View Full Version : Running Slow

Can someone please help.

Ever since I got a new graphics and sound card installed on my PC, everything has been running extremely slow:

Opening/closing all the applications/programs on my computer.
Even shut down takes so much longer.
The only thing that is still ok is my internet speed.

These are the specs of my PC:

2 processors running - Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz
2.81 GHz Performance Rated at 5.06 GHz
Ram: 1023.5 MB
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Hard Drive: 200GB

I am not sure if I have covered everything above as I am a real novice :o when it comes to computers. Also a friend mentioned to me that I might need another fan as it may be getting hot

Any thoughts people ?

Download & run Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) and post the report here.
But before that try removing unnesessary/temporary files and defragmenting your hard drive:
Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk defragmentation ;)

Does it work better/faster now?
BTW, you have too many apps currently running, check your autorun for unnesessary apps. Run antivirus and spyware detector.

Can I ask a couple of questions:

1. What is apps?
2. What is and how do I check my autorun?
3. I run a speed disk optimiser now and then is that the same as what I ran before the "disk defragmentation"?

Also I run an antivirus and spyware detector once a week.

I will check now to see if it runs any better.

1. Apps - applications - programs.
2. Your autorun: generally google for RegRun program, download it and you'll see all the programs that start automatically with your system ;)
3. Yes, it's the same.

Heat will not cause a PC to slow down, so it's not the fan.
"2.81 GHz Performance Rated at 5.06 GHz" <--what nonsense. A dual core cpu is never rated as operating twice as fast as a single, they both operate next to each other.

Who built in the X-Fi soundcard? Did you do that yourself? Because whoever did it, has not uninstalled Realtek drivers and then disabled the AC'97 soundchip in BIOS!

The fact that your computer is running slow may be because the graphics card is borrowing system memory to run. I doubt it would have anything to do with the sound card. :)

You should check the documentation that came with your graphics card to see if it is borrowing system memory or if it supplies its own memory.

Also heat would make a difference, if your graphics card is only using passive cooling, and not a fan, that would heat up your sytem quite a lot, if this is the case, and you have room, I would reccomend you install another fan blowing in. :)

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT is not Turbo Cache card. It is NOT borrowing RAM from system. It has 256MB of its own.

Bad installed soundcard can cause system slowdown, because Windows sees two sound devices installed at the same time. Drivers don't mix.

Heat can cause system SHUTDOWN. But that is not the case here. ;)

Not true. Only 0.5mb is missing, that would not affect a system whatso ever. And you cannot just speculate that it is the graphics card, it could easily be the built in sound chip (like Joseph stated above).

Can someone please help.

Ever since I got a new graphics and sound card installed on my PC, everything has been running extremely slow:

I am not sure if I have covered everything above as I am a real novice :o when it comes to computers. Also a friend mentioned to me that I might need another fan as it may be getting hot

Any thoughts people ?

Ok, lets go back to basics here. Have you uninstalled all traces of the old audio/video drivers before you installed the new drivers for the new devices? Have you installed the new drivers?

What devices did they replace? Personally I'd use Driver Cleaner Pro (http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138459-driver-cleaner-pro-1-5-a.html) to remove all traces of old drivers before installing the new, especially graphics card drivers.

Edit: reply to post below: oops I didn't notice that. :o Merry Xmas all. :D

Hmm....

If anything, defragment your hard drive:

1. Go to START > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk defrag.
2. Click Analyze to check if your disk needs defragmenting (optional)
3. Click Defragment to begin the defragmentation process.

Hope I helped!

Joseph

For defragmenting, Diskeeper Lite (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207) is recommended. It does the job much quicker than the Windows inbuilt defragger.

Fragmented drive can cause system responsiveness slowdown, but not that much as described here. The problem is most likely the mix of two sounddevices. This makes Windows crazy.

Hi Joseph :wve:

After I ran the defragment, the system is still running really slow.

A friend of mine installed the sound card. I don't know too much about computers, but from all the comments here and looking at the diagnose report it looks like he hasn't uninstalled the old the drivers, before installing the new one's.

Personally I'd use Driver Cleaner Pro (http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138459-driver-cleaner-pro-1-5-a.html) to remove all traces of old drivers before installing the new, especially graphics card drivers.

Can I use the application above to fix this problem?

lol it's making me crazy too. Is there anyhting I can do rather than wait for my friend to fix this problem?

Well if you never fiddled IN your PC's hardware, then don't and let your friend redo it as soon as possible.

This should be done:

uninstall Creative X-Fi drivers completely.
uninstall Realtek drivers completely
Defragment your harddiskdrive (so the old data get overwritten) Recommended: Diskeeper Lite (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207)
reboot PC, cancel all Windows messages about "new hardware found"!
Look in Control Panel > Device Manager that no sounddevice is working
Shut down PC and take it off the current!
Open the case, take out the X-Fi card.
Put back the current on the PC and boot up into BIOS (press "Del" key).
Navigate to the AC '97 sounddevice and disable it. Save and Exit BIOS.
Shut down PC and take it off the current!
Place the X-Fi card firmly into the slot. Make sure it is done correctly. And connect the audiocable between your internal cd/dvd player and the card.
Reboot the PC. Cancel all Windows messages about "new hardware found"!!!
Put in the Creative CD, and install.
After this, update the drivers from Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Autoupdate, start HERE: http://www.creative.com/language.asp?sDestUrl=/support/downloads/su.asp
Reinstall DirectX9.0c (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en&Hash=Ih5ph3%2bXSvIofXsgmH2F9M7jKFy9lSq4T0ufgbFA6t0 tE4C9%2bUJf1sRmGlqPYyxg%2bZTZBiG0%2fWqEodeBc5xD0Q% 3d%3d)
Defragment again.

Well after seeing what needs to be done there is no way I will be fiddling, you lost me after point 1. :o I'll ge in touch with him and hopefully this will fix the problem.

Thank you Joseph, EscondeR and everyone else for helping me, it's really appreciated :)

Will let you know how it goes :wve:

I would suggest to reinstall the OS (operation system). Also check the BIOS settings, does the CPU's configurated properly?

Please azumi... how is your "operation system" today? :whi:

Satu knows what to do now. Let's all just wait untill that is done. :wve:

Well my friend finally came over and found that he did install the sound card incorrectly. I think he was in a rush when he installed the new graphics/sound card. Anyhow I told him what was suggested here and he also downloaded the latests drivers.

So I am very happy to report that my system is now runnning like a dream :D

So thanks again Joseph and everyone, your help here is really appreciated  :wve:
