Yes it was - the cogs puzzle in TR1, where you had to find the missing cogs in the lost valley. They just made it more detailed..

01-12-06, 15:43
To autograb or not autograb? That is the question...

Actually, the question should be, to argue about autograb, or not to argue...

To me the autograb is such a tiny, insignificant detail of gameplay that it doesn't bother me at all. In fact I found it quite useful, gievn that we've moved beyond the grid-based game engine where it was possible to look at a jump and instantly know if it required a run up, or a run up and grab etc.

But back on topic, those screens look excellently detailed and true to the flavour of the original. Thanks very much for posting them (again) :tmb:

i also love the fact that CD will get some hands on experience on what makes a TR puzzle a TR puzzle :) only good can come from it !

her hair hair is a platt again, thankfully, and a long one too, I hope it behaves properly :hea: :mad:

I hope the buttons are altered just a little to make it like the classic game play like:
triangle = draw weapons
X = action
square = jump with hands in the air!
R2 = crawl
L1 = walk
R1 = look
L2 = sprint.

something like that,
and also about auto grab, there should be an option.
The legend swimmpng system was cr@p so I hope at least thats diffrent!

In fact I found it quite useful, gievn that we've moved beyond the grid-based game engine where it was possible to look at a jump and instantly know if it required a run up, or a run up and grab etc.

It wouldn't bother me either, except there was no way to tell if a ledge was grabbable without actually trying to grab it. I must have wasted ten minutes in a certain place in Ghana trying to fall off of a ledge to grab its edge and shimmy around an obstacle before I finally decided that the ledge simply wasn't grabbable. If *every* edge was grabbable (and Lara didn't autocorrect for missed jumps), then autograb would probably work fine :)

Yes it was - the cogs puzzle in TR1, where you had to find the missing cogs in the lost valley. They just made it more detailed..

I can see where the cogs came from, but is the waterwheel in the other screenshot supposed to be part of the same puzzle? I don't remember anything like that in TR1, so I'm wondering if it's an expansion to the cogs puzzle, or if it's a new puzzle entirely.

aussie500

No it is the same length, you just did not LOOK at the first screen properly, it was flying out straight behind her in the first pic, which is why some people jumped to the conclusion it was only short

Seeing Lara jumping with the camera view from the side (rather than the classic behind 3rd person angle) probably means we have legends 2D control/camera system (not really a suprise).

Shame really. Would have prefered the more 'grown up' 3D third person system of classic TR's. Thats one massive thread pulled from the tapestry which is Tomb Raider.

Seriously though, Lavinder, why don't you like the Tomb of Qualopec level? Don't you remember the tomb crumbling as you seize the Scion, and you must watch for falling debris as you escape? And those moving block puzzles, too - not to mention the rolling boulders, raptors and the lovely colour scheme and design!

I don't mind either way. It's fine that it's behind the waterfall as in TR1, but I wouldn't have minded if they'd changed it completely so access was elsewhere.

She had a braid in Tomb Raider 1 as well, all the FMV's have Lara with a braid, it is only in game it is a bun, because it was to hard to animate the braid back then. And why keep this one on the front page when we already have the original thread with the better pictures, more discussion, and a full translation of the article from the German GameStar magazine

No the braid was the same length in the official screenshot, you just did not look at where it was and what it was doing. It does not alway sit going straight down Lara's back you know, it can actually MOVE and be affected by such things as wind. Considering these are scans of a magazine which would have a slight color shift when compared to a screenshot released on the internet, the top above is the same color as the official screenshot. The darker more royal blue color is seen when Lara is wet

aussie500
04-12-06, 03:38
Yep much more complex going up, because once Lara drops of those ledges into the water she most likely will no longer be able to reach the ledges to go back up. You have to find another way to get back to the top with Lara's little collection of cogs

Maybe if they fix it so that it doesn't correct too much if you miss the jump, it won't be so bad. Especially if they have it so that every ledge is grabbable, but Lara only grabs it if you're pretty close to it. That way, we can explore a lot more, have the excitement of making dangerous jumps, and not have the autograb decide where we can go :)

Maybe the route isn't obvious, not every clutchable surface means an easy route up and down... Perhaps Lara can only go down those rocks and not up... and it takes you a few (hehe, hundred... :D) attempts before you finally accept you NEED to find another way up....

Maybe.

*hopes very much* :)

At the very least I'm sure they'll have a bit of sideways searching for the next way up bit... A bit like actual rock climbing.

Actually if they made the game like real rock climbing I'd be very happy... But they'd have to include some loose rocks and clumps of earth so you lose your grip, and slippery slidey rocks that your feet and hands slip off. Lots of death traps as you made you're way up and down.
