View Full Version : Incredibly bad controls in Win XP

I dug out my dusty copy of The Last Revelation recently, after seeing that a lot of you are replaying it, and installed it on Win XP. It had to be put into Win 98 compatibility mode before it would run and appears to be working fine but with one extremely bad flaw... the controls. I don't remember it being this bad when I played it years ago, but Lara just doesn't do what she's told.

Tapping on the left or right cursor key, for example, sometimes does nothing, and with a few taps more she spins around about 180 to 360 degrees. This appears to be more prevalent when she's up next to or near any wall or obstacle. Trying to get her to run on any high platform usually ends up in her falling off to her death of severly hurting herself because she simply doesn't respond or respond quickly enough. Installing the patch doesn't fix it.

Does anyone else have this problem?

That never happends to me. Have you tried the windows xp patch?

Tried it with and without the patch. Same problem. Can't be related to a slow PC problem either cos my PC is only a few months old -- 4.3Gz processor, loads of memory and disk space, and top graphics card.

assuming that your game isn't running jerkily, animation wise, maybe its a worn out button or something?
try taking your guns out, in, out, in etc.
does she do it every time?
get yourself a pad if not

you know TR already has "eccentric" controls anyway,as you say you've played it ages ago as well.

i dont tend to run much on high ledges, if thats any help either.

write back.

Someone discussed this exact problem a few weeks ago, perhaps for a different game, perhaps in Tech Support. Search recent threads or wait for the mods to return from the weekend/holiday (I'm guessing that's why they haven't already informed you). There's a straightforward solution.

The game runs as smooth as honey, no jerkiness whatsoever. Yeah, Lara never did have the best of controls, but she's worse in this game for some reason. It's not the comp keyboard as it works fine with everything else.

Her worst failing is probably her not responding quickly enough. If I hit the roll button, for example, she stands there for anything up to about 3 seconds before she rolls.

So far I've got her to the end of Level 07, Temple Of Karnak, but it's been a hard slog. She's been bitten by dogs, stung by scorpions, broken a few bones and drowned countless times 'cos she doesn't move. I feel like punchin her :cen:'ing face in at times, lol.

Have you tried running any anti-virus and anti-spyware scans?..if you've got anything like that on your system it can cause sluggish response to controls..especially the LE..

Welcome to our forums qball_sc. :)
You do not have a 4.3 Ghz processor because that doesn't exist. Could be you have overclocked, or you're talking about a AMD Athlon 4200+.

Is your keyboard wireless?

Do you have any gamepad connected to your PC, unplug it an move it out of distance from the PC. Also keep mobile phones away from the PC.

Do not apply Compatibility mode to this game. Just install the game and apply the updater from THIS PAGE (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html).

uninstall TR4.
Apply trrc.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/trrc.exe) TR Registry Cleaner will remove all game settings left behind after uninstalling TR games.
Re-install TR4.
Apply the Multi-updater (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/vista/patch.html)Please click on following link Diagnose.exe (http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/diagnose.exe) , select to RUN it then post the complete result into your next reply.

Yeah, sorry, my processor isn't a 4.3, it's a 3.4 :cln: Got the numbers mixed up. I had to run the game in compatibility mode because otherwise is just bombed out. I downloaded the XP/Vista multi patch from the link you posted above and tried that. The game now works a treat -- Lara now behaves herself... well as much as she can given Tomb Raider's less than perfect controls. And saved game even load almost instantly now. That's a major bonus. Thanks for your help!
