...a bog standard audio file recording/editing tool?

I mean editing in as far as 'cutting and pasting'...

I want to record ingame music/sound effects for use on my mobile.

Think Ryu's "Hadoken!" would make a good text message alert. :D

Another very good tool is Audacity. Did I mention it's free?

I use that... Its got basic mixing options and pre-sets for those same + option to costomize them.

I find "CoolEditPro" a great program for the job, but I don't think it is free. You can get a 30-day trial though, so go check it out! :D
