Lot's of the usual PR hype...ign article:
It's been ten years and Lara Croft is still going strong. Today, Eidos Interactive announced the next title in the Tomb Raider saga would celebrate a decade of the top-heavy archaeologist's escapades. No? Really? I always thought she was flat chested! :p
Tomb Raider: Anniversary, is a completely new adventure that pays tribute to the original 1996 release. Using an enhanced version of the Tomb Raider Legend engine, Uh oh! the Anniversary edition has Lara hunting down the mystical artifact known as the Scion. Sound familiar? This is the same quest undertaken in the original Tomb Raider. However, Eidos promises a completely remade game with new puzzles with "physics driven solutions." Great! More ball/block pushing...
"Lara Croft is more than just a video game character -- she is a digital-celebrity Ummm, no, we want the adventure, NOT the celebrity! :cen: and icon for the video game industry, as well as a strong, powerful character that people of all ages connect with," said Eidos' Director of Marketing, Matt Gorman. "We are re-telling an incredible story using today's technology, Oh boy, more grapple, autograb, and headset. :hea: we've taken all of the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure."
Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary arrives Spring 2007 on PSP, PS2 and PC.Old news. ;)
Gameradar's article:
The rumour has finally come true, for today publisher Eidos has confirmed that the original Tomb Raider will be remade and renamed as Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary. And to celebrate this being 10 years since Lara's 1996 debut, this remake will appear on PS2, PC and PSP in, um... 2007.
Being billed as "a completely new gameplay experience," Anniversary will use an enhanced version of the engine beneath Tomb Raider: Legend and promises to do more than merely shove the original title through a prettyfication process. In fact Kathryn Clements from Eidos gushed: "We've taken all the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure".
So while we do know that Lara will again be in pursuit of the Scion and hopefully battle a T-Rex, we don't know if the original puzzles and problems will also undergo the same overhaul. All we do know is that another Eidos employee, Ian Livingstone, has called it "a game that pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a special celebration of Lara's reign as videogaming's leading lady."
Thanks, but we'll form our own opinions when we get to see more of this Crystal Dynamics-developed sequel very soon. My sentiments, exactly! :ohn:
