View Full Version : Tomb Raider 1: Trying to match video & audio
Hello there,
It seems that trying to install Tomb Raider 1 on WinXP is like asking for trouble, but here I am with a very difficult question; I think.
Everything works as perfect as can be in Tomb Raider 1, but somehow the audio & video of the in-game video where Lara Croft and Larson meet in the caves with the giant waterfall doesn't match in Tomb Raider 1! First you see the video without any sound and only after a few seconds the audio starts and so the movements of both figures don't match with what is actually being said .... very annoying indeed!
Could it be that I need to alter something about the optical drive which plays the Tomb Raider 1-disc? Because it seems that my D:-drive (which is indeed the lowest of all 3 optical drives that I have) isn't working and when the game requests for this particular ingame-video, it just takes a bit too long too match audio and video. And it's only with these so-called ingame-videos ..... the actual FMV's play perfectly. (you can also listen to the tracks of these ingame-videos in Windows Media Player; something you can't do with the FMV's. They can only be heard INSIDE the videogame itself).
Sorry if I'm being too confusing about certain stuff, but I definitely need some help here. Please help me! I'm desperate!
Many thanks!
Bye for now
I'm going to assume that you're using VDMSound to get the sound to work.
Open the properties for your VDMSound shortcut, click the Advanced button, and go to the Performance tab.
Check both checkboxes. Move the slider about 3/5 of the way to the right.
Next comes the irritating part. Because the video performance is sensitive to your machine's performance while the audio speed remains constant, you're going to have to play with that slider until you find the right setting for your machine.
Pick a slider position, save it (i.e. hit OK), and start TR1. Load from a save just before the cutscene (preferably just after you kill him but before the cuscene starts), and watch until she kicks Larson's head.
If the sound is too late, you'll need to quit, move the slider to the right, and try again. If it's too early, you'll need to quit, move the slider to the left, and try again.
Repeat until the sound matches the action.
Good luck.
Dan

OH, MY GOD!!! You actually know the answer to this question!!! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif
I've been searching for this my entire life (well: sorta!) http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
And yes: I use VDMSound, but the only question that remains is ... what is the exact name of the file, because I've been opening every single file in my VDMSound-folder, but no luck so far! I ain't got a shortcut on my desktop, you see! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
Please tell me the exact name of the file and it this is true what you just said, I'll be dancing like a monkey and I could kiss you ... but I'm not going to. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/hug.gif
--------------
A minute or so later ....
Are you talking about the file VDMSRun which appears to be a shortcut to an MS-DOS-program (it says so in somewhat smaller, grey characters underneath the name of the file) because I found something called "CPU-reduction when not active" within that particular file and you can shift the cursor of that bar from low to high(right now it's totally to the left).
Hope you can help me with the name of the file and the exact category in which I have to shift from low to high ... within that file.
Many thanks,

The shortcut you use to start TR1 should be a VDMSound shortcut. If you right-click the shortcut and choose Properties, the resulting dialog box should have a tab labelled "VDMSound".
If so, then there will be an "Advanced" button on the VDMSound tab. Click it. You'll get another dialog box with lots of tabs. Go to the Performance tab.
If the shortcut you start TR1 with isn't a VDMSound shortcut, then you're probably using an older version of VDMSound (older than 2.1) and will need different instructions for configuring. If that's the case, let me know and I'll try to help figure out what's going on.
If this entire post is unclear, let me know and I'll add pics.

I know you can right-click the file "tomb.exe" and then choose 'start with VDMSound' but I have always played Tomb Raider through the use of GLIDOS. And so: in order to play Tomb Raider, I open up the GLIDOS-window (and keep this server open at all times, coz otherwise I can't play the game) and then press Start and there I go.
I have never indicated myself that I wanna use VDMSound. I've downloaded VDMSound and installed it but it wasn't until using the Tomb Raider Advanced Installer for installing "Tomb Raider 1" that I got the choice in that program to use both GLIDOS (for graphics) and VDMSound (for audio) to improve "Tomb Raider 1 all the way. So what file in the VDMSound-folder are you exactly referring to, please? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

I know that I have (checking in explorer for a brief moment) VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi (that is the full name of the install-file which I copied and pasted here) and I thought I had the latest version, but now I'm not so sure. :(
If this entire post is unclear, let me know and I'll add pics. Dan Maybe it's best to start with pictures, no? Coz frankly I don't know anymore whether to start Tomb Raider through GLIDOS or through some VDMSound shortcut. :D http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-1.gif
Whatever happens ... thanks a lot for you help, my fellow Tomb Raider!

Ah. Much that was hidden is revealed.
I'll have to reproduce your installation in order to advise you properly.
I'll attempt it this evening and let you know.
BTW, I strongly recommend upgrading to VDMSound 2.1. Google for "VDMSound 2.1", with the quotes. The 2.1 version incorporates the VDMSound Launcher, a wonderful addition that lets you create VDMSound Shortcuts. The properties for these shortcuts have tabs for configuring various aspects of VDMSound, so you don't have to go messing directly with configuration files.
Also, unless you've already paid for it, or aim to install the Glidos texture pack and Glidos music pack, I recommend using DGVoodoo instead; DGVoodoo does high-res just as well and it's free.

Hi Sifo-Dyas
First, delete your old version of VDMSound, it is of no use anymore.
Delete TOMBRAID folder.
Download and install VDMSound 2.1.0 (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/cgi-bin/downloads2/dl.pl?fx_tr_vdmsound) Next, download and install the Advanced Installer (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/cgi-bin/downloads2/dl.pl?fx_tr1_installer)
Follow instructions on This page (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tr1/faq.html#)
For any trouble, post your questions preferrably in our Tech Support Forum (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=11)
Since Joseph has given far better advice than I could hope to, I'm going to forego trying to duplicate your setup.
BTW, before you delete the TOMBRAID folder, you might want to copy all the SAVEGAME.* files somewhere safe first, then copy them back in after you reinstall.
I know I'd be irritated if I reinstalled only to find that I'd lost 4 levels of progress! http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Dan Thanks for all your help. I'll be sure to let y'all know how things turn out, ok? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
Regarding DGVoodoo: : Is DGVoodoo better than GLIDOS? And you say it comes free? http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/yikes.gif Does that mean that, when I choose for DGVoodoo in the Tomb Raider Advanced Installer-program, that it is automatically downloaded and installed correctly without me having to do anything further? Or do I have to download DGVoodoo myself first before installing Tomb Raider 1 with the TRAdv.Inst.?
And it DOES improve the graphics of Tomb Raider 1 equally astonishing as GLIDOS did, right? Because if GLIDOS in any way gives better graphics of this game than DGVoodoo does, I'll choose GLIDOS. I just wanna play Tomb Raider 1 to its fullest extent for the very first time in my life, you see. :D
Pity about the 10$ but I'm having so much trouble getting rid of that God-awful GLIDOS-logo (which for some reason keeps popping up every few restarts of this game) that I'm most likely gonna choose DGVoodoo. http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif
Many thanks again and I'll see you soon, http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/wave.gif http://www.tombraiderforums.com/images/smilies/c-2.gif

I believe that DGVoodoo is incorporated in the TR1 Advanced Installer.
As for quality...see for yourself.
Dan
Sifo-Dyas, the reason the Glidos logo keeps circling after the first level is because you have a trial version.
And yes, like dbhankins says: DGVoodoo is incorporated in the Advanced Installer. ;)
No, the reason as to why the GLIDOS-logo keeps coming back is because something's wrong with the program and even Paul himself told me personally through e-mail (after I had asked him some questions about it) that he would look into it, but that he couldn't put his finger on it why this problem occured with quite a few people. I did pay 10$ for GLIDOS, but it's ok. I've chosen for DGVoodoo already instead. Pity about the 10$ payed, but DGVoodoo is indeed free and it's a lot easier indeed.
I'll let y'all know tomorrow or at least ASAP as to whether all that truckload of information did any good ........... in the mean time: already a BIG thank you to everybody for their wonderful advice and I'll be seeing you soon!
