What a great game this is! I came to it after completing TR3 and later games and thought that TR1 would be a bit cranky. I'm glad to say that I was wrong.!

I am however stuck and if anyone could help I'd be grateful.

I'm at the bit in Palace Midas where you have to jump between pillars and if you are too slow the flames on the pillar tops ignite to kill Lara. Is there a technique I should employ or is it a case of keeping trying until I make it?

Thanks

Hi Armstrong http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif

Try not to run over the pillars in a straight line, but rather, run Lara in slight curves. You then get the steps to make the jumps and get to the other side in one smooth run without stops. It can be damn awkward, but with a bit of practice, you can get it.

Like Neteru said, you basically must not stop running, but keep run-jumping from pillar to pillar. A lot of people have problems with that one, but you will eventually make it! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

The way they are telling you to do it is the hard way.

I stumbled on to this back when the game first came out. It was about the first hint I ever placed on a Tomb Raider forum. Here is the way to do it.

You must get Lara to run and jump to the first 2 pillars. When she gets to the second, (the first one lined up in a straight line with the rest) stop.

Jump backward off the edge and hang.

Make Lara shuffle to the left as far as she can go. Save the game.

Now have Lara pull up on to the platform and then run and jump across the last 2 platforms to the ledge staying on the left side.

As long as Lara does no run through the center of the flames she does not catch fire and takes only a small amount of damage.

I can do it on the first or second try every time now.

If you don't make it just reload the game in the hanging position and try again. Remember to hold down the action key when you reload so she doesn't fall.

That's cheating !! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I always run and jump without stopping until i feel that I won't get to the next block and then I stop to line myself up. I always shoot the crocs first too in case i fall in the water. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Mike I just had a quick go of the game and tried this method, to me it seems more difficult and less reliable. One continueos run and jump pattern is surely the easiest (not to mention quickest) way of crossing the room? I never have any problems with it, and very rarely fall using this technique. Like somebody said earlier, though, you have to curve slightly in the air to make sure you have enough space on the next ledge to prepare for the next jump.

EDIT: Not only that, only PC users can save anywhere. Console users are stuck with a save point at each end of the room...

First, kill three rats in the pool below and then save your game. Now, face the brown line on the floor. Take a running jump. Flames will shut down as soon as you pass the line. Keep pressing Jump + Forward to do running jumps and, as needed, press Left and Right to angle Lara so she lands directly onto the next pillar. The sequence is this: forward, right, left, forward. Just be sure as you leap from the third pillar to press Action in mid-air to grab the edge opposite. Then pull up and quickly run forward to safety.

I really hope you'll make it. Good luck! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

It's not cheating if the game is designed to allow you to do it that way.

In order to play through TR1 with out saving I used every short cut the game allows and this is one.

I have played the game at least 30 times over the years and done it both ways and I think that this is far easier. I can usually do it on the first try now.

Since you have no time constraint it is very easy to get to the second pylon and you don’t have to worry about making the adjustment on the third jump that is a pain.
After that you can take as long as you want to complete the last part.

Tomb Raider 1 is not the only one of the games that does not penalize you as much for jumping through the edge of the fire as it does of jumping over the middle. There are a number of place where fires light in hallways where staying to the side will keep you from catching fire.

Actually there is a third way to do it as well.

Run across the pylons and jump to the platform.
If Lara is on fire hit F6 and save the game.

When Lara lands and dies reload and you will fine that when she reappears she will have suffered the damage but will not be on fire any longer (this does seem like cheating but it works if you are desperate). You can get the brick and jump in the water and swim back.

One continueos run and jump pattern is surely the easiest (not to mention quickest) way of crossing the roomIf you time your jumps right during the run, it's easy peasy indeed. But it may require some practice if you're doing it for the first time http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

This is the easiest method, (without saving or anything) dont have to worry about timing particulary...
Run and jump the first 2 pillars, then do a standing jump to the next and for the last one simply hang onto the edge. When the fire comes back on, shift to edge of the pillar (still hanging), then climb up and run across. You will not be set on fire (for some reason)! And you don't have to save the game or anything.
