TOMB RAIDER ANNIVERSARY PRESS BLAST
Copyright 2006 Eidos plc Press Release
[ October 30th 2006 ]
Eidos Interactive Ltd., one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, today confirms that the next Tomb Raider game will be entitled; Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary and is set for release on PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PC in 2007.
Inspired by the first Tomb Raider videogame, originally released in 1996, LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: ANNIVERSARY is a totally new 2006 adventure for Lara, faithfully preserving the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.
Using an enhanced 'Tomb Raider Legend' game engine, the graphics, technology, physics and engine bring Lara's adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion right up to today's technology standards and will offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience.
"Over the years we have had literally thousands of requests to re-make the original Tomb Raider for today's gamer, we have gone a step further, we have taken the original story and made a completely new version for Tomb Raider: Anniversary." said Kathryn Clements, Senior Brand Manager, Eidos.
"We are re-telling an incredible story using today's technology, we've taken all of the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure which will make fans of the franchise extremely happy but also attract a completely new audience."
"We've captured the essence of what made the original game so special and with today's technology, created a game that pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles. Tomb Raider :Anniversary is a special celebration of Lara's reign as videogaming's leading lady" said Ian Livingstone, Eidos.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is currently in development by Crystal Dynamics and will be available in 2007 on PlayStation 2, PSP and PC.

i cannot wait to see their interpretation of the original i am sure they will do an amazing job i have complete faith in them
Great. That may result in an earlier release.
Worries me that Eidos are making promises again.
Is this some kind of joke?
Where's the Xbox version?
I'll have to buy a new PS2 now! Was planning on playing Xbox TRA on the Xbox 360 - not that it would likely be added to the backward compatibility list.
:wve:
Good news for PC players- now it's confirmed for them! :tmb:
Not such fantastic news for Xbox(&360) players.

Reminds me of the early deals with Sony to exclusively develop for their console. Perhaps those have some bearing on this.
something is not right,.. if for x box and 360 is cancelled means that it will not have the legends add of the great super duper graphc,.. or the way they called it,.. next gen graphic?.. so,.. is it just, like tomb raider 5 was,.. a game for making people come clse,.. but just that,.. its like an apperitive before the main meal,.. so far,.. not really into the game ,.. i love the game,. but,.. do they,... are they really focusing or just making a fast game for having people playing while they develop a new one,.. i dont mind if they develope 1000 i just wouldnt like to spoil a great game like TR1,.. althou it would give them th idea of making aswell with the legend engine, a whole new game base in the chronicles principles even with the same name, but based on all the mobil, and gameboy games,...

Every game looks awesome on press release. We heard the same golden words about Legend, so guys, don't get too excited. And by the way, I don't find any new info at all.

Great news, thanks tlr!
I'm glad there's no Xbox version, the fewer the number of platforms the game is being developed for, hopefully, means the game will be an excellent swansong for Lara and TR on the PS2! :D
Plus Eidos sound confident fans will love it, thats got to be a positive sign right! :p

I'm still worried how this is going to be a "completely new adventure" that preserves the original elements of the best game ever....I suppose I will hold judgement until I see the finished product, but I am a bit skeptical as of yet.

Cool. That's what I suspected...it's not a remake after all.

****, there it is again :(
I'm still on the fence about this game. The screenshot looks good and this information makes me cautiously optimistic, but I still feel like I need to play a demo in order to determine how the gameplay works and how explorable the environment is before I get excited.

There goes the Eidos fibbing machine into action once more. 'Games for everyone' 'fans will love it' blah blah. I won't be burned twice. Why not just call it TR:A? Now it is LCTR:A - why can't they just ditch the LC bit at the start? Who else is going to be in a TR game? If the Lara comes before Tomb - I already know this isn't for me. The swingy poles and the grapple are going to be all over this. I seriously hope any new fans that play this game - take the time to play the original.

Plus Eidos sound confident fans will love it, thats got to be a positive sign right! :p
Hehe...of course they are positive, they are earning money this way. Don't expect Eidos to say bad stuff about their games. Besides, Eidos was even more positive with Legend but as you see....so I'm teling you once again. It will happen again. Fans will get too excited about nothing and at the end they'll get disappointed as they did with Legend.
I'll try to stay open minded, but I sure hope they don't legendize the hell out of the AE. :( Still, like thepetemaster said, they said these same positive words before legend, so I will be leary of any hype before the game. The proof will be in the product, when we can see how it really plays we'll know if they truely made something special or just blew a bunch of smoke up our butts... :pi:
Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about the xbox not being an original release date, I'm sure they will port it to make more cash... :mis:
They already told us Legend would please old fans and did it? there was A LOT of negative response from it. I am not going to be fooled by them again and am NOT going to get this game until I hear responses from people on here. The thing that worries me is that they are talking about attracting a new audience... well they tried that with legend, and what did they do? Dumb it down, ruin it, take out all the elements of surprise and confusion to spell it out for us.
They already have a well established audience, anyway, people don't buy a game just because it says 'we're going to attract a new audience!' if the game LOOKS good, PLAYS good, GETS GOOD REVIEWS - people will buy it. Experienced gamers who have played many games, but not Tomb Raider, I personally think they would not be impressed with legend in terms of length, easy-ness (even on hard), etc etc... Eidos/Crystal put all this stuff in to attract a new audience but are effectively slowly loosing their old one
Don't expect anything (neither positive nor negative) and you won't be disappointed.
Of course Eidos' statements are bull - they're pure PR. On the other hand, we don't really know anything about the game, so bashing it is just as pointless. So relax, have a cup of tea and postpone any judgment until you've either seen an actual gameplay vid or even played the game yourself. Right now, it's just too early.

I'm not bashing the game, but its hard to be neither positive or negative when you've ALWAYS looked forward to TR games and never been dissapointed till Legend. Gameplay videos are just about as useful as screenshots, You watch them, think it looks amazing.. Thats what I thought with legend.. You're right I can't judge the game till it is released, I don't think I did judge it, I just told people that I would wait for peoples opinions before buying it and then decide.. also gave my POV of some of the things added in Legend which I didn't like I do not wish to appear in TR:A

Too True, Eidos always blow there own trumpet!! :p
I'm pretty glad though that they are re-making TR but adding some new stuff into the mix. And is it really a crime to give Lara new abilities like pole swinging, using her grapple and new gear to help solve puzzles in the re-make? I don't think so, who knows it could make TR better, ever though about that? :)
It's not just old fans that will play the LCTR:Anniversary game, Legend fans will play it too so Eidos are trying to keep both sides happy with the old TR story and levels but some new and innovitive gameplay for todays market and when you think about it really does make sense! :)
If they released the LCTR:A game with no updates other than graphics it'd be like Eidos wanting money for nothing, at least updating TRs gameplay will help to keep the new fans happy too :D
I played Legend, I didn't like that game but who's to say the LCTR:A game would be so bad with some of its features?

Faithfully preserve the elements? Completely new adventure for 2006?
Aren't these two opposite views? How can you preserve the original tombraider and give a completely new game? I fear a legendified fluffed attempt at our beloved tombraider is on the cards here, and if so I'm afraid my mula will be staying firmly in my wallet!
I sincerely hope I'm wrong but my gut is rumbling which is a shame. I was just feeling quietly optimistic after the first 'exclusive'. Now I'm back to 'worriedly wait and see'.
Oh optimism.......what a fickle bedfellow you are!:(

I'm not surprised there is no Xbox version.
Xbox 1 gaming is dead now (sad but true). TRL on Xbox 1 probably didn't return a big enough profit hence why there is no Xbox version.
While CD is busy at work on TR8 for Xbox 360 and PS3.
CD could not release the same old 'Legend engine' as a second generation 360 game. It just doesn't cut the mustard now compared to recent releases like Gears of War. I want to play a 'true' next gen Tomb Raider not a simple port which is what this game would be. They are more likely developing a brand new engine for the next gen consoles. Hence why there is no 360 or PS3 version.

That would be great.
Personally I would've liked to see an Xbox version instead of the PSP one, though. Why cater to two Sony consoles (PSP being only a handheld at that) instead of covering all major systems? That doesn't make much sense if they want as many people as possible to play this one.

I agree. I suspect that TR-AE is going to be limited by the PS2-PSP and any nex-gen would be seen only in the PC version.
Once CD can free themselves from the current gen consoles then we can expect to see something really different.

CD are just thinking ahead Mona. By the time TR:A is released (Spring 07?) the Xbox 1 will be well and truly gone. Only the PS2 and PSP will have strong support.
I find it a bit odd too that there will be no xbox version. The xbox is at the end of its life cycle however, so is the ps2. They are releasing the game on a platform that is already nearly obsolete.
I think there is a strong possibility that xbox 360 and ps3 versions could come. There could also be a possible wii version.

Good point. I guess a current-gen X360 version wouldn't be very popular either, but it's still a shame for Xbox gamers. Well, maybe Eidos can include it as a free bonus with TR8 for X360.
people should realise also that, although PS2 is nearing it's end.......as a console it is still selling well enough to warrent support.
all i can say is, i'm sure glad i didn't abandon ship, and jump on the "xbox is the be and end all of gaming stuff Sony & Nintendo bandwagon"..........i didn't sell out so...if xbox owners are annoyed that this game isn't coming out on it.....you should have kept your PS2 aswell really tut tut tut
EDIT: it is a tad unfair though with regard Xbox 1, but what can you do..buy the PC version :jmp:

So this is a remake and then some?
Uh oh, Eidos are making promises again, I worry that they'll "Legendise" the original classic :(

we might end up with the tr5 diving suit in the cistern or summin! :p

great news:tmb:
I was glad to hear that it won't be a strict remake. Adding new elements will give me something to look forward to. I have to confess that I have played TR1 more times than I would like to count. Something new besides updated graphics would be nice.

I'm with you on that point, samsdad. If it is a strictly stay true to the original, then it will just be window dressing on a game we know by heart. It does need to be freshened up with new routes, new traps, new puzzles, new places enemies attack, etc. Otherwise it will be kind of boring just playingwhat we know will happen. But I still want the freedom the original had. Just do things a little different, at a different time, etc, so I can feel surprised and shocked again as I play. :tmb:

I'm not that excited after what happened with Legend. When they release video trailers, I won;t immediately believe them as it might get cut in the final version. maybe the first official screen shot is not in the final game at all. I'll try to be patient until the game come out.
Great, this means that they will realise it qiuklier, and thyy will start making another game qiuklier.

I'm excited but I can't help but feel both excited and worried:(...I mean a remake is REALLY HARD to do and can be risky...I hope those new elements are the things we don't want (Zip and Alister's headset talk, all the merceneries [NONE PLEASE] and even constant music...)...
I hope this time they get to it right:D I don't blame them (I think) for LEGEND but this time they just have to! :D

If this remake was equal to the original,it wouldn't be a remake, but a copy!
Even the leaked trailer presented new elements, and it was made by the same team.
The point of doing a remake is to show another points of view, focus another aspects, etc. In this context,I think the point will be new enemies, perhaps new sub-levels added, etc.
This is the chance for CD to show it as much creative and capable as CD (sorry, but it's hard to resist to such a coincidence :D),of course they wouldn't lost their time and then ours making a high quality copy.
If they refered the Scion,is more or less obvious the plot will be similar, but perhaps it will show us more characters,or more of the characters: who knows,we might see more of ancient Atlantis or more of the its rulers.
Preserving the essence yet presenting a new game isn't contraditory. That's the point of a remake. I think the goal is to amaze the experienced TR players,"tricking" them with something already known, and then usig those elements to create new and surprising ones.

Let's hope Lara and her mum find the scion together - the last level being Avalon and not Atlantis. Then she can stop Amanda getting the scion and save the day.

After some more consideration - perhaps the press release really means (the part about using highlights of TR1) that all the swimming sections have been removed or limited due to Legends clunky control and miniscule breath-holding. Perhaps the lake under the Sphinx is now just a puddle.

DON'T SCARE ME!! Swimming is SO IMPORTANT - it's one of the main elements of tha game that really drawn me to Tomb Raider!!...O a FOR SURE they're gonna have to work on that..

I wonder what the need of two press releases was. I guess they read their first one and realized how transparent their "classic fans" ass kissing and lara croft glorification ploy was.
Hey ho...
I follow Lara where ever she goes so if I have to buy a new PS2 then so be it.
:wve:
its statements like this from fans that makes eidos believe that they can sell anything to us with Lara's name on it. that's why they released a Lara picture and not a tomb raider picture. and if you read the first press release you'll see that they do a great job at glorifying Lara. they even go as far as calling her a "digital celebrity." I certainly wont be following Lara wherever she goes. I'm not a sheep to be herded by a company after my dollars. ill be renting this one. if its a good game I will buy it. eidos has already lost my trust. and I'm going to show them they cant sell a game based on a fan base's fascination with a video game icon alone.
as for this game, I too hope this is a continuation of the legend story mixed with classic levels. I want her to get to Atlantis already so in tomb raider 8 we can be fed a serious game and forget about that childish storyline.
I just got word of it this afternoon. Some of you should go to school for a change. ;)
It seems, Moon, that if EIDOS wanted to preserve the game to be the highest quality possible, at the expense of nearly everything else, it would do so while at the same time keeping the project relatively hush-hush. However, it seems to be pitching to a denominator that's quite low. A company paints a picture to try to sell its product, and it doesn't necessarily guarantee quality or your enjoyment for your lifetime, but rather, it guarantees that you will buy their product and nothing more.
As of late, the only company that seems to follow up on its promises is Valve. And, unlike other people, I like the Steam system - it notifies me of updates (which happens almost every month) and installs them for me to make the game better and smoother running. Plus, they don't try to leave you in the dark and say, "Wait and see for what this is. We're not going to tell you anything, we're just going to let you stare at a picture and divulge whatever information you can from it."
I'm so happy! :yah:
Over a press release? I'd hate to see what happens if the game actually gets RELEASED. We'd have to admit you to the Funny Farm. ;)
After some more consideration - perhaps the press release really means (the part about using highlights of TR1) that all the swimming sections have been removed or limited due to Legends clunky controls
That would be a huge blow to the series. Although I don't think of them with a particularly high standard, if they did something like that, it would result in HUGE score drops on the gaming websites, and a sophomore slump is probably not something that they would desire. They also said that they "enhanced" the Legend engine. So my hopes have risen slightly from that.
Xbox 1 gaming is dead now
I spit in your face, and so do millions of Halo fans everywhere!
(kidding)
Now that EIDOS has gotten off their proverbial chair and started to show a bit of forwardness in their work, I've moved from a position of intense dislike to a position of cold neutral contention (obfuscation alert).
In the meantime, if they put modding tools in the game, I'm already granting it a rating of 9.
Over a press release? I'd hate to see what happens if the game actually gets RELEASED. We'd have to admit you to the Funny Farm. ;)
Yes I'm happy over a press release! Oh my god, I must be CRAZY!

I must say, hearing that they are going to adapt Tomb Raider I sort of deflated me. You can't just adapt the first of the series to whatever is the new thing over at Crystal, you have to adapt everything you've got to the original!

guted about no 360, would of been great having it with Nxt gen graphics. I think the reason its not on Xbox 360 is one, they just want it out fast. And 2 Lara made her name on PC and PS. I doubt this is gona be a trend with TR8, they wont just release that for the PS3, (if it is nxt gen only) as they would not make as much money if they just did it for PS3 and PC.

Did they release the tomb raider Gold games on PS1? no, so why would they release another Gold game in disguise on the 360. This isnt going to be a propper tomb raider title. its being released to serve the purpose that the other minor games in between major titles served: to cash in and keep fans busy so they dont realize that theyre waiting a year for something and nothing is being innovated. It's a promotional title. just be happy this is on any console at all.

No, no. Be a good little stooge and love everything eidos does. Buy everthing eidos releases, You must obey... http://www.storagebin.us/smilies/smilies/overlord.gif
Capcom did something similar to this with their Mega Man Anniversary Edition a couple years back. Basically they released it for GameCube and PS2 only, because Mega Man games in the past have only been on Nintendo and Sony systems. Then, maybe a year later, they released a version for Xbox.
The reason I bring that up is that Eidos may end up doing the same thing. Tomb Raider games have, for the most part, been exclusively on PC and PSX (ignoring Sega since they don't have a console now, and Legend which was on everything.. and of course offshoots like the GB ones). So it sort of makes sense to do it for just PC, PS2 and PSP at first (tho honestly I suspect the only reason it's coming to PSP is because the hardware is so similar that it's easy to port).
But you guys know Eidos - if this sells well enough they'll bring it to other platforms to at least cash in on some extra sales. (and I suspect at least porting the PC version to 360 isn't *terribly* difficult/expensive since both use DirectX)
Eidos? Money grubbing greedy guys??? NEVER! :whi:

Same lol. Would of been good though. Ah well i am just happy to see a TR1 remake.
Consoles are very limited devices. Old XBox is out, like UNDERTAKER explained. Very normal. Just like PS1 games are not developed anymore and you cannot play PS1 games on a PS2.

hmmm, i understand a lot of the concerns some people have for TRA, but come on, Eidos is not stupid enough to tie in TR1 with TR Legend. that oen is just too ridiculous for words.
though there's still a huge chance the game will resemble legend a lot.

Uh, yes you can :pYou're right of course. Sorry, i meant the other way around! :p
So: you cannot play PS2 games on a PS1.

hmmm, i understand a lot of the concerns some people have for TRA, but come on, Eidos is not stupid enough to tie in TR1 with TR Legend. that oen is just too ridiculous for words.
though there's still a huge chance the game will resemble legend a lot.
As I understand it, there were crates with Natla's logo on it in Legend, so I would say there's at least a decent chance that the TRA will tie in with Legend somehow, or that a future TR will tie in with TRA.
Great. That may result in an earlier release.
Worries me that Eidos are making promises again.
Agreed. I hope to all that is good and great in this world that they aren't pullng more BS out of their arse.
Is this some kind of joke?
Where's the Xbox version?
I'll have to buy a new PS2 now! Was planning on playing Xbox TRA on the Xbox 360 - not that it would likely be added to the backward compatibility list.
:wve:
On second thoughts...
Bet there are Xbox/Xbox360/PS3/Gamecube/Wii versions within 6/12 months of its initial release.
Isn't that always the way...ultimately.
The TRL pattern will be followed - there's no way CD/Eidos would exclude such a large chunk of the market indefinitely. As someone else has said, there's probably a temporary exclusivity agreement with Sony for say...six months.
Look at RE4 - Nintendo and Capcom are joined at the hip. I was a little surprised to see a PS2 version a year or so later...

"Over the years we have had literally thousands of requests to re-make the original Tomb Raider for today's gamer, we have gone a step further, we have taken the original story and made a completely new version for Tomb Raider: Anniversary."
Then can you go one step back and give the thousands what they asked for?
I'm going to keep a very open mind about this game. I'm looking forward to it and can't wait to see what new things they have added.
I think it's good that they are going to add new elements to the game, it will make it fun in my opinion.

I duno i cant see them calling TR8, Tomb Raider Anniversary not very cool lol. i think the Natla crates were a easter egg or a hint to a TR remake.
Imgaine Tomb Radier Legend, then Tomb Raider Anniversary.. doesnt seem a good name. Also TR8 is definetly gona be nxt gen, seeming Legend was on the 360, so it can not be TR8.

No, I meant that TR8 will follow up from Legend and TRA will be a separate game that might have references to Legend in it. Or maybe it sets the stage for something that will happen in TR8 which is why they feel the need to re-do TR1 differently...
They felt the need to do it differently because they now have the ability to do everything they could not due to time and graphical constraints the first time. Why just remake it with improved graphics but still leave out what could have been in the original game, possibly there is something they want to include as a buildup for Tomb Raider 8 as well, but l cannot imagine it would seem significant in this game. Since there is a good chance that in one of the next 2 next gen games we will be revisiting Atlantis, most likely Crystal Dynamics just want to bring the new fans up to speed with what happened in the earlier adventure

 But they didn't make the first game at all. How do they know what was supposed to be in it? (After hearing some of Toby Gard's comments, I don't think I trust him to get it right.) Anyhow, I'm just reacting to the wording in the press release. If they said something like it's a remake but they added new parts and freshened it up, I'd be happy. If they said it's a completely new game that follows up where TR1's story left off, I'd be happy. Instead, they said both that it answers the demand for a faithful TR1 remake AND that it's a completely new game. What the hell?

Did you hear this from an official source? I am really curious now :)

Why? They get to use us as guinea pigs ;) (If we all complain that it's crap, they know not to buy it when it gets ported to a million and one different consoles a year later...)

Yeah it was called TR 2, 3, 4 and 5 and it was why the series was lampooned in the first place.

Original concept for Tomb Raider was l believe Toby Gards, and he was the lead graphic artist on Tomb Raider 1 so would have had a fair bit to do with how the game looked graphics wise. It was only a small team on the first game, so Toby would have known of any ideas they had to leave out of the original game because of the limitations at the time. As to the Atlantis angle there are very few technologically advanced, ancient cultures to choose from as the makers of the artifacts in legend, and with the great flood clue that Alister added l would bet on Atlantis as the source. Close inspection of the map we saw in Legend reveals that there are at least 3 other locations, one seems to be close to a pyramid, one near Avalon, and one has a symbol similiar in shape to Excalibur, therefore l would assume that is the source of the technology used in the swords and dais's

Maybe. I just got the impression from Legend that either Toby didn't know what he was doing, or that nobody listened to him at Crystal. I mean, I read/heard interviews in which Toby talked about how the gameplay is the most important element of the games, Lara is a gun-toting psychopath, and he always wanted her to be sexy but not "tartish." I haven't gotten around to playing Legend yet because the demo plus all of the trailers basically proved to me that nothing he said ended up in the game :(

Ah, in that case, good observations and reasoning :) It makes sense. I will get around to playing Legend soon (probably when I go home for Thanksgiving) so I will see those clues for myself :)
