Decided to treat myself to some new hardware this xmas,in the form of an upgrade to my CPU/motherboard and graphics card..got about 350 to spend(sorry, not sure what that is in euro's!)..any recommendations welcome!

(I'm thinking I'll need to post a copy of diagnose.exe so you can see what I already have?..)

Diagnose.exe would be helpful. Also, what type are you planning to get? I would assume PCI-express?

Also, what will you be using it for? Gaming I would assume?

Jamie.

Hi Joseph :wve:
If I'm not mistaken Vectra3000 wants to upgrade the GPU also... No such ability if buying all that ;) IMO better stay on AMD platform...

That would be burning money at this point, maybe by the end of 2007 or early 2008 AMD might have something worth buying again.

Building any machine around any AMD CPU now is not smart at all.

why do you say that? games do not yet require dual core CPU...:)

Joseph

It's not because of dual core per se, it is the efficiency of the new Core2Duo CPU's, which outperform even the best AMD's. :)

And yes i forgot he also wanted a videocard included in the price... no that would be a waste and no upgrade.

this thread started because someone was on a budget and wanted a system that would play games? you need to research the 'bang per buck' value and FPS comparison of AMD vs Core2duo..games are single threaded applications, and a relatively cheap AMD CPU can match a core2duo chip in terms of FPS and for a tiny fraction of the price. And the AMD X2 can be bought for peanuts. But if you want a high end system not just for games then I'd agree with you. Otherwise no.

Yes i agree with you Belter. :)
This one then:
Upgrade Kit AMD AM2 Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Mainboard, 1024MB, PCI-Express (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=311935) 240.01

Graphic card:
Sapphire Radeon X1950PRO 256MB GDDR3, PCI-Express, HDCP, 2xDVI-I, Lite-Retail (http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=326957) 132.00

Together = 372.01

You are wrong there. ;)

In games the Core 2 Duo beats out any AMD CPU going by current data. You would still have to get one of the high end AMD CPUs to match the E6300 and E6400.

The only time it even starts to get close is at resolutions over 1600x1400 when the graphics cards take over.

Most people play at 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
