View Full Version : Lara's Victory over the T-Rex - A disgraceful, trashy work of total fiction
Predictably there have been a number of unofficial biographies printed about the young Countess, that attribute wild and fantastic feats to her exploits, ranging from the discovery of living dinosaurs in the Congo to infiltrating the infamous Area 51 in Nevada. The official line from the Croft Estate to these works is simply that "...these books are utter rot: disgraceful, trashy works of total fiction."
This concerns me, really. Perhaps it can be vindicated that Tomb Raider: Anniversary does not at all have anything to do with Tomb Raider: Legend, which I have been rooting for to be the case.
Your thoughts, please. :)
You know like at work when a new manager comes in and changes everything around and replaces stuff that was working perfectly well OK... because they CAN, but mostly... to put their mark on it and feel in control the situation.
That's what I think about the new biography. It's the new dog on the block cocking it's leg against the tree.
---
I'm not too bothered with biographical changes, but I can understand why other people are.
I don't think Legend's story should be merged with AE though. I already find the Legend story too twee. I don't want to see any silly connections with Natla and Atlantis.
As for the rumours... trashy fiction aspect, aren't they simply implying that Lara denies these antics (past games), not that they never happened?? That she's a private person who doesn't want the publicity?
Lmao though @ "utter rot"... Oh the wellspring of hackneyed phrases runs forever deep...

crystal dynamics were making a joke with that bio. they are not implying that core design's games in which lara faces trexes and goes to area 51 is "utter rott" and "disgrace". instead, they are playing a joke on how the truth about lara croft is covered up ;) its like the american government covering up their supposed alien secrets at area 51 by saying its all rubbish... its lara's lawyers covering up her true exploits so she has her privacy. if lara were alive today openly saying she had killed dinos shed be seen as crazy. instead, shed keep quiet about it ;)
it's a cool joke theyre making... dont take it literal.
Well, you've a point, Blackmoor. It can be interpreted in such a way that Lara simply denies it, but that doesn't mean it is not true.
Perhaps I am just day-dreaming, but the Natla crates in Legend's Bolivia Redux all the more makes me hopeful of the possibility of at least making the Legend storyline one that is not completely irrelevant to the classic TR I storyline.

Sure do hope so, GOL. But why the need to deny it? Was it for Lara to keep her discoveries to herself? :)

Ah, there. Another way to put it. :tmb:

I understand that some people would like to see Natla tied in here :D, but the way I see it is - if they start finding connections between everything that has ever happened to Lara and Legend, it can only signify one thing... That she is a "chosen one" and her whole life has meaning beyond the sum of the parts.
Perhaps you'd like that, but I find it a cheap cop-out. There's no freshness in it, just another common-place cliched plot.
Obviously, I'm only speaking for myself. :)
All I know is there BETTER be dinos in AE, or I'm gonna be PO'd, got that CD??? :mis:

Well we know that the Lost Valley is there so I think you can stop worrying. Hopefully they will do a little better than that Jurassic Park rip-off that we saw in Core's trailer.
You're exactly right, GodOfLight... that's how I see it. I mean, who's going to take her as a serious archaeologist if she proclaims to have seen live dinosaurs, aliens within Area 51 and all that?
Even in TR1, she passed off her travel journals: "Slaying Bigfoot" and "A Tyrannosaurus is Jawing at my Head." as fiction, I do believe. ]
I like it, it adds a sense of realism and extra depth to the mythos of Lara Croft- kind of like dramatic irony. We know about all of Lara's unbelievable adventures, but the public in her world think it's all a load of ********!
If she owned up to the truth of the reports she would never get a moments peace. Crazed big game hunters would be constantly pestering her for the locations of the Dinos, Yetis. Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) etc.
Or would that be bigfooti??? :vlol: :p
Sort of like Spider-Man then? Keeping it a secret? Well it's sure to come out sooner or later...:)
Or would that be bigfooti??? :vlol: :p
Is the plural of Yeti Yeti? or Yeties, Or Yetis? Where is Elysia when you need her?
I just see it as Crystal's way of briefly brushing off the other storylines.
"Hey Bob, what should I write about Lara's other adventures in her new bio?"
"I dunno, just say Lara says they were works of trashy fiction, *snigger* that'll sort the problem out."
The only problem I have with that sentence is the word choice: "utter rot, disgraceful, trashy". Not only does it put down the ficitonal writers of these books (:p) but it can also be seen as a joke to Core Design's work - that previous Tomb Raiders are awful (which I'm sure it isn't intended to be but it can be seen like that).
A better comment from Croft Manor would be something like: "The books are works of fictions probably based off a rumour." or ""We have no comment." or "Lara does not tell of her adventures and what she finds and encounters."
All of the above work perfectly fine and leave room for interpretation and without being seen as a making fun of Core's work.

OMG!! Conspiracy Alert!
Now that you two point it out, I can just imagine Crystal having a little snigger at this (non-intentional, honest) dig. Yep, I believe this is probably a meaningful choice of words a la "Crystal Dynamics rules..."
Especially after reading what that artist at Crystal wrote in his blog too. "Serves Core right", and so on.

Exactly. If they didn't want the possibilty of what they said to be seen as disrespectful, then as Ding said - 'No Comment' would've done fine.

Great, so CD are a bunch of pompous twits that think they're great when in reality they suck.... sounds very childish of them. Where's my boycott thread??? :mis:

you guys are right to a certain extent i think. i think describing all the dino and bigfoot stuff as "utter rot" and "disgraceful" is also crystal trying to move tomb raider in a more relastic direction... facing humans nemies mainly, and occasional the odd monster boss if we're lucky. i think they wanted to move tomb raider away from the supernatural...
i would have loved to have seen their faces when they saw our reactions to that stupid concept :D :jmp:
I'd be dangerous in their meetings, I'd bring a big stick! ME >http://forum.fbodyowners.com/forum/images/smilies/twak.gif< CD
Actually, if the description of events that this guy posts in his blog is correct (i.e. Core made their own AE without anyone asking them to), then I would agree with his sentiment. But since all other quotes I heard from anywhere disagree with him, I don't.
As for the biography: I'd like to see whether they'll include "finding Excalibur" is set on the list of "utter trash" for TR8. There is not a single reason not to do so, and it would certainly help to cool down a lot of tension here. Then again, some will say that this is still a hidden sign from the developers that they didn't like Legend either, and flame wars will continue. Meh.

Wes Craven reminds me of that annoying kid back in college.
He was there in all your classes sucking up to teachers and copying your work and getting better recognition for it.
He seems like a smug guy who thinks that his **** doesn't stink. Remind you of anything??? :whi:

Yeah - something tells me that guy is/was misinformed.
The publishers -[ you know, the 'E' word ;) ] paid for Core's TR:AE to be developed. They knew exactly what Core were doing, but this really raises the question of if Crystal were told about it.
Perhaps it was indeed a backup plan.
"Get Core working on another game that we can fall back onto if legend isn't successful."
Yeah, TRA has to have dinos!

I think it would be likely that if ever there is an updated Legend biography after the events of the first length of Legend's storyline, Lara's discovery of the Excalibur will be mentioned. In the end of Legend's last cinematic, Lara said that she will contact the Cavendish laboratory. :D
