'Brilliant' Bond seduces critics

Choosing Daniel Craig as the new James Bond upset some fans
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/v3/inline_dashed_line.gif

Daniel Craig's performance as James Bond has been hailed as "terrific" and "simply brilliant" in early reviews of his 007 debut in Casino Royale.

The first verdicts on Craig - who was a controversial choice to play the spy - have been gushing. The Daily Mirror said he was seen "oozing the kind of edgy menace that recalls Sean Connery at his best". And the Daily Telegraph wrote that he "steps with full assuredness into Sean Connery's old handmade shoes". Connery, who appeared in seven Bond films, was recently voted the best 007 of all time.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42276000/jpg/_42276770_casino2_203index.jpg
But when Craig was picked to replace Pierce Brosnan last year, a small band of disapproving fans called for a boycott of Casino Royale. In the new film, Bond makes a break from the super-slick, stereotyped spy of the past, the UK newspaper critics said - but all declared the end result a triumph. "It's Bond, but not as we've known it," according to the Telegraph. The guns and action are there... the girls are certainly there... but the clonking double entendres of the old days are gone - in their place is a much more teasing, smartly written prospect."

'Unpredictable and vulnerable'
Daniel Craig had a face "like an Easter Island statue" and makes "a terrific debut", it added. "He manages to exude not only danger and unpredictability and wit - but also, and this is a first, some vulnerability."
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42276000/jpg/_42276764_connerypa_203.jpg

The Times declared: "Craig is up there with the best - he combines Sean Connery's athleticism and cocksure swagger with Timothy Dalton's thrilling undercurrent of stone-cold cruelty." Craig's impressive physique makes him "a far more plausible Bond than many of his predecessors", it added. "But his main asset quickly becomes evident. He can act." The action was "edgy", the paper said, with stunts that were more physical and violence that was more raw. The Mirror said the James Bond rule book had been "well and truly torn up" for the 21st official film.

'More human'
"From the start you can tell this isn't your average Bond film," its critic wrote, adding that it was "easily the best film since GoldenEye".Based on Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, Casino Royale begins with a brutal black-and-white fight scene in a bare bathroom. Since Craig was chosen, the actor and film-makers have promised a more human and gritty character.

Casino Royale reaches cinemas on 17 November.

It's a movie, it doesn't have to be realistic. "a more human and gritty character".
Well, as long as it's as good, and is like all the other Bond movies, then I'm fine with it. :)

Well at least the film is good, but I would have liked it more with Pierce Brosnen! Daniel Craig should play a baddie in the film...that would be more fitting.

What about Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton?
They were all great Bonds.

You think he has glass eyes, maybe?! :p
Im sorry, but people DO have blue eyes in this world, you know!

And yes, Connery was great. But its hardly fair to compare anyone to him. Do people want a new Bond that makes Connery seem like crap? As most other things, the original will always be seen as the best.

It may interest some to know that Sean Connery was also the very worst Bond in Never Say Never Again. Stupendously bad movie.

People are just stuck on the current generation bond. Partly because he was very good and one of the more handsome bonds, atleast comparably to Craig. But give it time, he will just become a name along the ones you listed.

I have Never seen 'Never say Never again' (Or I dont remember it anyway). Why do you all say it was so bad?

But yes Daniel Craig, with the tuxedo on does have that bond look. :)

Celephais
05-11-06, 15:03
To me the actual actor playing Bond isn't that important. In fact my list of Bond movies best to worst (of the ones I've seen) runs

Thunderball
Spy Who Loved Me
Living Daylights
Goldfinger
Doctor No
OHMSS
From Russia With Love
Live And Let Die
Man With The Golden Gun
Goldeneye
For Your Eyes Only
You Only Live Twice
(and entering somewhat "yucky" territory with)
Moonraker
Octopussy

So I prefer the Connery films, but I think it's simply because they're better made, and actualy follow the plots of the book closely.

Because Connery is mid 50s, has an obvious toupee, and it's made with such an emphasis on comic relief that you hardly think it's meant to be a "thriller" at all. And, Rowan Atkinson (Of the Blackadder series) is in it playing a bungling operative. Not a good sign. I like Blackadder, but he shouldn't be in a Bond movie.

Uh, that is a long and difficult situation. The movie's general story is the same as that of "Thunderball". Ian Fleming wrote it especially to be made as a movie, and had some partners to actually make this movie. For various reasons, they could not make the movie, but his partners retained the rights. Later, when James Bond was doing great in cinema (around Roger Moore time) those partners used the rights to make their own James Bond movie - "Never say never again" (the title, by the way, refers to Sean Connery, who said that he would never play Bond again before this movie). Although there were some horrendous legal battles, in the end the movie was declared legal, though it has nothing to do with the rest of the series. There were plans to remake the movie again, but since the studio got bought by Sony, who also own the normal James Bond franchise, those plans got scrapped and an agreement was reached that no such new movie would ever be done again.

As for the new movie: From what I heard about it, I have large doubts, but I'm certainly going to watch it.

Well they've got a blond bond so its a start of a new revolution, I say bring on miss moneypenny as the new bond!!, why not have a female one aswell

I was disappointed that Brosnan was being replaced, and I didn't think Casino Royale would turn out any good (perhaps due to the negative press), but my thoughts were changed once I saw the first Casino Royale trailer.
I'm very pleased that Casino Royale got great reviews, so I'll probably like it and it seems like we'll have a great new Bond, hopefully for many more movies to come.

I didn't think there were that many girls in Goldeneye, the only one I liked was Xenia. (or whatever her name was) now Octopussy, they must have made that movie just for the girls that were in it, not much action at all.
