I dont know what happened i was making a video. I put in a clip and all of a sudden part of the song would work any more. So i removed the clip i just put in and started to play the song and then an error message came up saying "Unknown error" or some thing and then when i opened it (cause i saved it) when i opened it, it wont play the play button wasnt working. I tried other videos i had saved in the past and those wont play either. What did i do wrong??? Please tell me this is fixable. :( :( :(

Maybe corruption of the program (WMM), while the clips may be still allright. Try to test them in another program. Or, could you upload (thus making it available for me to test) the smallest (in filesize) clip that doesn't run anymore on your PC?

The clips still work in other programs but it wont work in WMM

I guess you mean that the original clips still are fine.? But the edits from WMM are not?

So your clips aren't damaged, you could still play them in any other player? :)

The clips are fine, they all work in other programs just not WMM

1. Next thing please try this: copy all your made clips to another location (so that you will have them saved whatever happens).

2. Then delete the originals (so That WMM will forget about them).

3. Defragment your harddiskdrive. (right-click This Computer > Manage > Storage > Defragment.

4. Reboot the PC!

5. Create a new, simple test-clip in WMM.

Most weak points:

RADEON X300/X550 Series / Driver Date: 2/21/2006

SoundMAX Digital Audio / Driver Date: 4/9/2004 12:41:30

Windows Movie Maker is a heavy program You will never get optimal performance with this hardware setup.

Still, you need to update your drivers to get the most out of what you are using.
For your ATI drivers go here: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html

Ok i'll do that, but i figured why it was freezing and closing out. It was the clip i was putting in. I put in a different clip and it worked fine.

Thanks again for the help :D

Ok i was making a Britney Spears video and the WMM started to mess up. (Clips wouldnt play) Well fixed that. Then every time i put in the video for do some thing it would crash WMM. When i put in a different video it didnt crash WMM. The Do somethin' video was the problem for WMM crashing.

Well download and install Catalyst 6.11 (http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html)as i recommended you earlier.

You need only the Display Driver. So, select the second download:
Display Driver 11.8MB6.11Nov. 15, 2006Display Driver Only

Important: first uninstall your old drivers!

Removing Old ATI Software

Click on Start, then Control Panel, then go to Add/Remove Programs.
At the top of the list you should see several ATI entries. Select the entry entitled ATI Software Uninstall Utility and click Change/Remove
You will be prompted to restart your system once the uninstall is complete.
Once restarted, check the Add/Remove Programs list again for any remaining ATI software.
If any ATI software is still listed, click Change/Remove on those entries to uninstall each one individually.
Next, please scroll through the list until you find an entry called DAO (see screenshot below).
Select DAO, then Click Change/Remove to uninstall this program.https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/parature/support/images/addremove.jpg

The two clips i am using to make a music video work fine. I am able to cut them and WMM dont close out. But when i put them together and i am at the end of making the movie and i cut a clip it closes out. I dont know if trying to remake it for the 3rd time would help or not.

Problem Solved:

The files have to be WMV, thought WMM supports .avi and .mpg files. WMM dont work well with these kinds of files. I'm guessing, :p So the problem was they werent the right file type.

No its not the filetype its doing it again, the file type is wmv and its still crashing with no warning

Captain Mazda

This is a codec error. WMM is loading codecs that are causing it to crash.

First I will require you to download the Ace Mega Codec Pack:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm

Then download and install the latest divX filter:

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

Now open up Movie Maker and go into Tools > Options and click on the Compatibility tab. Uncheck every codec you see listed there and start messing around, adding the codecs one by one. I unfortunately do not remember which problem codecs I singled out, but you can find pages on the web to help you with that. The Mega Codec Pack comes with a tool called Gspot which can show you exactly what codecs you have installed and which codecs could be causing problems.

It's not easy if you haven't had experience doing this stuff, so I wish the best of luck as I am incredibly tired at the moment.

May the One Ninja be with you.

Click on Tools > Options and then the Compatibility tab.

Now if you've installed the codecs I asked you to get, select the following:

Dirac Video Decoder
Nero DVD Decoder
Mpeg Splitter
Ligos MPEG Video Decoder
Ligos MPEG Splitter
Nero Video Decoder
MPEG-2 Demultiplexer
MatrixMixer
AC3Filter
Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder
DirectVobSub (auto-loading version)
Avi Splitter
DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor
Intervideo Audio Decoder
DivX Decoder Filter
Elecard MPEG2 Demultiplexer
CoreAAC Audio Decoder
Intervideo H.264 Decoder
XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder
Dirac Splitter
Windows Media Video Decoder
Ligos MPEG Audio Decoder
ACELP.net Sipro Lab Audio Decoder
MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
Microsoft Screen Video Decompressor
AC3 Parser Filter
MainConcept (Adobe2) MPEG Video Decoder
MainConcept (Adobe2) MPEG Audio Decoder
MainConcept (Adobe2) MPEG Splitter
Windows Media Audio Decoder
Matroska Splitter
Nero Digital Audio Decoder
CoreVorbis Audio Decoder
InterVideo Video Decoder
VP6 Decompressor
InterVideo Audio Processor Fx

Now don't worry if you don't see all of these. Just select the ones you see in the list. Obviously my list is more extensive because of the various filmmaking and DVD software I have.

Captain Mazda

Now we're getting somewhere...

The newest version of Movie Maker (2.1 if I remember correctly) is available only with an install of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. You'll need to download SP2 from the Microsoft Update site. It's about 250MB and will also add Windows Firewall and the Security Center, as well as a plethora of security fixes and patch-ups to your computer. I didn't think there'd be anyone using SP1 on a computer with an online connection.

The thing about tech assistance threads on messageboards is that you should always post the solution to stand as the last post to help anyone in the future having the same problem ;)

is purely selfish. If you are being helped here, the least you can do back, is explain to the readers the steps that brought you the solution.

oh sorry i was in a rush,

This is what i did after installing the SP2

Now open up Movie Maker and go into Tools > Options and click on the Compatibility tab. Uncheck every codec you see listed there and start messing around, adding the codecs one by one.

Edit*

For me i left all the codecs unchecked and it seemed to work

Ok another question, No WMM is still working fine. I just didnt want to start a new thread since there was already one about WMM. I want to burn some of my best movies to a CD but last time i tried that. The DVD wouldn't play in my DVD player. How do i burn them and make them play???

Depends on your DVD player type and the disc itself. Most player standards are DVD-.

Also, I wouldn't recommend burning to DVDs via Movie Maker. If you want the best quality, you'd also need a bit more power. Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 for instance. You can download a trial of it from Adobe's homepage.

In addition, depends on the encoding of your DVD-RW as well. What mediums are you using? DVD player, DVD type, burner, etc.
