View Full Version : Running Tomb Raider 1 on a Core 2 duo?

Chug a Bug
07-11-06, 23:51
Hi Joseph and thanks. :)

Ok this my problem. I've just built a new PC - E6600 dual core, GA-965P mobo, PC6400 2GB Ram etc and I'm having trouble getting TR 1 to run on my PC.

Actually, to be more accurate it's dgVooDoo that doesn't work. I used Bokkie's TR1 installer and it's installed all the files onto C:\Tombraid

I've tried using dgVoodoo 1.40 instead and even the beta 1.50 by copying them to C:\Tombraid and overwriting dgVooDoo 1.33 but it's still a no go. I've tried Server mode and VDD and neither will work. It gets as far as the DOS4GW load screen, y'know where you get a black screen with that message at the top... and then theres a squawk from the speakers and it crashes to Desktop.

I tried the latest version of Glidos 1.33 and luckily that works so at least I'm not totally without TR.

VDMsound is installed.

Any help will be gratefully received. :)

I ran diagnose.exe and this is what it reported:

Could you delete TOMBRAID and try all over.
Just use DgVoodoo 1.31 that comes with the installer, and get that to work right.
But first update your Audigy2 ZS drivers. Start on this page (http://www.creative.com/support/)and use the Software Automatic Update option. :)

Hi again. Good call I'd forgotten about that. Ok... I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_0016.exe from that site. :)

Deleted C:\Tombraid, reinstalled and sorry, it's the same result as before. Crashes exactly as before. :(

Edit: oops just read that, I'll try the automatic update too. Hold on...

After the soundcard update, you first uninstalled VDMSound 2.10 and rebooted? Then you re-installed VDMSound 2.10 and rebooted? Then you re-installed TR1 using Advanced Installer, enabling DgVoodoo?

Chug a Bug
08-11-06, 01:21
Phew. Now lets see...

Uninstalled VDMsound and rebooted... check.
Reinstalled VDMsound 2.10 and rebooted.... check.
Installed TR1 using Advanced installer.... check.

Now when you say enable.... what do you mean exactly?

Joseph
08-11-06, 01:27
I meant selecting DgVoodoo in the installation process. :) All is explained HERE (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1.html).

Oh I see. :) Yes, I tried installing it first with normal VDD mode as per the instructions on that page. It crashed again. Then I tried installing it with VDD Mode Disabled as per the instructions on that page, same result. :(

I'll come back to this tomorrow, it's late and I need sleep. Thanks for the help. G'Night!

Just tried again... still not working. :( If I choose option 2 during the TR1 Advanced Installer to install with VDD Mode Disabled, if I then click on the Desktop icon "Disable VDD Mode" nothing happens - i.e. I don't get this appearing onscreen:

http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/images/installserv.gif

in case thats any help. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager > Processes it shows it running it the background though. Wierd.

Oh I just tried SetAffinity v1.7.1 as per this post (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showpost.php?p=1085413&postcount=7) to set Ntvdm.exe to uniprocessor mode and I also tried setting DSP ver. 3.02 SoundBlaster Pro 2 in the VDMsound properties tab . Still no joy.

Oh well I still have Glidos I guess.

Joseph

Could you just try to get TR1 working with DgVoodoo and forget about Glidos for now? You can always get it back later if you want, but for now installing with DgVoodoo would be easier.

1. Uninstall Glidos by deleting its directory in Program Files.

2. Uninstall TR1 by deleting TOMBRAID and deleting C:\TOMBPATH.TXT if it exists.

3. Use trrc.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/trrc.exe) TR Registry Cleaner will remove all game settings left behind after uninstalling TR games.

4. Defragment all your harddiskdrives. [You will have a problem defragmenting your drive "F" :
Drive: F:
Free Space: 1.0 GB
Total Space: 22.3 GB
File System: NTFS
Model: Maxtor 6Y200P0
because the free space left is only 1 GB. You should always keep at least 15% free space left on each partition. If it is less than that, defragmenting that partition cannot work anymore. So you need to get rid of some files here to create the needed free space.]
Recommended you use Diskeeper Lite (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207) (freeware) which does the job much faster and more efficiently than the inbuilt Windows defragmenter.

5. Re-install TR1 using TRAdvanced Installer. This time select 'Yes, i would like to install DgVoodoo', and follow the rest of the steps as on the TR1 FAQ page (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr1.html).

Lol. Sure, whatever you say.

Ok...
1. done.
2. done.
3. done.
4. I can't honestly see the point but..... ok, after 5 long, long hours later it's done.
5. Done, yet again.

What now?

Edit: I have a hunch its a problem with VDMsound and then I found this - this guy has a core 2 duo and nVidia '7900 like mine:

Sorry i missed this thread.

Hmm... i cannot believe it is the GF7900GTX and it is certainly not the Audigy2ZS.

What is the situation now, since you done all that. Could you post your most recent Diagnostic tool report? :)

Ehmm...Just tried again... still not working. :( If I choose option 2 during the TR1 Advanced Installer to install with VDD Mode Disabled, if I then click on the Desktop icon "Disable VDD Mode" nothing happens - i.e. I don't get this appearing onscreen:

in case thats any help. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager > Processes it shows it running it the background though. What makes you think you should disable VDD mode? On an nVidia card you should not. That is only for ATI cards.

Situation is exactly the same as before. Nothing has changed. It's still a no go. :(

No reason really. Just trying everything I could think of just in case.

That could be causing the problem.

I didn't know you had to, won't the two conflict with each other? I thought I didn't need it.

Joseph

Yes they conflict with each other. That is why you had to disable the onboard soundchip in BIOS, before you installed the Audigy2ZS. :)

D'oh! I misread your 2nd to last post. Erm, where does it mention the sound chip not being disabled? I can't see it in that list.

The onboard sound is already disabled I think. The only option in the BIOS is enable/disable an "Azalia codec" thats the only reference to sound devices in there, I've been through all the BIOS options including the hidden ones and the motherboard manual with a fine tooth comb and thats all there is. It's been set to disabled ever since the motherboard first POST'ed.

Follow up: I've just checked and yes the Azalia codec is indeed Intel's replacement for the AC'97 codec.

Look in the BIOS for "Integrated Peripherals"?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 00:30
I'll check again... yes, thats where "Azalia codec" is located. It's set to "Disabled".

Joseph
11-11-06, 00:38
You now have set it to 'disabled', and it was 'enabled' first?

If so, your diagnose.exe report should show it up again. Could you check that?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 00:44
Nope it's always been set to "disabled." Here you go:

In BIOS, disable the modem.

Which motherboard do you have?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 01:19
I can't, one is a PCI card and the other is a USB device. I disabled both in Device Manager, no change. I had to re-enable one to reconnect to the Internet to post this!

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 and the BIOS is an F5 revision. F6 is beta so I'm sticking with this one.

Joseph

OK, i am reading the manual now... :pi:

Hmm. So the Azalia Codec is set to "disabled" as you said, and not "Auto"?

Joseph

But do you have broadband or dial up? If you have USB broadband: then the PCI card, is that a modem? Of so, what is it doing there?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 01:52
Lol. Yes, the Azalia Codec is set to "disabled". It has been since the very first time the motherboard POSTed and I went into the BIOS and turned it off.

I have broadband which I access via a USB modem. Not cool I know I'll upgrade to a modem router sooner or later.

The PCI card is a dialup modem. Its there for emergency use only: if broadband is down for whatever reason I can still access the 'net with that.

Joseph
11-11-06, 02:00
Aha, i see. But as long as your broadband is working you don't need the modem and can let it go sleeping. You can shut it off in Control Panel > Device Manager > find the modem > right-click > Properties > General tab: "Don't use this device (shut off)". If you ever need it, you can simply enable it again in Device Manager. :)

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 02:06
Yes thank you I've already done that as I mentioned in my previous post. Lol

Joseph
11-11-06, 02:07
Sorry for that, just needed to be sure...

So you don't get the:
"Description: Modem #0 Line Playback (emulated)" (the #0 and the #1) in your dxdiag anymore ?

Joseph
11-11-06, 02:20
Good we have checked all that.
Let's focus on your DgVoodoo settings. Possibly the clue is there.
Could you post screenshots of your DgVoodoo Setup menu settings?

Chug a Bug

Oh I see where you're coming from now. Well I have the modem disabled see:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/chug-a-bug/Test2.jpg

but it still shows up in the dX diag see:

Heres my dgVoodoo setup: I clicked on dgvoodoosetup.exe in C:\TOMBRAID and this is what popped up first:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/chug-a-bug/test3.jpg

then I clicked on the DOS button and this came up:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/chug-a-bug/test4.jpg

and this is the same with the VESA tab selected:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/chug-a-bug/test5.jpg

in case any of that helps.

The DgVoodoo Setup menu always opens in the Windows Platform by default. But TR1 runs on the DOS Platform. So, first thing you do before changing settings is always select the DOS Platform.

In the DOS Platform, the Global tab and the Glide tab are the only ones that are important.

Could you change:
(on the Glide tab)
Refresh Rate = Set by the application (may flicker)

By the way, your nVidia Control Panel settings are default? You did not tweak?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 19:26
Ok... refresh rate set by the application in the DOS window... done.

Still no change. Still crashes to desktop.

nVidia control panel... hmm well I changed the screen resolution to 1280x1024 to make it easier to read and I changed the display manager to clone display onto 2 monitors (for reasons too boring to explain) and thats it.

Joseph
11-11-06, 19:29
Oh that is fine. But could you just temporarily undo the desktop cloning, so that only 1 is in use?

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 19:45
Sure! Ok.... it's done.

Still no change though. :(

P.S. this is the Global tab in the DOS window in dgVoodoo:

Ok. Now try in DgVoodoo Setup menu:
Colour Keying: Method 1.

If that does not help, try
Colour Keying: Alpha Based.

Chug a Bug
11-11-06, 19:58
Ok done both of those. Still the same as before. No change.

If you want my honest opinion there are clearly problems with dual core machines and as they become the norm especially with the advent of Vista rather than merely high end machines then these problems are only going to become more widespread.

We will see. I have just bought a Core2Duo E6600, new mainboard etc, will build my newest PC this weekend (hopefully). Then my main 2 PC's will be a real dualcore with Radeon X1900XT and a hyperthreaded Pentium 650 with a GF 7800GT.
Be sure i'll test TR1 on both.

Ah good! I'll look forward to reading your test results then. It'll be interesting to see if the ATI card makes a difference. Thanks for trying anyhow.

Hi there Joseph and Sim - long time no see - hope you're both well.
Well I'm back into Tomb Raider after just getting a new PC and like Chug a Bug I cannot get TR1 to run. New Pc specs:
E6600 (2.4gb x2)
Mobo ASUS P5B Deluxe
Nvdia 7950 GT 500mb RAM (91.47 drivers)
2GB RAM
SB Audigy 4 ( latest drivers)
Onboard sound disabled in BIOS and video and sound works well on all games ( TR Legend works well ) except any DOS based games. All dos games crash before loading with or without VDM sound installed and the only way I can launch any DOS game is with Dosbox ( which works ok). Unfortunately TR1 with either dgvodoo or glidos both crash before loading.
All my VDMS and TR settings are the same as my old PC settings where the games ran without problem.
Hope your new PC may shed some light on it Joseph.
Thx for any help.

Hurrah! It's not just me. I suspect that Joseph thinks I'm making it up. :p

Glidos doesn't work for you? Strange, it works ok for me. Its the only thing that does. I don't have any other DOS games so I can't try anything else.

One other thought: have you tried the latest version of Glidos i.e. 1.33? I tried an old version first of all that worked fine on my old PC that I'd had for a couple of years and it didn't work at all on my new machine, so I downloaded the latest version and this one worked fine. :)

Big Welcome Back jjohn! :tmb: Very long time no see, good to see you back.
Even Glidos does not work on your -almost the same as Chug a Bug's- rig?

Oh no i wasn't thinking that at all Chug! :D I was thinking it maybe is the nVidia GF7900GTX.
Testing on 7800GT might not be fully representable, i say in advance. :(

Hi Joseph & Chug - Yes i tried all different versions of glidos and dgvodoo with no luck at all - all dos games just crash immediately on launching. I hadn't used dosbox much before but it runs all my games exept TR1 and blood. BTW I can also not play any of the .rpl TR movies ( for Tr 2 and 3 i have to hit escape to bypass them as they freeze up ) I have also tried just using the escape player running my desktop at 16 bit but this freezes too. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG .

Hi John. I had the same problem, if you right click on the game.exe and select properties > compatibility then select "Run this program in compatibilty mode for:" and choose Windows 95 or 98 and that should get the .rpl movies working again.

When you say TR 1 doesn't work with DOSbox are you using the 3DFX version of TOMB.EXE that comes with the Advanced TRInstaller or are you using the original version that comes on the CD-ROM?

The 3DFX version just crashes DOSbox to desktop but the version on the CDROM does actually work in DOSbox for me, albeit very slowly. Too slow to be of much use playing (and not exactly high res graphics either) but worth noting I think.

Thx chug - yes you're right dosbox will run the original exe of tomb raider but not the 3dfx ( it needs a glide server present). btw if you press control and f12 together when running dosbox ,each hit will increase the cycles by 500 - I run mine at 30000 ( 10 x the speed in your screenshot ) and it speeds up the emulation nicely.

From the nVidia
ForceWare Release 90
Version: 93.71
Release Date: November 2, 2006
WHQL Certified
Release Notes (v93.71) (http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/93.71/93.71_ForceWare_Release_Notes.pdf):

• There may be intermittent application compatibility issues with dual
core CPUs.

If you experience this issue, first make sure you have downloaded and
installed the dual core patches from your CPU manufacturer and from Microsoft. The Microsoft knowledge base article is available at: http:// (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896256)support.microsoft.com/?id=896256 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896256).

If you still experience problems you can attempt to work around these by toggling off NVIDIA’s multithread optimizations using the following instructions:

1 Launch regedit and determine the current primary display card by looking in
HKey_Local_Machine\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video
and note the GUID (global unique identifier assigned by Windows), which is the long string in brackets { } at the end of the entry
ʺ\device\video0ʺ.

2 Look in
HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Video\{GUID}\0000
where {GUID} is the number derived from the previous step.
3
Open the ʺ0000ʺ directory and create a new DWORD called

OGL_ThreadControl
and give it a value of 2.

This will disable multithreading in the driver for all OpenGL applications.

4 If you want to disable driver multithreading for all Direct3D applications–
In the same
ʺ0000ʺ directory, create a new DWORD called
WTD_EXECMODEL
and give it a value of 0.

Just open Dosbox (VDos32), and click button Load Program. Then navigate to the TR1 CD in your player, and select TOMB.EXE. :)

I don't understand why it would not work for you too.

Thx for the pointer Joseph - I have been using dosbox 0.65 which has a win 32 installer but the application itself is all commandline. vdos32 sounds simpler but i cannot find this on the dosbox site. Perhaps it has a different developer. Please could you post a link to a download/ info on this. Thx again.

Yes I know, even if I speed it up as much as I can though it's still not exactly quick, at least not for me. The developers say that on a high end machine DOSbox emulation still only only runs at about the speed of an old 486 PC.

Chug please could you list the exact commands that you used to get tomb raider to run with dosbox - I lost mine as i was using a shortcut and now i can't get dosbox to find the tomb raider cd. Thx mate.

Like Joseph said its pretty straightforward assuming your CDROM is D:\ I used the DOSbox commands:

mount d D:\ -t cdrom

D:

tomb.exe

and that should get it working. You can find all the DOSbox commands if you enter: intro

Thx for that Chug - i was trying to be too complicated by running a shortcut and mounting both the cd and the hdd game files. Your way works fine.
Joseph - I found vdos32 after googling ( lol it only came up with 6 links and 2 of them were here- including this thread).
Seems Mr Glidos is doing something - well this worked perfectly - played the first level no crashes - Unfortunately i couldn't get it to work with sound or in fullscreen - i guess this isn't available yet.

Chug a Bug. :)
Here is my result of testing. I can be very short: not any problem.

On both PC's, the installation went superquick. I changed hardly anything from the default settings. Only added "Force bilinear filtering", and put "Resolution" and "Refresh Rate" to 1600x1200/85 Hz, and zooofff playing in full glory went immediately.
The only unexpected that happened was with the GF7800GT: the "W-Buffering" does not work, so it has to be set to "Emulated" just like on the ATI cards.

On both PC's the game runs wonderfully perfect.

And a special fact that makes me very happy: on the X-Fi the sound is astonishingly clear and crackling/hiss-free! Ingame, and the FMV's! :tmb:

Thx for that Chug - i was trying to be too complicated by running a shortcut and mounting both the cd and the hdd game files. Your way works fine.

You can also run it from the hdd game files. Enter:

and that will work too. :)

Seems Mr Glidos is doing something - well this worked perfectly - played the first level no crashes - Unfortunately i couldn't get it to work with sound or in fullscreen - i guess this isn't available yet.

Do you have VDMsound installed? The DOS sound emulation does at least work. Is the adjust > full screen option not available in Glidos?

Jjohn: if you are interested - here is a discussion about VDos32 (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopi...=asc&sta rt=0) (Vogons forum).

Joseph thats a dead link (I'm getting a "404 - Page Not Found" error.)

Chug a Bug. :)
Here is my result of testing. I can be very short: not any problem.

Oh well at least it works ok for you. :)

On both PC's the game runs wonderfully perfect.

Now you're making me jealous. ;)

You problem must have an other cause, it's certainly not the dual core CPU...

I've tried everything I can find: I've modified the registry to limit OpenGlide to one processor, I've applied the Microsoft dual core patch and I've used a program to set affinity of NTVDM.EXE to a single core in case its that, all with no change whatsoever. :(

So lets see. Thats JJohn, me and the guy on the Vogons forum for whom dgVoodoo does not work. And we've all got the same things in common: we're all using Intel core 2 processors and nVidia 79xx graphics cards.

Maybe its the card, maybe it's a combination of the card and the processor(s) together, who knows.

Thanks, thats interesting. Hmm, no Glidos in Vista and no sound either. It doesn't look good does it? Of course Vlad Romanescu was responsible for VDMsound and not Paul Gardiner so it's asking a lot for him to rewrite that too.

At least the PSX version still works great under an emulator on my PC. But playing Unfinished Business, well thats a different story. I can't even install a copy of Windows 98 to use it's native DOS environment, my motherboard doesn't support it. I tried it once and it was almost impossible to install, and when it did run was forever crashing. I gave up on it in the end.

Chug - if you want to run unfinished business on an emu you could try the virtual machine pc - Sorry i can't remember where i got mine from ( a few years ago now ) but it lets you install a separate o/s accesible from within your main o/s - I tried it with win 98 and it ran alot of dos games well - the video and sound card support are basic but it does the job.
