View Full Version : Save crystals? Yes or no?

For those who don't know, the PS version of the original game featured save crystals. You could only save at the exact destination of that crystal (unlike TR2, where you could save anywhere with a limitless supply of saves, and TR3,where you could save anywhere . . . with a limited supply of crystals.)
Anyway, would you want the save crystals in TR Anniversary, or the option to save anywhere at any time?

save anywhere at anytime. but with like checkpoints, like tomb raider legend. them checkpoints were great! hehe :D
I found the Checkpoints ok in Legend. I'm a PC player, so I don't know how I'll be with Save Crystals. So, I would like Checkpoints :)
Personally I would say a big NO to the save crystals - I don't see the point of limiting yourself in how much you can save really - just repeating is frustrating. I liked the Legend checkpoint method but if we are going to get big levels then I don't see it working quite as well - I'd like to be able to either save anywhere or save at certain checkpoints to restart on - having to do whole levels at a time is annoying (the reason I haven't yet finished Buffy: Chaos Bleeds :( ). :)
yeah for save crystals :wve:
Save crystals ro><ors!!1! :D It just wouldn't be TR1 without them, put em in just for the sake of nostalgia! :jmp: :tmb:
Save anywhere and anytime..
Checkpoints for me. You always tend to forget to save and end up back at the beginning, well at least that's the case with me.
Either TR1 (save where the crystals are) or TR3 (collect the crystals and save where ever, as long as you have one) style would be pretty good!
Or just the good old 'save anywhere' - :tmb:

Nah. :p
Save anywhere, anytime. I consider saving to be an essential functionality of all computer software. Restricting this for any reason makes me mad (it already made me mad in Legend). Imagine if Word allowed you to save only after you've written two hundred new words. That TR is a game doesn't change this one single bit.
One could throw in save crystals for those who want as an extra option, but I do not want to have to use any system that restricts something as basic as saving.
Legends Checkpoints or TR1's Crystal as checkpoints.
But still, Save anywhere and when reloading start from latest checkpoint/crystal.
The reason is that if I get bored playing and still didn't make it to the next checkpoint, I'd save and quit and reload next time from latest checkpoint.
I liked Legend's check points so I'm gonna have to go with that. :)

If TR:AE is a full TR remake, I want them back, exactly as featured in TR; If it's not a remake, I want the "Save Anywhere" System.

Save anywhere, anytime.I find checkpoints and/or save crystals frustrating. It's much more convenient when you have the ability to save and load whenever you feel appropriate.
Invisible checkpoints. You cannot tell when you reach one (no sound or visual)

That would be completely irrational and pointless! How could you know when to leave the game if you don't even know where or if you've your progress?

save anywhere. Legend's are pointless. You save anywhere but load at last checkpoint:o
No -if its a decent length, save anywhere.
In Legend you didnt need the save anywhere system because of how short the levels were - there were checkpoints at the place you'd usually save anyway (except for after annoying fly-bys I hope they have some way of skipping them next time!)

Checkpoints like Legend.
The don't get in your way like save crystals, and are just there only thing less checkpoints than legend, legend had way too many.
Crystals are trashy, and I've actually died several times because of them!
Definitely NO for save crystals. Rather checkpoints or save anywhere you want. :)
TR3 stylie save crystals would be good. I enjoyed the sense of apprehension in deciding whether to utilise a save crystal or risk entering a new area...
:wve:
Checkpoints are like unlimited-usable auto-saving crystals when you reach them...
I want to take my time to evaluate the length of a jump, to look everywhere around me if there is a deadly trap of an gorillas hiding and ready to make me fall from the edge... I want to fear death, it is part of the adventure!
So no to any saving system that help save before each jump, before each trap, before each ennemi.
Definitely!
Save Crystals were part of what made the classics so challenging! :D

Save Crystals for me please. There are more of a challenge. I'd rather not be able to save at any point. That sucks.

HELL NO!!! Thats what made me hate TR3. I would either not use them enough and die after long periods of not saving (which really annoyed me), or I would use them too often and not have enough later in the game. TR1 save crystals are absolutely perfect. It limits how often you can save creating a challenge, whilst every save point is at a set point so there is no frustration for the player worrying about how often to save. I say keep to the original and have TR1 save crystals.
I'd like save crystals that you can collect and then 'spend' whenever you feel like saving. I suppose they were like mini-secrets with immediate in-game benefit.
If you made the mistake of saving too many times - you were then running low on crystals and your heart starts to beat faster as you hope to come across a crystal high above a ledge somewhere out of sight, and then go off-a-hunting for another.
I used to love just standing Lara next to the bouncing crystal, gaze at it's beauty (consider selling it on the black market) then swipe it and heave a sigh of relief that I can get through the next 2 levels with a stash of crystals by my side.
Give the player the freedom to choose, so save anywhere, at anytime.

TR1 are more like the checkpoints if you ask me.
so if you want the TR1s then you want checkpoints. it's as simple as that
TR1 save crystals are my preferred choice but if not then save anywhere is fine. Giving the player freedom to choose when and where to save is never a bad thing. I mean what happens if you have to switch the game off right away and there's no save point near? It could get annoying. Save anywhere would appease most people. I believe we already had a vote on which save system is best ages ago and save anywhere won by a mile.

Exactly :D
Save Crystals: NO.
Checkpoints (like in Legend): Yes! :tmb:
Yes please, save anywhere not save only at check-points they were really annoying. :)
Save crystals, makes the game more challenging :D

For me the save crystals in TR 1 worked best.
I hated the way we had to use them in TR 3. For some weird reason I just didn't wanna use them, so I died over and over again... And it took me ages to finnish the game :hea:
The save everywhere thingie, I don't like either. First I thought it was nice, but in the end I liked the crystals more.
Either I save too much or I forget to do so...
Checkpoints for me. You always tend to forget to save and end up back at the beginning, well at least that's the case with me.
Me 2!!:D :D :D
I'm hoping AE will have either Save anywhere, saves at checkpoints (Legend style) or both. As well as being spaced annoyingly the apart at times in TR1 I also thought random unexplained crystals floating around kind of broke the immersion a little (certainly more than things like Legend's shiny objects did for me, as they could at least be rationalised a little).
Save Crystals for me please. There are more of a challenge. I'd rather not be able to save at any point. That sucks.
Me too, but have it like TR3, where you could 'bank' your crystals to use when ever, within reason. Being able to save unlimited encourages you to save after every little thing, and takes away a lot of the challenge. Lets face it, if you can really play the game, do you really NEED to save a thousand times a level. Or is it just a crutch? Try Lost City of Tinnos with one save crystal. Hmmm... Do I save after the earth element, or do I wait and get another during the water element. Doh!! More careful next time. C'mon people, improve your skill. I think of constant saving as a form of, almost, cheating.
save where you want (tr2) or the chekpoints (legend) to me :p
Yes please to TR1 style crystals. They made the game challenging and really kept you on your toes if you hadn't seen one in a while. I found TR was much too easy to complete if you can save every 3 seconds (and after a while the temptation to save that often really does overcome you), making challenging sequences and multiple enemies a lot easier to handle. If you can save in the middle as soon as you have got one thing out of the way it removes destroys the cumulative effect of the challenges in the later levels.
I think the save anywhere approach substantially deteriorates the skill level required to complete the game. I play games to be challenged, otherwise it's all just an inane time-killing exercise.

- I couldn't agree more. Hard games are supposed to have a element of frustration about them. Complaining about this is in effect complaining that the game is too hard. Surely a hard game is better as it gives you more for your money and more of an opportunity to get better and rise to the occasion? Games are supposed to challenge you - that's the point! <sigh> Too many people want things on a plate these days.
I can't comment on the Legend style approach as I haven't got round to playing it, but I thought the TRIII way of doing things missed the point a little as without hindsight you didn't know how many more crystals you would get so you didn't know if it was wise to save or not! It could work better perhaps if some sort of counter was included showing you how many are left (like was used to show you how many secrets remained per level in TRII and TRIII in the stopwatch). Or perhaps if you couldn't carry the crystals over to the next level so all the crystals collected were for use within the level, making things easier to gauge.
I think TR1 crystals really keep the blood pumping, as you pray to the creators that the next one is lurking round the corner and give that humungous sigh of relief as soon as you reach one. Especially if it’s after a horribly difficult series of events. I wouldn't trade that adrenaline rush for the convenience of being able to turn off instantly when your mum calls "dinner time"! :D But that's me.
- EDIT -
How would people find an "advanced pause" feature that allowed you to shut the game down and restart from where ever you were for convenience, but if you die you have to go back to your last save game point (i.e. crystal)?

not a fan of the crystals..checkpoints ok though! :wve:

save crystals waste a time
I never understood the Save Crystals, they healed my Health and i just Saved the Game everynow and then.
No Checkpoints please, i like to Save and Load whenever i want.

My opinion! I hate it, to be not able to save whenever I want.
If we're in trouble and we out of save crystals..it'd be annoying and make us mad!!
Let's see.....
The save system in TR3 PC version was great , you can anytime/everywhere and those crystals give you the health ! ;) :D

I don't bother really!
Crystals for the PS people, save anywhere for the PC people.
Crystals should be few and far inbetween and in different places from the original version.

I liked the checkpoints in "Legend" - there was a lot of them in the game, so I didn't worry about falling off and restarting the whole level. I also liked the save anywhere anytime feature - saved about a thousand times while playing TR3. It would be very frustrating to have limited amount of saves.
I never understood the Save Crystals, they healed my Health and i just Saved the Game everynow and then.
They weren't save crystals. They were the TR III PC version "health crystals". In the PS version you collected them. Each crystal allowed one save but you could use it wherever you liked. In TR I you had to use the crystal where you found it to save the game.
Yes for save crystals. I want green ones for Playstation 2 just like the PC TR3 ones. I want to collect em and save anywhere you want just like TR3.

i dont want them
i'm impartial on this.....
as long as you can save, i don't really care how and where..........
every saving method for better or worse has advantages and disadvantages,it depends on how CD feel i guess
going by Legend i think we'll get checkpoints and the option to save at the end of a level.........

The limited save crystals system added a lot of difficulty to the original PSOne game. But I'm pretty sure that CD will bring back the checkpoints system from Legend.
However, having limited crystals in the hardest mode, would be a nice tribute to the original game.
save anywhere at anytime. but with like checkpoints, like tomb raider legend. them checkpoints were great! hehe :D
I hated the checkpoints! At the end When you need all the medpacks the mercenaries drop, those just dissapear when U load  :hea:
of and I don't want crystals back like in TR3.
i'd like them when you start new game but then when you come back you save where/ever your heart may desire, but when i say save game crystals i mean the techinque in tr1 not tr3

cant a moderator put a poll on this, so that we can see what the people really want
cant a moderator put a poll on this, so that we can see what the people really want
With two different versions for TR3, the playtation version (with blue crystals) and the PC version (with green crystals)!
The PC TR3 version makes the game far too easy... you can save anywhere, anywhen and the crystals are like an auto use of a free big medipack...

I prefer any of the save systems from Tomb Raider 1, 2, or 3 three to be used in Anniversary edition. :)

No, I would like to see the save games crystals in the game to where to have to save at that spot, it will make the game more challenging and I do not like checkpoints in that were in Tomb Raider Legend. But I do like the idea of a Tomb Raider game with the TR3 save system. either TR1 save game syatem or TR3 save game system will dojust fine for me.
