OK. :wve:

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my computer before Windows Vista comes out. Thing is, I wasn't going to install another hard drive to this computer but, felt it was necessary. Because, I've got (I think) a 120GB hard drive already and somehow I've managed to get down to 40GB! Kinda bummed. I'm willing to spend around £50 - £100 on a second hard drive. Hopefully around 250GB mark. ;)

Anyone like to post some links to help me? :)

Hmm... :pi: Could we start with a fresh Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) report to see what your situation is?

Why on earth do you want to exchange that?

Its a perfectly great hard drive with lots of space.. Not sure if its just ATA or SATA.. It looks like its ATA.

I'm not saying don't, I just think it would be a waste (of money). You have about 200gb, which is plenty enough for what you will need it for..

Current drive is a :-

Barracuda 7200.7 SATA interface

Are you going to upgrade or dual boot?

I wanna leave the OS on this hard drive and use the other hard drive for media, pictures, stuff like that. Games too. ;)

If you are sticking to a single OS I would normaly have thought 160GB would be enough? A good tidy up can free up gigabytes of data.
However, if you stiil want to update, then look at the SATA interface hard drives. It a fairly easy procedure to add an aditional drive.

I would suggest you look at www.dabs.co.uk It will give you a idea of price.

I have filtered the section down to SATA http://www.dabs.com/ProductList.aspx?&NavigationKey=11154&NavigationKey=4294960493&NavigationKey=42240000&NavigationKey=40970000&CategorySelectedId=11154&PageMode=1

I recommend an external USB hard drive. I have a 320GB one that works great. Itís very fast, quiet and reliable. I still use the main hard drive for all my programs but all my own data goes on the external one until I get around to burning it to DVDs. They donít cost much these days; I think this one cost me £100 but you can get them for less than that.

I picked up an internal 320GB SATA 2.0 HDD for £65 and they don't take up space on my desktop! Actually I bought 2 of them.

They're easy enough to fit you need a space in your hard drive caddy or failing that it can be fitted in a spare 5 1/4 CD drive bay with a bracket. You just need a SATA cable if you don't have one spare.

Take a look at Novatech's (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a517x1y0z1p0s0n0m0) hard drives or Scan Computers (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=16&Category=Hard+Drives+Int&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterKeywords=&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterCategories=167&OrderBy=1)

I have 2 x 250 GB, and that is easily filled up.

I'd recommend:
Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=318471) £65.01

I have a 80gb drive and a 320gb drive.. Getting there slowly :D

And yeah, I also recommend anything from Western Digital, just don't buy anything from Maxtor. I have had 2 fail on me already, and the quality isn't that great either.

I have Maxtor hdd's in my oldest PC. Now i remember i once bought a Maxtor that immediately turned out to be full with damaged sectors. I returned it in the shop and received a new one of course. Since then, never any problem. In my other 3 PC's i have Western Digital. Never any problem.
I prefer WD, but i admit that it's only for subjective motivation.

I think there is no reason to blame Maxtor or their manufacturing, they are very much OK. The way people handle the hdd (during the distributing process) might be the cause for failure and that could happen with every brand. One physical shock on a hdd can damage it.

jamieoliver22
06-12-06, 17:17
Yeah, true, but I have also heard lots of bad things about Maxtor. Like I said, 2 have failed on me, some teachers at school have external Maxtors and they fail sometimes and even Justin on the forums have had 2 fail on him...

So I dunno.. I still prefer Western Digital anyway..

So, I buy that one. Does my motherboard have another SATA port? Also, does the cables come with the harddrive? :)

Joseph

Your motherboard should at least have a SATA port to which you can connect 2 SATA hdd's. That is standard.

The cables don't usually come with the hdd. You'll need to buy them seperately.

Usually, when you build the PC, and you bought a ASUS motherboard, you get at least 6 SATA cables! So i have some left i don't use. :p

But that's the theory; i hope Dimension 4700 works the same as my motherboards (ASUS P5AD2-E Premium and P5W DH Deluxe), namely: 4 plugs on the SATA port 1 , that is meant for 2 SATA drives in IDE mode (that is what you should use), or 4 in RAID mode (this is of no interest since you don't use RAID and just don't even bother about it).

If your board is similar with this, your current hdd should stay connected to SATA slot 1 (which it is i suppose). Your new hdd should be connected to SATA slot 3. You should not need to change any setting in BIOS; that should stay at "EIDE"

This is a good question, and a confusing situation. I hope Dimension 4700 won't cause problems about this. :)
