (3 ingame)
At 800 x 600: 17 fps (15 ingame)
At 640 x 480: 21 fps (21 ingame)

I just tried the stuff you said and I still get no more than 13 FPS at 640x480 on hardware.

You can set 320x240 in hardware if you turn off compatability mode, but then the game crashes at the end of level one, and if you set the game to compatibility again it resets to 640x480, and half-size still causes an FPS drop  .

Did anyone manage any sort of engine modification on the game ever? Since that sounds like the only thing that could change it at this point.

I find that the best settings are 640x480, with Fraps set at full size and 25fps. With those settings I get a consistent 20fps. If I set it to 1280x768 and set Fraps to half size and 25fps, I only get 13fps. At 1280x1024 and with Fraps at half size and 25fps, I get 10fps.

I haven't been using Fraps for long. I used to use Camtasia but the fps can be very low with that program, although it does have some good features, such as letting you select any area of the screen to record.

I'll have to try camtasia again, from what I recall it was one of the few recorders I could get to at least do something, so hopefully it'll work on TR2.

Plus if I can actually get something out of it that will confirm whether the problem is with FRAPS or all recorder programs.

Edit: Camtasia actually works, but it gives no better results than FRAPS, so apparently it's a problem with all recording programs.

If you only want the final video to be 320X240 you should easily be able to get 30fps. I just did a test with the settings at 640x480 and with Fraps set at half size (which gives you 320x240) and 30fps (see below) and I got a consistent 30fps.

The best way to do it with Camtasia to reduce unnecessary processor use is to set the game to "Windowed Mode" (rather than full screen) and select 4.3 and 320x240 (or any other size you want) (see below). Then set Camtasia to "Specific Window" (see below) and then select the small game window. After that, don’t move the game window because it will only be recording that area of the screen.

Edit: The general view seems to be that a program called Game Cam gives a better framerate than Fraps, but I haven't tried it.

I've never used either FRAPS or Camtasia, but if I'm correct in assuming that the recorded video is encoded in realtime (using your choice among all video codecs installed on the system) then I would go see whether that's where the problem is. The encoder might be using too much CPU, or be running at too high a priority. If video is being saved to harddisk as an uncompressed stream then the question is how much data this results in, and whether the HD can keep up with the recording.
Just a few random thoughts of mine...

As I said, I've recorded more graphically intensive games at higher resolutions and full detail without the slightest problem.

Half-size seems different from "actual" size 320x240 as while 320x240 hardware worked fine at 30 FPS half size 640x480 hardware only managed 25 (and I need a consistent 30), but I might try it one more time and I'll also see about recording a specific region with Camtasia.

It looks like TR2 just has broken support for recording programs.

Edit: I thought I had found the answer with Camtasia's region capture, but then the final result is at a low FPS instead, looks like low settings is the only way I can go (though a way to get 320x240 in hardware with compatability mode would be cool).

Sorry, I missed that part I guess. :cln:

Indeed, though I have no idea how that can be, seeing as TR2's graphics and sound outputs are DirectX-based. Wish I could help more.

Hmm... Since from what I've gathered the XP patch is third party (I think), does anyone have any idea how to force hardware 320x240 on the exe while it's in compatability mode? As that would be enough for me.
