View Full Version : Problems with TR2

I played TR2 for nearly 10 years ago and I've decided to play it again. I loved the game and I still do. I installed the original game on my windows XP and there were no problems. I played the first map, The Great Wall, and got through with no problems. The cinematic came up and the screen with how many kills, secrets, bullets etc. popped up as well, but once I press space and Venice is loading up, the game crashes and I get an error message:

"FATAL:Level 2 (F:\data\boat.TR2) requires a new TOMB2.EXE (version 1549247) to run."

F:\ is my CD/DvD drive. The "boat" could make me think that I have problems loading the boat, but I'm not sure. I don't know what to do. I've tried Tomb Raider Series XP/vista Multipatch and I've tried installing version 2, but it still popped up. Can you help me?

Thanks.

Hi Xenoth,
Welcome to the forums.

Once you have installed the XP/Vista patch make sure that compatibility mode is OFF on the game shortcut. Also do not start the game from the menu that is started when the CD is put in the drive.

Thanks.

I'm a bit confused about hwo it works, but I installed it, except the utilities. When it was installed I went to my TR2 folder and I saw a backup with a tomb2.exe inside, which I believe is the old one. I clicked on the new Tomb2.eze in the Core Design folder and I play the first level again, but I crash when I reach the second level. I thought that it was working as long as I could see a backup folder with the old exe, but I'm not sure if I've done anything wrong.
How do I check it is off? I'm not a tech, sorry :) And don't worry, I never start the game from the CD.

Edit: I've found it and yes, it's off, but I still have the same problem.

ok. Just checked the game works ok on my PC.

Can you be more specific as to when it crashes?
When you walk up to the door a Cut Scene should start. After that the score page is displayed and then press Enter to start the next level.

If you have two CD players make sure it is in the one with the lowest drive letter.

It would also help if you ran diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and pasted the results into a reply.

If you have two CD players make sure it is in the one with the lowest drive letter.
Yes that is the solution to this problem. ;)
If you have two CD players put the CD in the one with the lowest drive letter ("D" is lower than "E").

I clicked on the new Tomb2.eze in the Core Design folder and I play the first level again, but I crash when I reach the second level. I thought that it was working as long as I could see a backup folder with the old exe, but I'm not sure if I've done anything wrong.
Don't start the game there. Always quit the autorun, and always launch the game from Start > All Programs > Core Design > TR2 > Play shortcut.

Thanks again.

It crashes and the error pops up when I'm watching the score page and then hits enter to go to the next level.
And yes, it's the lowest drive letter. I have a F and G, and I'm running it on F.
It mentions "boat" in the error message... but that isn't important?

Edit: I've tried opening it through Start > All Programs > Core Design > TR2, but the error message still pops up.

I've run it, and this came up:

Oops your graphics card's drivers are far out of date. Your soundchip drivers as well.

Download the International version of the latest nVidia drivers
Windows XP/2000 32-bit
Version: 93.71
Freigabedatum: 2.11.2006
WHQL-zertifiziert
HERE (http://www.nvidia.de/object/winxp_2k_93.71_de.html).

Why can I play the first level then? The graphics are good and the sound is fine as well, just low quality.

Do you play the game on keyboard, then unplug your SideWinder gaming device.

Why can I play the first level then? The graphics are good and the sound is fine as well, just low quality.Could be because you installed DirectX9.0c, but your drivers are not DirectX9.0c compatible. So you are likely to get into unexpected problems, caused by unstability.

Also, your soundchip needs this: click Start > Run... type in:
dxdiag
On the "Sound" tab, move the slider to the left for 'no hardware acceleration'.

The soundchip-thing is done.
What do you recommend I should do?

I'm not using sidewinder much, not easy to explain why.

Edit: Oh, sorry.. I didn't see that you wanted me to download the drivers. Missed that. I will try.
Edit2: I just remembered that I have driver problems on this computer, I don't know why. The problem is that I need specific Medion drivers. I've tried normal drivers earlier and I couldn't start my computer. I had to reinstall windows etc, so I'm not sure I dare to install them. Are you sure the drivers are the problem? It mentions boat and version and I don't have problems playing the first level.

» The game crashes with an error stating that you need a new version of tomb2.exe
Download the Tomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch (Download (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html) - Freeware) and update TRII.

Where is the Medion support website?
Could you look in the manual that you have with your PC for support and drivers contact information.

Yes, I downloaded that patch, but it didn't help, as I said in the first posts.. I haven't updated the version though, if that is required. I've used the Tomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch, but I haven't used anything else. Should I do anything else?

Medion is german. I bought the computer from a German shop in Denmark, but I'm able to speak a little german.

This is the support site.

Just for the hell of it try turning on the compatiblity mode on the game shortcut.

Right click on the menu shortcut and select properties. Select the tab called Compatibility and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select Windows 98.

Oh.. I changed it to Windows 98 and now it's working. Anything I should know by running it like this? And thanks, I really appreciate the help you gave me. :)

It should work fine.
I have noticed that most PC's can run TRII without Win98 compatibility, but some still require it. Why? who knows :)

I hope you pop along to the TRII forum and let them know how you are getting on with the game. :tmb:

I personally, on XP, always run TR2 in Win98/ME Compatibility mode. On my 3 PC's i never had any need for a TR2 patch or updater whatsoever. :)

I just want to say that I had the same problem:
Fatal: Level 2 (E:\data\boat.TR2) requires a new Tomb2.exe (version 150631) to run

Going through my start menu to TR2's exe file and right click>properties and changing it's compatability to win 98 solved the problem -- downloading anything was unnecessary.

Exactly. :tmb:
