Windows XP ... Reloaded
A Web Exclusive from WinInfo
Paul Thurrott
WinInfo
InstantDoc #41858

Despite Microsoft's repeated denials, the company will indeed release an interim version of Windows XP that will bridge the gap between the initial XP release and Windows Longhorn, which is currently due in late 2005 at the earliest. The interim XP version will ship as a new retail product that replaces existing retail boxed copies of XP and as a set of updates, called XP Reloaded, that existing XP users can install separately. According to sources I contacted this morning, XP Reloaded will include all the features from XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), which is due by midyear, as well as a host of other unique features, including Windows Media Player (WMP) 10.
Other details about XP Reloaded are unknown at this time, although the update kit apparently will include a Web-based installer application that will let users choose optional features. Reports about an XP Version 2 release first cropped up more than a year ago, but Microsoft officials repeatedly denied that the company planned to issue such a release. In early 2004, when the company revealed the new security features that XP SP2 will include, the rumors resurfaced. But the XP Reloaded OS refresh will clearly include a lot more than security updates, possibly in a bid to revive consumer excitement about XP while Microsoft preps the ever-delayed Longhorn release.

This theme basically looks like Royale (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/temp/royale.rar). This theme was developed by Microsoft, but never officially released (as far as I know). I've been using it for the past year. Very nice :)

I have just switched over to CrystalXP Crystal Clear.

All of you who don't have Vista should get the Vista Transformation Pack 5.5 (http://www.jcxp.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=9580).
It is awesome. There are also things like Yahoo Widgets, Desktop Sidebar, and ObjectDock to make your computer look Vista-y. ObjectDock is just cool, though not Vista-y.

XP Reloaded Phase 3: Windows Marketing Campaign on Tap
A Web Exclusive from WinInfo
Paul Thurrott
InstantDoc #46089
WinInfo

Microsoft has unveiled the third phase of its "XP Reloaded" plan, in which it's attempting to renew consumer enthusiasm in Windows XP, its 3.5-year-old OS.

In phase 1 (August/September 2004), Microsoft released XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Media Player (WMP) 10, the MSN Music preview, and XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, while its partners shipped the first Portable Media Centers.

In phase 2 (October 2004) of XP Reloaded, Microsoft shipped XP Media Center Edition (XP MCE) 2005, WMP 10 Mobile, Photo Story 3, and the final version of MSN Music, while its partners shipped Media Center Extender devices.

Now, in phase 3, Microsoft is unleashing a massive ad campaign, called "Start Something," that will bring its message to the people."

As we enter the third decade of Windows, the Start Something campaign celebrates how people can follow their dreams and pursue what they're passionate about--from creating an in-home music studio to starting a new business or becoming the family photographer," said Will Poole, Microsoft's senior vice president of the Windows Client Business. "Windows has evolved to integrate a wide range of applications, services, and hardware in a way that has become familiar and expected as part of everyday life for millions of people around the world. We hope that people will be inspired to experience the endless possibilities available in the Windows ecosystem."

Start Something will run for 15 months and, according to Microsoft, will "celebrate the countless possibilities for Windows to bring what people are passionate about to life using the hundreds of thousands of software applications and devices that work with Windows XP." The campaign will include Web, print, and TV advertising; retail store presence; online activities; and more, according to the software giant. The advertisements will run in 11 countries, starting in the United States and then moving to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The company noted that the campaign will showcase 13 themes spanning education, science, music, sports, family and life management, gaming, photography, cooking, travel, entertainment, work, productivity, and entrepreneurship.

You might wonder why Microsoft is choosing now to launch this campaign, but the truth is that the Start Something ad campaign has been in the planning stages for about a year. However, conspiracy theorists can have fun with this tempting bit of coincidence: The XP ad campaign comes just before rival Apple Computer ships its next-generation Mac OS X release, codenamed Tiger.

In related news, Microsoft and the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) are also promoting a related campaign for the "Start Something PC" ( http://www.startsomethingpc.com (http://www.startsomethingpc.com/) ). My sources tell me that the Start Something PC is essentially a next-generation Athens PC prototype, which will be unveiled next week at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2005 in Seattle. A preview movie for the PC promises that "something is coming ... something fun ... something with reward ... something with recognition ... something with style ... something inspired." Something tells me it won't be all that exciting.

Concerning the win RELO :
1-I dunno why , but the PC is running extremely faaaaasssttt , 5 times faster than win2000  , but i admit that i added more RAM you can see the first pic which i've posted :D :D :D , and it's running really fast .... :p

2- When you want to delete a file , you press "del" key, and it's automatically get deleted , they do not ask if you're sure to delete ........

I am very happy for you that finally your PC is running to your satisfaction, Raiderfun. And yes that it's faster is because you put in more RAM, you have 256MB now, that is the minimum to run XP (in XP-Theme) normally. :)

Yup , that's right ! ;)
I knew the old exprerience, a 266 Mhz and 64Mb in RAM with XP , it was really horrible . :o :o :o , after i clicked the start menu i had to wait for 20 sec to see it....:o :o :o

I like all the XP "eye-candy" and I have all the effects on plus some extras to "spice it up" even more. All my systems are high performance so I don't see any "drop" in speed whatsoever. However on my gaming machine, which is also high performance, I'm using the classic theme and all the "eye-candy" and effects are disabled.

I should probably mention at this point that my XP CDs are customized and optimized as well to increase the performance even more. What can I say... I like tweaking.

"Eye candy" is an expression used to describe something that is visually pleasing. For example fancy effects and graphics.

I have to admit I like XP's themes too. I've been looking at the "Classic" Windows theme since almost Win'95 and to be honest I'm very tired of it.

About Vista Transformation Pack 5.5. I did not try it for myself but I've read in some forums that a significant number of people (not all) encountered some serious problems after installing the pack. In some cases they were forced to reformat their hard drives.

So if anyone wants to try it, if possible, install it on another computer (not your main one). If you don't have another computer make sure you make a restore point. Although in some cases not even a restore point helped.

Ok dmc ;)

But honestly , i really think that the processor doesn't play an important role, just see my dad's PC , 1,7 Ghz with 256 Of RAM , and mine's 350Mhz with 256 of RAM , both of them are running on XP SP2 , result : My computer is faster around 4 times or plus  , i really dunno why.....:whi:

Another thing : When i played legend the 7th April , on my dad's PC , it was really slow , so i just changed my graphic card to a nVidia FX 5500 256 Mb , and now it worked excellently ! ;)

When it comes to computers everything plays important role. How the hardware is put together, how is configured, how many programs are setup to boot after the OS loads, etc. All these play important role.

If one defrags the hard drive, scans the system for adaware, viruses etc. on regular bases, cleans the registry, updates the OS and other software, etc. This is called maintenance and it also plays important role.

Hi Lord Icon , and thank you for your advices .

I must add , that turning off the computer is a problem too ! In the pentium 4 it takes around (honestly) 40 Seconds oppositely of the 350 Mhz which take only 12 or so (to save and to close) ;) :D

And to tell you , we have AVG as anti virus , i check everytime and no virus found .....

My dad always tell me to clean the 2 HDD (because we have 2 hard drive) , and it's really hard , because i'm afraid to delete something of the system lol , and i don't wanna have this problem after .... :(
