View Full Version : TR5 cursor keys does not work on XP

Hi,

I'm almost desperate trying to find a solution for my TR5 game in my new XP laptop. Last time I played it was in W98 with my original TR5 CD.

I've followed the instructions and download patches from the following link http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=77845 and the game itself runs proporly even at the highest resolution on my laptop (1920x1200 32bit) BUT only a few keys from my laptop keyboards works properly (enter, bar and control) the rest simply does not work.

The worst is that cursor keys does not work so I cannot go on through the menus and select the 'Option' in the main menu to see how keys are mapped. Even more, the mouse does not work at all within the game.

PLEASE, any advice about what I can do to play the game, basically my keyboard seems not to be recognized by the game!!

:hea:

Hi jambala and welcome to our forums. :)
What is your keyboard layout setting? "US (International)" should work always.

Hi Joseph and thanks for your quick response!

Currently I have US international although originally I had ES (Spanish). The keyboard works perfectly in each of the selected layouts except once you enter the game.

I've been reviewing other previous similar posts and I was thinking of de-installing the game, run the trrc.exe, install again the game and run the XP patch, but I feel like it won't work.

I can also post for you the ouput of diagnose.exe, could you have a look at it? any other hint?

Yes, please post your diagnose.exe report, that could be helpful. :)

Hi again,

I repeated the whole process again and I get the same behaviour

The only keys that are working are the following but unfortunately I cannot reach the 'Options' menu anyhow.

Enter - Select
Esc - To the inventory, but I cannot scroll
P - Pause, and then I can see 'Statistics' because it is first option available but I cannot go down once to 'Options' menu
Bar - To get the guns out
Ctrl - To fire once guns are out
. - To put Lara on her knees
, - To set a flare

That's all. I cannot do any movement at all with Lara. I exit the game by Alt+F4.

Isn't there any way to edit manually how keys are maped?

Here you are the diag.txt:

You installed an old patch: PCTomb5.exe File Size = 1282096 bytes - TombRaiderChronicles XP Version : Fast Loading mod developed by Gospel GeekThat is not our latest.... :whi:
Also your nVidia drivers: Driver Date/Size: 3/3/2006 05:41:00, 3968000 bytes

Download 93.71 from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html

Driver Installation Hints

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Also your Realtek drivers seem to be outdated. Download and install the latest: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Oopps!

The most strange thing is that as I said in my first post, I downloaded de software from information in post http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=77845 but I will double check it ... or just tell me, please, direct link to the latest patch!!

I'm gonna also update Ndivia and Realtek drivers.

Let's go. Thanks for now.

Joseph

Hmm... the links on this page: http://www.tombraiderhub.com/faq/tr4.html work OK?
Download and install theTomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch (Download (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html) - Freeware) before playing the game as you may experience crashes and slow loading times.

jambala
08-12-06, 19:35
Sorry Joseph but I think I'm not following you ...

Why are you referring to me in your latest post to a link corresponding to TR4 instead of TR5?

Anyway, on that page you get the same link for "theTomb Raider Series XP/Vista Multipatch" that is, http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html

I downloaded the patch from there and then I selected only TR5 when I installed, but you said to me that was not the latest patch :(

On the other hand, you can also download the patch for TR5 for XP at http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp2.html (Download - Tomb Raider Chronicles). Then you get only the "PCTomb5.exe" & "binkw32.dll" files that you have to copy manually in the game directory.

I've just tried also with this patch but I get the same result (still I've not updated nvidia and realtek drivers), BUT first thing is to be sure I've got the correct and latest patch.

Which is your opinion? Should I install patches from:
http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html
or
http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/windowsxp2.html

Where's the latest ones!

Joseph
08-12-06, 20:47
Sorry jambala for my small mistake! But as you see, the TR Updater is for all Tomb Raider games. :)

jambala
08-12-06, 21:15
Ok Joseph,

but then, the patch you get is the one you can see in my 'diag' info.

Why then you said that this is not the latest one?

On the other hand, I've updated the ndivia driver to the latest one (no the link you gave me, but other since I have a laptop and then this is a ndivia GeForce Go 7900 GS), but it does not work either.

About the realtek driver, I'll do it, but I don't think an audio driver has much to do with this keyboard problem.

Do you have more suggestions? What about editing the maping of the controls/key manually? is it feasible?

I'm starting to run out of clues

Joseph

I've been reviewing other previous similar posts and I was thinking of de-installing the game, run the trrc.exe, install again the game and run the XP patch, but I feel like it won't work.

Actually that wouldn't be a bad idea. If you run into many problems that you can't fix the best way is to start from scratch.

Hi Lord Icon. :wve:

Jambala: That's all. I cannot do any movement at all with Lara. I exit the game by Alt+F4. Just an idea (i'm not too familiar with Laptops myself but) : did you unlock the NUMPad keys? (there are none on a laptop?)

Isn't there any way to edit manually how keys are maped? Should be, yes. Options > Controls. But you can't access them apparently.

jambala
08-12-06, 22:34
Hi Joseph and Lord Icon,

First of all sorry for the mad smilie, but I did not mean anything about your posts but to my desperate situation. Sorry anyway for the confusion.

This must be really a challenge to make TR5 work in a laptop!

I will try to answer briefly to your latest comments:

- About starting again from the scratch, I already did it, and it didn't happen anything different from the first time.

- About unlock de NUMPad keys, yes, I've tried all the combinations, in fact, since my laptop is a 17'' widescreen, it has a full keyboard with separate keys for NumPad and Cursors.

- Last, when I asked about a way of manually editing the mapping of the keys, I meant someway to edit manually a file containing the mapping without using the option within the game, which I cannot access. This should be possible but I don't know how since there are a few files in the hard disk directory but it must be on the hard disk since you can change it, so it must be a writeable file not located on the CD itself.

Finally, please Joseph, Why did you say some posts ago that the TR patch is not the latest one?

You installed an old patch:
Quote:
PCTomb5.exe File Size = 1282096 bytes - TombRaiderChronicles XP Version : Fast Loading mod developed by Gospel Geek

That is not our latest....

How can we go on????????

Joseph
08-12-06, 22:43
Finally, please Joseph, Why did you say some posts ago that the TR patch is not the latest one?
Because it is some time ago i last checked our updater and thought to remember it was later than that one from your dxdiag. Apparently not, but no problem anyway. If you downloaded from the referenced link you have our latest.

I'll install the game on this PC and check. However, i don't think there exists such config file. But i'm sure your problem will be solved sooner or later but atm we're still struggling... :(

Installed TR5 and patched from the TR Multi-Patch (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html). Game runs 100% OK. (Desktop PC, WindowsXP).

There is no config file. We must find another way around your keyboard problem.

jambala

Bufff,

Thanks for your effort. It's gonna be really tough.

I'm still wondering where the settings you put in the 'Options' within the game are phisically stored. I have also looked at my installation and didn't find anything. Maybe we can ask to CoreDesign&Eidos? :-)

It's is really strange that only a few keys works properly.

Ok, maybe tomorrow we can have new ideas ...

By the way, I have also notice that first time running the game after booting the PC, it takes a veeeeery long time to load/run the game. After it, it goes quick.

Hi jambala, Sim, Joseph :wve:

jambala - have you ever tried a different keyboard?

In the diagnose report's "DirectInput Devices" section says only "Teclado" (which in Spanish means "keyboard"). But that's about it. What kind of keyboard do you have connected to your computer right now? Some keyboards have to have their own software installed and although the basic keys should function without it they tend to "behave" strangely with some programs. Not something that happens offten but not impossible either.

Hey, you could take a look at my (i think everybody's normal) registry settings:

Hello all (Joseph, Lord Icon, Sim),

Here we go again, but still failing in our challenge :(

Let's start for the Registry. I've edited and compared to Joseph's information and it looks like exactly the same. I've also checked the other

section just in case (unfortunately I cannot include the image because I don't know how to use the tag [img] since it asks for a url and I've

not a web server with the image  )

I'm afraid of being the same contents ... the problems is not going to be in the Registry.

I'm starting to think more in the direction Lord Icon says

In the diagnose report's "DirectInput Devices" section says only "Teclado" (which in Spanish means "keyboard"). But that's about it. What

kind of keyboard do you have connected to your computer right now?

I've looked at the information for the driver of the keyboard (... if I knew how to post images ...). I'm using the in-built keyboard of my

laptop (I might even take a picture of it and send it to you!) and the information about the driver is the following:

*Standard Keyboard 101/102 keys or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
- Driver: Microsoft
- Date: 2001/07/01
- Version: 5.1.2600.2180
- Digital Signature: Microsoft Windows Component Publisher

The keyboard does work perfectly while out of the game but as I posted before, within the game only a few keys works.

That's all. What ca we do next?

Hey,

Now I guess I know how to post :) Here is the information not posted above:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/jambala_croft/TR5_Game.jpg

As you can see, the 'Game' part of the registry is exactly the same as Joseph's registry.

jambala

Ok no props, I'll wait ...

In the meantime, I was thinking of another possible way to open some possibilities to this problem. It is based on the fact that some keys do work within the game, mainly the 'Enter' key which allows to me select an option in the game menus.

The goal would be to reach the 'Options' menu within the game. I could do that if the 'Down' key (cursor down) would work.

The idea would be trying to map directly the 'down' action to a key in my keyboard which I know it works, for example, the key that allows Lara to set a flare directly, in my case is the dot '.' key.

First step would be to identify this key in the registry. I guess it is the following:

JFlr REG_DWORD 0x00000009 (9)

Now, I would need which data ('Gegevens') if for the down key (cursor down). I guess it is the following (but we do need confirmation!!):

JJmp REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

and the I would chage the data for down key for the data for setting the Flares, that is:

JFlr REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

Should it work?

I'm pretty sure that the key for Lara setting a flare is 'JFlr', but I need confirmation about what data is the corresponding to the cursor down key (in my guess, 'JJmp' and therefore 0). THIS is where maybe you can also help me changing in your game the assigment to the cursor down key and therefore discovering the name in the registry for this key. It should be the only one changing its value comparing to the snapshot you did before.

What do you think?

jambala - Did you try a different keyboard yet? I do realise that you're on a laptop but you could try an external keyboard to see if you have any problems with it.

jambala
10-12-06, 20:18
I see,

definitely, yours has a better appearance than mine :( .

Then, I must try something for getting the same output in that section like you, but what???? :hea:

On the other hand, I haven't try another external keyboard yet, mainly because I haven't got one, but during this week I will bring home my external keyboard from the office and I'll check it, although this would not be an awesome solution ;)

One thing more, could it be something related to the fact that it seems my laptop keyboard is recognized by the system as a PS/2 device? Look at the following section in the diagnose result titled 'PS/2 devices'. In my case, the keyboard appears there:
